"The Last Starfighter" firmly established itself as part of the canon of great '80s science-fiction and fantasy films upon its release in 1984. Directed by Nick Castle (who initially found fame playing Michael Meyers in John Carpenter's "Halloween" in 1978), it tells the tale of Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), a young high schooler from a trailer park who aces an arcade game and sets the high score. Little does he know, however, that this arcade game was really a test of his abilities as an actual starfighter, which leads to him being recruited into the Star League to fight against an intergalactic threat.
When Alex realizes that he's been drafted into a real war, he declines his chance to be a hero and demands to be taken back to Earth. Fortunately, this turns out to be a good thing for the galaxy at large, as an enemy armada soon after...

He's considered one of the greatest actors of our time, yet even Denzel Washington has issues with some of his most rewatchable performances -- including one that earned him an Oscar. According to "The Book of Eli" writer Gary Whitta, Washington confessed that in the late 2000s, he felt somewhat annoyed by the final act of "Training Day," particularly the now-iconic speech in which he declared how very little s*** King Kong had on his character, Alonzo Harris.
During an appearance on "Kinda Funny Gamescast," Whitta recounted the surreal conversation of picking the best Denzel Washington films with Washington himself. While Whitta's top choice was "Man on Fire", "The Book of Eli" directors, the Hughes Brothers, who were also present, ranked "Training Day" at the top of their list. As Whitta recounted it:

Jake Gyllenhaal In Talks To Lead M. Night Shyamalan & Nicholas Sparks Supernatural Romantic Thriller

Here's one of those bits of movie news that has you leaning further and further forward the more you read Deadline are reporting that Nightcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal is being lined up to lead M. Night Shyamalan's next movie. And as if that isn't enough to already grab our collective attention, said film is reportedly an original supernatural romantic thriller, co-created by Shyamalan alongside The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks.
Now, you might've picked up on the fact that we say this superrommer (as nobody will ever call it) has been co-created by Shyamalan and Sparks as opposed to co-written by, but that's not an error. Rather, in a similar vein to Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke's parallel, multimedia collaboration on 2001: A Space Odyssey, the filmmaker and author have conceived this creative project together, but will be writing the story in their preferred mediums separately. Both versions...

Denzel Washington is having a huge career year, which is deserved after his decades of work in the industry. Ridley Scott's historical epic Gladiator II, in which Washington played Macrinus, became the highest-grossing movie in the actor's career. He was nominated for both a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe award for his work in the film, and is expected to get an Oscar nomination next month. Awards have oft recognized Washington's work as such, as he has won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor, for Glory and Training Day, respectively.
That said, not all of Washington's work has been met with such overwhelming praise. Though he has had some notably critically acclaimed work, the actor's Rotten Tomatoes scores have also struggled at points. This is evidenced by movies such as Heart Condition, John Q, and The Bone Collector, all of which had Rotten Tomatoes scores...

Mad Max is one of the most influential action movies of all time, and in the years that followed its release, the series has only continued to grow in importance and popularity. George Miller’s cinematic dystopia is still thriving today, and while Furiosa struggled at the box office, there’s still plenty of room in today’s climate for blood-soaked, high-octane thrillers that take place in futures quite unlike our present.
Made on a low budget, Mad Max was a huge success because it was totally unlike anything that audiences had been exposed to before: it was dystopia, but not in the technological, sci-fi ways that films like Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey offered. Instead, the series presents the idea that our twisted future will be a return to the industrial revolution of the past, fixated on machines and automobiles that help us survive. It was a...

Star Wars fans shouldn't say goodbye to Rogue One character Jyn Erso just yet. Actor Felicity Jones recently hinted that her time in the Disney-owned sci-fi franchise is far from over.
Speaking with Screen Rant to promote her upcoming movie The Brutalist, Jones refused to believe that she'd never return to the Star Wars galaxy as Jyn Erso. "Never. We'll never say goodbye to her. She will live on, she'll live on," said Jones when asked whether audiences had seen the last of Jyn. "I mean, never say never. She's a pretty badass character. Maybe she could come back as a hologram or something, which is completely possible in the Star Wars universe."

