‘SuperGrid’ VOD Review

Stars: Leo Fafard, Marshall Williams, Natalie Krill, Amy Matysio, Jonathan Cherry, Jay Reso, Tinsel Korey, Fei Ren, Daniel Maslany, Sheldon Bergstrom, Josh Strait, Laura Abramsen | Written by T.R. McCauley, Justin Ludwig | Directed by Lowell Dean

I was probably one of about seven people that wasn’t enamoured with Wolf Cop. There’s a lot of love for it, but I just didn’t have the same blast with it that everyone else seemed to. That’s not to say it’s a bad film, I was mid festival, severely sleep deprived and in need of a good rest. So, when offered Lowell Dean’s latest piece, SuperGrid, I was eager to see if this was a one off. Seems that yes, it was.

Deep in the throes of a pandemic, Brothers Jesse (Leo Fafard) and Deke (Marshall Williams) are tasked to do a ‘run’ across the SuperGrid, a dangerous wasteland...

Danny Trejo interview: Bullet, Machete, Con Air, Muppets
Interview Duncan Bowles 13 Mar 2014 - 06:29

Duncan catches up with the star of Bullet and Machete to talk about stunts, dancing, and Miss Piggy...

The last but one answer in this interview has a slight spoiler for Muppets Most Wanted.

If there’s one thing I discovered from our chat with Danny Trejo, it’s that he laughs a lot. For an actor who’s made a career out of playing bad asses whose actions speak louder than words, it was a strange thing to hear him so openly chuckling – when our call was connected I asked how he was doing and he replied “Great, we were just talking about Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles – probably before your time, but it’s really funny!” and what followed was one of the most entertaining interviews I’ve ever done.

We were lucky enough to get a good amount of Mr Trejo’s time,...

Amfm Fest Wraps in Cathedral City, CA
We are always glad to see Fests close to L.A. in new places and the desert outside of L.A. is also one of our favorite places. And ... the Dennis Hopper award personally moved me. In UCLA film school in 1967 Dennis was in a somewhat notorious movie I photographed and we remained friends. He was, to say the least, a very interesting guy. New Coachella Valley Festival Amfm (Art, Music, Film and More) wrapped its inaugural outing with an awards ceremony held at the Buddy Rogers Theatre in Cathedral “Cat” City on June 17. Festival organizers Rich Henrich and Rob Galarza of Film 4 Change gave awards in several categories from among the 108 total entries in the festival:

Best Film went to Gary King’s film How To Write A Joe Schermann Song and the festival accepted on his behalf.

Best Documentary Award went to American Road, directed by Kurt Jacobsen and Warren Leming. The film, which “delves into the artistic, musical and literary resonances of the mystique of the road – and especially of veering off the beaten track - in American lore,” made its world premiere at the Festival. Accepting the award was Ed Asner who narrated parts of the film. He said, “I am truly honored they chose it--particularly because it’s in a festival Viggo won an award in—and I am a great admirer of his. As for American Road, take a lesson from it. It is a beautiful piece of work.”

Best Feature went to Slamdance award winner Joy De V, by Nadia Szold.

Best Short went to Jason Guy McLagan for Elegy For Eden, which also screened at Slamdance. Accepting the award, he said “Thank you for being here. I don’t have anything else to say. Thank you."

Best Music Video was, Loneley, by Alethea Root for the artist Azhia. She said, “I really won an award? Thanks y’all, it was locally produced and shot here in the desert.”

Best Director went to Tony Glazer, director of Junction, which also world premiered at the Festival. He said, “Thanks for the honor of this award and for having the film in this festival; this is everything indie filmmakers want to be a part of. They say it takes a village. Well, it takes a small nation army to make a film and I am indebted to them—the actors, the crew, and even the financiers. This film would not be what it is without their involvement.”

Matthew Millan’s We Win Or We Die won the award for best short documentary. He remarked, “Thanks for having us. Thanks to the Libyan people and to my own stupidity for going there. People are still suffering there in Benghazi and that’s what this is all about.”

Special Jury Award was presented to Joseph Laraja’s comedy about a Northeastern seafood cook-off, The Golden Scallop. Laraja said, “This is a complete thrill all the way around—everyone has been lovely and it’s a tremendous honor."

The Wally Award for is given by a panel of judges to San Diego State University students. Students come in and pitch a film idea. Winners get an award and cash but most of all they gain the confidence to make it in this industry. The award is conferred by UltraStar Cinemas VP Wally Schlotter.

