The Phoenician Scheme director Wes Anderson has mocked Donald Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on films made outside the US.
“The tariff is interesting because I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff before,” said Anderson in a tongue-in-cheek response to a question from Screenat the Cannes press conference for his Competition title.
“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but I feel that means he’s saying he’s going to take all the money. And then what do we get? So it’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.

Wes Anderson appeared before reporters Monday to discuss his new film, The Phoenician Scheme, and address President Trump’s recently mentioned plan for a 100 percent tariff on films made outside the U.S. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Benicio Del Toro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Riz Ahmed and Mia Threapleton, Anderson said he needs more information before responding.
“I’ve never heard of a 100 percent tariff,” he said, then asked the press, “Can you hold up the movie in customs? I want to know the details first.” His remarks drew laughter from the room, where crew and cast packed the press room.
The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson’s fourth competition entry at Cannes, follows Zsa-zsa Korda (Del Toro), a reclusive magnate threatened by multiple attempts on his life. At the center is Korda’s cryptic plan to transfer his wealth to his daughter, a young nun, through an elaborate financial operation.

As an American writer-director who now lives and makes his films in Europe, Wes Anderson could be a target for Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on films made outside the U.S. But at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, Anderson mostly appeared confused by the president’s vague proclamations.
“The tariff is fascinating,” Anderson said when asked about the issue. “I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff. I feel that he’s saying he’s going to take all the money, and then what do we get?”
He grinned and shrugged. “It’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? I want to know the details first. And I’ll hold off on my official answer.”
Anderson made the comments at a press conference with actors Benicio del Toro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Cera, Mia Threapleton, Riz Ahmed, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade.

Wes Anderson‘s next film project will be a collaboration with co-writer Roman Coppola and U.K. comedian and actor Richard Ayoade, who stars in the director’s The Phoenician Scheme, which premiered in the competition of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday night.
Anderson teased his collaborators during a Cannes press conference on Monday without disclosing further details about his latest movie.
The press event saw Anderson and a busload of his stars cramming into the Cannes press conference room to answer questions about the Phonecian Scheme. Among the members of the ensemble cast joining him on stage were Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Ayoade. Frequent Anderson collaborator Bill Murray, was also in attendance, but sat in the audience, jumping to his feet when Anderson and the rest of the cast entered, leading the crowd in welcoming applause.

Leave it to Wes Anderson to bring a touch of whimsy to the Trump tariff war.
Asked about Trump’s proposal to introduce a 100 percent tariff on “foreign-made movies,” at the Cannes press conference for his new feature, The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson played perplexed.
“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but a 100 percent tariff? Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does “have a darkness.” He’s collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title.
Anderson didn’t specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson’s: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson’s fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes.

Wes Anderson, who shot his fourth Cannes premiere, The Phoenician Scheme, at Studio Babelsberg in Germany, was called to the carpet in the press room about his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s suggested tariffs on film and TV imports.

Wes Anderson skewered Donald Trump’s proposed tariff on movies shot abroad at a Cannes press conference for his new film “The Phoenician Scheme,” questioning how it will work.
“Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way,” the director said, evoking a chorus of laughter.
“The Phoenician Scheme,” which features a sprawling cast of Anderson regulars, shot in partly Germany. When asked about the tariffs, Anderson initially replied: “I thought you said he was giving us a plug or something. Did Trump see it?”
But he then went on to mock the idea: “The tariff is interesting because I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff before. I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but I feel that means he’s saying he’s going to take all the money. And then what do we what do we get? So it’s complicated to me.

The breaking news out of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday was that Wes Anderson made another Wes Anderson movie.
The Oscar-winning director launched The Phoenician Scheme at the prestigious festival, the fourth time Anderson has premiered one of his projects on the French Riviera following Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.
“More linear than Asteroid City or The Grand Budapest Hotel and yet significantly harder to follow than either of them, The Phoenician Scheme is the busiest of Anderson’s films, and also — at least on first viewing — the least rewarding,” wrote Indiewire critic David Ehlrich in his mixed review. It’s a sentiment shared by several top critics.
“The swashbuckling sire, the deadpan ingénue, the sans serif font, the one-point perspective — Anderson’s held fast to his favorite elements even as his canvases have gotten broader and his style even more fastidious,” wrote Vulture critic Alison Wilmore.