A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.
According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.
Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

Call it a blue wave. A host of actors, directors, musicians, journalists and other prominent people are dumping X (formerly Twitter) and flocking to social media platform Bluesky.
In the past week, an increasing number of bold-faced names have announced that they plan to post less on X, or leave the platform altogether, citing myriad issues with the social media company, including far right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, crypto scams, bots and the political views of owner Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch who is a vocal supporter and financial backer of Donald Trump.
Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. Henry Cavill seems to be verse-jumping as he was recently seen in DC’s rival franchise, the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor had a small cameo as a Wolverine variant a.k.a The Cavillrine in Deadpool & Wolverine. This came after his exit as Superman from the Dceu after James Gunn took over and chose to go with a new actor instead.
Cavill has headlined The Witcher, starred in Mission Impossible: Fallout, and has played Sherlock Holmes, making him a franchise-favorite actor. While the James Bond role seems to be elusive to him, the actor had expressed interest in being a part of another legendary franchise, provided a new film met his expectations.

In a surprise to no one, the Rey film, which disappeared after being pushed back for “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” has hit yet another setback. This time, the new writer, who Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy got to replace the other two writers they fired, has also left the film.
Steven Knight was brought in March 2023 to replace the original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Lindelof has said publically that he was asked to leave Star Wars.
This isn’t even the first time this has happened. Kathleen Kennedy has a trail of people who either quit or were fired for “creative differences.”
There is a list of 18 from 2022, which has increased since then! Some of the people removed include,
Michael Arndt, Gary Whitta, Gareth Edwards, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Colin Trevorrow, Josh Trank, Stephen Daldry, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Stephen Schiff, J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens, Stuart Beattie,...

A live-action adaptation of Akira has been stuck in development hell for years, but a perfect live-action movie version of Akira already happened in an unofficial capacity over a decade ago. Hollywood has been trying to get a live-action Akira movie off the ground since Sony Pictures acquired the rights to the original manga in the 1990s. Over the years, everyone from Blade director Stephen Norrington to Rogue One writer Gary Whitta has been attached to the live-action Akira project. Jordan Peele and George Miller both turned down the chance to direct an Akira remake.
The live-action Akira movie came closer to becoming a reality than ever when Taika Waititi signed on to direct it as his follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok. He co-wrote the script with Michael Golamco, with a release date set for May 21, 2021. However, when Waititi moved on to Thor: Love and Thunder and then to his current project,...

The premise of Batman: Fortress by Gary Whitta, Darick Robertson, Diego Rodriguez, and Simon Bowland seems very simple at first: with the Earth trapped in a global blackout due to a mysterious signal, Batman and the remaining Justice League members struggle to find the cause whilst power remains down. However, the series soon diverged from the crisis at hand, ignoring the larger issues the blackout likely caused.
Batman: Fortress, a limited series that ran in 2022, focused on the Earths global blackout after an unidentified alien vessel landed in the atmosphere. Looking back, instead of the story Batman: Fortress told about Batmans search for a missing Superman, it could have been the perfect chance for a pandemic story about the role of responsibility in a wounded society.
The plot of the comic sees Batman develop an unlikely team after the Justice Leagues quick defeat against the aliens hostile vessel. The ad-hoc...

The 2010 post-apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli is finally returning, but this time it will be on the small screen in the form of a prequel series. The aforementioned 2010's cult classic starred Denzel Washington as the mysterious Eli, a blind man who traverses the apocalyptic wasteland as the sole inheritor of humanity's last hope. With its gritty landscapes and exciting action, The Book of Eli exemplified the sort of action films that Hollywood was producing at the end of the aughts.