For Spring 2013 the award went to Plain White Tee. Director/ Producer Devin Dolan said, “What a great learning experience. A good experience our first festival. Thanks to our actors and crew and friends and family.”

The Festival presented a Best No-Show to His Own Poetry Reading to actor Michael Madsen—who was of course unavailable to receive it. His schedule reading at the Ace Hotel Saturday night didn’t deter the audience, who rose up and turned the evening into an impromptu poetry slam—reading their own work as well as Madsen’s and other poets’. Amazingly, about half the audience had their own material handy, including Junction’s Neil Bledsoe, and director Alex Kleinert, who read a poem about wild horses based on his Festival film Wild Horses And Renegades.

Johnny Dowers, FX’s The Bridge star, presented two awards. First was the Cinephile Award. It went to the individual who went to the most events, who volunteered and assisted and who generally “helped make it happen.” This award went to David Gardener. He received a bag of Festival swag labeled “I Got Swag.” “He said, “I have no idea what I am doing up here but I am happy about it.”

The Film 4 Change Humanitarian Award went to Ellen Jefferson for her immigrations documentary The Second Cooler. She said, “I am so excited I want to cry. Thanks to the festival for including me, thanks to Tyler Snyder (her web designer) for encouraging me. Corporate greed…I can’t go into all of that now. I hope this film can give a lot of people so much hope. People who are waiting to make that crossing, people who have been deported, a lot of hope for those that have had to follow their deported loved ones into exile and want to be reunited. “

Film 4 Change recognized a photographer with the Film 4 Change Photographer of the Year Award, which went to Craig Semetko. Henrich said, “His work captures moments in the American spirit. Wherever he goes in the world, his lens follows it and captures it.” Semetko in turn thanked the organizers. “They worked tirelessly, sleeplessly. Now it’s officially a tradition. I think about how I got started taking photographs. It was a desire to tell people’s stories. As an actor, I have been a people watcher my entire life. Maybe with a camera I can tell stories in a different medium.” He exhorted the crowd, “Be true to yourself and remember that kernel of passion that started you on your path to creativity. Keep that thing that fed your soul to begin with. Be authentic.”

Finally Henrich and Galarza honored acclaimed actor and artist Viggo Mortensen with the Dennis Lee Hopper Award.

Mortensen is the fourth artist to receive the award, named for (and originally presented to) renegade renaissance man Dennis Hopper. Film 4 Change previously bestowed the award to Dean Stockwell and Alex Cox at the Albuquerque Film Festival. Amfm embraces the sprit of Hopper and the Festival’s motto: hip, cool, funny, strange, social change. “We are a community of artists committed to having pride in what we do and dedicated to making our country great through artistic and creative innovation,” Henrich said.

Here’s some excerpts from Mortensen on accepting the award: “it’s a hell of an honor due to its connection to Dennis, with that it couldn’t be more meaningful to me. “I’ve been to some awards programs that are a load of self-important crap compared to this. Thank you. I look forward to future festivals—this is a great idea and it will grow and grow, I am sure it will. Thanks to Jared Davis, Hugh Millstein, and Digital Fusion Los Angeles; more is going to be inflicted on you on screen [in a montage of art and poetry that followed the presentation].”

He continued, “[It was] kind of hard to pick from thousands of images, something that was concise enough that feels the connection that comes across that that I have with Dennis and his work. There’s something about Dennis and what he means to lots of artists.

“Dennis Hopper was not generally thought to be a recluse or hermit. He managed to share moments of creativity and wild excess with others. He was socially active by nature, and always curious about people. But he also emphasized that to be an engaged, conscious artists is to essentially be alone, to come to terms with mysteries we all have to face. The absurd side of being alive can be the source of joy. He used laughter; he used it as an important weapon against darkness. The joke was always on him, with laughter—he looked for a joke to make one and to be one, but valued fearlessness and curiosity in others.”

Mortensen concluded by reading a poem read when Hopper got his star on Hollywood Boulevard, a poem by Hopper’s fellow Kansan William Stafford: For My Young Friends Who Are Afraid.

There is a country to cross you will

find in the corner of your eye, in

the quick slip of your foot–air far

down, a snap that might have caught.

And maybe for you, for me, a high, passing

voice that finds its way by being

afraid. That country is there, for us,

carried as it is crossed. What you fear

will not go away: it will take you into

yourself and bless you and keep you.

