4 Chicago Fire characters we'd love to see return for cameos in 2025
Image
Chicago Fire is going to be bringing back Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker). We're pretty stoked. It's been a long wait to get to the former 51 Chief, and he will be returning at a pretty critical time in the Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) tenure. Pascal is not dealing with the trauma of his wife's death in a particularly healthy manner, and Boden will all but certainly notice.

Boden's return got us thinking about all the Chicago Fire characters who have come and gone over the years. The ones who haven't died on the job, and simply decided to move on to different places and chapters in their lives. We decided to jot down the characters who we'd like to see return for a cameo, in an effort to manifest it actually happening.

Chicago Fire: One breakup (and one hookup) we didn't see coming last episode
Image
"Relief Cut" was sold as, and will be remembered as, the episode in which Stellaride decided to start a family. The whole episode was building up to their decision, and the final scene delivered with a twist that well, we have all seen before.

We digress. The episode also had some interesting subplots involving secondary characters. We had major developments in the romantic lives of two 51 members, one negative and one positive. We will start with the negative, which was bestowed upon poor Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri).

Ritter's boyfriend broke up with him

The character had been dating a police officer for most of season 13, but things were starting to take a turn for the worse by the start of "Relief Cut." So much so, in fact, that he got distracted in the field, and failed to carry out a direct order from Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

Ritter apologized,...

Fantasy Series With 91% Rt Score Gets New Streaming Home After Leaving Netflix
Image
A fantasy series, with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, is getting a new streaming home after leaving Netflix. Although it has managed to successfully launch several genres, particularly old-school thrillers like The Night Agent and supernatural teen fare such as Stranger Things and Wednesday, there's an argument to be made that the most global streaming platform has struggled to find a fantasy tentpole on the level of HBO's House of the Dragon or Prime Video's Wheel of Time.

The Witcher has had notable success, although not without its share of turmoil. Series lead Henry Cavill has exited the project, with his role as Geralt of Rivia to be played by Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher season 4. It also hasn't been a franchise starter, with spinoffs failing to gain much traction so far. Shadow and Bone has faired even worse, getting cancelled much to the frustration of its audience. It's an important genre...

Haunted Season 13: Fallout From Chicago Fire S12s Severide & Damon Cliffhanger Teased By Showrunner
Image
Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman has teased how there will be fallout from season 12's Severide (Taylor Knney) and Damon (Michael Bradway) cliffhanger, indicating a complex relationship moving forward. At the end of the previous batch of episodes, Chicago Fire season 12 revealed Severide and Damon are brothers, with Benny Severide (Treat Williams) confirmed to be their father. This came from a confession from Damon, potentially bringing up the old complicated relationship Severide had with his now-deceased dad. It also sets the stage as something they'll both need to wrestle with in season 13.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Newman explained the fallout from Damon's revelation to Severide about them being brothers in Chicago Fire season 13. The showrunner explains how the news will bring the Lieutenant back to his past, having him explore his relationship with his father and family through a new lens. She also hints at events transpiring between the pair in early episodes,...

The American fantasy romantic comedy 13 Going on 30 was a tremendous commercial success at the box office and also one of the biggest-selling DVD rental titles in 2004. Jennifer Garner starred as Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who suddenly finds herself being 30-years-old.

Jennifer Garner told Vogue, celebrating the film’s 20th anniversary, that after watching 13 Going on 30, she realized she had never seen herself smile so much on screen. She mentioned that the character Jenna Rink was the closest she had ever played to her own personality.

Whisky Doc ‘The Water Of Life’, Exec Produced By ‘The Magicians’ Brittany Curran, Lands At PBS
Image
The Water of Life, a documentary about Scotland’s whisky industry, has been picked up by PBS.

The public broadcaster will launch the feature doc, which is exec produced by The Magicians star Brittany Curran, in June.

The doc was shot in six countries on three continents over three years and tells the story of the creative revolution that saved Scotland’s once flagging whisky industry and turned it into the global titan it is today.

It features a half-dozen distillers and distilleries but focuses much of its time on the resurrection of the tiny Bruichladdich Distillery on the remote Scottish island of Islay. Led by Mark Reynier and whisky legend Jim McEwan, the distillery went from being a mothballed memory to a world-beating innovator in a matter of years, helping to save the struggling economy of the island often called Whisky Island.

It also includes whisky writer Charles Maclean,...

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 12 Trailer and Release Date
Stella Maeve, Summer Bishil, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Arjun Gupta in The Magicians (2015)
The Magicians has been a force of nature from the very start, growing a loyal audience and weaving a tale that bridged our world with the storybook land of Fillory and has become more and more complex ever since. Given its massive appeal, including our glowing reviews over the years, the anticipation was high for the return of season 5, which turned out to be the show’s final season.