Disney is being sued for using CGI to resurrect Peter Cushing for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The actor, who played imperial commander Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars: A New Hope, died in 1994.

Pure Fiction: The Black List Offers New Novelists A New Avenue To Publication, TV & Film Adaptations

Over three months before the 20th edition of The Black List hits inboxes all over town, the Franklin Leonard founded platform is broadening its horizon into novels.
“The Black List’s core mission has always been discovering, supporting, and amplifying exceptional writing–providing it with the platform and visibility that it deserves based on its merit,” said Leonard today of the move into fiction with manuscript submissions and connections to the world of adaptation for TV and film. “Expanding into fiction is a natural progression.
“Right now, there are brilliant writers around the world who don’t have access to high-quality, accountable feedback, and whose work goes unseen for reasons entirely unrelated to how good it is,” the Black List CEO adds. “That’s a massive market failure, and it changes today. This M. Night Shyamalan article contains spoilers.
You are currently in the middle of the Shyamalanaissance, which is not some kind of B-movie supernatural occurrence, but the return of M. Night Shyamalan to the forefront of filmmaking. After a few big budget flops, this cult-favorite director went back to his low-budget roots for the 2015 found-footage film The Visit, an excellent thriller with a twist that will undoubtedly remind movie viewers of his earlier thriller masterpieces, such as The Sixth Sense and Signs. Since then, Shyamalan has released the surprising slasher film Split and the Unbreakable superhero sequel, Glass, twisty horrors based on books Knock at the Cabin and Old, as well as serial killer thriller Trap.
Not many directors boast as many memorable screen moments as Shyamalan and fewer still continue to put out such consistently enjoyable work after so many years of captivating audiences. Some might say that The Sixth Sense was peak Shyamalan,...

This article contains light spoilers for Trap.
It’s no spoiler to say that M. Night Shyamalan makes a cameo appearance in his latest movie Trap. After all, Shyamalan shows up in all of his movies, a tribute to his hero Alfred Hitchcock. But as much as he wants to follow in the footsteps of the master of suspense, Shyamalan has the heart of an ’80s schlockmeister.
For evidence, look no further than Trap. Yes, the film has a Hitchcock-worthy premise, in which suburban dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) finds the pop concert he’s attending with his pre-teen daughter interrupted by police hunting a serial killer called the Butcher. The problem? Cooper is the Butcher, which audiences learn when he checks in on one of his victims via remote camera.

M. Night Shyamalan won't defend The Last Airbender and After Earth because they weren't his original ideas. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story almost gave fans a different ending, but at some point, changes had to happen to deliver the best treatment of the story. The creative team behind the film always intended to end the film with a bang, and that’s to kill off the entire Rebel team.
Felicity Jones in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
In the early days of drafting the script, the writers had a different idea where they concocted an alternate narrative. However, they seemed to fear that Disney might not like it because it might be too dark and gruesome.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit. However, back when I was a teenager, my parents showed up one night with an unusually cool-looking DVD of a movie that had been recommended to them by a church leader. Curious to see what new kind of evangelical propaganda my parents had rented this time, I proceeded to watch the film with them expecting a heavy-handed snoozefest.
To my surprise, I was a few minutes in when Denzel Washington proceeded to dismember a band of cannibal raiders when I realized that this was in fact a real movie. My mom was horrified by the flick’s extreme violence and dark subject matter, but I instantly became a fan of the Hughes Brothers’ faith-based 2010 thriller, The Book of Eli. Regardless of whether it's an action flick or a horror movie, sacrifices will always elevate the dramatic charge of a story. There's no better way to illustrate a character's redemption than with their willingness to give their life to save others. However, sacrifices aren't always related to brave causes: quite often, they are more about a character coming to terms with their own mortality rather than a touching decision to save other people's lives.
In A Quiet Place, Lee Abbott yells at the top of his lungs to prevent creatures that hunt by sound from preying on his family. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day, T-800, a cyborg, gives his life so humanity can continue to fight for the right causes. These are all unforgettable sacrifices in movies, but there are plenty of underrated choices that stand out as the most impactful moments of these stories.

