‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Director Teases Hopes for an Unrated Version of Kathryn Newton Movie
Horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein wasn’t exactly a hit at the box office last year, scaring up just $9.7 million, but the film’s fanbase has been growing in the wake of its short-lived theatrical run. Slash Film’s Bj Colangelo recently dove deep into the film’s cult classic appeal, suggesting it’s the kind of movie that fans may continue falling in love with going forward.

Directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body), Lisa Frankenstein is PG-13, making it accessible to all audiences. But did you know it could’ve been rated R?

Diablo Cody told Cinema Blend last year, “There were extensive conversations on this topic actually and I’m ultimately very glad that it’s PG-13 because I don’t think we sacrificed any of the core components of the movie. And now a lot more people are gonna be able to see it,...

Megan Fox Was Harshly Mocked in 2009, Now Her $31.5M Box Office Flop Has Transcended the Cult Status
Image
More than a decade ago, Jennifer’s Body stormed into theaters only to get buried under a pile of harsh reviews and low audience scores. At the time, folks wrote it off as a messy horror-comedy that just couldn’t find its footing.

But over time, something surprising happened. Slowly but surely, the film found its people. Back then, society, as a collective, totally missed the point and failed the movie, kind of like a clueless guy who can’t see how pretty the girl is until she takes off her glasses.

It never belonged to the “it is so bad that it’s good” category, it always was good. Now, almost 15 years have passed, and the conversation around Jennifer’s Body still hasn’t cooled down. Here is how a flop turned into a cult classic!

How society failed Megan Fox’s 2009 film, Jennifer’s Body!

Back in 2009, Jennifer’s Body hit theaters...

Madonna Limited Series On Its Way To Netflix — Julia Garner Likely To Star
Image
It would be fair to say that music biopics are very much in vogue right now. From Bob Dylan (A Complete Unknown) to Bob Marley (One Love), Amy Winehouse (Back To Black) to Robbie Williams (Better Man), and very soon The Beatles too, Hollywood is — for lack of a better phrase — hung up on telling singers' stories. All of which is to say that the only surprising thing about today's news, coming from Deadline, that Netflix is partnering with Queen of Pop Madonna to make a four-part limited series chronicling the 'Beautiful Stranger' songsmith's life and career is that it hasn't happened sooner.

Back in 2020, we first reported that her Madgesty was planning to co-write and direct her own biopic, then envisioned as a feature team-up with Juno scribe Diablo Cody. But after learning in 2022 that three-time Emmy winning Ozark star Julia Garner had beaten out the likes of Florence Pugh...

Madonna Limited Series Biopic in Development at Netflix
Image
Madonna is working on adapting her life story into a limited series for Netflix.

The iconic pop star has teamed with “Stranger Things” producer and director Shawn Levy on a series about her life and career. The project is still in development, but if it comes to fruition, it will be Levy’s latest title with Netflix.

The filmmaker and producer’s 21 Laps has an overall deal with the streaming giant. Levy himself, meanwhile, has directed and produced a number of past Netflix shows and films, including “Stranger Things,” 2023’s “All the Light We Cannot See” and the Ryan Reynolds sci-fi vehicle “The Adam Project.”

He is currently attached to direct the Ryan Gosling-led “Star Wars: Starfighter” for Lucasfilm.

Madonna has been trying for years to get a biopic about her life and career off the ground. Julia Garner was previously said to be a frontrunner to play the...

Madonna’s Life Story to Be Adapted Into Netflix Limited Series from Shawn Levy — Report
Image
Madonna might be appearing on the small screen soon. The iconic singer will be at the center of a Netflix limited series about her life and music, according to a new Deadline report. Netflix did not confirm the project to IndieWire.

