Exclusive: Eventually released in China much later than anticipated, the Orlando Bloom starring S.M.A.R.T. Chase was not the big box office winner its producers desired but Shanghai-based Bliss Media have come out victors in a long legal BTS battle over the pic.
Almost two years after Stateside set Das Films sued Bliss in Los Angeles Superior Court for kicking them off the project, an arbitration final award has come down strongly in favor of the Wei Han founded company over the action flick that came out last fall in the Middle Kingdom.
“Bliss Media established that Das Films breached the Producer Deal Memo, breached the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing and, through Das, negligently misrepresented Donaldson’s availability,” writes retired Judge Terry Friedman in the August 13 final award arbitration ruling, noting the shell game seemingly played with bringing November Man helmer Roger Donaldson on as S.

Exclusive: Fortitude International to launch sales in Cannes.
Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.
Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.
Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.
Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.
Sophia Al-Maria adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Miles’s book The Wreck Of The Medusa.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Studios and Storyoscopic Films on Monday announced a joint venture whereby Storyoscopic will produce and finance approximately five or more projects a year.
Films produced under the joint venture and backed by what a source said would be at least $200m in production funding will release internationally via Relativity’s network of output partners and go through Relativity Europa Distribution (Red) in the Us.
Relativity launched Red in 2010 after it acquired Overture Films from John Malone’s Liberty Media and four years later EuropaCorp came on board in a reported $130m deal to acquire a 50% stake.
The venture comes as Relativity shifts its focus towards financing, producing and distributing family films and branded features with global appeal.
George Lee and Marcus Englefield, the duo behind 2D-to-3D conversion specialists Venture 3D, have worked with Hollywood and Chinese partners and launched Storyoscopic in 2013 to make family and genre films in the $15-50m range...

David Twohy and Vin Diesel’s may be prepping to blow the doors off their cult Riddick franchise with the Merc City TV show along with a fourth – and possibly R-rated – movie, but the former is keeping busy beyond the realm of Furyans and galactic mercenaries, after Variety brings word that Twohy has been tapped to write and direct Ice Moon Rising.
Remaining in the sci-fi genre for the time being, the outlet notes that Ice Moon Rising has been hatched as an American-Chinese co-production, and will chronicle a daring space mission to Europa, one of Jupiter’s many moons that has enchanted scientists and stargazers for generations.
That’s because Europa is said to house massive oceans beneath its icy exterior, and Twohy’s feature will extrapolate that scientific reality and craft a plot involving alien creatures and wayward astronauts. Bound for Jupiter’s satellite, the Chinese and American...

A decade ago, when the Afm forged in to replace Mifed in November, it was a bastion of B-movies with B-List stars hawking themselves in multiple films, and a slew of deals that often didn’t result in anything. Now, with studios only wanting to finance sequels and superhero movies, and requiring partners to fully fund or partly pay for everything else on their slates, indie companies have new currency and are dealing with some of the biggest films in the business, with everyone from Gary Ross (The Free State Of Jones) to Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful 8) in Santa Monica courting foreign buyers.
As it sheds the schlockfest stigma the Afm once bore, attendees are focused on the increased importance of offshore returns and a more disciplined approach to the business. There’s a lot of money in the market, but rigor is key while packaging has become tougher as...

Pierce Brosnan is up this year for the entry in the older, action gentleman’s club, and the ex-Bond is a spy again. The November Man, if the trailer is to be believed, packs a lot of action into the story, and finds Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) sucked back into his life as a spy so that he can protect a witness. Naturally, part of the problem protecting her is that there may be a mole, and Devereaux doesn’t know who to trust.
This one hits on August 27th, and may be taking a chance there. Certain other movies with similarities to this one have proven they can perform well, but the tail end of summer competition might be fierce.
At any rate, I liked Brosnan as Bond, and he should be able to pull off a great turn here. I am getting a little bored of the generics of the plot synopsis,...

Relativity has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for "November Man," directed by Roger Donaldson and starring Brosnan, Olga Kurylenko, and Luke Bracey. Donaldson has a good working relationship with Relativity, as they distributed his 2008 Jason Statham-led hit "The Bank Job." Also interesting about this pairing is the fact that the cast includes an ex-Bond and ex-Bond Girl. The thriller is adapted from the Bill Granger novel, "There Are No Spies," in which a former CIA operative, who gets back into the game for a personal mission, finds himself pitted against his former protege in a plot that involves high-level CIA officials, and the Russian President-elect. Relativity has committed to a wide release sometime later this year. Written by Michael Finch and Karl Gajdusek, the film is produced by Brosnan's Irish DreamTime and Sriram Das of Das Films, in association with The Solution Entertainment Group, Merced Media Partners, and Palmstar Media Capital.

Rumors have been swirling about Hilary Swank signing on to the latest vampire flick from John Carpenter, Fangland. So much so that the actress herself has decided to address them.
"I guess that's why they call it a rumour, huh?" Swank told Empire Onlinein a recent interview thereby confirming that she has nothing to do with the project.
Fangland is an updated version of Bram Stoker's Dracula set up with Das Films and Blumhouse Prods. Sriram Das and Jason Blum are producing. Tracy Underwood's also involved in a producing capacity.
Written by former "60 Minutes" producer John Marks, it's centered on a New York-based producer who travels to Romania for an interview with a notorious European arms dealer, who turns out to be a modern-day Dracula.
Mark Wheaton (Friday the 13th '09) penned the adaptation.

Dear John and Step Up star (and Hollywood heartthrob), Channing Tatum, is set to star in and produce The Contortionist's Handbook. In this big screen adaptation of Craig Clevenger's novel of the same name — first published in 2002 — Tatum will play an identity-changing forger whose life is turned upside down when he meets a mysterious woman with a secret of her own.
The 30-year-old actor currently has a number of movie projects in production, including Haywire and The Dilemma, both due for a theater release in 2011. After romantic hit Dear John raked in an impressive $112 million dollars worldwide, Tatum is no stranger to box office success, though this new project isn't likely to appeal to his hordes of female fans.
Production on The Contortionist's Handbook is due to start next year, and will be produced by Tim Williams, Sidney Kimmel, Sriram Das and John Penotti. Tatum and Reid Carolin will also co-produce.