The logline for The Magicians season 5 spoke of plenty of magical mayhem that was in store:

Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends— and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it,...

‘The Magicians’ to End After Season 5 on Syfy
Stella Maeve, Summer Bishil, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Arjun Gupta in The Magicians (2015)
And for its final trick, “The Magicians” is bidding farewell.

Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.

Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. The series first premiered on Syfy in January 2016, and has been one of its most consistent shows over the last four years.

News of the show’s end means that the NBCUniversal-owned cabler’s scripted roster has been whittled down to only a couple of returning series. However, Syfy is gearing up to premiere several new offerings in the near future, and recently ordered a pair of shows including one inspired...

Mark Ruffalo Forgot He Worked With Brie Larson Before Avengers: Endgame
In a case of superhero inception, it turns out that Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson have co-starred in a movie together before Avengers: Endgame. But here’s the Marvel-level plot twist: Ruffalo had no idea about it. Not a clue.

Welcome to the club, Hulk…neither did I nor half the world’s population. See what I did there?

In a quick red carpet chat with Entertainment Tonight at the La premiere of Endgame, Et’s Kevin Frazier asked Ruffalo about Larson being in 13 Going On 30. The Strongest Avenger said he had no clue she was in the movie, and his reaction to her being one of the “mean girls” in the film was pretty funny:

“She was a mean girl. Oh my god, that’s amazing! Wow, I didn’t know that. It looks like her a lot. It’s her.”

The Magicians Season 5: 11 Questions to Answer
Kayti Burt Apr 17, 2019

We have a lot of questions after The Magicians Season 4 finale. Here are the biggest ones we hope Season 5 addresses.

Warning: This The Magicians article contains Major spoilers for the Season 4 finale.

The Magicians Season 4 finale was arguably the most devastating season-ender in the show's history. The only thing that is keeping me going at this point is the knowledge that the writers' room is already hard at work on The Magicians Season 5, spinning out the most emotionally-affecting, unpredictably truthful answers to the following questions...

Is Quentin really dead?

If Quentin is coming back to the show, then The Magicians creative team is playing very coy about it—as in straight-up lying. The executive producers released this statement in regards to Quentin's death, following the airing of the season finale:

“Before we began this season, we entered into a creative conversation that included the writers, executive producer and director Chris Fisher,...

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 12 Review: The Secret Sea
A strong theme ties this episode of The Magicians together nicely, and with powerful magic at the ready, an exciting end is no doubt near.

TV

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 12

When The Magicians gets something right, it really nails it. Here, what really works is the thematic concept that growing and evolving doesn’t mean shedding the past, and this idea appears across multiple storylines in “The Secret Sea” with impressive universality. Margo doesn’t have to give up her bitch persona just because she cares for Josh, and Quentin doesn’t have stop loving Fillory just because he’s seen its dark side. Even Christopher Plover, despite what he thinks about his own persecution, illustrates the idea to Zelda that the past remains a part of someone no matter how they change. Perhaps this will also hold true for Julia and Eliot who...

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 11 Review: The 4-1-1
As expected, the storylines are starting to converge in The Magicians as its finale nears, and the nostalgic trip to season 1 was welcome.

TV

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 11

It’s somehow comforting that The Magicians can settle into its pattern of revealing unexpected similarities between its disparate storylines, reassuring fans that it knows exactly what it’s doing even when it leaves certain threads dangling. “The 4-1-1” started connecting the dots between the Monster, the Library, and perhaps even Fillory’s dilemma in this second-to-last episode of the season and combined it with a great trip down memory lane for Alice and Quentin. And after allowing Margo to go on Janet’s desert journey from the Lev Grossman novels last week, the timing for giving Quentin his long sought discipline was perfectly suited to the moment.

Let’s tackle the speculation first. Presumably...

Sci Fi Fidelity Podcast: The Order
Michael Ahr Dave Vitagliano Mar 31, 2019

Our genre television podcast hosts take on Netflix's recently renewed supernatural drama The Order, which features witches and werewolves.

We've been discussing quite a few supernatural shows lately on Sci Fi Fidelity, from A Discovery of Witches to Always a Witch, and even our recent interview with Brittany Curran of The Magicians. At first blush, The Order on Netflix may seem very much like The Magicians with its hidden society of magic users on a college campus, but with the introduction of the opposing werewolf force, the show becomes eminently discussable.

A big part of the podcast discussion is the immediate family chemistry between protagonist Jack Morton (Jake Manley) and his grandfather (Matt Frewer) and the undeniable sparks between Jack and his mentor in the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, Alyssa Drake (Sarah Grey). Since the pilot of The Order was admittedly shaky,...

