“Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively
The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.
Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.
“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.
The ensemble also features Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark,...

Exclusive: Johnny Galecki is developing a ’90s workplace comedy for CBS with Will & Grace exec producer John Quaintance.
Half-hour multi-cam project Aok, which comes from Warner Bros. Television, is set at an underdog Internet company in pre-AOL 1991, about a group of young and mostly idealistic entrepreneurs who work together, hang out together, and fall in and out of love with each other, all while trying to change their world, and holding up a mirror to ours.
“This specific period of time is personal to many, including all of us involved so it’s important to make the show feel as authentic as possible,” Galecki told Deadline. “We are excited to reimagine the 90’s sitcom through a modern lens as John has created something truly special. We hope to surprise people in a familiar place with characters you will fall in love with.”

We can't believe it's been 20 years since Will and Grace first, uh, graced us with its presence. And the funny thing is, neither can the rest of the cast. In September, I was lucky enough to visit the set of the exciting reboot that returned full force last year, delivering the same ridiculous, razor-sharp hilarity we fell in love with during the initial run. "Time is a funny thing," Sean Hayes said during an interview on set that day. He's been nailing it as the iconic Jack McFarland for the show's entire run. "I mean, at the same time, it feels 20 years and two weeks at the same exact same time. So I'm lucky to be here. I'm lucky for the gig. I'm very fortunate to have been given this role of a lifetime."

Director: Anne Fletcher; Screenwriter: David Feeney, John Quaintance; Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Sofía Vergara, Matthew Del Negro, Michael Mosley, Robert Kazinsky; Running time: 87 mins; Certificate: 12A
Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are on the lam in Hot Pursuit, an oestrogen-fuelled odd couple comedy that runs out of steam very early on. Director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses, The Guilt Trip) drags it out with one or two jokes that revolve around the height difference and the fact that both women talk kinda funny. That's a shame because the chemistry between the two is fairly good, and perhaps could have caught fire with better material.
Witherspoon gamely offers herself as the unsexy one, a neurotic by-the-book cop in sensible shoes who is tasked with hauling state's witness, Daniella Riva (played in typical hypersexual style by Vergara) across Texas - along with her trunkful of designer heels. Riva is set to testify against a Colombian...

We live in an age where I unfortunately have to preface this article by saying no, these are not sexist statements. A movie starring two female leads (Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara) who were directed by a female (Anne Fletcher) in a movie written by two men (John Quaintance, David Feeney) has nothing to do with what I’m concerned about. Also, if you think I shouldn’t judge a movie by its trailer and TV spots alone. Watch this:
I read a post someone had written the other day about how they want this movie to do well because we need more female comedies, female action comedies, female buddy movies and whatever other genres that are great for the female sex to have because men have them apparently. Side note: most of those movies starring men are garbage. Let’s not think that going to see these movies starring women...

Chicago – I get it. The old fashioned buddy movie, except with the twist of the femme-flavor-of-the-moment Sofia Vergara and runty Reese Witherspoon. It practically writes itself. In fact, that might be the only legitimate excuse for the mess that is “Hot Pursuit” – it wrote itself.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
With a title so lazy it should come with its own hammock, “Hot Pursuit” recycles every plot point and joke stylings from every buddy picture ever made. What could have been an interesting twist – Sofia Vergara has established herself as a funny character on TV’s “Modern Family” – turns into a shriek fest with Vergara doing most of the unfunny shrieking, with a philosophy of “If we say the jokes louder maybe they’ll be funny…” Reese Witherspoon, who is no slouch when it comes to doing comedy (Her Tracy Flick role in “Election” is one of the funniest characters of the past 20 years), seems lost as well,...

Any movie that causes you to roll your eyes more often than it induces an audible laugh is generally considered a failure, especially if said movie is a comedy. Hot Pursuit, an action-comedy portioned like a mild rye and cola, does not lack for idiotic moments early on, like when our born and raised Texan protagonist can’t recognize a longhorn tattoo. In fact, it only gets dumber the longer it goes, forgoing any legwork that explains how certain characters arrive in situations, and why it is those situations escalate to 11 without a moment’s hesitation.
At one point, stars Reese Witherspoon and Sophia Vergara avoid a police roadblock by getting under a rug and donning decoy antlers, so as to pass themselves off as a deer, Halloween horse-style. There’s also an extended bit where the stars pretend to be lovers, and share an awkward attempted-makeout session to distract a gun-totting redneck.

