German star Veronica Ferres (Rossini, Crisis, Salt & Fire) has joined the cast of sword and sorcery reboot Red Sonja.
Ferres will play the mother of Red Sonja and the Goddess Ashera in the new film, which is being pitched as more an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s original Marvel comic than a reboot of the 1985 feature starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 80s film was a notorious flop. Producers Millennium Media are also handling international sales.
Italian-American actress Matilda Lutz (Revenge) is playing Red Sonja. Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury and Katrina Durden co-star.
M.J. Bassett (Rouge, Silent Hill: Revelation) is directing, taking over from Joey Soloway, who is still attached as an executive producer on the project. Red Sonja is currently shooting at Millennium’s Nu Boyana studios in Sofia, Bulgaria.

A few months ago, Nicholas Jarecki's Crisis was a hot ticket movie. Full disclosure - I'm a voting member of the Critics Choice Association. Given how positively the director's previous movie, Arbitrage, was received we were given early access to it for awards consideration. Very shortly after we received our copies, the allegations against Armie Hammer surfaced. Given that he's one of the three stars (opposite Gary Oldman and Evangeline Lilly),…...

Gary Oldman in Crisis. Nicholas Jarecki: 'I thought there was a lot of explosive energy with this cast that could generate good thriller tension' Photo: Quiver Distribution Writer/director Nicholas Jarecki isn’t scared to tackle hot-button issues. His debut fiction feature, Arbitrage took on the complexity of hedge-fund malfeasance and, now, almost a decade later, he’s back with Crisis, a multi-strand film that considers the pharmaceutical drugs crisis in America. In one plot arc, Fda agent Jake (Armie Hammer) is working on a major drugs sting, a complex situation that will lead his path to cross that of grieving mum Claire (Evangeline Lilly), who is taking the law into her own hands to find out what happened to her son. Elsewhere, a college professor (Gary Oldman), who has spent his career rubberstamping tests for Big Pharma discovers the latest opioid in his lab may not be the...

As predicted, Roadshow’s The Dry has crossed the $20 million mark.
This means the Robert Connolly film, based on Jane Harper’s best selling novel, is now the 14th highest grossing Australian film of all time, surpassing titles such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Muriel’s Wedding and The Dish (not adjusting for inflation).
And the mystery drama is likely to still have life in it, with star and producer Eric Bana doing a set of Q&As screenings this week.
“The astounding success of The Dry confirms what Roadshow has always known, that there will always be an appetite for quality Australian productions which can without a doubt rival their Hollywood counterparts at the box office,” said Roadshow Films CEO Joel Pearlman.
“We will continue working with local industry and our partners in exhibition to deliver these crowd favourites to the big screen.”

When films like Steven Soderberg's Traffic used to take on the drugs trade, it was generally heroin or cocaine that was the 'bad guy' and now Nicholas Jarecki's latest turns its attention to the more everyday but equally deadly addiction caused by American's prescription opioid crisis. It's a big subject and Jarecki certainly doesn't lack ambition or good intent - as evidenced by his previous financial thriller Arbitrage.
He comes at the drug idea from multiple angles, although this time he struggles to make its dustier, more corporate elements fully gel with its more traditional thriller and melodrama trappings. There's the sort of amount of material here that used to form the basis for an entire series of The Shield, so even with a running time of two hours, it's difficult for anything to be dwelt on in detail although the high calibre acting and decent pace mean it's never less.

Even with new titles on VOD and streaming charts, the Oscar nominations may shake things up. Netflix received 35 total nominations among 14 titles, providing an unprecedented chance to see how many titles return to charts. The two top performers to date have been “Hillbilly Elegy” and “The Midnight Sky.” Nomination leader (with 10) “Mank” barely caused a wrinkle on the charts, placing tenth for a single day when it was released.
Currently, the dominant VOD titles are Sony’s standard-price ”Monster Hunter” and PVOD “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.” However, the other #1 is Nicholas Jarecki’s “Crisis” (Quiver) in its second week. The tripych of opiate-crisis stories starring Gary Oldman and Armie Hammer showed initial response last week and is now tops at Apple TV (which often foretells success later at other sites). For some reason (possibly a listed price of $9.99?), it doesn’t show up on the top 500 titles at Google Play.

