How ‘Miss Austen’ Draws Fine Art from an Act of Real-Life Cultural Vandalism
Image
Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.

For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.

The BBC original certainly comes with an impressive period drama pedigree. Director Aisling Walsh won a BAFTA for her post-war miniseries “Room at the Top,” while leading lady Keeley Hawes...

12 Best Agatha Christie Movies, Ranked
Image
There's something very comforting about curling up with a cozy murder mystery. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. Little wonder that the format enjoyed a resurgence during the pandemic with millions seeking solace from the likes of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo." These old shows are so relaxing, their modern-day equivalents like "Poker Face" even helped me beat insomnia a few years back.

Although the term "cozy mystery" didn't exist when she was writing, Agatha Christie is now regarded as the mother of the format. After introducing Hercule Poirot in her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at...

Neuromancer: Briana Middleton Dons A New Costume As Molly Millions In Latest Set Photos
Image
We recently got our first look at Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard's upcoming streaming adaptation of William Gibson's Cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer, via some revealing set photos featuring Briana Middleton as Molly Millions, and we now have another look at the actress sporting a very different costume.

Molly, also known as Sally Shears and Rose Kolodny, was first introduced in Gibson's 1981 short story Johnny Mnemonic (which was adapted as a critically-lambasted 1995 movie starring Keanu Reeves) before going on to play a more significant role in the Sprawl Trilogy, Neuromancer (1984), Count Zero (1986), and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).

Millions is a ruthless, but honourable "razorgirl" (street samurai) with augmented reflexes and cybernetic implants, including razor-sharp retractable blades underneath her fingernails and vision-enhancing mirrored lenses covering her eye-sockets.

So far, Middleton is the only main cast member to be spotted on set, but other photos have revealed some background actors in various Cyberpunk-inspired outfits.

Briana Middleton is set to play Molly Millions, and as you can see from the photos below, she looks pretty much exactly how the cyborg mercenary is described in Gibson's novels.

Guy Ritchie's New Crime Series Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Guy Ritchie is famous for his take on crime dramas, and following the success of Netflix's The Gentlemen TV series, he's back to mixing feature films and television. His new crime drama has just premiered, and it features a series of A-listers.

Ritchie's first brush with television was Lock, Stock..., a seven-part British TV crime series, a spinoff of his 1998 movie Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Since then, he has exclusively focused on films until 2024, when The Gentlemen Season 1 premiered to huge success. His latest crime series, MobLand, has just premiered on Paramount+ and its first reactions on Rotten Tomatoes are underwhelming.

The gangster series has aired just one episode, but reviewers had a chance to check out the first two episodes of the new series. MobLand debuted with a 71% score from the critics, which, while it's still enthusiastic enough for a positive score, it is hardly an exciting score,...

15 Best TV Shows Like Bridgerton
Image
The period piece romantic drama genre was completely revitalized by the Netflix original series "Bridgerton." Adapting Julia Quinn's novel series of the same name, "Bridgerton" mixes high society sophistication with steamy romance featuring its growing ensemble of memorable characters. And as fans watch Netflix's expansive universe of "Bridgerton" shows, there are plenty of similar historical dramas to help them tide over the wait. These range from shows accurately exploring British history to series taking advantage of the archetypal backdrop from more stylized stories, like "Bridgerton" itself.

Each of these shows is thematically similar to "Bridgerton," beyond the trappings of historical British aristocracy in their own way. Some capture the drama of living among the English bourgeois while others focus on the bodice-ripping love stories that make "Bridgerton" so enticing. Whether you're in it for the torrid affairs or the historical trappings, there is a period piece drama for everyone.

This Sam Claflin Drama Takes a More Brutal Look at Wealth Than Saltburn'
Image
Before Saltburn portrayed the busy halls of Oxford University, The Riot Club showed the darker side of its elite student population in one of the most stomach-churning non-horror movies ever made. It may share a setting with Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, but The Riot Club removes all the whimsy and satire of Saltburn and gives a brutal portrayal of power in youthful, unforgiving hands. The movie's duration shows only a small window of time, with a vast majority focused on a single initiation dinner that takes place over one night. What transpires is a rapid spiral into chaos and destruction as the members of The Riot Club engage in drinking games and dares. Led by a cast including Max Irons, Sam Claflin, and Douglas Booth with short appearances from Challengers star Josh O'Connor and Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer, The Riot Club removes its rose-tinted glasses and shows...