“Hot Pursuit” has earned the distinction of being the only film to make me amused at the prospect of “raccoon herpes.” The phrase in itself isn’t entirely unfunny (just say it to yourself), but what made me laugh out loud was Reese Witherspoon’s commitment to saying it deadpan (try doing that). She and costar Sofia Vergara take a subpar script from TV writers David Feeney and John Quaintance and run with it, showing their comedic prowess and turning cinematic lemons into Mike’s Hard Lemonade. It’s not tasty, but it gets the job done. Similar to director Anne Fletcher’s “The Proposal,” “Hot Pursuit” gets by on the charm and chemistry of its leads. This is an unsubtle, loud and not particularly bright comedy, but that’s not to say that it isn’t funny. Your head will hurt from the stupidity present throughout its 87 minutes, but...

Anne Fletcher has had an admirably diverse career, and as a director, she's proven herself to be at least somewhat commercially adept. "Step Up" inspired a slew of sequels, "The Proposal" was one of the biggest of Sandra Bullock's hits, and now she's back with what looks like a big easy summer comedy hit, "Hot Pursuit." It would be a lot easier to give the film a soft pass if it wasn't so aggressively lazy. I get it. Formula is easy, and there are plenty of films that exist largely to play directly to expectations. Not every film has to be some radical reinvention of the form. A movie like "Hot Pursuit" is incredibly easy for the people who are giving out the greenlights to understand. "Two stars, on the road, mistaken for bad guys, lots of jokes." If you strike gold with that basic formula, you get "Midnight Run.

Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon are giving the road trip subgenre a try with “Hot Pursuit,” coming to theaters May 8. The film, directed by Anne Fletcher and written by David Feeney, John Quaintance, Dana Fox and Katherine Silberman, puts a different twist on the subgenre by including a decent amount of danger and shootouts. Witherspoon plays a cop who is tasked with protecting Vergara’s character, the widow of a drug boss. Both of them have to make it through Texas while keeping their lives intact as they escape from gunmen and cops that have turned to the dark side. One of Warner Bros.’ big summer comedies packs the weight of two major headliners: Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. While the former did scoop up an Oscar a while back, she’s remained relatively low on the radar in the aftermath of her glorious win. The latter, however, has established herself as one of the highlights of ABC’s mockumentary comedy Modern Family. Put the pair together and what do you get? This year’s female buddy comedy, Hot Pursuit.
Previously titled Don’t Mess With Texas, the film might have swapped out its name, but the story remains the same. "I'm totally crushing it as a dude." Following the first mildly amusing trailer for Hot Pursuit, our friends from across the pond have just gotten a new trailer for the comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara in what's basically their own version of Midnight Run meets The Heat. There's a bunch more new footage in this UK trailer that we didn't see in the Us trailer, including new stuff with comedian Jim Gaffigan. Plus, there's a scene where Witherspoon has to dress up like a man, and ends up looking like Justin Bieber. I feel like this just might be a little too silly, but it doesn't look downright terrible. Warner Bros. has unleashed the first trailer for female buddy movie, Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. In the pic, the pair appear as an unlikely duo who team up to escape a motley crew of cops and mobsters. Maintaining the comedic tradition of opposites attract, Witherspoon plays a rigid cop who sticks to the rules with Vergara alongside her as a vivacious gangster’s widow.
The pair become attached at the hip when big-time drug boss Cortez is killed and Vergara’s widow is ordered to appear at his murder trial. Enter her protective law enforcer – tasked with escorting her cross-country – and they are soon on the run from a myriad of assorted baddies out to prevent them reaching their destination.

