Filmax has acquired the Spanish and international rights to a psychological thriller about a woman in the middle of a marital crises who is stalked by an unknown entity on return to her hometown.
Called “Visitor,” the film is the directorial debut of Alberto Evangelio, a producer and director of shorts and branded content, as well as the 13-part Catalan TV series “Sunday Paella.”
Currently in post production, the producer-distributor’s latest pick up will be among the thrillers it is set to show buyers a glimpse of during the Pre-Cannes Screening.
The film stars Iria del Río, from Spanish riot police drama “Antidisturbios,” Miquel Fernández (“Adú”), Jan Cornet (“The Skin I Live In”) and Sandra Cervera, (“Old Bridge’s Secret”).
The feature was made through two fiction and commercials production companies: Beniwood Producciones – which Evangelio cofounded – and Madrid’s Chester Media Producciones as well as The Otherside Films and Barcelona-based Life&Pictures.

Slowly but surely, Rambo 5 is finally – finally – beginning to fall into place.
Omega Underground has today uncovered a series of audition tapes to prove that, yes, casting is now officially underway for Sylvester Stallone’s action sequel (codenamed Rambo: Last Blood), in which his beefed-up John Rambo will be coming up against the Mexican cartel.
He won’t be doing so alone, mind you, as the newly-uncovered synopsis indicates that Rambo will be currying favor from an unnamed member of the press as he seeks to dismantle the dangerous trafficking ring responsible for kidnapping his friend’s daughter. Imagine Taken… on steroids.
Rambo teams up with a journalist to track down and rescue a group of local girls that have been kidnapped by a Mexican sex trafficking ring, after trying to settle down to a quiet peaceful life stateside at the family ranch in Arizona after spending decades abroad.

Tasting Menu begins without offering much detail about its story or thematic effort, and it ends without ever showing its cards. It’s the story (sort of) of the last night at the world’s best restaurant, which is closing for uncertain reasons, and with the owner/chef’s future unknown. Said chef, the world-renowned Mar Vidal (Vicenta N’Dongo), thinks it’s time for a change, though the decision to close the restaurant has rocked the culinary world.
But, there is only a sideways sense in which the film can legitimately be said to have anything to do with this restaurant, this night, or this chef. The official synopsis only talks about Marc (Jan Cornet) and Rachel (Claudia Bassols), who happen to have a reservation that they made a year ago. Despite having split up several months ago, they decide they can’t miss the historic last night. It might be awkward,...

Finger Food: Gaul’s Latest Effort Staunchly Unappetizing
Spanish filmmaker Roger Gaul (known for his 2002 debut, the co-directed Smoking Room) returns with this Irish co-produced venture, Tasting Menu, its cast dictated primarily by geographic funding. Utilizing the banal workings of several intersecting storylines over the course of one evening, this petit bourgeois offering is as unabashedly pretentious as it is stilted, attempting to jackdaw cinematic magic via food porn and various romantic clichés. Several notable cast members are as poorly served as their lesser known counterparts, an ensemble that can’t ever emulsify as neatly as Javier Clavo’s screenplay so desperately wants it to.
Chef Mar (Vicenta N’Dongo) is a reluctant celebrity in her realm, owner of a highly successful restaurant that seats only thirty and is booked for months in advance. However, after finding herself in a creative rut, she decides to close the restaurant, much to...

So sloppy it can't even adequately follow through on cooking its various plot strands to completion, Tasting Menu concerns the dreary goings-on at the closing night of world-renowned chef Mar's (Vicenta N'dongo) seaside Barcelona restaurant.
There, a motley collection of guests engage in lifeless mini-dramas, from author Rachel's (Claudia Bassols) reunion with her ex-husband, Marc (Jan Cornet) — a meeting complicated by the surprise arrival of Rachel's obnoxious editor boyfriend, Danny (Timothy Gibbs) — to a widowed countess (Fionnula Flanagan) showing up with her husband's urn and involving herself in Rachel and Marc's affairs, to two Japanese investors (Togo Igawa and Akihiko Serikawa) suffering through the company of a grating Spanish guide (Marta Torn&eac...

