Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!
Plot details for Eggers’s Labyrinth sequel remain more mysterious than Jareth’s magnificent package, though sources say the film is a sequel, not a remake, to Henson’s timeless, puppet-populated masterpiece. Eggers will write the script with Sjón, his writing partner for 2022’s The Northman. The duo is...

2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Such a project has been making its way through development hell for several years, and now Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has revealed that he has heard that The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has closed a deal to co-write and direct the new Labyrinth film!
This project first started moving forward in 2016, when Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel writer Nicole Perlman signed on to write the screenplay. Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) was hired to direct the film in 2017, and he wrote his own draft of the script with Jay Basu. The script was complete by October 2018… but the project didn’t go into production,...

From Evil Dead to Alien: Romulus, Fede lvarez has directed some of the best horror movies of the past decade but not all of his films have been quite that great. lvarez first caught Hollywoods attention when he dropped his short film Ataque de Pnico! on YouTube in 2009. He was quickly recruited by Sam Raimis Ghost House Pictures to develop his debut feature, and that debut feature ended up being a remake of Raimis own debut feature, The Evil Dead. lvarezs 2013 Evil Dead introduced the franchise to a whole new generation of horror fans.
Since Evil Dead put lvarez on the map as an exciting new voice in the genre, hes become one of the most sought-after horror directors in Hollywood. Hes helmed daring original projects, like Dont Breathe, and tackled other daunting reboots of legendary franchises, like his Alien movie. lvarez is a visionary filmmaker who goes all...

Brain Henson clarifies that Labyrinth 2 is still a project they are excited about, but he suggests speaking with his sister Lisa Henson for more information. Scott Derrickson, who was attached as the director, previously stated that the script couldn't meet the studio's expectations. The biggest challenge for a Labyrinth sequel is finding a suitable replacement for the late David Bowie as the iconic Goblin King Jareth.
Brain Henson, son of the legendary Jim Henson, has offered a clarification about plans for Labyrinth 2 after reports that the project was seemingly set aside. Based on the 1986 classic that starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, long-gestating plans for a sequel began as early as 2016 when Marvel’s Nicole Perlman was tapped to pen a script alongside Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez and Jay Basu. In 2020, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson replaced Álvarez, though as recently as October last year, he cast...

Looking back, it's no wonder "Labyrinth" bombed at the box office. The last feature film directed by the late, great Jim Henson is just too inspiredly bizarre to have ever stood a chance of catching on with a mainstream audience right away, much less at the height of the Reagan era when it originally came out in 1986. It took many years of young people singing along to "Magic Dance" during slumber parties and coming to recognize their own sexual awakening right along with the then-teenaged Jennifer Connelly as Sarah for the film to become the cult classic it is today.
Indeed, dark, twisted, and occasionally sensual fantasy films that struggle to catch on with the masses before finding a niche audience were very much Henson's bag in the '80s. His and Frank Oz's 1982 feature film "The Dark Crystal" was also a financial dud that enjoyed a long...

It’s been 13 years since the Galactica reached Earth. We watched in the 2009 finale “Daybreak” as Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Apollo, Starbuck, Gaius Baltar, and Caprica Six walked towards a bright and unwritten future in their new home. It was a cathartic (but predictably divisive) ending to a six-year TV journey that remains one of the best and most influential in science fiction history. There’s no question that Battlestar Galactica paved the way for other serious, gritty political sci-fi dramas like The Expanse and the recently released Foundation adaptation.
But Battlestar Galactica‘s legacy is one thing. What about its future? That’s a question NBCUniversal has struggled to answer in the years since our heroes first touched down on our planet. There were multiple attempts at spin-offs directly after the flagship series finale on the Syfy channel, including two prequels — Caprica, which told the story of Bill Adama...

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ long-dormant Metal Gear Solid adaptation received a surprising burst of life today when Deadline reported that Oscar Isaac has been cast as Solid Snake.
The details of Isaac’s involvement are few and far between at this time, but some have already pointed out that Isaac’s loaded upcoming schedule (which includes Moon Knight and an HBO miniseries) likely means that the Metal Gear Solid movie likely won’t start filming until sometime later in 2021. Even then, that’s an optimistic projection that doesn’t necessarily account for the million things that can happen between now and then as well as the chaotic state of the film industry these days. The story of the often delayed Uncharted adaptation should give you some indication of how far away the Metal Gear Solid movie really is from being finished.