This week brings more theatrical releases than American audiences have gotten in ages — and possibly more than they’re ready for now, as vaccine rollouts still leave people questioning whether it’s safe to do things like go to the movies.
Some, such as Warner Bros.’ “Tom & Jerry,” can also be viewed via streaming for HBO Max subscribers. Others — including Anthony Hopkins-starrer “The Father” (a subjective look at the impact of dementia on an elderly man) and the aptly named Armie Hammer movie “Crisis” — will be coming to VOD shortly, but are opening today only in cinemas.
For those who are either playing it safe or simply don’t have access to theaters, subscription streaming services are bringing a pair of high-profile music-themed movies. The first, Apple’s “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” gives audiences an intimate look at the pop star on her way up.

The brutal opioid crisis in America deserves an all-encompassing epic, and that is what filmmaker Nicholas Jarecki is determined to deliver with Crisis. And while his new film, which he both wrote and directed, certainly has the cast and the scope to succeed, there is not quite enough meat on its bones. In short, Jarecki’s narrative reach exceeds its grasp. Despite all that’s going on, there is precious little to latch on to.
The obvious (and perhaps lazy) cinematic comparison here is Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, the celebrated drug war drama from the year 2000. Both films introduce multiple plot threads that all connect somewhere along the drug-trafficked chain. In Crisis, we follow Jake Kelly (Armie Hammer), a DEA agent at the razor’s edge of bringing down multiple elements of an international opioid smuggling operation; Claire Reimann (Evangeline Lilly), a recovering addict who’s struck a tragic blow...

Claire is an architect, mother, and recovering Oxy addict attempting to balance her life. Tyrone is a college professor who researches new medicines for a major conglomerate. Jake is a DEA agent posing as a drug trafficker who wants to bring down two major smuggling rings. Bill is a high-powered executive eager to push through his allegedly non-addictive new painkiller. Connected both loosely — often, very loosely — and sometimes inconceivably, by the raging opioid epidemic, each of the characters in Nicholas Jarecki’s scattered “Crisis” is at the mercy of appetites they can’t control. Taking an apparent nod from “Traffic,” though without its finesse or sprightliness,
Jarecki’s long-awaited follow-up to his similarly dry — but still entertaining and informative — 2012 narrative debut, “Arbitrage,” certainly has good intentions. The opioid crisis and the many lives it has upended and ruined is fertile ground for cinematic exploration, all the better to illuminate tragic stories for examination and reflection.

Crisis is a dramatic thriller that addresses the opioids epidemic from multiple points of view. A star-studded ensemble cast weaves together three separate storylines to a climactic juncture. Writer/director Nicholas Jarecki (Arbitrage) illustrates the root causes of opioid addiction from corporate production and criminal trafficking to the deadly results on city streets. The individual chapters are well-acted and sobering. But the film falls short in a predictable third act that becomes contrived and sanctimonious.
Crisis takes place in Detroit, Michigan, and across the Canadian border in Montreal. We're introduced to Claire Reimann (Evangeline Lilly) at an opioids support meeting. Setting out to be the Traffic of the opioid era, Nicholas Jarecki’s Crisis presents a trilogy of storylines whose tendrils involve everyone from big-pharma execs to undercover cops to addicts at various stages of despair.
Sprawling and serious but not nearly as involving as it should be, the pic — Jarecki’s sophomore feature, after 2012’s similarly topical Arbitrage — may well attract interest for unwanted reasons, as one of the films co-lead Armie Hammer completed before his current social media-stoked scandals hit. The actor’s stiff, uninteresting performance here is a reminder of how spotty his filmography has been to date....

Some problems can’t be solved with a prescription. Attempting to do for the opioid epidemic what “Traffic” did for the war on drugs, Nicholas Jarecki’s “Crisis” sets up three separate storylines — a grieving mama with a grudge (Evangeline Lilly), an undercover DEA operative with an imminent bust (Armie Hammer) and a compromised research professor with a conscience (Gary Oldman) — and proceeds to braid them together for maximum melodrama.
It’s compelling, relevant filmmaking designed to cover all aspects of this ever-escalating national-health issue, thrown for a loop by an unforeseen crisis of its own: the very public scrutiny of Armie Hammer’s own alleged addictions. Dense but never difficult to follow, “Crisis” is crammed with screaming matches, shootouts and plenty of those bleary-eyed scenes where desperate relatives try to process the impact of drug abuse on their loved ones — which is to say, there’s no shortage of...