The Rodrigo Cortés (Buried) thriller opens via Millennium Entertainment on July 13, 2012 and is also scripted by Cortés, who in turn produces alongside Adrián Guerra. In some films, particularly of the twists and turns variety, a significant event, moment or even line of dialogue, can be summarized by the phrase “This changes everything”. This is known as a Game Changer, where the established landscape of the movie’s plot is irrevocably and dramatically altered, with no chance of ever going back. Audience reaction can range from emotional sledgehammer to Wtf?
Often this single moment can encapsulate the whole film, and become its most famed component: everybody who has heard of The Crying Game is also familiar with its reveal. This isn’t the Twist Ending we’re talking about; this is the story shaking, ultimately defining wham moment.
Here are six great examples.
Obviously contains extensive spoilers.

José Coronado, No Rest for the Wicked Pedro Almodóvar didn't have much luck at the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Goya Awards this evening in Madrid: Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In won a total of four Goyas, but none for its director/writer. Starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon, Elena Anaya as his captive woman, and Jan Cornet as the good-looking young man whom the doctor blames for the death of his daughter, the sex-bending mystery melodrama won Goyas for Best Actress (Anaya), Best New Actor (Cornet), Best Original Music (Alberto Iglesias, his tenth Goya win), and Best Makeup/Hair. We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
I see a lot of movies. My fandom has a dark side too, I’ve seen so many plots play out that I can usually guess how things are going to go. When I sound glib while reviewing a trailer, it’s because I’ve seen the story play out before and I know where it’s going to go. So I love a movie that can shock me, whether in laughter, horror, sadness or empathy. This year I’ve had an abundance of these moments. These scenes knocked the complacency right out of me.
Be warned, this list is rife with Spoilers. If you don’t want to know key plot twists from the movies below, skip over them.

The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito) Directed by: Pedro Almodovar Written by: Pedro Almodovar (screenplay), Thierry Jonquet (book) Starring: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Blanca Suarez, Jan Cornet I’m unabashedly honest about my shortcomings, and I’ll freely admit I’ve never been a huge fan of Pedro Almodóvar’s films. Go ahead and slap my wrist, I deserve it. I haven’t tried that many, but I have never been able to get fully immersed in one of his films, until now. Almodóvar slithers into a dreamy tale of horror, revenge, obsession and betrayal with the superb The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito). It’s exquisitely depraved. Antonio Banderas plays Robert, a wealthy surgeon who lives on a sprawling estate equipped with its own surgical treatment room. There’s also an observation room that houses a mysterious woman (Vera, played by...

Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar is internationally known for his darkly humorous and often perverse explorations into gender and sexuality, but even more so about relationships between women and the men who love (while still often hating) them. His latest film, The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito), is no different in its general themes, but is the most stylized and visually and emotionally impacting of all his movies. Based on the novel Tarantula by Thierry Jonquet, The Skin I Live In effectively blends so many genres -- thriller, erotica, drama, horror and sci-fi -- that it will hopefully appeal to a wide audience.

The Skin I Live In
Directed by: Pedro Almodovar
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet
Running Time: 1 hr 58 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: October 21, 2011 (Chicago)
Plot: A scientist (Banderas) uses the body of another woman (Anaya) to try to recreate the entire body of his dead wife.
Who’S It For? Anyone who has seen an Almodovar movie will have an idea of what to expect from tone, including the movie’s “telenovela” tendencies. Fans of psychological dramas might be sucked into this movie, so long as they are patient with its step-by-step storytelling. However, there’s no guarantee for anyone as to how the ending will settle with you.
Expectations: Outside of Banderas and Almodovar, I knew little about this movie. Those two names were all I needed to dive curiously into the director’s followup to the quite good Broken Embraces.

Many of us have had our eye on Spanish actress Elena Anaya even before last year’s provocative Room In Rome, as the actress is also known for her co-starring role in Van Helsing as well as for sexing up Justin Timberlake’s "SexyBack" video. Now audiences will take even closer notice of Anaya for her co-starring role with Antonio Banderas in Pedro Almodóvar’s disturbing but compelling new film, The Skin I Live In.
In the film, Anaya plays Vera, a woman being held against her will in the luxurious home of Dr. Robert Ledgard for initially unclear reasons. While the first half of the film raises many questions about who Vera is, what her relationship to the whacked Doctor is and why she’s being held here (and why she wears a tight-fitting body suit, which shows off every curve of Anaya’s amazing body), the second half...