Labyrinth 2 has found its director, as Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson has been tapped by TriStar Pictures to direct the upcoming sequel. Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed Hulu's Into the Dark: My Valentine, has also signed on to write the screenplay. Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company will produce, with Brian Henson executive producing alongside C. Robert Cargill. Blanca Lisa will also shepherd the project for The Jim Henson Company with Caellum Allen and Nicole Brown supervising for TriStar Pictures.
After finding success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing Doctor Strange, Derrickson was set to also take the reins for the upcoming sequel. Due to creative differences, Derrickson has since departed the project, but it apparently wouldn't take long for him to find his next major fantasy franchise to be a part of. 16 years on from Joel Schumacher’s 2004 take on The Phantom of the Opera, Universal may be going back to the property for another musical adaptation. Sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us National Treasure 3 and Now You See Me 3 were in the works months before they were announced – say that there’s a reboot of the story in development at Universal and we have a few interesting details on how it’ll differ quite drastically from previous takes on the material.
The most dramatic change is that the setting of the story will be updated from 19th century Paris to present-day New York. Despite that, the essence of the plot remains the same. At the core is the Phantom, who possesses physical and psychological capabilities well beyond that of a normal man and some form of telepathy. Updated with Sunday figures: In the wake of Terminator: Dark Fate’s failure at the B.O., and Paramount’s recent decision to make Beverly Cops 4 for Netflix, we have the further breakdown of cinema IP in Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, which is tanking with a God-awful $8.6M domestic opening, $27.9M worldwide (from 26 markets), 3 Stars on Screen Engine-Comscore’s PostTrak, and a B+ Cinemascore.
The Elizabeth Banks-directed-written and produced pic is also opening in 27 offshore markets, China being one where it’s also bombing, with a $7.8M 3-day take in third place behind No. 1 local title Somewhere Winter ($13.1M). All of this is primed to further spur a Wtf reaction and anxiety among film development executives in town in regards to what the hell exactly works in this have-and-have-not era of the theatrical marketplace. Looks like director Elizabeth Banks' reboot of Charlie's Angels starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska has been pushed back, if only slightly. Following DC and Warner Bros. decision to move Wonder Woman 1984 from November 2019 to summer 2020, this reboot was at one point planned to fly into your local multiplex on November 1, 2019. That was because the original Drew Barrymore movie hit theaters over the first weekend in November 19 years ago. So, you know, legacy and whatnot. But today we have word that the powers that be behind the scenes have now sent the film over to a November 15, 2019 release date.
The release date shuffle is said to have come to light due to producer James Cameron and director Tim Miller's upcoming direct sequel to Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator: Dark Fate landing on November 1st as well. Not only that, but the studio gave the...

Jennifer Connelly didn't even know that Labyrinth 2 was happening. The actress recently sat down for an interview to promote Alita: Battle Angel when she was asked about the long-awaited sequel. When asked if she was interested in returning, Connelly looked pretty surprised and said, "I didn't even know that, to be honest."
So, it doesn't look like Jennifer Connelly will be back as her Sarah character from the iconic Labyrinth unless something pretty big happens in the near future.
It has been reported that the script for Labyrinth 2 is complete, but director Fede Alvarez recently clarified and revealed that a draft of the script is complete, which means that there will more than likely need to be some rewrites before the production process begins. With that being said, Alvarez states that he never believes that a script is truly finished and went on to say that the first draft that they have is "amazing.

The Battlestar Galactica movie has found itself a new writer. Universal Pictures has been developing a new big screen adaptation of the classic sci-fi series for several years now. As is often the case with projects such as these, it takes a while to crack the right story and for the stars to align. Now, the studio has brought in writer Jay Basu to help get the screenplay where it needs to be in order to make this movie a reality.
According to a new report, Universal has hired Jay Basu to rewrite the screenplay for Battlestar Galactica, working from a previous draft penned by Lisa Joy, of Westworld fame. Basu most recently worked on Sony's reboot of the Dragon Tattoo franchise, The Girl in the Spider's Web. He's also working alongside Fede Alvarez on Labyrinth 2. Jay Basu has been tapped to rewrite the screenplay for “Battlestar Galactica,” Universal Pictures’ reimagining of the 1978 television series created by Glen Larson, individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively tell TheWrap. An earlier draft of the script was written by Lisa Joy (“Westworld”).
Francis Lawrence will direct the film. Dylan Clark will produce for his Dylan Clark Productions alongside Michael De Luca through his Michael De Luca Productions. Scott Stuber will executive produce.
Like “Star Wars,” “Battlestar Galactica” was a 1970s space opera that traded on special effects, amazing hair, and a strange world. The show was a response to the success of George Lucas’ film, with its own space battles and spooky, robotic bad guys. Time Magazine listed it as one of the 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time.