It’s not Cannes without Wes Anderson, and the Houston native’s The Phoenician Scheme has its world premiere Sunday night in Cannes, notching a 7½-minute ovation. First-time Anderson-film star Mia Threapleton was tearing up as the crowd’s applause continued.
“The only thing really I can think to say — I think of 12 words to say that would stand for everything in this movie,” Anderson said to the audience after the screening. He then proceeded to point at and name-check his castmates who were on hand, along with longtime writing and producing partner Roman Coppola. Here’s how it went down:

Wes Anderson has delighted the Cannes Film Festival once more with his latest directorial effort “The Phoenician Scheme,” which played in competition two years after “Asteroid City” did the same at the 2023 festival. “The Phoenician Scheme” earned Anderson and his sprawling cast a 6.5-minute standing ovation.
Anderson’s leading lady Mia Threapleton — who has acting in her blood thanks to mother Kate Winslet — was overcome with emotion as the applause raged on, smiling as tears poured down her face. I’ve said it before — and I’ll say it again unless Wes Anderson suddenly shifts gears and makes an earthy Dogma ’25 film — but I don’t think Wes Anderson makes “movies.” He makes moving dioramas. The worlds he creates for us are intimately crafted, finely mapped and production designed with an uncanny eye for detail. One suspects that Anderson handpicks every tile on every floor in his movies, and could tell you exactly what’s wrong with each of the individual slabs he rejected.
But Anderson’s diorama films are not, despite some hack AI enthusiasts’ insistence to the contrary, easily imitated. You may recognize his signature perpendicular framing and penchant for symmetry, and you can approximate them at home, but Anderson tells meaningful stories within those stylistic obsessions. His movies are about people controlling every aspect of their lives, right down to their uniform-like clothes, their tidy board...

Over coffee in Soho, Antonia Desplat is describing her journey to Wes Anderson’s set for The Phoenician Scheme — the espionage drama that marks his fourth picture to compete for the Palme d’Or.
Desplat was working on French TV drama Made in France when the email arrived: “Wes wants to know if you want to come to Potsdam next week to play one of Benicio del Toro’s dead wives.”
One year before being beckoned to Germany by Anderson, Desplat had played the female lead in Johnny Depp’s Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, opening in June, which chronicles Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s rampage through pre-World War I Paris. Desplat plays Modigliani’s lover, the formidable writer and poet Beatrice Hastings.

The experience of engaging with a film can give you a reference for expressing a personal idea that you didn’t previously have the words for. This transference makes a moot point of all criticisms that could reasonably be leveled at the film. What do flaws matter, when you walk out of the cinema knowing how to finally say something you’ve been yearning to say? “The Plague” is full of ideas executed with varying degrees of resonance. It is not for everyone. But it could mean a lot to people like me.
In his debut feature, filmmaker Charlie Polinger plays with broad riffs on coming-of-age, body horror, and bullying genres before paring these themes back to reveal that two 12-year-old boys — and their contrasting approaches to being different — are really the heartfelt preoccupation of the film.

When I spoke to Alan Rudolph a couple months ago, he confirmed that Criterion had sought to release his Remember My Name but were held up by music rights––a situation so complicated that a lawyer hired by the director himself simply gave up. I like to think something’s changed in less than 60 days: the Criterion Channel will stream Remember My Name as part of a quartet featuring Afterglow, Trouble In Mind, and Breakfast of Champions, the latter recently given a 4K restoration. It’s part of a retrospective-heavy month that also includes a 12-title Johnnie To series, numerous films by René Clair, highlights of Amy Holden Jones and Ougie Pak, and Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip saga in both television and theatrical editions. Meanwhile, Gene Hackman is celebrated with six titles.

Fox will be the place to go for animated comedies on broadcast television. After recently giving several animated shows big renewals, three more have been confirmed.
Per Deadline, Fox has just renewed the following animated shows: Krapopolis, Grimsburg, and Universal Basic Guys. The news follows the network recently giving four-season renewals of the long-running animated shows The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and American Dad!. In the case of American Dad!, the series also is making its return to Fox after making the move from TBS, though it originally aired its first nine seasons on Fox.
Krapopolis is currently in its second season, which is concluding this month. The show, created by Dan Harmon, imagines a more zany version of ancient Greek lore where humans interact with gods and mythical creatures. It had previously been renewed through Season 4, and the new renewal by Fox will guarantee a fifth season of the show.

