"Be careful not to mess with the balance of things" says the strangely wise Wizards of Waverly Place intro, making for one of Disney Channel's best theme songs. Following wizards-in-training and siblings Alex (Selena Gomez), Justin (David Henrie), and Max (Jake T. Austin), Wizards of Waverly Place is punchy and delightfully weird. Disney Channel sampled sci-fi and fantasy a few more times with future examples of their characteristic live-action sitcoms, but they all decidedly lack the charm and emotional strength of the story of the Russo family.
Released in 2007, Wizards of Waverly Place is a comedy fantasy series created by Todd J. Greenwald for the Disney Channel. The series follows a trio of teenage siblings living in a magical portion of New York City as they train to harness their family's magical legacy while trying to blend in with everyday people.
Cast David DeLuise, Maria Canals-Barrera, David Henrie, Jake T.

When Wizards of Waverly Place first aired in 2007, Janice LeAnn Brown wasn’t even born yet. Some of the original cast, including Henrie and Gomez, now both in EP roles, have returned for the sequel series. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place carries on the story of the Russo family years after the classic Disney Channel series and in certain ways, repeats it. That is until Alex shows up with a young wizard who is as chaotic as she once was and asks her brother to take the girl in and train her.

Everything is not what it seems — even when it comes to what the original “Wizards of Waverly Place” characters are up to in the sequel series. Some of those updates are fairly surprising.
“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” which premiered on Disney Channel on Tuesday night and will be streaming its first nine episodes on Disney+ come Wednesday, centers on a now-adult Justin Russo (David Henrie), who’s living a non-magical life — well, sort of, more on that momentarily — with his wife and kids.
When Alex (Selena Gomez) shows up with a new young wizard who needs help, Justin has a choice to make in order to help safeguard the entire wizarding world.
Yes, we see Justin and his sister reunited in the premiere episode, and their futures might just be exactly what you predicted — or not.

The Russo family returned to Disney Channel on Tuesday, and it’s fair to say that things have never been less what they seem.
Picking up where Wizards of Waverly Place left off more than a decade ago, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place reintroduces fans to former teen wizard phenom Justin Russo (played by David Henrie), now a married father of two living on Staten Island. We learn in the premiere that he has been living a mortal, magic-free existence ever since he was fired as the youngest headmaster of WizTech over something referred to as “the unicorn incident.”

Twelve years after “Wizards of Waverly Place” ended, the iconic Disney Channel show is launching a sequel. “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” follows Justin Russo (David Henrie reprising his role), a vice principal living on Staten Island with his investigative reporter wife, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and their sons, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). Though Justin has retained his magical abilities, he’s put his wizarding days behind him. Neither Giada nor his boys know anything about his powers. This changes on the morning of Justin’s 34th birthday when rebellious and spunky 12-year-old wizard Billie (a phenomenal Janice LeAnn Brown) arrives at the Russo home. Hilarious, fun and charming, “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” is a worthy follow-up to its legendary original that will undoubtedly delight newcomers and longtime fans.

A fan-favorite Wizards of Waverly Place star has offered a careful response to their possible return in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, as the new sequel series continues to develop. While Selena Gomez's Alex and Jake T. Austin's Max will only be showing up as guest stars, it doesn't mean other familiar faces won't appear in the future.

Former “Wizards of Waverly Place” co-stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie used to drink wine with Henrie’s wife and ponder what their characters Alex and Justin Russo would be up to today.
“And then at a certain point, I called Selena,” Henrie says, “and I was like, ‘Hey, I want to take this to Disney. Should we do this?’”
It’s hard to overstate how much “Wizards of Waverly Place,” which ended in 2012 after a four-season run, permeated the tween zeitgeist. The series centered on three siblings — Alex, Justin and Max (Jake T. Austin) — with magical abilities who were vying to become the family wizard. Alex’s spunk, the siblings’ competitive-yet-caring dynamic and winning elements like the “What’s That? A Hat!” jingle all served to captivate young viewers. The show launched Gomez’s multi-hyphenate superstardom and remains a top streaming series for children 6 to 11, per Disney.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is the sequel to the hugely popular Disney series, and here’s the trailer for the new series.
Wizards Of Waverly Place was among a collection of Disney shows, like Hannah Montana and Sonny With A Chance, that catapulted their female lead to superstardom.
Selena Gomez became a pop star alongside her Disney career, then transitioned into equally popular roles as an adult – Only Murders In The Building, in which she stars alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, has been renewed for a fifth series.
Created by Todd J Greenwald, Wizards followed Gomez as Alex Russo, the middle child in a family that also included older brother Justin, played by David Henrie, and Max, played by Jake T. Austin. David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Baria played parents Jerry and Theresa. The overarching plot saw the children compete between themselves in a competition to determine which of them would keep their powers.

Wizards Of Waverly Place Star Reunites With Alex Russo's Werewolf Boyfriend On Set Of Sequel Filming

David Henrie and Gregg Sulkin reunite on the set of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Premiering on the Disney Channel in 2007, Wizards of Waverly Place starred Selena Gomez as Alex, Henrie as Justin, and Jake T. Austin as Max, three magical siblings of the Russo family who compete to be the next family wizard. The world of the show is set to return with sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which sees Justin embrace the non-wizarding life as father to Milo (Max Matenko) before Alex introduces him to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a wizard who seeks to be Justin's apprentice.

The Disney Channel was an incredibly popular brand during its prime, holding a significant place in children's pop culture from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. The channel was home to numerous popular TV series and films, each of which had its own distinct stories and characters. However, many of those featured something in common: a prominent romantic storyline for its lead characters.
For many young viewers of the channel, these love stories were some of the first TV couples they consumed, becoming heavily invested in who their favorite characters would end up with by the end of their respective series. Many of these romantic storylines made use of common romantic comedy tropes, like miscommunication or love triangles. While the channel highlighted many of these love stories, some Disney Channel couples stood out as especially popular and beloved.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place just received a massive update, with David Henrie posting an Instagram reel where he revealed that David DeLuise will be reprising his role as Jerry Russo in the upcoming television series.