Chicago – There is nothing wrong with revisiting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That tattoo has made beaucoup bucks in book and film forms (both foreign language and Americanized versions), and Claire Foy taking over for Rooney Mara in the title role is seamless. So why the totally lackluster story? Is this a narrative source problem?

The film, directed by Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is stylish and good looking, the performances are good and the production design works, but it devolves into style-over-substance confusion that meanders to a foregone conclusion. What began as a premise with a mysterious female computer sporting the titular tattoo – who also knows martial arts, weaponry and the chess game of staying one move ahead – has run out of steam as The Girl becomes a wrecking crew, who is invulnerable to being shot, drugged and generally beaten to a pulp. It’s pretty damn...

Illumination and Universal’s “The Grinch,” a remake of the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” earned $2.2 million in Thursday previews from 3,200 screens. It will open on 4,140 screens this weekend.
Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $50 million for “The Grinch” and as high as $62 million based on numbers from independent trackers. Illumination’s previous Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Lorax,” exceeded expectations by opening to $70.2 million in March 2012. Both “The Lorax” and “The Grinch” have reported $75 million budgets, consistent with other Illumination films. More recently, Illumination’s 2016 film “Sing” opened to only $1.7 million in Thursday previews on the way to a $35.2 million opening.
“The Grinch” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character along with Rashida Jones and Kenan Thompson, telling the story of a lonely green grouch who concocts a plan to steal Christmas. Longtime Illumination director Yarrow Cheney directs with Scott Mosier.

While “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” failed to leave much of a mark on the box office, this weekend should see the start of a dominant period for family films, starting with Illumination/Universal’s “The Grinch.” The Dr. Seuss adaptation should post a solid opening, but will it be a major factor as more films fight for families in the coming weeks?
Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $50 million for “The Grinch” from 4,140 screens, with independent trackers projecting estimates as high as $62 million. By comparison, Illumination’s previous Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Lorax,” opened to $70.2 million in March 2012 and grossed $214 million domestically. For those who wanted more of the artful meditation on societal misogyny that David Fincher brought to his 2011 film version of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Swedish crime drama The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, you have my condolences. The Girl in the Spider’s Web, directed with gun-to-the-head urgency by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe), settles for being a tension-packed, go-go-go thriller that will pump adrenaline into your nervous system for nearly all of its suspenseful if implausible 117 minutes. Oscar nominee Rooney Mara is out as the Lisbeth Salander; we now get Claire Foy,...

It’s never too early to cash in on a little Yuletide spirit.
Universal and Illumination are seeing green as “The Grinch” anticipates to earn between $55 million to $65 million when it launches on 4,140 screens. The animated comedy is expected to dominate over “The Girl In the Spider’s Web” and “Overlord,” the two other wide releases hitting theaters this weekend.
In the adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss tale, Benedict Cumberbatch voices the animated grouch who loathes Christmas. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury, and Pharrell Williams. Frequent Illumination collaborator Yarrow Cheney took on directing duties with Scott Mosier.
“The Grinch” is the second Dr. Seuss story that Illumination, the studio behind “Despicable Me,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” and “Sing,” has brought to the big screen. In 2012, the animators produced “The Lorax,” which launched with $70 million and went on to pick up over $348 million globally.

Fede Alvarez has provided us with an update on the status of Labyrinth 2. The Jim Henson classic has had a sequel in the works for a few years now and Alvarez, whose previous credits include Don't Breathe and the Evil Dead remake, was tapped last year to helm the project. Now, he's offered us a little insight as to where the project stands and how he plans to approach it.
We recently heard that the script for Labyrinth 2 was complete. While it's true that a draft of the screenplay is done, which Fede Alvarez co-wrote with Jay Basu, who he also worked with on his latest movie, The Girl in the Spider's Web, the process is far from over. I recently had the chance to speak with the filmmaker in honor of The Girl in the Spider's Web and got some clarification from him on that front. Here's what he had to say about it.

