"If we want to help win the war, this is how we're gonna do it." What a killer line of dialogue. Maverick Film & Complex Corp have unveiled the official trailer for a cheap and cheesy World War II action thriller titled Murder Company, based on actual events that are rumored to have really happened. It's set for a VOD launch in July this summer, directed by another junk B-movie filmmakers who churns out nothing but bad movies. In the midst of 1944's D-Day invasion, a group of US soldiers are given orders to smuggle a member of the French resistance behind enemy lines to assassinate a high-value Nazi target. Their mission has never been officially acknowledged, and there is no record the unit ever existed. But those who were there gave it a name of its own: Murder Company. The film stars William Moseley, Pooch Hall, Gilles Marini, Joe Anderson,...

Maverick Film and Complex Corp have acquired “Murder Company,” an action film set during World War II. The film will be released in theaters, on demand and digital on July 5.
“Murder Company” was written by Jesse Mittelstadt (“Altitude”) and directed by Shane Dax Taylor (“The Best Man”). The film stars William Moseley, who appeared in “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “The Royals,” as well as Pooch Hall (“Ray Donovan”) Gilles Marini (“Sex in the City”) and Joe Anderson (“Hercules”). Kelsey Grammer, who recently revived “Frasier,” rounds out the ensemble.
“We’re very excited to present ‘Murder Company’ to audiences,” said Richard Switzer, president of Maverick Film. “The film is a non-stop thrill ride with a very authentic feel to it, having shot fully in Europe.”

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

There was no need to worry that Reba McEntire might mess up or bring any unnecessary flourishes to “The Star-Spangled Banner” when she performed the National Anthem prior to the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Unlike anyone else who’d done it prior to the Bowl or any other major NFL game in recent memory, she brought a full half-century’s experience of singing the anthem to the occasion.
The year 2024 marks a special anniversary for the country superstar and her association with the song: She is often said to have been “discovered” 50 years ago when she sang it at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in her home state of Oklahoma, when she was just 19.
McEntire’s latest rendition of the anthem was more fully orchestrated than some other recent versions — or even her own past readings — have been, with a pre-recorded horn section sending the song toward a big climax.

There’s a solid chance this month’s edition of “Revenge of the Remakes” ends up as one of my favorite column entries. George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies inspire an exceptional case study about the peaceful coexistence between remakes and originals. Both filmmakers choose unique perspectives when dooming small-town America, even though the early 1970s and dawning 2010s validate eerily similar conspiracy paranoias. Stacking these Trixie-toxin thrillers back-to-back validates why remakes aren’t here to piss all over your safe, swaddling nostalgia blankets. Remakes aren’t the enemy — they’re a golden opportunity.
Romero’s The Crazies could only accomplish so much as a commentary against bureaucratic incompetence given the $270K budget. It benefits from a facelift, much like how Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes reaches its full potential as a bloodthirsty 2000s revamp. That’s not a shot at legends...

When “Mrs. Davis” director and executive producer Owen Harris read the pilot script for the Peacock limited series, he had one response. “I sent an email straight back to my agent saying, ‘What the f–k have I just read?’” Harris tells Gold Derby in our Making of “Mrs. Davis” video roundtable exclusive interview. “And then I quickly followed it up with, ‘But I love it. It’s amazing. We have to do this.’ And I think that sort of everyone had a similar reaction.”
Co-created by Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez, “Mrs. Davis” is a show that defies easy classification. Broadly, it’s about a nun named Simone (Betty Gilpin) who is tasked by an artificial intelligence program called Mrs. Davis to find and destroy the Holy Grail in exchange for the elimination of Mrs. Davis itself. The twisty conceit – which includes Simone’s magician father (David Arquette), her...

The very premise of “Mrs. Davis” all but encouraged the Peacock show’s creative team to embrace their pop culture influences. Co-created by Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof, “Mrs. Davis” is about the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence algorithm and a nun named Simone (Betty Gilpin), who the computer programs tasks with its destruction by sending her on a quest to find the Holy Grail. “Algorithms love cliches,” Wiley (Jake McDorman), Simone’s ex – who happens to lead a group of male resistance fighters like he’s “Fight Club” figure Tyler Durden – says at one point.
“It’s such a pastiche,” “Mrs. Davis” cinematographer Joe Anderson tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “The show deals with cliches – like when you do a Google search, the very first topic that comes up. Some of the writing toys with that idea. So we kind of leaned into some of these kind of obvious references,...