Sci Fi Fidelity Podcast: Brittany Curran Interview - The Magicians
Michael Ahr Dave Vitagliano Mar 24, 2019

After recurring for a season and making the character her own, she became a series regular in season 3, and now in season 4, Fen has taken on one of the central storylines of the series.

The Sci Fi Fidelity podcast hosts spoke with Curran about the amazing evolution of her character in The Magicians, from her chemistry with the other principal characters to the changes in her wardrobe that have reflected Fen's heightened importance. The Magicians Season 4 Episode 9 Review: The Serpent
The Magicians goes all in on the Library’s fascist control of magic while it liberates and dethrones others in an insightful episode.

TV

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 9

The lack of unified quests that we worried about in last week’s episode of The Magicians takes a step in the right direction in “The Serpent.” In addition to an intriguing twist in the hedge witch storyline, the rescue of Harriet gave us some wonderful insights into Alice’s character, and there were moments in Fillory that likely left few dry eyes in the audience. And of course, the mission to recover the Monster’s missing parts took a surprising turn and upped the ante in ways that we have yet to fully comprehend. Fortunately, the fog seems to be clearing up around the disparate conflicts, and although the way forward is fraught with difficulties for Julia,...

“The Side Effect” is a spiritual sequel — and, at times, a narrative sequel — to “Six Short Stories About Magic,” a wonderful Season Three episode that told a collection of...

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 7 Review: The Side Effect
The Magicians reminds us that “the most important characters aren’t who you expect,” in this week’s cleverly executed episode.

TV

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 7

The Magicians is making us eat our words as it answers the exact question we were critically posing last week: “Where the heck is Kady?” In a wonderfully meta homage to minor characters, Penny 40 makes his return with an exploration of what’s really important in the story of season 4, and although we don’t really get a full picture of how Kady’s revolution, Fen’s prophecies, and Zelda’s misgivings about the Order relate to each other, the seeds have now been planted, and we’re dying to know how it turns out. Since we’re now in the back half of the season, there’s a greater expectation for resolution to the problem of the...

The Magicians Season 4 Goes Further Than Fillory
Chris Longo Jan 23, 2019

We went to Brakebills to learn more about The Magicians Season 4.

It’s the last day of school for The Magicians Season 4.

A group of makeup artists sit in a semi-circle around a monitor and Hale Appleman, who plays Eliot, gives a lengthy goodbye hug to each one. Brittany Curran, who plays Fen, shot her final scene the day prior, and the name on her chair is now covered with pink tape that spells out “Wrapped.” Rick Worthy, the suddenly controversial Dean Fogg, is anything but as he’s walking around the set with a smile and a wine glass filled with candy in his hand. Worthy’s dog Buddy, a burly chocolate lab, trails behind, leisurely wagging his tail and making new friends along the way. Everywhere on set the end of the semester looms large over Brakebills; the bittersweet goodbyes to close friends, the feeling of relief,...

‘The Magicians’ Renewed for Season 5 at Syfy, Adds New Co-Showrunner

“‘The Magicians’ raised the bar at Syfy and has gained momentum season after season, attracting a new audience to the channel. We are proud of this series as it continues to break the boundaries of storytelling,” said Bill McGoldrick, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. Currently, the characters have forgotten who they are, having had their minds wiped by “The Monster,” who has sought them out for still unknown reasons.

“We couldn’t be happier or more excited to conjure another year of magic and all it entails — love,...

‘The Magicians’ Unveils SyFy Season 4 Trailer And The New Quest
Stella Maeve, Summer Bishil, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Arjun Gupta in The Magicians (2015)
SyFy’s The Magicians has conjured its official season four trailer, showcasing the core group’s struggle to remember their identities and rediscover each other. The new episodes start on Jan. 23 at 9 Pm Et/8 Central.

Last season, the core group embarked on the epic quest of the seven keys to restore magic after it was turned off. In the finale, just as our magicians finally restored magic by unlocking the fountain at the other end of the Wellspring, the Library, Irene McAllistair and Dean Fogg swooped in to reroute magic to them.

In exchange, Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each – except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library – a new, magic-free identity. Even with their new identities, our core group is far from safe. Inside Castle Blackspire an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot.

Visual Snow Initiative Launches With Successful Conference And High-Profile Collaborations
The Visual Snow Initiative has concluded the first ever Visual Snow Conference which took place on May 5, 2018 at Ucsf.

Founded by Sierra Domb, the Visual Snow Initiative was created to bring attention to Visual Snow, a condition that affects all ages. Visual Snow is a brain disorder which has many visual and non-visual symptoms. The main indicator of Visual Snow is that people experience seeing the world through an overlay of tiny pixilated dots. These visual disturbances persist 24/7 with the eyes open or closed. The medical community is not yet fully educated on this condition. As a result, most people who suffer from Visual Snow are misdiagnosed or marginalized by well-intentioned but unknowing physicians.