"We have been set up, shot at and hunted down." If you watched The Heat and thought to yourself, "Hey, I wish this was more like Midnight Run," then we have some good news for you. Hot Pursuit stars Reese Witherspoon as a feisty, uptight police officer tasked with escorting the widow/potential witness (Sofia Vergara) in an important investigation of a drug lord. But of course, shit goes down, and the two are forced to go on the run. Witherspoon and Vergara seem like a fun enough mismatched pair, but the comedy is a little broad, though I do like the bit about the news messing up their height and age respectively. Watch! For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.

Having just sat through the very strange Machete Kills, I can honestly say that I’ll never look at Sofia Vergara the same way again. As Gloria on Modern Family, she’s already proven that she can be funny; as probably the most entertaining secondary character in Machete Kills, she’s proven that she can be lewd. But as a co-star in an comedy set to premiere in the already overloaded Summer of 2015? I’m not so sure.
MGM and New Line are banking on the dual threats of Vergara and Reese Witherspoon to be able to stand up against the likes of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World without embarrassing themselves too much. The two actresses have been cast opposite each other in an untitled buddy comedy set to premiere in 2015. MGM, New Line and Warner Bros. will produce a comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, the companies said Thursday. Scheduled to open in theaters May 8 of next year, the movie will enter production in New Orleans this month. Witherspoon plays an uptight cop charged with protecting the sexy widow (Vergara) of a drug kingpin. Universal acquired John Quaintance and David Feeney's spec script last summer when it was called “Don't Mess with Texas.” MGM picked it up in February after Universal put it in turnaround. MGM allied with Warner Bros. and New Line for distribution, forming the same trio.

Deadline is reporting that Anne Fletcher, director of The Proposal and The Guilt Trip, will helm a new film titled Don’t Mess With Texas, which Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara have now signed on to headline. The script comes from David Feeney and John Quaintance and is being described in the same vein as Midnight Run. Witherspoon will play a police officer while Vergara will be a prisoner, with the two teaming up to go on the run together.
Originally set up at Universal, the film is now at MGM and apparently it’s all coming together very quickly. It’s a good thing too, because with female led comedies like The Heat and Bridesmaids doing excellent at the box office, it seems like Don’t Mess With Texas has the chance to do some respectable business as well. I can definitely see moviegoers just eating this one up,...

Deadline has word that Fletcher is currently in talks to direct Don't Mess with Texas, a new project at MGM from writers David Feeney & John Quaintance ("New Girl"). In addition, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are in talks to star in the film which is described as being in the same vein as Midnight Run with Witherspoon taking the lead as a police officer and Vergara playing a prisoner. Both actresses have been circling the project for awhile, but with Vegara's hiatus this summer from "Modern Family" coming up, the deals are coming together very quickly. Exclusive: Anne Fletcher is in talks to direct Don’t Mess With Texas, a female-driven Midnight Run-style comedy that stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. MGM is fully financing the David Feeney & John Quaintance-scripted action comedy. Witherspoon will play a police officer and Vergara a prisoner forced to go on the run together. Both Witherspoon and Vergara have circled this project for some time, but these deals are coming together quickly so that the film can be shot during Vergara’s hiatus from the ABC hit Modern Family this spring. The comedy was originally bought by Universal but it shook loose and MGM put it together. The film is being produced by Witherspoon and Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea, and Dana Fox. Fletcher, whose comedy credits include 27 Dresses and The Proposal, last directed The Guilt Trip. She’s repped by UTA, and both actresses are repped by CAA.

The big Hollywood studios clearly think that John Quaintance and David Feeney’s comedy script Don’t Mess With Texas has that certain something, because they’ve all been part of a bidding war to secure the rights. In what sounds like a match made in Hollywood casting heaven, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are set to team up on the just-announced comedy "Don't Mess With Texas."
Deadline.com reports that the two funny ladies will portray a cop and a prisoner on the run from the law. There's no word yet on which actress will portray which character -- will Vergara's dominating presence lend itself to the cop role, or will Witherspoon play mother hen to Vergara's presumably silly prisoner character?
The movie finds Witherspoon returning to her Southern roots, as the actress was born in New Orleans and led the charge in 2002's popular "Sweet Home Alabama." While Vergara has expanded her résumé with movie roles in recent years, this could become her most high-profile effort to date.