A new "Jurassic World" movie on the way, and it's happening in a hurry. In the span of just a month, we learned that original "Jurassic Park" writer David Koepp has returned to the franchise to pen this mysterious new entry, Universal Pictures is planning to release the film next summer, and they are looking to begin filming in just a few months. Given that we only learned about the movie's existence several weeks ago, it's all pretty surprising. So, who will be shepherding this project through production? None other than Gareth Edwards.
We recently learned that the filmmaker behind franchise films such as 2014's "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will occupy the director's chair. The Book of Eli's new prequel show breaks career trends for Denzel Washington, being the first prequel to a movie he starred in. Denzel Washington's movies have rarely launched franchises, making The Book of Eli's prequel show a unique endeavor. The show marks the first time Denzel Washington has been recast in a franchise, with John Boyega taking over the lead role, adding pressure to Boyega's performance.
The Book of Eli's new prequel show breaks two major career trends for Denzel Washington. The 2010 action movie The Book of Eli starred Denzel Washington as a blind warrior protecting the Bible in the apocalypse. It was a surprise success, making $157 million at the box office, which typically would leave Hollywood studios to begin thinking of ways to continue the franchise. ‘Star Wars’ actor John Boyega has joined the cast of ‘The Book of Eli,’ the TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film which starred Denzel Washington.
Boyega will take on the role of the younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, which comes from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce.
Details of the plot are being kept under wraps but it is rumoured to be set 30 years prior to the events in the film, which would put it around the time of the nuclear event or its immediate aftermath.

The movie follows Eli (Washington), a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation, 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide.

Denzel Washington’s 2010 action thriller The Book Of Eli is heading to the small screen, with John Boyega take the lead as a younger Denzel.
Much like Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington has become something of an action hero in the latter stages of his career. While he has previously appeared in films like Ricochet and Crimson Tide, it wasn’t until he played John Creasy in Tony Scott’s brutal 2004 revenge film Man On Fire that we really got to see him off some bad guys in a variety of inventive ways.
Since then of course, he has become synonymous with vigilante justice, dishing out karmic vengeance in three Equalizer films to date. But in 2010, he played a different kind of action hero in The Book Of Eli, a post apocalyptic thriller in which he plays a drifter intent on delivering a sacred book to safety in the West Coast of the United States.

Alright, who here saw John Boyega on a fast track to stardom after "The Force Awakens" and said something along the lines of, "Boy, he sure seems like the next Denzel Washington?" without knocking on wood first? Because that monkey's paw has started to curl something fierce and left us with the latest batch of franchise IP news -- one that'll excite the more innocent among us while leaving the rest slightly jaded and cynical. What a time to be alive, folks.
So, remember when the Hughes brothers teamed up with "Rogue One" writer Gary Whitta on a 2010 apocalyptic movie by the name of "The Book of Eli" and we all agreed that it was a pretty solid piece of original genre work with something meaningful on its mind? That might feel like more and more of a foreign concept these days, especially compared to the current state of original sci-fi.

John Boyega is set to play a younger version of Denzel Washington's apocalypse survivor in a prequel to The Book of Eli. Boyega will also executive produce the new series, which is currently being shopped to buyers. Deadline reports that Boyega is working alongside Gary Whitta, who wrote the original film, and Albert and Allen Hughes, the directing duo who helmed it. The prequel series will take place thirty years before the events of the 2010 film; it took place approximately thirty years after a nuclear catastrophe ravaged the Earth, so this series will likely take place in the immediate wake of it.

