'Detours' Makes Surprising Appearance Star Wars Celebration a Decade After Cancelation
Image
After more than a decade, one of the lost Star Wars projects that will probably never be seen by anyone has received a surprising acknowledgment from Lucasfilm as they celebrated 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. The project in question is the animated comedy series Star Wars: Detours, which was created by the team who brought the world Robot Chicken but was never released despite almost 40 episodes being completed and dozens of other scripts being written.

Detours’ surprising reappearance came thanks to a small reference in a poster released by Lucasfilm which incorporates characters from their many animated shows and movies, including those from The Clone Wars and Rebels, and, somehow, Detours. Fans of the world’s biggest franchises always love a good Easter egg or two making an appearance, and the poster offered up one of the most obscure of any Star Wars references you could name by including a very...

Unreleased Star Wars Comedy Acknowledged by Lucasfilm for the First Time in Over a Decade
Image
2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation, and the company commemorated its anniversary with a new poster, which was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in Shiba, Japan. While the poster mostly celebrates their successful projects, there's also a hidden reference to a Star Wars project that will probably never see the light of day. Star Wars: Detours, an animated comedy series from the Robot Chicken team, is referenced on the poster, making it the first time it's been officially acknowledged in years.

The poster features characters from all of Lucasfilm Animation's popular Star Wars series, from The Clone Wars to Rebels to Resistance, but appropriately enough for this weekend, there's a hidden Easter egg for one of the most obscure Star Wars animated series. If you look closely in the bottom right corner of the poster, you'll see a Stormtrooper with a giant head and comical goggle-eyes, taken directly from the long-lost animated series.

How George Lucas Felt About Robot Chicken's Star Wars Sketches On Adult Swim
Image
Adult Swim was founded on the tenet of delivering transgressive animated and live-action media to fill the void on Cartoon Network after kids went to sleep. If you were to compile a handful of shows that serve as a pillar of the late night programming block, "Robot Chicken" would undoubtedly be one of them. The stop-motion animated sketch show would present over 11 minutes of pure, unfiltered chaos using action figurines, dolls and an assortment of toys to lampoon all manner of pop culture. Very little was off limits after 11:30pm.

As someone who initially caught the show by accident after staying up late to watch episodes of "Family Guy," it's crazy to see the kind of legacy it's had across 11 seasons. There are a plethora of memorable sketches that have become mainstays of pop culture, such as a gummy bear getting caught in a bear trap, "Beavis and Butthead" joining the "Teen Titans,...

Seth Green Breaks Silence on Terrible Bill Murray Experience and Eddie Murphy's Advice
Image
Although he has built a great career in comedy, Seth Green, who co-created adult animated comedy show Robot Chicken, had an initiation into the industry that involves a dark encounter with none other than SNL alum Bill Murray. Green recalled meeting the Ghostbusters legend in the hallways of Studio 8 while doing Saturday Night Live, and it wasn't pretty. Green has talked about this incident in the past, but now he shares that the advice he got afterward was the only thing he needed to go on.

The actor of franchises like Austin Powers spoke to ComicBook about the 20th anniversary of Robot Chicken, the stop-motion sketch show he co-created with Matthew Senreich for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Green was asked about the incident when he got into an argument with comedy legend Bill Murray when he was just nine years old, and he was supposed to appear on...

‘Robot Chicken’ 20 Years Later: Seth Green Looks at the Evolution of the Stop-Motion Sketch Comedy Show
Image
“Robot Chicken” was not the first stop-motion comedy show to feature commercial toys for sketches, but the show has now lasted longer than anyone involved with it could have ever anticipated. For co-creator Seth Green, the original impetus for what would become “Robot Chicken” was a rather simple desire.

“We didn’t set out to make a show, and especially weren’t intending to make a show that was going to last a long time,” Green told IndieWire ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Adult Swim animated sketch comedy show. “My partner Matt Senreich and I were trying to figure out how to make just animated sketch comedy shorts using toys. I thought that was really fun.” Twenty years later, and “Robot Chicken” is still popular. It has over 200 episodes, has parodied everything from “Sesame Street” and “He-Man” to “Star Wars” and “Pokémon,” and earned two Annie Awards and six Emmys.

Seth Green Allegedly Warned ‘Robot Chicken’ Artists That His Studio Would Move to Canada If They Unionized
Image
As opposed to the artists of the computer animation community, stop-motion workers don’t have a labor union that can protect them from on-the-job hazards, ensure their livelihoods and advocate for them in abusive workplaces — and they never will, if Seth Green and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios get their way.

In a TV landscape where budgetary limitations and tightened production schedules has led to most animated shows sporting a soulless aesthetic “sameness,” the long-running Adult Swim sketch series Robot Chicken stands out as a bastion of traditional, “practical” animation. Stop-motion animation is, inarguably, far slower and more laborious than the computer-assisted alternatives, but Robot Chicken and its production company, Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, have almost single-handedly kept the art form alive — or, it would be more apt to say, the stop-motion artists of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios are doing the hard work of preserving the medium with every painstakingly staged frame of Green’s flagship series.