In the finale of the 2012 television series The River, a character says what everyone else is thinking: “It’s never gonna let us go.” This foreboding last line is, of course, in reference to the show’s sinuous and uncanny namesake. From there the audience is left to wonder what happened to the crew of the Magus as they drifted toward imminent danger.
This wasn’t the first time a TV show visited the Amazon; a short-lived 1999 drama created by author Peter Benchley beat Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry’s series to the punch. However, The River was a mix of adventure and horror. In place of a plane crashing and the survivors struggling to survive their dilemma are characters who deliberately enter the unknown. Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.
“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.
In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Stop me if you've heard this one. A biotech company that also happens to be a devil-worshipping cult has been cloning famous historical figures and auctioning them off to wealthy bidders. The clones are still kids and in some cases babies, which means for a huge amount of money, someone can get their very own toddler Stravinsky or baby Michelangelo. Kind of like "Clone High," but evil.
But here's the thing: cloning these historical geniuses isn't the cult's endgame. They plan on stealing the Shroud of Turin and using the blood stains on the supposedly holy artifact to clone Jesus Christ himself. But wait, there's more. Not only does the cult want to clone Jesus — they want to use the clone baby as the host for Lucifer himself. Yes, Satan is real, and so are angels, and the battle between Heaven and Hell is about to come to Earth!

"Hell shall come to Earth." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the full trailer for a sci-fi horror film called The Devil Conspiracy, which is set to hit theaters in mid-January. They're hoping this one will be one of the big horror releases in January, since it's always that time of the year when not-that-great movies can end up becoming hits. The plot involves a biotech company creating a technique to clone the greatest minds and figures from history. However, the company is run by a cabal of Satanists whose ultimate goal is to resurrect Lucifer himself. They plan to do this by offering up Jesus once they've cloned him from a sample of his DNA found on his shroud. Let the religious battles ensue. The film stars Alice Orr-Ewing, Joe Doyle, Eveline Hall, Peter Mensah, Joe Anderson, Brian Caspe, and James Faulkner. This looks so hyper-stylized, with so many epic...

Jane Austen certainly wrote some plucky, sassy protagonists. Anne Elliot was not one of them. The first chapter of “Persuasion,” Austen’s final novel, describes Anne as having “an elegance of mind and sweetness of character.” Anne’s love interest, the dashing Captain Wentworth, later claims there is “no one so proper, so capable as Anne.”
The Anne illustrated in Austen’s novel sounds genteel and gracious. The Anne in Netflix’s “Persuasion,” the first straightforward film adaptation of the novel since 2007, is described similarly by her dearest friends. And yet, perhaps in an attempt to make her more relatable in our current resurgence of messy female characters, she also spends much of the film breaking the fourth wall and cracking wise.
Screenwriters Ron Bass (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”) and Alice Victoria Winslow (“Hot Spot”) have given one of Austen’s more demure heroines the “Fleabag” treatment. Luckily for them,...

England. 1665. The great plague has caused a frenzy of fear, distrust and death. Desperate and terrified, the population turns to superstition, the Catholic Church taking cruel advantage of the grim witch-hunting opportunities presented. Recently widowed Grace Haverstock is at her wit’s end when her landlord attempts to force her into paying debts with sexual favours. Her refusal means she must face horrific interrogations at the hands of Britain’s most ruthless Witchfinder General. But she is not alone. And her journey won’t end here without a reckoning.
I’m going to be honest, the name Neil Marshall doesn’t seem to carry the same kudos is once had, especially after many fans felt his Hellboy adaptation lacklustre. However I am in the opposite camp… I truly enjoyed...

Following the misfire of 2019’s “Hellboy” reboot, “The Descent” director Neil Marshall returns to his traditional horror roots with “The Reckoning,” an uneven melodrama about an innocent young widow accused of witchcraft during the Great Plague of London, 1665. Striving to be a rousing tale of female empowerment in the face of brutal patriarchy and religious extremism, “The Reckoning” has some powerful moments but relies too heavily on fantasy sequences to deliver scares, and its credibility is significantly compromised by the heroine consistently emerging from extreme torture sessions with barely a hair out of place or a smudge on her makeup. Dedicated horror hounds will be the main takers when this well-produced item hits U.S. theaters and VOD on February 5.

