Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

Here's my pitch to sell you on director Benjamin Brewer's Arcadian: it's A Quiet Place but with Nicolas Cage and better creature elements. The last part came as a huge shocker. Writer Michael Nilon sets the stage for an eerily familiar doomsday scenario that feels like Gareth Edwards' Monsters at first but quickly finds its roots as a sibling to John Krasinski's alien invasion franchise. Arcadian does take a bit to reach its full momentum, not as dynamically engaging as a survivalist drama, but once the monsters reveal themselves? Brewer executes what could be a knockout audition to direct the next A Quiet Place sequel, should there be more on the horizon.
We first meet Cage's protagonist, Paul, fleeing a metropolitan city under state-of-emergency sirens. Military rockets are fired towards an invisible foe as Paul escapes the crumbling architecture, eventually retreating to a homestead in farmland...

Independent movies, by their nature, tend to tell smaller stories that speak to specific experiences. As a viewer, this means that you might be rolling the dice when you watch one, because it might not be an experience that speaks to you. But there’s something truly special about those times when an indie film does resonate because you feel connected to it in ways that you never expected when you started watching. Such was the case for me and After Midnight, a love story by way of creature feature from Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella.
Funnily enough, on paper the premise isn’t one that immediately calls to mind aspects of my own past. Hank is a heavy-drinking hunter/bar owner in small-town Georgia. I grew up in Pennsylvania, don’t drink, and have been hunting once in my life. I’ve also never woken up one morning to...

2020 sucked in so many ways, but nobody told the movies. Here are some of my favorite things from a very, very weird year for all of us.
Color Out of Space (dir. Richard Stanley)
Richard Stanley’s return to directing after too many years away resulted in one of my favorite films of 2020 full stop, containing a great, unhinged performance from my favorite actor Nicolas Cage. It’s a neon-soaked nightmare and features maybe the second most disturbing visual of any movie in 2020; I won’t say what it is except that it involves family bonding. This is a bold, confident film, one that's weird, but never cold and disturbing without the nihilism of, say, Stanley's own Hardware. It's a horror film that's not afraid to go to really big places. It presents us with a true, exciting vision. Richard Stanley is back, and he's brought the best Lovecraft adaptation in 30 years with him.

There’s a monster terrorizing screenwriter/co-director Jeremy Gardner’s protagonist in “After Midnight,” and he doesn’t know why, what it is or where it came from. After 83 minutes, we still don’t know, either, but at least it has become clear this is one of those films that “defies categorization” by identifying with a marketable genre it’s nonetheless not really interested in.
Originally titled “Something Else” when it premiered at Tribeca last year, Gardner and collaborator Christian Stella’s film certainly wants to be something other than “just” a horror film, but … what? Ironically for a movie whose hero is accused of evading commitment, “After” also flirts with being a relationship drama, an indie-folk musical, a quirky comedy and whatnot. But none of these things ever quite coalesces, leaving their vehicle a jerry-rigged contraption of variably interesting, likable and skillful elements that only add up to one rather arbitrary goof.

"You see what it did to my door?!" Cranked Up Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film titled After Midnight, a creature feature from director Jeremy Gardner and producers Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead. This mumblecore-esque horror also stars Jeremy Gardner as a man whose girlfriend suddenly disappears, leaving a cryptic note as her only explanation. As his life begins to crack and fall apart, he is haunted by something that comes in from the woods and attacks his house every night. Co-starring Brea Grant, Henry Zebrowski, Ashley Song, Nicola Masciotra, & Justin Benson. Described as a "charming, introspective crowd-pleaser about love, loss, and monsters." I caught this at the Sitges Film Festival and it's good! Any and all horror fans should keep an eye on this film. One of the more poignant genre films I’ve seen this year is After Midnight, which was written by Jeremy Gardner and co-directed by Gardner and Christian Stella. The film is centered around a couple, Hank and Abby (the always excellent Brea Grant), who have been together a long time and are faced with some difficult decisions surrounding the future of their relationship. One day, Abby up and disappears, leaving Hank confused and distraught, but coincidentally enough, it’s at the same time he begins to believe a monster is after him, with everyone around him believing that his sanity is slipping away from him after Abby’s devastating departure.

News today that Cranked Up, the genre-focused brand of Good Deed Entertainment, have picked up Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella's Something Else and have rebranded it as After Midnight. This kind of makes more sense as the monster in their film shows up after 'after midnight'. It may also be a tip of the hat to Linklater's Before trilogy. Cranked Up will released After Midnight in cinemas and on-demand in the first quarter of 2020. I reviewed the film when it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. It turns out that (Something Else) After Midnight is really something special. Here is a character drama that gives us genuine characters to love and care about, that we can relate to, and stirs up...

A riveting and creepy slow burn, Something Else imagines a second kind of “darkness on the edge of town,” that feeling one might experience right between teenhood and adulthood, nearing 35, unmarried, childless and living in a small town. If you are prepping yourself for traditional mumblecore fare you’re half right as the leads do share a captivating and intimate conversation in one well-performed long take. Like its lead Hank (writer and co-director Jeremy Gardner) he commits to not commit, content with his life as a bar owner who enjoys hunting and the company of his longtime girlfriend and business partner Abby (Brea Grant). Abby, educated in Miami, is ultimately happy with her life but occasionally craves art and culture, and her disappearance at the center of the film sparks a kind of psychosis in Hank.