Is the opioid crisis finally getting a movie and perhaps getting the “Traffic” treatment from multiple perspectives on the cause and effect? That seems to be the case with Nicholas Jarecki’s upcoming dramatic-thriller “Crisis” starring Academy Award-winner Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour,” “Mank“) and Golden Globe-nominees Armie Hammer (“Call Me By Your Name,” “The Social Network“) and Evangeline Lilly (“Antman and The Wasp,” “The Hurt Locker“), to name just a few in a big ensemble cast.

Exclusive: Billy Bryk (Wynonna Earp) has joined the cast of Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, which, as we revealed earlier this year, will star Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore.
The A24 movie, a mother-son comedy-drama, has been scripted by Eisenberg and is being produced by Emma Stone and her SNL writer-director partner Dave McCary alongside Moore.
Inspired by Eisenberg’s Audible project of the same name, the film will have a slightly different focus than the audiobook, which was scripted by and starred Eisenberg. Set over three decades, the six-part audio show follows three members of a family: Nathan, a father learning to connect with his newborn son; Rachel, a young college student seeking to find her place in a relationship and in life; and Ziggy, a teenager hoping to figure out where he came from, and where he’s headed.

Tiff 19: Part I: Awaiting the plane at Lax to Toronto International Film Festival, September 4–11, 2019Lax by Paul Revere Williamss,FaiaTiff this year, under the new direction of Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente, felt the same and different at the same time. Fitness companies Equinox and SoulCycle are currently being boycotted after it was revealed billionaire owner Stephen Ross is hosting a Hamptons fundraiser for Donald Trump, but he’s hardly the only major executive giving financial support to the president. Armie Hammer took to social media August 9 to call out Isaac Perlmutter, the former CEO and current chairman of Marvel Entertainment.
“Hey, while everyone seems to be on this Equinox thing, it might be a good time to mention that one of Trump’s largest financial contributors is the chairman of Marvel Entertainment (Isaac Perlmutter),” Hammer wrote. “Just saying.”
Perlmutter became a member of Marvel Comics’ board of directors in April 1993. The executive was serving as vice chairman of Marvel by November 2001, followed by chief executive officer of Marvel Comics in January 2005. Perlmutter remained the CEO of Marvel Entertainment following the company’s acquisition by Disney and to this day serves as chairman.

Dracula actors Gary Oldman and Luke Evans posed for a photo together posted on the latter's Twitter account, and it's a real treat for big fans of vampire movies. Of course, both actors have portrayed the iconic vampire in unconnected movies, each offering vastly different performances for the character. Captioned as "When Dracula met Dracula," the actors are shown bearing their teeth for the camera, with Evans actually wearing prop fangs. As seriously as the two played the roles in their respective movies, it's amusing to see the two of them together enjoying their reminiscing over previously playing the same monster in their movie careers.
Luke Evans and Gary Oldman were likely working on the upcoming movie Dreamland when the photo was snapped, as Evans inserted a hashtag referencing the movie on his tweeted photo. Written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki, Dreamland will also star Evangeline Lilly, Armie Hammer, Veronica Ferres,...

Luke Evans, Mia Kirshner, Tony winner Michael Aronov and Martin Donovan are the latest to join Nicholas Jarecki‘s dramatic thriller Dreamland. They’ll co-star opposite Gary Oldman, Armie Hammer, Evangeline Lilly, Greg Kinnear, Michelle Rodriguez, and Lily-Rose Depp in the opioid crisis pic, which is shooting in Montreal.
Dreamland follows three colliding stories: A drug trafficker (Hammer) arranges a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation between Canada and the U.S.; an architect (Lilly) recovering from an OxyContin addiction tracks down the truth behind her son’s involvement with narcotics; and a university professor (Oldman) battles unexpected revelations about his employer, a drug company with deep government influence bringing a new “non-addictive” painkiller to market.
Evans will play a pharmaceutical executive on the verge of a major breakthrough.