Fox has greenlit more seasons of three of its adult animated series: “Universal Basic Guys,” “Grimsburg,” and “Krapopolis.”
“Grimsburg” and “Universal Basic Guys” are both returning for Season 3, while “Krapopolis” has been renewed for Season 5.
“Krapopolis,” which has received a Season 5 order ahead of Season 3, “is set in mythical ancient Greece and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities, while also trying their best to not kill each other in the process. The series centers on Deliria (Hannah Waddingham), goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. As petty as she is powerful, Deliria is only interested in defending civilization if it means she’ll get more worshipers out of it than her frenemies up on Mt. Olympus,” according to the official description.
Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy and Duncan Trussell also star.

Nick Cave and Richard Ayoade are among those reading out the posthumously discovered missives that inspired an album by Emilíana Torrini, who soundtracks this gorgeous film
You’d be forgiven for not having heard of Geraldine Flower, the subject of A new film from artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the pair behind the 2014 Nick Cave documentary 20,000 Days on Earth. (Cave makes an appearance here reading a letter or two.) Flower was not famous in her lifetime and in fact, after watching the film we’re none the wiser about how she spent her later years. But when she died in 2019, a suitcase packed with hundreds of love letters written to her by smitten men in the 60s and 70s was found in her London flat.

Among the lineup for the Cannes Film Festival’s 78th edition are some big names from Hollywood and global cinema. We already knew that Tom Cruise will light the fuse on Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 14 out of competition, while there was plenty of speculation that Scarlett Johansson would have a pair of movies on the Croisette. The latter has now been confirmed with Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great set for Un Certain Regard, and her acting reteam with Wes Anderson in his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, in Competition. Also confirmed is Ari Aster’s Eddington with Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.
Many more stars are potentially in store now that the bulk of the official selection has been revealed. Not everyone is confirmed to attend the Riviera shindig, but here’s a look at some of the possibilities.

Wes Anderson just dropped the trailer for his next movie, and yes, it’s serving retro spy vibes with a splash of pastel chaos. Written and directed by Anderson from a story he created with Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme is a black comedy that radiates chaotic brilliance before it even drops. Dropping in the summer of 2025, the movie is already turning heads for all the right reasons and no, you don’t need to know the plot to be obsessed. The vibes are immaculate.
From the second the trailer hit, it was clear: this isn’t just another quirky Wes flick but a full-on cinematic aesthetic bomb. We’re talking saturated color palettes, slow pans, oddly specific occupations, and dialogue so dry it crackles. If you live for Anderson’s perfect blend of heart and hyper-artifice, this one’s going straight to the top of your Letterbox.

Saturday Night Live is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, which included a star-studded special episode last month, the series is crossing the pond for a new UK version. First airing in 1975, the live sketch comedy series has been a staple of American TV for 50 years. Some other countries have already joined in on the fun, with Japan launching its own version in 2012, and Canada hosting its own version from 2014-2015. Now, it's the UK's turn.
According to Deadline, a UK version of Saturday Night Live is officially in the works. The series was initially teased three years ago, with Sky developing the UK version. Now, Saturday Night Live UK has been given the green light. The new version is slated to debut in 2026, although a more precise release date has not yet been revealed. Lorne Michales, who created the series back in 1975, is executive producing the new version.

Nobody 2 has officially received an R rating for “strong bloody violence, and language throughout.” You likely never had any doubt, but it’s nice to have it confirmed. Additionally, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme has landed a PG-13 rating for “violent content, bloody images, some sexual material, nude images, and smoking throughout.“
Our own Chris Bumbray caught the first trailer for Nobody 2 at CinemaCon. It features Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) taking his family on vacation. When his daughter gets picked on, and his son gets beaten up, Hutch is ready to defend his family. Unfortunately, the resort is run by an infamous crime syndicate, and they mark the family for death. The trailer hasn’t made its way online yet, but hopefully, we’ll be seeing that soon because it sounds like a blast.
In addition to Odenkirk, the sequel will also see the return of Connie Nielsen as Hutch’s wife,...
