Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. Last week we told you to never count out Blumhouse even when their movies look subpar, and what do you know, Happy Death Day overachieved with $26 million. This weekend will see a slew of new releases, but will they be able to take down the Groundhog Day influenced horror flick? Let’s see if Geostorm, Only the Brave, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, or The Snowman can do that.
Geostorm
What we are excited about: To be honest, not much. If we had to choose we would go with the expansive cast. Gerard Butler is always a generic action lead, but Jim Sturgess, Andy Garcia, and Ed Harris are mostly reliable actors. If these actors can elevate the typical boringness of a world disaster action film, maybe this can rise above the rest.

This year’s Afm had no single standout title, but a selection of high-profile projects and star appearances sparked buyer interest.
In an increasingly polarised independent space besieged by a talent exodus to TV and the might of digital platforms and studio acquisitions teams, the consensus was there was no single must-have title at the 2016 American Film Market (Afm). So it was up to a handful of appealing projects and star appearances to inject life into the market.
As Screen International revealed, Sacha Baron Cohen showed up at the Annapurna International offices to talk up his $20-30m Danish comedy remake Klown. Viola Davis trumpeted Gfm Films’ The Personal History Of Rachel DuPree, Margot Robbie met Sierra/Affinity buyers for I, Tonya, and Mark Wahlberg took part in a TWC-Dimension presentation with writer-director Damian Szifron for The Six Billion Dollar Man.
COO David Glasser expects to begin pre-sales in December on Szifron’s Wild Tales follow-up, and orchestrated...

X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary has admitted that he is a big fan of semi finalist singer Rebecca Ferguson.
O’Leary compared the Liverpudlian mum of two to cartoon character Jessica Rabbit and said she has ‘come a long way’ since she first auditioned for the ITV show.
He told The News Of The World:
Miss Consistent. One of the nicest people in the competition, she’s always been polite to the team – and also has a knockout voice. Pure Jessica Rabbit.
As Simon’s said, she has shown some nerves over the last few weeks but who wouldn’t when the stakes are so high? Compare this Rebecca to the one who auditioned in Manchester and it’s a completely different girl. She’s come a long way and might just make it all the way.
Are you a Rebecca fan? Do you think she can make the final?...