Some of Spain's greatest contributions to the world include Picasso, the modern acoustic guitar, sangria, and filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar. All make life richer, all are world renowned, and all are delightfully refreshing — especially the sangria.
Add to the list of Awesome Things from Spain: the enchanting actress Elena Anaya (last seen checking out of her Room in Rome), who stars with Antonio Banderas in Almodóvar's newest film, The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito).
Anaya plays Vera, a beautiful, strange young woman being held prisoner in an upscale villa owned by Dr. Robert Ledgard (Banderas). The doctor is a prominent plastic surgeon who's using her as a human guinea pig for the secret experiments he's carrying out in a customized operating theater in his basement.
The isolated villa provides the privacy Ledgard needs to work on his obsession: a supple, flawless, artificial skin impervious to injury, especially burns.

This film slices right to the brain.
I don’t know a single person who walked out of the screening for Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In who wasn’t at least fascinated. Many were thoroughly disturbed. I was delighted. Almodóvar assembled the kind of story I never thought would dare to see the mainstream screen, with a technical mastery that’s as good as any film that has.
My joy over The Skin I Live In has many roots. One is the style of horror film it is. Another is how bizarre and outrageously brave it is, but I’ll touch on that later. For all you eager genre film fans out there, I want to assure you right off the mark that the winding plot and psychological shocks are a deliciously unsettling experience.

Title: The Skin I Live In Directed By: Pedro Almodóvar Starring: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Blanca Suárez, Jan Cornet, Marisa Paredes, Bárbara Lennie, Eduard Fernández, Roberto Álamo Ever since the release of the film’s trailer, it’s been quite apparent that The Skin I Live In doesn’t play by the industry’s standard rules of story telling. While this is generally a stellar characteristic in terms of innovation, it also runs the risk of, well, being confusing. The Skin I Live In isn’t too tough to follow, but the storyline does delve into some elements particularly deeply and glosses over others, and while this recipe might work for some, for others it...

Title: The Skin I Live In Director: Pedro Almodóvar Cast: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Blanca Suarez, Jan Cornet, Roberto Alamo and Marisa Paredes. Pedro Almodovar has made an entire career of embracing the melodrama. With most every one of his films gravitating to highly emotional points, exaggerated plotting (almost to the point of a soap opera treatment) and vastly interesting characters driven by their emotions and yet, these decisions are often ambiguous and not clear why they were eventually driven this way. His new film, “The Skin I Live In,” is no different, but what is worth watching this time around with a new film by Pedro Almodovar is the...

The Skin I Live In (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2011, Spa) Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet, Marisa Paredes. 120 mins.
Almodóvar's silky skills and supreme confidence tempt respectable audiences into an elegantly twisted tale of surgical obsession that few others could pull off. It's best not to spell things out too much about this; suffice to say Banderas's project to create a new form of skin, with Anaya his captive guinea pig, doesn't go where you'd expect.
As usual, there's a lot going on beneath the surface.
One Day (12A)
(Lone Scherfig, 2011, Us) Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall. 108 mins.
Fans might not have had Hathaway's migratory trans-Pennine accent in mind when they fell in love with David Nicholls's calendar-crossing odd-couple romance on paper, and the equally wayward period details detract even further. A pity, given the promising material, but Grazia readers will lap it up just the same.

Some like their romantic comedies and others love period dramas or science fiction; I've got a long thing going with twisted tales--not quite horror--but seriously dark drama. Dead Ringers, The Comfort of Strangers, Blue Velvet, The Music of Chance are a few old favorites and I'm always in search of a new fix. This year's Venice Film Festival will premiere two entries that sound promising: Steve McQueen's Shame and Roman Polanski's Carnage, while Cannes has already seen the debut of Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In. As with most controversial films the reviews have been mixed, but more importantly, Skin had people talking ("disturbing," "operatic," "perverse,"). The muddled premise descriptions have had me curious from the outset and the short teaser left me wanting more. So no matter that we don't entirely understand the storyline (Antonio Banderas = surgeon/madman(?) seeking revenge against men who raped his...

It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. The very first titles from the 2011 fest were announced today, and there were definitely a lot of familiar faces among the 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations.