10 Best Adult Swim Shows Of The 2000s Ranked
Image
Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has long served as the edgier, raunchier counterpart to its mainstream, kid-friendly programming, with shows catering mainly to the teenage and adult demographic. Indeed, the best Adult Swim shows of the 2000s consists of bizarre, surrealist, and often graphic programming that sought to push the boundaries of animation. Before Rick and Morty, Bob's Burgers, and Family Guy, Adult Swim's 2000s lineup has been a main driver in popularizing adult-themed animation at the turn of the century.

While this late-night block on Cartoon Network is still going strong, the 2000s were something of a golden era for Adult Swim. It really hit the ground running when it launched in 2001, cranking out hit after hits like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Venture Bros., and further strengthened its lineup with shows like Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and the notorious Superjail! For both long-time viewers and newcomers to the Cartoon Network's edgy programming,...

Jim Lee's Rejected Star Wars Plan Would Have Changed Comics History Forever
Image
The Star Wars franchise has a long history in comics, but one rejected proposal from Jim Lee’s Wildstorm imprint might have changed comics history forever.

Ever since the release of Star Wars in 1977, George Lucas’ space saga has had a strong foothold in the comics world. Marvel Comics published a monthly series that ran for 107 issues. Marvel let the rights lapse in the late 1980s, allowing Dark Horse Comics to acquire the Star Wars license and produce a steady stream of comics for more than 20 years. After Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, fans suspected it was only a matter of time until sister company Marvel got the license to make Star Wars comics once more, something that eventually came to pass in 2015.

Robot Chicken Teams Larry David with the Avengers and It's Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Funny
Image
Robot Chicken is kicking off their 11th season with Thanos ridding the world of half it's population. We have Larry David to thank for that. Check out the Emmy-winning stop-motion animated series showing that even the Avengers are not immune to getting their feelings hurt by the perennially socially awkward, whiny and pretty judgey Larry David.

In classic Larry David style, it's everyone else's fault that he's late for a dinner reservation. Thanos (Josh Brolin), apparently mingling before his reservation, overhearing David suggest if half the population was taken out Larry would've been able to score a better parking place, hence getting his table, Thanos hooks it up! They smoked poor Jeff! And the Avengers were helpless to stop it.

If you're not familiar with Curb Your Enthusiasm, I wish we had Larry David here to skewer you, as only he can. Better yet, we could sick Susie on you,...

Syfy’s Tzgz Orders ‘The Summoner’ Animated Series From Charlie Hankin & Stoopid Buddy Stoodios
Image
Exclusive: Syfy’s Tzgz weekly late-night animation block has given a straight-to-series order to The Summoner, from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and writer, actor and New Yorker cartoonist Charlie Hankin.

Greenlit for 10 three-minute episodes to premiere next year, The Summoner is a 2D-animated series based on the short film from Hankin about Rory and his challenging roommate. (You can watch it below the story.) Rory, in his 20s and living on his own for the first time, has found himself in a small two-bedroom with the Summoner, a magical alien with the power to summon any object to his present location. This sounds potentially useful, but it isn’t—the Summoner has a tenuous grasp of English and only summons the most useless shit.

“The Summoner is a perfect example of how we’re experimenting with content for Tzgz by continuing to add smart stories from unique voices, but also playing...

Seth Green and Matthew Senreich (‘Robot Chicken’) on how their specials are good luck charms to getting in at the Emmys [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
At first, Seth Green jokes about why they submitted their Christmas special for Emmy consideration. “All of the awards that we’ve won have been for the episodes with the longest title and we feel like that’s a good luck charm,” kids Green in our recent webchat (watch the video above). But he later clarified that it was a long-form episode rather than the show’s usual brand of sketch comedy that made it feel special. Co-creator Matthew Senreich elaborates, “We usually have the best luck with our Christmas specials or any of our ‘specials.’ Things like that seem to pop a lot more at the Emmys and so we go about focusing on that for our Emmy submissions.”

Since premiering on Adult Swim in 2005, “Robot Chicken” has been a staple for the network. The show, which recently concluded its 10th season, uses stop-motion animation of action figures to satirize cartoons,...

Comic-Con ‘At Home’ Friday Schedule: Charlize Theron, ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Helstrom’

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.

The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.

Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.

The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.

All times are Pacific Daylight.

The adult animated series follows the adventures of young squire Patrick (Nicholas Hoult) as he works under a king no one particularly likes in a kingdom where no one is particularly happy.

Robot Chicken Season 10: Gordon Ramsay Grills Celebs in an Exclusive Clip
Joseph Baxter Oct 9, 2019

Check out this exclusive clip from Robot Chicken Season 10, showing a celebrity edition of MasterChef gone insanely awry.

Robot Chicken continues its wanton ridicule of any and all things in the currently-running tenth season, and the Adult Swim stop-motion series, which launched back in February 2005, continues to prove that hasn't run out of steam, or action figures, with which to parody with perfection.

Pertinently, Den of Geek has an exclusive preview clip for you, showcasing a celebrity edition of MasterChef, in which the notoriously harangue-hurling host, Gordon Ramsay, handles a bizarre lineup of celebrities. – That is, if Bob’s Burgers’ Bob Belcher, Ratatouille’s Alfredo Linguini, SpongeBob SquarePants himself and South Park‘s long-departed soul-singing cafeteria cook, Chef, qualify as “celebrities” in the conventional sense.