Per Deadline, Madonna will executive produce alongside “Stranger Things” EP Shawn Levy, whose 21 Laps banner has an exclusive TV overall deal at Netflix. Madonna is repped by CAA, Maverick Management, Untitled Entertainment, and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Levy and 21 Laps are repped by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

As Deadline noted, the slated series is not affiliated with the long-gestating film biopic about the “Like a Virgin” icon; that film was previously in development at Universal with Emmy winner Julia Garner set to portray Madonna as of June 2022.

Yet, Deadline cited the rumor that despite the project being separate from the feature, Garner could still be cast in the lead,...

Madonna Limited Series From Shawn Levy in the Works at Netflix
Image
After stops and starts on a biopic about her life and career, Madonna is turning to the limited series format to tell her story.

The music icon is teaming with producer and director Shawn Levy on a series project at Netflix. The limited series in the early stages of development at the streamer, where Levy’s 21 Laps company has an overall deal.

Netflix declined comment.

The Netflix project is not related to previous efforts to mount a feature film about Madonna. Julia Garner was considered the frontrunner to play Madonna in the film, which was set up at Universal Pictures but was scuttled in early 2023. Madonna hinted last year, via a social media post, that she was again at work on the film.

Since the development process is in its early days, it’s not clear whether the potential Netflix series would span Madonna’s entire life and career or a specific period within it.

Madonna Limited Series From Music Legend, Shawn Levy in Early Development at Netflix
Image
A Netflix limited series about music icon Madonna is in early development, Variety has confirmed.

The singer is partnering with Netflix and director Shawn Levy to develop a limited series about her life and music. The show is unrelated to the previous Madonna feature film that was set at Universal Pictures, with Julia Garner attached to star as the singer, before being scrapped in January 2023. It’s unclear which part of Madonna’s life the limited series would portray or who would play the musical legend.

Madonna put the Universal film on pause in favor of embarking on her worldwide “The Celebration Tour” from October 2023 to May 2024, but sources told Variety at the time of the move’s hiatus that “she remains committed to making a film about her life one day.” She co-wrote two drafts of the film’s script with Oscar winner Diablo Cody and Cressida Wilson about...

The Next Great Horror Cult Hit Arrived When No One Was Looking
Image
A few years back, as streamers purged their libraries of films that "weren't performing well" for tax write-offs, I lamented a possible future without cult films. My love of cinema was forged in the fires of VHS tapes found at my local Mom & Pop video store, bizarre movies recommended to me by the teenager behind the rental counter, and box office flops that found their audiences when they could be consumed from the safety of a living room couch. I hypothesized that cult films will never die, and that "as long as people are making weird, subversive, and provocative films that were never meant to appeal to four-quadrant audiences, there will be those dedicating their time to finding them and making sure like-minded folks can enjoy them, even if it means putting the 'underground' back into underground cinema."

And if the newly minted cult following of director Zelda Williams and...

“I Can’t Critique This Movie, To Me It’s Perfect”: 16 Years Later, Amanda Seyfried Says “The Marketing” Was to Blame for the Poor Reception of ‘Jennifer’s Body’
Image
Amanda Seyfried has strong feelings about her 2009 horror-comedy film “Jennifer’s Body.” She played Needy Lesnicki, a shy high school girl whose best friend Jennifer, acted by Megan Fox, gets possessed by a demon and starts killing boys.

The movie, directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, didn’t do well when it came out. Seyfried blames the failure on bad marketing.

In a recent chat with GQ, Seyfried praised the film. “I can’t critique this movie. To me, it’s perfect,” she said. “It’s got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken and beautiful and smart and funny. We were expressing a certain angst in a very specific, comedic way in a very specific genre. The special effects were so incredible, there were stunts, there was everything you could want.” She believes it had a unique mix of humor, horror, and stunts that made it special.

Amanda Seyfried Says Marketing Ruined 'Jennifer's Body'
Image
Amanda Seyfried opens up about how the marketing failed Jennifer's Body. Released in 2009 at the height of Megan Fox's popularity and just three months after Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the dark-horror comedy Jennifer's Body had all the makings of a box office hit. The movie was a critical and box office disappointment upon its release, but over the years, it has taken on the status of a cult classic and is now a highly regarded horror-comedy.