That’s the world, and we all live there.

Amfm Fest ran June 13 -16, 2013 at the UltraStar Mary Pickford Theater, the Cathedral City Town Square and other select desert venues. Film 4 Change’s mission is to bring communities together through the power of story and the art of laughter while showcasing the best emerging talent and thought leaders in art, music, film, photography and comedy. The Festival features six world premiere films (more than 50 in all), dozens of live shows, comedy, fine art, spoken word, seminars, a Celebrity Indy Kart Race and more. Other celebrity guests ranged from Ed Asner, Jason London, Jason Mewes, David Zayas, and Tinsel Korey to filmmakers Monte Hellman, Adrian Belic, Gary King, Jesse Baget and even the Coachella Valley’s own Christian Sesma.

Twi-Fight! Breaking Down the 'Twilight' Character Tourney
MTV's "Twi-Fight" is about to begin, and we don't just mean the Cullens finally facing those pesky Volturi types in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Sixty-four of our favorite vampires, werewolves, humans and hybrids are throwing down in an intra-fandemonium MTV tournament to decide once and for all which "Twilight" character is the very favorite among Twi-hards.

It's a stone cold battle in the making, and while Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella (Kristen Stewart) and/or Jacob (Taylor Lautner) are the most obvious favorites, there may be some other stiff competitors in this thing yet. Let's break it down.

Frontrunners

There's no question that the "Twi-o" — or "Twifecta," if you will — have a solid lead on the rest. The entire series has revolved around them, and the emotional attachment of the fan community to these three is unquestionable. Between them, Edward's got that immortal swoon factor going for him,...

Toronto Film Festival 2012: Walter Salles Working on New On The Road Cut
On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Just one day after speaking to Tinsel Korey about her very first Ep (set to come out on August 30!) the news of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's cheating scandal surfaced. Granted, we would have asked, but Tinsel and the rest of the cast are too nice and private to talk about such gossip. Ugh, guess we can't blame them.

In any case, we got some scoop about Tinsel's thoughts about the Twilight Saga ending come this November, and what it was like to play Emily in the series! Many Twihards will probably be upset when the Breaking Dawn: Part 2 credits begin to scroll, but it will also be exciting to follow the actors careers throughout other projects too. Just like so many already, Tinsel is moving on to other jobs and staying busy with her music career. Read on to see what her plans...

'Breaking Dawn' Star Tinsel Korey On Her Debut Ep, Singing On Set
You may recognize Tinsel Korey as Sam's scarred girlfriend Emily in the hit Twilight Saga franchise, but now fans have the chance to see her in a whole new light, and perhaps even on a stage in the next couple of months. Korey, who's absolutely wonderful to speak with and extremely talented, chatted with me recently about her music and upcoming release. Music has always been a passion for the talented actress, and now all of her hardwork has paid off with her very first Ep!

No bias needed, Korey's music is absolutely beautiful and my iTunes is ready to make some downloads. "Love Me Let You Go," "Break of Dawn" and "I Surrender" are just some of her songs that will leave a lasting impression.

Ology: New Ep comes out at the end of August! When did you know you wanted to get serious about singing?

'Twilight' Actor Chaske Spencer Talks Charity Work And His NYC Photo Exhibition
We all know Chaske Spencer as Sam Uley, the hunky, deep-voiced werewolf pack leader in the Twilight Saga films. Yes, he’s tall, dark and handsome, but there’s also a lot more to this actor than the Twilight world probably knows. In addition to rubbing elbows with Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and the rest of the gang, Chaske’s Ologies are quite broad, from charity work to photography.

Although his role as Sam has catapulted him to fame in a short period of time, Spencer has used the bright hot spotlight in many positive ways: he’s the spokesperson for United Global Shift, a charity designed to create learning programs for people trying to make a difference and co-founder of the Be The Shift Campaign. The campaign aims to promote action and charity work throughout the country. It’s obvious that Spencer is an extremely passionate person; not only about acting,...

Bruised Kristen Stewart: Bella Hunting/Breaking Dawn 2
Kristen Stewart tumbled? Life imitates art once again. At the end of Twilight, Bella Swan goes to the prom wearing a cast. In order to dance, she must climb on top of Edward Cullen’s feet, so he can sway to the music for both of them. Well, it turns out that Bella herself, Kristen Stewart, has hurt her foot while working on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 reshoots, or "pickup shots" or "additional shots" or whatever you want to call them. On Friday, Stewart told The Tonight Show’s Jay Leno that the additional work on Breaking Dawn 2, which took place in Vancouver this past week, was mostly focused on the hunting sequences in the beginning of the film. Bella’s hunting scenes to be exact. (Please scroll down to watch the Kristen Stewart / Jay Leno video.) Remember, Bella was transformed into a vampire at the end of...