Director Nick Castle’s 1984 sci-fi film The Last Starfighter is one of the most revered cult classics of the 1980s, so it has been no surprise to hear that the film’s screenwriter Jonathan R. Betuel is eager to revive the property is some way. Eight years ago, it was announced that Betuel was working on a spin-off TV series called The Starfighter Chronicles, which would focus on alien law enforcement. That project has never made it into production. Five years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta revealed that he was working with Betuel on a reboot called The Last Starfighters. That one even got a sizzle reel, but still didn’t make it into production. Now, during an interview with Gizmodo, actor Wyatt Russell revealed that he’d love to see a remake of The Last Starfighter.

Albert Hughes reveals the struggles faced during the production of the live-action Akira movie, including the studio's fear and hesitation to make the film. If Lucasfilm had developed a sequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, its best Disney-era project never would have been produced. Rogue One was the first of a planned series of standalone anthology movies and became wildly lucrative during its theatrical run, grossing over $1 billion at the box office. As a result of this success, many believed Lucasfilm would immediately begin planning a Rogue One sequel, even though all the film’s core cast had died due to the events of the movie, and the story seamlessly continued in the original Star Wars trilogy. The writers of Rogue One did, however, have some compelling ideas for a thematic sequel show that never came to be.

Gotham City is full of some of the worst criminals comic books have ever seen, and many of them will never give up crime. In a surprising twist, the Joker actually has no problem giving up a life of crime at a moments notice.
Many fans might think that the Joker is compelled to commit crimes and that causing chaos and death is ingrained inside of him — but that doesn't seem to actually be the case. Readers can see this firsthand in "Big Bad Problems" by Matthew Rosenberg, Francesco Francavilla, and Tom Napolitano from The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5. This out-of-continuity short story shows Joker desperately trying to win over Giganta, but the giant woman is nothing but disgusted by him.

For many Star Wars fans, it's not uncommon knowledge that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had closer ties to the Jedi Order in one of its original drafts. Rogue One stars Felicity Jones as the main character, Jyn Erso, and Diego Luna as Rebel Captain Cassian Andor. The film was released on December 16, 2016, and takes place directly before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. It was the first stand-alone Star Wars feature-length film -- with the main characters having zero direct connections to the core cast of the original trilogy or the prequels. The film also made stylistic deviances from other Star Wars films, such as opting out of the trademark opening narrative crawl and not utilizing the traditional screen wipes during scene transitions.
Also missing from Rogue One was any main character with ties to the Jedi, but it wasn't always this way.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power composer Bear McCreary wrote, “I’m shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Ray Stevenson. I was honored to write him a theme for his mesmerizingly unforgettable Blackbeard on #BlackSails. What a talent! #Rip“

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is perhaps the most maddening of Disney’s Star Wars films.
There’s so much potential that made it onto the screen, and also so much that stumbles along the way. The film is gorgeously shot by Dune cinematographer Greig Fraser. The ending is emotional and shocking. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his robot sidekick K-2So (Alan Tudyk) remain enduring. Yet the film is burdened by a soggy midsection and a listless lead character in Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), among other issues (or perhaps not — debating what, exactly, is right and wrong with Rogue One is part of its ongoing fandom legacy).
Star Wars fans have long wondered if perhaps a better edit might someday be released given how much footage was shot for the film that did not make it into the final cut. The production famously was directed by Gareth Edwards,...

After Earth, despite being a futuristic movie, was filmed mostly on location in the United States and parts of Central America. The 2013 Hollywood blockbuster was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and co-written by him and Gary Whitta. After Earth was the first film to star Will Smith and his son, a young Jaden Smith, since 2007's The Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith had planned sequels for After Earth, which did not come to fruition for many reasons, including the original movie's unfavorable reviews.
The story was partly developed by Will Smith and follows his character Cypher Raige and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) stranded on a futuristic Earth following a crash landing. After Earth takes place 1000 years in the future where Earth has become inhabitable and humanity has moved to another planet called Nova Prime. The sci-fi film features several expansive landscapes of an abandoned Earth as Kitai traverses dangerous...