Seyfried, who co-starred in Jennifer's Body as Neddy, opened up about her frustration with how the film was marketed and left to flop at the box office in an interview with GQ . Looking back at her career, Seyfried talked about the role and touched on wanting to do a sequel. "I love Needy. It was the first time I got to play really nerdy, wearing the glasses. 'Jennifer's Body' Fans Need To Watch Diablo Cody's 'Lisa Frankenstein'
Image
Sometimes, a movie just needs to be brought back from the dead. Or at least that's the case for 2024's romantic comedy Lisa Frankenstein, the brainchild of Diablo Cody (fun fact: a pen name), and the directorial debut of Zelda Williams. Cody is the Academy-Award-winning writer of Juno, as well as many other female-empowering films like Young Adult, Ricky and the Flash, and, of course, the cult horror classic Jennifer's Body. Infamously, Jennifer's Body, which stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, suffered an egregious case of mismarketing prior to its release. The explicitly feminist, satirical film was packaged by the marketing team as a raunchy sex comedy to cater to male audiences, causing it to be panned by critics for not meeting expectations. Over time, Jennifer's Body has come to be loved for the hilarious and salient movie it always was.

Earlier this year, another horror satire written by Cody,...

Amanda Seyfried Says ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Is “Perfect” But Marketing Team “Cheapened It”
Image
As Jennifer’s Body plots a resurrection, Amanda Seyfried still has nothing but praise for the original.

With the growing possibility of a sequel to the 2009 film, the Oscar nominee slammed the marketing team after they “cheapened” and “ruined” the Diablo Cody-written, Karyn Kusama-directed comedy horror that co-starred Megan Fox.

“I can’t critique this movie. To me, it’s perfect,” she told GQ. “It’s got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken and beautiful and smart and funny. We were expressing a certain angst in a very specific, comedic way in a very specific genre. The special effects were so incredible, there were stunts, there was everything you could want.”

Seyfried added, “If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing. The marketing sucked, it just did. And we all agree.”

Amanda Seyfried Says ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Was a ‘Perfect Movie’ Ruined by Marketing that ‘Sucked’: ‘The Marketing Team Cheapened It’
Image
Even Amanda Seyfried agrees “Jennifer’s Body” deserved better marketing. Seyfried, who starred as Needy Lesnicki in Karyn Kusama’s 2009 cult horror film opposite Megan Fox, looked back on the role in a recent interview with GQ.

“I can’t critique this movie, to me it’s perfect. It’s got balls. The special effects were so incredible, there were stunts, there was everything you could want.”

Though “Jennifer’s Body” has since found an audience as a subversive feminist cult classic, the film flopped on initial release, which Seyfried chalks up to poor marketing. “If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing,” she said. “The marketing sucked, it just did. And we all agree.”

'I Wanna Celebrate It by Doing a Sequel': Amanda Seyfried Praises Jennifer's Body and Notes 'The Marketing Ruined It'
Image
Nowadays, Jennifer's Body is considered a cult classic, a comedy horror that was ahead of its time. The movie came out in 2009 and it didn't have the impact the stars, Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, as well as the creative team had hoped for, but they have highlighted the movie's impact throughout the years.

Seyfried has often addressed the movie and has always had nothing but good things to say. The same trend continues, as the actress addressed the movie in a new interview with GQ, where she breaks down her most iconic characters. Naturally, she also brought up Jennifer's Body's Needy.

"I can't critique this movie, it's to me a perfect movie. It's got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken and beautiful and smart and funny," she said about the screenwriter. "We were expressing a certain angst in a very, very specific, comedic way, in a very specific genre."

Amanda Seyfried Says ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Was “Ruined” by the Marketing Team: “It’s to Me a Perfect Movie”
Image
The 2009 horror-comedy Jennifer’s Body has built a cult following over the years, but it flopped at the time of its release, largely because of its misleading marketing campaign.