The Visual Snow Initiative has teamed up with Brandefy, Conscience Entertainment Group, and The Artists Project to produce public service announcements featuring actors, recording artists, and professional athletes. Celebrities who support the Visual Snow Initiative through...

Review: “The Man From Earth: Holocene” (2017; Directed by Richard Schenkman) MVDvisual Blu-ray Special Edition
“Sci-fi For The Mind”

By Raymond Benson

Renowned science fiction writer Jerome Bixby produced many short stories in the genre, but he is perhaps most well-known for writing a handful of classic Star Trek episodes. The memorable original Twilight Zone entry, “It’s a Good Life,” was based on his short story, as was the same segment in The Twilight Zone—The Motion Picture (1983). Bixby was also responsible for the stories or scripts for sci-fi films such as Fantastic Voyage (1966), and It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).

Bixby’s last work, allegedly completed on his deathbed in 1998, was the screenplay The Man from Earth. Nearly ten years later (2007), Bixby’s son Emerson helped bring it to the screen as producer. The low-budget feature was directed by Richard Schenkman and starred David Lee Smith as “John Oldman,” a man in the present day who has lived without aging for 14,000 years. Released with little fanfare,...

Piracy as Marketing Tool? ‘The Man from Earth: Holocene’ Producers Have Made $45,000 From Self-Pirating Their Movie
The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
If you can’t beat them, join them.

That’s what the independent producers of “The Man From Earth: Holocene” concluded about the inevitable piracy of their sci-fi film, a sequel to the 2007 cult hit “The Man From Earth.”

More than two months before its April 3 release on digital and DVD, they uploaded it to The Pirate Bay — available in up to 1080p HD format — and it spread to other services. The video is book-ended by an appeal from director-producer Richard Schenkman to consider donating some money if they watched the movie. “If you like it, support it, and remember that sharing is caring,” reads the note they included with the digital versions they distributed on piracy networks.

Since “self-pirating” their movie on Jan. 15, according to Schenkman and producer Eric D. Wilkinson, they’ve received nearly $45,000 in donations via their site, manfromearth.com, from fans and supporters around the world including China,...

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Will You Play With Me?
On The Magicians Season 3 Episode 13, viewers were offered a satisfying cliffhanger that serves as the perfect ending to a near perfect season.

“Will You Play With Me?” ended up being both exactly and not at all what I expected from this season’s finale. Completing the quest was ultimately in the cards.

Not having the team unlock magic would have essentially made all the mechanisms of the season a waste. But the ultimate cost of turning it back on was the real shocker and proves that The Magicians writers have a real understanding of what separates a good plot twist from a great one.

If you took the events of the final The Magicians Season 3 episode at face value, it might not seem all that satisfying. Particularly as much of what was gained over 12 episodes was lost in 42 minutes.

Julia became a goddess and then quickly gave up her powers to save magic.

The Magicians: Brittany Curran Talks Fen's Transformation and a Final Fairy Queen Meeting
The Magicians third season is easily the Syfy series best yet. With much of the drama focused on a key quest designed to bring magic back, characters from Brakebills to Fillory have had to lean on each other in new, exciting and more complicated ways.

That includes Fen, the native Fillorian promised to High King Eliot since she was a child. Starting her arc as a somewhat hapless and "unworldly" rural Fillorian, Fen ultimately played key roles in helping the children of Earth attempt to right their wrongs.

Delivered each week to audiences with heart and moxie by actress Brittany Curran, Fen has seen a rather grand transformation across this very soon to be completed 13-episode season.

From seducing her half-interested husband in a foggy haze, attempting to build a family, and acquainting herself with emojis to a secret history of Fillorian resistance fighting, losing her child (and toes) to bad deals,...

The Magicians has been renewed for season 4
Michael Ahr Mar 1, 2018

Syfy has given The Magicians season 4 the go-ahead, assuring fans that there's more magic to come...

With fans eager for more adventures at Brakebills, in Fillory, and beyond, Syfy's recent renewal announcement guarantees that The Magicians season 4 will be a reality. Coming just past the halfway mark of season 3, the news is neither surprising nor expected quite this early, but audience reception has always been overwhelmingly positive for this quirky, funny, sometimes dark fantasy. The series has been Syfy’s top performing scripted original among the key 18-49 demographic for the past three years.

Based on the best-selling novels by Lev Grossman, The Magicians centres on Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and his 20-something friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they’ve come to know. In season 3, our core group embarks on the epic quest...
