“I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.
The conflict between George and his workers speaks to the “delicate balancing act” Spector has to perform in the role because the audience loves George and yet he must do some occasionally ruthless things. The actor thinks viewers are endeared to his billionaire figure because “we have access to George… to his intimate life,...

Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

Everyone loves The Gilded Age‘s central couple, but George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha (Carrie Coon) gave fans reason to worry in Season 2. George had long been keeping Turner’s (Kelley Curran) attempted seduction secret from Bertha for months. Concealing this secret, while well intended, was a dirty act of betrayal in the eyes of Mrs. Russell. In the video interview above, Spector watches the scene where Bertha learns of the betrayal and reveals behind-the-scenes details about how it came together. Welcome to Scene Study with TV Insider. Spector gushes over his co-star while watching the scene, saying that Coon has a unique ability to just fall apart when the moment requires it. “Carrie Coon has this quality about her that you’re just rooting for her, you’re just on her side no matter what kind of character she’s playing,” he says. “She has the capacity that very...

Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Exclusive: On the heels of her acclaimed directorial debut Passing, Rebecca Hall has found her next filmmaking vehicle in Four Days Like Sunday, a mother-daughter drama inspired by her own history, which she’s written to direct and will star in for See-Saw Films.
Set in the mid 1990s, the film follows 12-year-old Jane as she begins to rebel against her role as proxy-carer for her mother Sylvia (Hall), a recently divorced and ever so slightly fading Broadway diva. During a long weekend break between concert dates, Sylvia hosts Benton, Chris and Rahim, three male dancers from her current tour, at her anachronistically grand country house. She is also expecting the arrival of Dale, her handsome younger boyfriend. As Jane does her best to protect her mother from everything that threatens to disturb her delicate equilibrium, she moves quietly from childhood into something else-wiser, freer, and more alone.

Carrie Coon is confused and under the weather, though the two don’t appear to be connected. At the tail end of her March press tour for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor caught a bug akin to bronchitis. “I don’t know if it’s bronchitis,” Coon said over Zoom. “I’m being dramatic… but that’s my job!”
Bronchitis or not, confusion isn’t one of her symptoms. It’s the result of a particularly complicated Emmy season. Typically held each September — a tradition that strains logic in and of itself, since no one really follows the old fall-to-spring broadcast television calendar anymore — the Emmys will be held twice in 2024. The 75th Primetime Emmys took place in January, after the original date in 2023 was pushed back to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes, and the 76th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September. It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.
The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

“I Don’t Understand You” spins its chaos from something lost in translation. And yet, Nick Kroll grabbing a big handful of Andrew Rannells’ ass is a universal language.
There’s an idyllic romance hidden somewhere in Brian Crano and David Craig’s destination horror-comedy that would be worth seeing on its own. The filmmakers and real-life romantic partners premiered their deceptively dreamy movie — about a couple traveling to Italy for an anniversary vacation that goes hellishly wrong — at SXSW on March 8. It rescreened at The Overlook Film Festival from April 4 to 7, where it technically fit the genre-specific bill but also suggested a much wider audience.
Moviegoers who can stomach some gore but don’t like to be jump-scared will laugh as much as any horror head when they realize that game of grab-ass was actually the neurotic Dom checking for his very pretty but occasionally helpless husband Cole’s wallet.

“Be gay, do crime” exhorts a popular internet meme, a suggestion that married writing/directing duo David Joseph Craig and Brian Cano take literally in I Don’t Understand You, an Italy-set travelogue of errors in which a little bit of bloodshed is just a speed bump on the journey to getting what you want.

Swanning around Italy like side characters from the second season of “The White Lotus,” well-to-do gay couple Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells) have decided the world is against them. As Americans, they live at a time in a country when they can legally get married, adopt and do pretty much everything straight people can — but they’re also old enough to remember when that wasn’t the case, and so they anticipate rejection and homophobia at every turn. They’re prepared for the worst, and somehow they attract it.
Loosely inspired by filmmakers Brian Crano and David Craig’s bumpy road to fatherhood, catty black comedy “I Don’t Understand You” depicts a stretch in Dom and Cole’s relationship when everything seems to be going their way … until suddenly it doesn’t. While celebrating their anniversary in Italy, the pair get the news that the baby they’ve...

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

The Gilded Age stars Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon go way back — they first shared the Broadway stage in 1984, when the Tony-winning Baranski played mother to Nixon in Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed play The Real Thing. “Who’s this young, gifted, charming woman?” Baranski recalls of first working with Nixon, who — nearly 40 years after their first collaboration — now plays Ada Brook, the sister to Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn on Julian Fellowes’ historical HBO drama.
“I was already in awe of her,” says Nixon of working with her scene partner decades ago. “I was basically a kid, but we’re only 14 years apart. She was way too young to be my mother, but that didn’t occur to me at the time.”
Adds Baranski with a laugh: “I loved playing her mother, and now I’m her older sister. Don’t you love showbiz?”

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 6, “Warning Shots.”] Morgan Spector‘s George Russell saw the climax of the workers’ strike in The Gilded Age Season 2’s sixth episode. Tensions reached a tipping point when Henderson (Darren Goldstein), the union’s leader, and his men faced being shot and killed as they tried to prevent scabs from crossing their picket line. At the very last moment, George stopped the police from carrying out any bloodshed — a move that left his right-hand man, Richard Clay (Patrick Page), seething. Spector tells TV Insider that while the union has won this battle, there will be more to this war in a potential third season. And George’s humane decision in Episode 6 may cause an irreparable rift between him and Richard, similar to a real-life robber baron and his No. 2 from the same era. “Obviously these [union] issues aren’t going anywhere, but I would expect we would probably ...

An anguished update of, and response to, Ousmane Sembène’s 1965 anti-colonialist classic Black Girl, writer-director Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny grapples with the psychic pain of cultural alienation and familial disconnection. Though it contains elements of supernatural horror—including trickster spiders and murderous mermaids—it’s at heart a deeply felt immigration story, one that finds hope not in the empty promises of the American dream but in the strength and resilience of oppressed peoples.
The film opens on Aisha’s (Anna Diop) first day of work at the luxe Manhattan apartment of a businesswoman, Amy (Michelle Monaghan), who’s hired her to care for her young daughter, Rose (Rose Decker). Aisha, a teacher in her native Senegal, has no trouble caring for the girl, helping her with her French lessons and making food that she’ll actually eat, but she does have issues with Amy, whose festering anxieties make her...

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.
“American Horror Story’s” Taissa Farmiga plays a supporting role with room for growth: Gladys Russell,...

A gasp went around the world when viewers learned that Marian (Louisa Jacobsen) has been teaching children watercolors in “The Gilded Age” Season 2, Episode 1.
Less of a gasp and more of a chuckle, really, as “The Gilded Age” did what it arguably does best, delivering an extremely minor narrative development with the intensity of something much more significant. The show is filled with such petty inconveniences, as well as actual serious developments, all of it sold to full effect by the cast and setting. Teaching watercolor probably was a big deal for a high-society unmarried woman in the 19th-century, but it’s exacerbated on “The Gilded Age” by Aunt Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) reaction. Truly, watching characters on the show react to everything from the wrong napkin to a secret child is one of the joys of watching this series.
To get some perspective, IndieWire picked a handful of major plot...