In a recent GQ video, Seyfried looked back on some of her most memorable roles. One of them being Jennifer’s Body. “I can’t critique this movie. It’s to me, a perfect movie,” she said.

The film starred Seyfried as Needy, a nerdy character whose best friend is Megan Fox’s Jennifer, who becomes possessed by a demon and eats boys at their high school. It was directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Lisa Frankenstein.)

The promotion was targeted to male audiences, with Fox seen in sexualized posters and ads. When really, the movie’s themes were about female empowerment and friendship. “If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing. The marketing sucked. It just did.

Amanda Seyfried blames poor marketing on Jennifer’s Body flopping
Image
Jennifer’s Body should have done far better than it did at the box office, even if it was in the poster alone: a red-hot Megan Fox (already a sex symbol of the Maxim variety) in a short dress sitting on top of a desk that’s hiding a severed body part. But it didn’t work – and it’s the marketing itself that co-star Amanda Seyfried thinks is to blame for the audience not finding Jennifer’s Body.

Speaking with GQ (via EW), Amanda Seyfried said that the reason Jennifer’s Body only made $16 million domestically had to do with how Fox bungled the way to pitch it to audiences. “If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing. The marketing sucked. It just did, and we all agree…The marketing team cheapened it, like it was just, you know, a romp. A gory romp. I think they ruined it.

Per Screen Rant, Seyfried commented on a possible sequel to Jennifer's Body while at a Toronto screening of her newest film, Seven Veils. The 'Powerpuff' Leaked Trailer Actually Showed Some Potential
Image
It is highly likely that the trailer for the scrapped live-action adaptation ofPowerpuff Girls, called Powerpuff, has reached your desk. While technically not an official trailer ever intended to be released to the public, the existing footage from the planned series was stitched together into a trailer that showcased what might have been...and it was something. The idea of a live-action Powerpuff Girls series following the trio as they've grown up and reunited in their early 30s sounds like a joke premise, and the footage shown off features green screen compositing that looks straight out of a Funny or Die sketch.

Initially announced in 2020, Powerpuff's strange premise and the news that Academy Award winner Diablo Cody would write it certainly raised a few eyebrows but led to some curiosity about what might have been the most high-profile pilot that season. Despite an impressive cast that included Chloe Bennett (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Blossom,...

'Powerpuff Girls' Fans Slam The CW's Live-Action Trailer as Worst Ever
Image
It is not often that a leaked trailer for a canceled project is met with whoops of joy, but that is exactly the reaction that the reveal of The CW’s Powerpuff Girls series has received. It is now almost two years since the plug was pulled on the live-action iteration of the iconic animated series, and while there was outcry from Powerpuff Girls fans everywhere at the time, the only crying going on now is tears of joy that the “god-awful” series never saw the light of day.

Take a trip back to 2020, when the first word of a live-action Powerpuff Girls series was revealed to a reasonable level of excitement. The following year, the lead trio of Chloe Bennett, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault were cast as older versions of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, respectively, and a script by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier was in place for the pilot episode.

Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body (2009)
Amanda Seyfried Talks ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel: ‘We’re Working On It!’
Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body (2009)
A sequel to “Jennifer’s Body” is in the works, at least according to Amanda Seyfried.

“I think we’re making another,” Seyfried told a fan at a Toronto screening of her new thriller “Seven Veils.” “I did not confirm it! I said, ‘I think’ … We’re working on it!”

The actress then winked at the delighted fan. The moment was captured in a TikTok video, which you can watch below.

Seyfried starred in the 2009 horror-comedy as Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, the nerdy friend of Jennifer (Megan Fox) who becomes possessed by a demon and starts chowing down on her male admirers at their high school. The onus is then on Needy to save the day and the lives of her classmates. The movie was directed by Karyn Kusama and has become a cult classic in the years since its release.