‘Something Else’: A Romantic Monster Movie With Terrific Balance Of Genre & Emotion [Tribeca Review]
Imagine if you took David Lowery‘s “A Ghost Story” and included a creepy-crawly terror that scratched at the door, or if Terrence Malick‘s “Badlands” took place in a desert close to where the worms in “Tremors” reside. It takes a true believer in the power of genre filmmaking to mount something so lovely and dreamlike against such a ludicrous, fanged backdrop, but that’s exactly what filmmakers Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella pull in “Something Else,” a joyous, strange creation that you could potentially describe as a “rom-monster” film.

Jeremy Gardner’s Something Else promises a brisk Florida creature feature, ends up a perfect companion to 2014’s Spring based on romantic tone, and seals all-important sincerity during a 90s-classic karaoke performance. “Slow burn” is the name of Gardner’s multifaceted game, as soulful stagnation festers under southern heat rays that cook up feelings of rural entrapment.
Life is beautiful yet fleeting; incomprehensible magnitude that’s as crushing as it can be spiritually freeing. Tribeca 2019’s most sentimental Midnighter is an ode to seeking answers and finding our paths in the most muddied, bizarre ways possible. Expressions of love, defensive barricades against unknowns beating down our doorsteps, and plenty of emptied bottles of cheap red wine. Something Else is indeed…no pun intended…something else.

Written by Jeremy Gardner and co-directed by Gardner and Christian Stella, Something Else is more of a rumination on modern relationships than it is a full-blooded genre film, which is what I enjoyed so much about it, making its title wholly indicative of just what kind of experience awaits fans as Gardner’s story unfolds.
Something Else follows Hank (Gardner) and Abby (Brea Grant), a couple who move into Hank’s rural family home that's tucked away from the world. As they begin to build their lives together, it’s apparent that Abby is having some reservations about settling into her new life and giving up certain parts of her past, and she decides one day to take off, only leaving a note behind for Hank to find, and not offering up any sort of real explanation for why she’s decided to disappear. I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time. I rented/bought the digital copy of Jeremy Gardner’s The Battery a long time ago, and have been raving about it since. It was announced recently that Shout! Factory would be bringing the title home, with one of its modern horror acquisitions under the Scream Factory Banner. Details have been scarce, including when we could expect the release to hit shelves, but Scream Factory have sent out a news blast today, detailing the release, its date, the extras and disc specifics. The title will be available beginning September 16th. And, believe it or not, it is a dollar cheaper to pre-order the title at Shout’s website, than it is to do so on Amazon. You should totally do that, so click here to do so. Below is all of the details you need about the release,...

Toronto-based Raven Banner has acquired international rights to Jeremy Gardner’s elevated genre hit The Battery.
The film tells the story of two former baseball players whose personalities clash as they traverse the rural back roads of a post-plague New England teeming with the undead.
“The Battery is a smart-witted and thrilling take on a subgenre we all thought was overused and on the wane but revived with an intelligent approach,” said Raven Banner’s manager of acquisitions, Annick Mahnert.
Managing partners James Fler and Michael Paszt brokered the deal on behalf of Raven Banner with producers Adam Cronheim and Christian Stella.

The Battery (2012)
Is there anything more American than baseball and zombies? Sure, that’s not how you’re normally used to hearing such a question, but since we’ve learned that neither applies or pie are truly American in their origin, we need to replace it with something. Anymore, it seems, zombies fit the bill fairly well.
I imagine asking myself, “what two things have never been put together on film,” and then I realize what writer and director Jeremy Gardner must have realized at some point when he developed the idea for making The Battery. This is a film that combines these two very American things, baseball and zombies, doing so in a simplistic way that preserves the core essence of both. You won’t find any rage-induced superhuman zombies or off-the-wall pseudo-scientific explanations for the cause here.
Gardner sets out to tell a story about survival, not unlike that of The Walking Dead,...

Several months back we brought you a glowing review of the ultra low-budget zombie movie The Battery (review here), written and directed by and starring Connecticut native Jeremy Gardner.
The film follows Ben (Gardner) and Mickey (Adam Cronheim), two former baseball players with clashing personalities, as they trek through a bleak landscape overrun with the walking dead searching for a glimmer of hope.
With the emphasis placed less on the zombies and more on the dynamic between the two diametrically opposite main characters, The Battery is an incredibly ambitious film that defies convention and is loaded with emotion and a sense of sentimentality not often seen in your traditional zombie flick. It’s also proof positive that a great movie is made through passion and dedication, not a huge budget or crazy special effects.

Since the strange plague began, two former baseball players have been stuck living the life of nomads and scavengers, scouring abandoned homes for resources and sleeping with one eye open. Armed with a bat and a beard, Jeremy Gardner not only directed and wrote The Battery, but also stars in his film as catcher-turned-ultimate-zombie-destroyer, Ben, opposite Adam Cronheim, as Mickey. This is by no means a perfect film and in some aspects relies on its own soundtrack to break the monotony of its characters' travels. However, I found myself enjoying the film, even in spite of my personal lack of desire to invest in a film that screams arthouse at ear-splitting volumes. Though not without its pretensions, it is a well-executed film in many ways and as a first-time cinematography credit for Christian Stella, it's also beautifully shot. As a whole, for Garne's directorial debut, this is a great start.
