Sinners Overtakes Thunderbolts* In Thursday Box Office As IMAX Return Hints At Similar Results This Weekend

Ryan Coogler's Sinners continues its reign as a significant feel-good news story of the year, as the vampire pic continues to maintain considerable audience interest.

Yesterday's box office figures reveal a surprising, albeit narrow, victory for the horror film over Marvel's Thunberbolts*. This unexpected win in its fifth week of release suggests another robust upcoming weekend for Sinners, as Thunderbolts* The New Avengers enters its third frame.

The flip-flop in box office positions likely correlates with Sinners returning to select IMAX screens across the country.

#Sinners took back the #1 spot from #Thunderbolts on Thu May 15. Return of IMAX 70mm scrns certainly helped.

Final Destination: Bloodlines (In Theaters) Credit – Warner Bros.

Elizabeth Olsen joins '80s vampire thriller film Flesh of the Gods
Image
It didn't seem possible to make a 1980s-set vampire thriller starring Oscar Isaac and Kristen Stewart sound even more appealing, but somehow that's exactly what has happened. Deadline reports that Elizabeth Olsen has just joined the cast of Mandy director Panos Cosmatos's film Flesh of the Gods, and based on the description it sounds like she'll be playing one of the fanged monsters.

According to the outlet, Olsen has joined the cast as the inscrutable "Nameless," a leader of a "hard-partying cabal." Nameless seduces married couple Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart) into her "surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence." The story unfolds beneath the dazzling and glamorous skies of 1980s Los Angeles, following the wealthy couple as they leave their luxurious condo for the night to venture into the night.

Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker is penning the script, based on a story devised by him and Cosmatos.

“Am I Getting Punked?”: A Popstar Auditioning For Sinners Was So Shocked By The Vampire Twist She Thought She Was “Hallucinating At The Table”
Image
One popstar reveals she auditioned for Sinners and was completely shocked at the vampire twist. The Ryan Coolger movie is a genre-bending film that has been praised by critics and audiences alike. It features Michael B. Jordan playing twins Smoke and Stack, who return to Louisiana after spending time in Chicago only to discover that a series of dangerous beings are welcoming them back. In addition to Jordan, Sinners features a leading cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Saul Williams, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and Li Jun Li.

Speaking on In Your Dreams with Owen Thiele, pop music artist Halsey speaks about her surprise auditioning for Sinners. She auditioned for the role of Mary, which was eventually played by Steinfeld. When Halsey began reading the script for her audition, she thought it was a "surface level period piece about racial politics." When she continued on, the musician wondered "am I getting punked?...

'Sinners’ Spears Gerard Butler’s 61% Rotten Tomatoes Historical Epic at Domestic Box Office
Image
Sinners, the latest vampire horror thriller from director Ryan Coogler, has officially wrapped up another successful weekend in theaters. The Michael B. Jordan-led period piece brought in another $21 million during its fourth weekend, only a 36% drop from the weekend before. Its global cumulative haul now sits at $283.3 million, with $214.4 million coming from domestic earnings and $68.9 million from international markets. Sinners’ new $214.4 million total at the domestic box office is enough to push it past 300, the legendary period epic starring Gerard Butler and directed by Zack Snyder. The film earned $210 million at the domestic box office, which amounts to $323 million when factoring in inflation. 300 also earned $243 million internationally to help its global total reach $454 million, still more than $150 million ahead of Sinners.

Sinners opened as one of the highest-rated movies of the year, and these strong reviews have held firm. At the time of writing, Sinners sits at a 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Thunderbolts* Holds On To No. 1 Spot As Sinners Passes $200M At Domestic Box Office
Image
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office, taking in $33.1 million in its second weekend of release.

This marks a 55% drop from its debut, which is a better hold than other recent MCU movies Captain America: Brave New World (down 68%), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (down 70%), The Marvels (down 78%) and Thor: Love and Thunder (down 67%).

"The New Avengers" now sits at $128.5 million in North America and $272 million globally. The movie had a reported production budget of $180 million before marketing costs, and will need to clear $400 million worldwide to turn a profit.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's Sinners also continues to perform very well, and has now passed the $200 million milestone at the U.S. box office, becoming just the sixth horror movie to do so in history after The Exorcist, Jaws, The Sixth Sense, It, and It Chapter 2.

‘Sinners’ Bites Into 95% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Classic's Box Office with Some Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti
Image
Having completed nearly a month of release in theaters worldwide, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has now firmly established itself as one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. Sinners has been delivering record-breaking holds at the box office, especially domestically. However, it’s now clear that the movie hasn’t exactly had the same level of impact in overseas territories. The movie reunites Coogler with his longtime collaborator, star Michael B. Jordan. It also continues a glorious comeback for Warner Bros this year, which was kicked off by A Minecraft Movie some weeks ago.

With $215 million domestically and $69 million from overseas territories, Sinners’ cumulative global haul stands at $283 million. It’ll pass the $300 million milestone in a few days, which would also put it ahead of 2023’s viral sensation, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and John Krasinski’s acclaimed A Quiet Place: Part II. It has already overtaken the lifetime...

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova: Everything We Know So Far About The Kaiju Sequel
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The MonsterVerse has become one of the most reliable, slow and steady cinematic universes going in Hollywood. Tracing its roots back to Gareth Edwards' gritty, grounded, divisive hit "Godzilla" in 2014, the franchise has since expanded to five increasingly wild movies, a TV show in the form of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," comics books, and even video games. Now, Warner Bros. and Legendary are reuniting once again for another kaiju-filled cinematic romp coming our way in 2027.

While virtually nothing has been revealed yet in terms of plot details, the studio has confirmed that "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" has an official release date. Given that 2024's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" became the biggest movie in MonsterVerse history, that's not remotely surprising. So, what is "Supernova" going to bring to the table? Does the term relating to the implosion of a...

Legendary Pictures has officially revealed the title for its next kaiju showdown, and it’s going nuclear — the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. And more importantly: will Godzilla and Kong need space suits? If they don't, we're out.

Production is already underway in Queensland, Australia, marking the fourth MonsterVerse entry to shoot in the region after Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong, and The New Empire. Legendary is once again rolling cameras at Village Roadshow Studios, where the film is expected to pump over Aud$93 million into the local economy and support more than 400 cast and crew members. ‘Sinners’ Takes a Bite out of ‘Top Gun’ at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Sinners is set to enter its fourth full weekend in theaters soon, but the vampire horror film from director Ryan Coogler is showing no signs of slowing down at the box office. Sinners has started the week strong by adding another $7 million to its domestic total in the first two days, which has helped it reach a global haul of $187 million. This is enough to push it past the original Top Gun, which grossed $180 million at the domestic box office back in 1986. When adjusted for inflation, Top Gun’s domestic total is around $525 million. Sinners has also added $57 million from international markets to help its global total reach $244 million, and it will certainly push beyond the $250 million mark this weekend and towards $300 million.

Starring in dual leading roles of Smoke and Stack in Sinners is Michael B. Jordan, who has worked with Ryan Coogler on every film of the director’s career so far.

It's already among the highest-grossing horror movies ever made.

This past weekend, Sinners overtook a string of horror titles on the box office charts. Among them was Nosferatu. Released during the packed holiday season last year, the movie made nearly $100 million domestically and over $180 million worldwide. Image
The following contains major spoilers for Sinners.