When the movie first came out, however, it was universally panned by critics.

A 'Jennifer's Body' Sequel Is Being Worked On, Teases Amanda Seyfried
Image
There are many cult classics that fans have clamored to have a sequel made of, and there might be none bigger in recent memory than 2009's Jennifer's Body. The film was stifled by a poor marketing campaign that stalled its box office, but it did go on to become a cult hit in the years since its release as fans began to see writer Diablo Cody's true intentions for the movie. As the cult status of Jennifer's Body has grown, sequel news has continued to surface every so often, but fans might have just gotten the biggest hint yet that the follow-up is in the works from one of the film's stars, Amanda Seyfried.

During a Toronto screening of her film Seven Veils, via Bloody Disgusting, Seyfried was asked about a sequel to Jennifer's Body, and the actress gave a confident answer before essentially downplaying the confirmation. Seyfried said,...

Leaked ‘Trailer’ for CW’s Scrapped ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Pilot Shows an Alcoholic Bubbles
Image
A so-called trailer for The CW’s canceled “Powerpuff Girls” live-action show is circulating online — and let’s just say it’s easy to see why this one didn’t make it to air.

Sources from The CW confirmed to Variety that the video does indeed feature footage from the scrapped series. However, an official trailer for the pilot was never actually made. Instead, the video that’s circulating online as its “trailer” appears to be a fan-made collection of several scenes from the project put together, including an alcoholic Bubbles drunkenly burping and Buttercup refusing to wear her green dress because it’s “normative and ass-ugly.”

This too-real show was ordered in 2020. In the live-action series, the citizens of Townsville turn against the crime-fighting trio, causing them to break up. But when darkness returns to their home, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup reunite. The series was written by Heather Regnier...

Image
A live-action version of The Powerpuff Girlswas announced by The CW in 2020, but it never got off the ground and was besieged by production issues. Now, half a decade later, a full-length trailer for the show has leaked online, giving a clue as to what it would've been. This is finally giving some insight as to how the Diablo Cody-written show would've played — which is to say, very differently than the original animated series.

CW’s ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Footage Leaks: Bubbles Is Drunk, Buttercup Hates ‘Gender Normative’ Costume and More From Canceled Show
Image
In 2021, The CW ordered and shot a live-action “Powerpuff Girls” pilot starring Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault and Donald Faison, only for the series to be canceled and never see the light of day — until now.

Footage from the canceled series has been leaked onto YouTube and made into a trailer. Sources at CW confirmed to Variety that the footage is real, but a final trailer was never assembled before “Powerpuff Girls” was axed. At the time of the cancellation, CW may have been putting together a trailer for upfronts, but sources say the leaked footage would not have passed CW standards. The network sometimes used outside vendors to assemble trailers, so the leak could have been a rejected trailer from a third party. It may also have been a Warner Bros. TV trailer created for L.A. screenings or San Diego Comic Con.

Nevertheless, the leaked footage spread on social media Thursday.

Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Trailer Leaks 4 Years After Pilot Was Filmed for Canceled Series
Image
For better or for worse, The CW's live-action Powerpuff Girls was put out to pasture before the show ever made it to the air. It came pretty close, however, to the point where a trailer was made for the ill-fated series.

On Reddit, the newly-revealed trailer was shared, revealing over three and a half minutes of footage from the Powerpuff Girls reboot. The trailer showcases how the live-action adaptation would have adapted some of the whimsical elements of the cartoon series, reimagining the group as they would appear as young adults in the real world. It's a zany concept, which might have been the idea, though it could be even more insane than some fans would expect. The trailer can be watched below.

Powerpuff: Leaked Trailer For Scrapped CW Series Starring Chloe Bennet Is Weirdest Thing You'll Watch Today
Image
The CW announced plans for Powerpuff in 2020. Understandably, fans of Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls were in equal parts excited and filled with trepidation about a live-action sequel.