Claire Foy is a credible Lisbeth Salander, but The Girl in the Spider's Web waters her down in bland action movie cliché.
The return of Lisbeth Salander to the big screen should be a big deal. As one of the most fascinating heroines to come out of literature in this century, Stieg Larsson’s avenging goth angel took millions of readers by storm, and then by heartache, as Larsson’s death prevented the plan to continue her adventures for years to come. Yet in Hollywood, the girl with the dragon tattoo remains an elusive figure. David Fincher’s vision and Rooney Mara’s magnetism couldn’t quite turn her into a global franchise for adults, and now The Girl in the Spider’s Web is content to simply reimagine her as something jejune and small: it turns her into a superhero.
This too is the wrong impulse.

Fede Alvarez isn’t afraid of franchises — the Uruguayan filmmaker made his feature directorial debut with the 2013 reboot of the beloved “Evil Dead” series — but he is wary of them. That’s why it’s a bit of a surprise that for his third feature, Alvarez opted to again plunge himself into a well-known franchise that’s been through two iterations. The latest film in the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” franchise, the Alvarez-directed “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” is a wholly recast take on the English-language version of the series’ first book.
Starring Claire Foy as misanthropic hacker Lisbeth Salander, the film jumps years ahead of the ending of David Fincher’s Rooney Mara-starring “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” picking up the twisted story after the events of the third book in Larsson’s Millennium trilogy. Alvarez’s film not only tells the story through Lisbeth’s eyes,...

Released in 1986, Jim Henson's Labyrinth has become a beloved cult classic over the past few decades. The fun fantasy film might have underperformed at the box office at the time, but its continued popularity over all these years suggests there's now more money to be made with the property. This has led to the production of an upcoming Labyrinth revival film, which will serve as a modern-day direct sequel to the original movie. Last year, Fede Alvarez was attached to the project to direct and co-write with Jay Basu, and the filmmaker has revealed that the screenplay for the film has been finished.
"It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can't tell you much more about it... but we have a script, and we're very excited about it so we'll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to...

Lisbeth Salander is no longer anonymous. Much as the secretive hacker would like to stay out of the spotlight, the latest on-screen incarnation of Stieg Larsson’s franchise-spawning literary anti-heroine opens with Lisbeth (Claire Foy) enacting her own kind of revenge on a badly behaved man, only for a local news outlet to instantly pin the nefarious deed on her. And yet, in this on-screen incarnation of the series — the third version to hit theaters, the fifth film total — it’s one of many changes made to the girl with the dragon tattoo, who has evolved beyond dead-eyed computer whiz into a slightly more emotional warrior with a real flair for punishing baddies.
Even better, she’s now played by Emmy-winner Foy, who turns in the best on-screen depiction of Lisbeth yet, facing down stiff competition from both original Swedish star Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara.

Djimon Hounsou has officially joined the cast of the Charlie's Angels reboot as the third Bosley. Production on the Elizabeth Banks-directed project began earlier this month, and is set for a 2019 release date. Banks has been attached to the project since 2015 and it has gone through several changes since then. One of the bigger changes is that we're going to see three Bosleys this time around, with Banks starring as one, while Hounsou and Patrick Stewart star as the other two.
It's not yet clear why the upcoming Charlie's Angels reboot will have three Bosleys, but that will probably be revealed in the near future. Bill Murray played the part in the first Charlie's Angels movie that hit theaters in 2000. Now, Djimon Hounsou, Patrick Stewart, and Elizabeth Banks will be sharing that duty, which will undoubtedly set the film apart from the previous movies. The character plays an important role in both the TV and movie versions of the franchise, as he's the man (or woman) who connects the agents to the head of the Townsend Agency that they work for. In this case, the man is going to be played by none other than Patrick Stewart.

Patrick Stewart has signed on for Charlie’s Angels, the reboot of the female crime-fighting franchise being directed by Elizabeth Banks in the works at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska have already been set as the trio of elite detectives. Banks had already been set to play Bosley, who in the original TV series was the intermediary between the women and Charlie, the group’s elusive employer and head of The Townsend Agency, who appeared via speakerphone only in the original 1970s TV series and was voiced by John Forsythe.
The new Charlie’s Angels centers on a new generation of Angels as The Townsend Agency goes global, providing security and intelligence services to a variety of private clients with offices and highly trained teams worldwide. This film focuses on one of those teams. Charlie has not been cast.