Even by the low standards of the genre it represents, this female teen comedy represents a new nadir.
Directed by Martha Coolidge, falling a long way from the similarly themed "Valley Girl" and co-starring sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff in their first screen pairing, "Material Girls" is the sort of witless, cynical exercise that future generations will point to as example of our society's vapidity. Having opened Friday without press screenings, naturally, the film will reach a certain percentage of its target audience, though anyone older than 16 or with Y chromosomes won't bother.
The plot, for those who care, revolves around spoiled rich siblings Ava (Haylie) and Tanzie (Hilary), who are the "faces" of their late father's cosmetics company.
Other than their modeling duties, the girls are content to spend their time instant messaging, talking on their cell phones and pampering themselves in every conceivable way.
But they are forced to abandon their complacency when the company is accused of disfiguring its customers. Attempting to prevent the business from falling into the hands of an archrival (Anjelica Huston, the latest of many Oscar winners who should be forced to return her statue for appearing in projects like this), the girls -- inspired by a glimpse of "Erin Brockovich" on television -- spring into investigative action.
While such films as "Legally Blonde" and "Clueless" have mined rich merriment from the travails of spoiled brats, "Material Girls" isn't in their league, let alone the same ballpark. Indeed, the lead characters, who whine about having gone "from Tiffany to Target in one single night" and plaintively ask, "Where's a spa when you need one?" are two of the most annoying figures seen onscreen in recent years.
Huston somehow manages to maintain her dignity, and Brent Spiner livens things up a little bit as an unctuous exec. Lukas Haas displays a nice understated quality as a love interest, while such performers as Maria Conchito Alonso, Obba Babatunde and Faith Prince are utterly wasted.
As for the Duff sisters, well, their work here only inspires hope that their 15-minute clock has started ticking.

Alice Hoffman and Hollywood haven't traditionally made a great fit if the screen adaptations of her novels "Practical Magic" and "The River King" (which went directly to video) are of any indication.
But things are looking up with the arrival of "Aquamarine", a bright and breezy tween fantasy romantic comedy that coasts along on its charming performances and the light comedic touch of first-time feature director Elizabeth Allen.
Playing like "Splash" in a training bra, this mermaid-out-of-water story should perform swimmingly with its target audience of young females, who will no doubt be lured by its popular teenage leads Emma Roberts, star of Nickelodeon's "Unfabulous", and pop singer JoJo, aka Joanna Levesque.
Roberts and Levesque respectively play Claire and Hailey, best friends spending what likely will be their last summer vacation together, what with Claire moving to Australia with her marine biologist mother.
So far they've been whiling away their days soaking up the sun at the quaint Florida beach club where Claire lives with her grandparents and pining after the hunky lifeguard, Raymond (Jake McDorman), but as fate would have it, a violent storm has dumped an honest-to-goodness mermaid (Sara Paxton) in the Capri Beach Club pool.
Having swam away from home to duck an arranged marriage, Aquamarine is determined to prove to her father that true love actually exists, and she's got three days to make a guy fall in love with her or it's back in the dip.
Naturally, she also has her eye on Raymond, but Claire and Hailey are willing to help her get her land-legs in exchange for granting them one very special mermaid wish.
In adapting the Hoffman material, screenwriters John Quaintance ("Material Girls") and Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On") do a nice job of putting across the story's themes of friendship and individuality without going all meaningful and stuff.
Director Allen keeps the buoyant tone aloft at least until the third act, which gets a bit soggy in places, but she's obviously got a terrific rapport with her young actors.
While Roberts and Levesque make for affably authentic 13-year-olds, Paxton, who plays the title character in the NBC family comedy "Darcy's Wild Life", has an infectious, nutty energy as the wide-eyed Aquamarine that ensures the laughs keep flowing at an agreeable pace.
Production values for this budget-minded enterprise (in which the role of Florida was played by Australia) are cheerfully efficient, though many of the required visual effects really pay the price for those all-too-apparent cost-cutting measures.