The network's approach to the material raised eyebrows from the start, largely because each member of the iconic trio was set to be portrayed by, and as, adults. Still, Diablo Cody and Heather Regnie's role in developing the project felt like a step in the right direction, as did the fact Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Chloe Bennet was tapped to play Blossom.

Dove Cameron was chosen as Bubbles, with Yana Perrault picked to bring Buttercup to life on screen. Scrubs alum Donald Faison, meanwhile, was cast as Professor Utonium.

After being shot, the pilot was revealed to have fallen flat, with The CW's former Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz admitting the whole thing was a "miss.

Lost ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Trailer Leaks Online
Image
A live-action series based on The Powerpuff Girls was in development at The CW back in 2020. The show was meant to depict Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as “disillusioned twentysomethings,” dealing with the consequences of their childhoods spent fighting crime. The show would have shown the girls reuniting when the world needed them most.

The series was being produced by Warner Bros. Television Studios, with Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody writing the script. The pilot was officially ordered in February 2021, with Maggie Kiley set to direct.

The cast included Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Donald Faison was cast as Professor Utonium, and Tom Kenny was returning as the narrator from the original cartoon.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel Teased By Star Amanda Seyfried: “I Think We’re Making Another One”
Image
Legacy sequels, reboots, and delayed follow-up installments are extremely commonplace in the world of horror filmmaking and it sounds like “Jennifer’s Body,” a cult horror film that ended up becoming quite popular long after its theatrical release, is potentially getting a second installment over fifteen years later.

Written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno”) it was helmed by Karyn Kusama and released by 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox), which paired actresses Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox with the latter being comically sacrificed (by a character played by Adam Brody) only to be resurrected as a demonic entity that starts feeding on her male classmates.

Amanda Seyfried Hints at ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel: “I think we’re making another one”

It looks like Jennifer’s Body might finally be getting a sequel! Amanda Seyfried, who starred in the 2009 horror-comedy alongside Megan Fox, recently teased that a follow-up is in the works.

At a Toronto screening of her film Seven Veils, Seyfried responded to a fan’s question about a possible sequel. “I think we’re making another one,” she said in a TikTok clip. She quickly added, “I didn’t confirm it! I said, ‘I think’,” before winking and saying, “We’re working on it!”

Amanda Seyfried says she thinks there will be a Jennifer’s Body sequel
Image
Who found pieces of Jennifer’s body? The Diablo Cody-scripted horror flick fared poorly at the box office upon release in 2009, never getting past the #5 spot where it debuted. From there, its domestic numbers virtually matched its budget. But it has developed a strong cult following since and is generally considered to be one of the most underrated and misunderstood horror movies of its decade. But is the fanbase hungry enough now for a sequel? It seems so, as co-star Amanda Seyfried has teased that there may be more.

Seyfried – who played Anita “Needy” Lesnicki – recently chatted with IndieWire, suggesting that there is something in the works for Jennifer’s Body 2. “I think we’re making another one. I didn’t confirm it! I said, ‘I think.’” Realistically, that “thinking” is enough for fans to get excited and speculate just what a sequel could bring, especially given how the first one ended,...

Amanda Seyfried discusses possibility of a Jennifer's Body sequel
Image
Hopefully you haven't had your fill of legacy sequels or continuations yet because it sounds like a new Jennifer's Body movie might be in development! During the recent premiere of her Canadian drama Seven Veils, star Amanda Seyfried chatted with some fans and, when asked about the sequel possibility, cheekily said that she thinks a sequel might be happening. Watch the TikTok video here.

Someone asks her if she just confirmed the news and Seyfried responds, "I didn't confirm it, I said I think," and then she playfully winks at the group. That sounds like promising news to me! Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean Jennifer's Body 2 is really going to happen, but it is certainly a positive sign of the movie's future.

It would be nice to see Seyfried and Megan Fox reunite with writer Diablo Cody and maybe even director Karyn Kusama. The 2009 comedy horror movie was heavily...