While Neil Marshall’s 1665 London-set, Great Plague drama The Reckoning has obvious allusions to our own present-day pandemic, Covid-19 wasn’t a factor in its creation being that filming occurred in 2019. The fear and paranoia that surround both eras are palpable, though, and the ways in which our current disease has been politicized beyond the point of human empathy does bear superficial similarity to the ways in which women were persecuted as witches against the backdrop that past sickness. Despite Marshall and co-writers Charlotte Kirk and Edward Evers-Swindell heavily researching the period to create a historically accurate piece depicting this tragedy’s two sides, their script actually resembles a different set of headlines altogether due to the circumstances surrounding the accusations leveled at Grace Haverstock’s (Kirk) lead.

"There's only one thing that can explain it - she made a pact with the devil!" Rlje Films has released an official trailer for The Reckoning, a new horror thriller from British filmmaker Neil Marshall. This first premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, and it also played in Germany's Fantasy Filmfest, now set for a VOD release starting in February. A young widow accused of being a witch defends herself against the clergy and patriarchy. It's described as a "gory revenge thriller in historical guise", starring Charlotte Kirk (who also co-wrote the script and executive produced) as a woman unjustly accused of being a witch who is placed in the custody of England's most ruthless witch-hunter. The cast also includes Joe Anderson, Steven Waddington, and Sean Pertwee. This trailer has tons of creepy footage, and Marshall definitely knows how to make a good horror film. This is worth a look.

Listen. I'm still as disappointed as you are by the fact that Neil Marshall's Hellboy was such a mess but I still like much of Marshall's work and I'm always up for a dark and dirty period piece and The Reckoning appears to be just that.
Co-written by Marshall, Edward Evers-Swindell and Charlotte Kirk, who also co-stars, the movie unfolds during the Great Plague. Kirk plays Grace Haverstock, a woman accused of being a witch after the death of her husband. She's placed under the custody of England's most ruthless witch hunter Judge Moorcroft (Sean Pertwee) and under his watchful eye suffers great torture and physical suffering as well as mental anguish, all while fighting off the Devil himself.
The Reckoning also stars Joe Anderson and Steven Waddington.

Whenever a flick debuts at a film festival and then takes a year to come out, people can suspect the worst. Well, I’m here to tell you that Our Friend is an exception to that. I saw the movie back when it was going by The Friend as its title, during its festival run, and it’s a very good film. Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson, and Jason Segel give top notch performances, to say the least. Now, as it prepares for a January release, a Trailer has debuted, featuring a quote from none other than yours truly! That was an honor, and it’s a pleasure to be quoted in such a strong work. Take a look at the Trailer below and be sure to keep an eye out for my citation! Here’s the description I wrote for the movie last year, when it was still called The Friend...

Mads Mikkelsen is making the press rounds in support of Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round,” which represents Denmark in the 2021 Oscar race, but “Hannibal” is always a topic of conversation for the 55-year-old actor. Netflix began streaming all three seasons of Bryan Fuller’s cult-classic serial-killer drama this summer, further boosting the series’ popularity and reigniting buzz over Fuller and his cast’s desire to make a fourth season. Mikkelsen told IndieWire this week that his wish list for “Hannibal” Season 4 includes bringing “Silence of the Lambs” serial killer Buffalo Bill into the narrative.
“I don’t think it’s a secret that if it does happen, we would love to go into ‘Silence of the Lambs,'” Mikkelsen said. “That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book. But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there.

England.

The Reckoning greets us with the image of a mass grave. It’s England in 1665, the Great Plague has plunged the country into fear, paranoia, and sickness. The cause of “the sickness,” as they call it, is unknown to them, but they must blame something. And like all who follow the Christian doctrine, they blame the Devil and those who represent him. Lucifer’s acolytes, in their mind, are witches. While witch trials during this time were beginning to decline, “Witch Finders” kept this murder of innocent women rampant. Writer-director Neil Marshall explores this dark time in history and a true tale of horrors in his new, epic film. An examination of the trauma and pain caused by these trials that the film estimates killed 500,000 women across continents.
The Reckoning begins in a very melodramatic fashion. A young widow and mother, Grace, is grieving her husband, Joseph (Joe Anderson). She...