From around the web: 'Twilight' links and things
Tinsel Korey
This week's "From around the web" feature will be pretty concise. First up, Tinsel Korey ("Emily Young" in the Twilight Saga) is featured in this month's installment of Troix Magazine. For those of you who don't know much about Korey, her interview for that publication is a great way to catch up on what she's all about. You can read it and see a slew of gorgeous photos here. Next, attached in the video section is that Audi Super Bowl commercial that's been making the rounds. This hasn't been addressed here yet, and here's why: Despite what's being said about it, it's not Twilight-inspired. It's vampire-inspired. Twilight's vampires so famously do not sizzle in the sunlight, number one, and secondly, they do not have fangs. Still, one could argue that the popularity of the vampire genre can be attributed to Twilight, along with True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, so...

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Exclusive: 'Breaking Dawn - Part 1' Quileute actresses (premiere)
Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Today, I'll begin rolling out my premiere coverage (in partnership with Twilight Facebook) from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, starting with two actresses from the La Push persuasion, Tinsel Korey ("Emily Young") and Alex Rice ("Sue Clearwater"). These two portray characters who've suffered losses resulting from their significant others mythological make-up, but Korey and Rice seem to find that their on-screen personas represent hope and strength . . . Korey also talked about her strong relationship with Twilight fans, via Twitter and convention appearances, and Rice talked about working with Billy Burke ("Charlie Swan") in this installment of the Saga. ....

Tinsel Korey Talks Breaking Dawn, On-Set Bloopers, and Jean Shorts [Video] Exclusive
Breaking Dawn - Part 1 answers a lot of questions — can humans have vampire babies, what the heck is "imprinting," and are jean shorts sexy?

Tinsel Korey, who plays Emily, Sam Uley's fiancée, talked with Reelz about her character in Breaking Dawn.

Emily’s job in Breaking Dawn is to basically sort of piss off Leah. And to basically to make Leah as jealous as possible.

Korey also talks about one particular on-set blooper when the cast broke out into a choreographed dance during an intense scene with The Volturi. She also answers the age-old question: Are cutoff jean shorts sexy?

Next Showing: Breaking Dawn is in theaters now

'Breaking Dawn' Convention Diary: Male Twi-Hard's Newest Man Crushes
Not to sound like an old sea captain, but I've been covering entertainment since before you could swim. To be fair, some of you may be 40 and still can't swim -- I'm not judging. Sorry, it was just a some flashy language to get this second "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" Convention Diary post started.

Here's the rub: I've been interviewing celebrities for over 10 years. And what I've learned from interacting with celebrities like Tom Cruise, Vince Vaughn and Jaime Pressly is they're not always people you would want to hang out with if they weren't rich and famous. Coincidentally, those three names I just mentioned were actually surprisingly cool, but others, not so much.

The roundabout point I'm trying to make is that a number of the "Twilight" actors I've seen this weekend seem like dudes I'd like to call on Sunday for football. Let's be honest, they're all insanely rich by now,...

Stained and Too Much Time in the Spin Cycle : A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Gravitas Ventures.

**here be spoilers.

Director/writer: Karen Lam.

Stained is an indie picture developed from three different production companies (Angel Entertainment, Opiate Pictures, Goonworks Films). This is director Karen Lam's first feature. And while the first two thirds of the film is struggling to finds its legs, the final third makes up for some slow pacing earlier. There are a few surprises here as well. The only question is: will viewers be able to make it all the way to the end? Stained has just been released this month on video-on-demand and this reviewer would only give this film a tepid recommend.

The story focuses almost exclusively and to its own detriment on Isabelle (Tinsel Korey). Isabelle is a youngish woman who owns a small bookstore in what looks like Saskatoon, Sk, based on this reviewer's travels there.

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Tinsel Korey Talks Differences in Filming ‘New Moon’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’
Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
We just heard from Tinsel Korey last week as she discussed what it was like to resume her character Emily, in Breaking Dawn. Now Moviefone is back with a new interview with Tinsel, where she talks about the differences in filming New Moon and Breaking Dawn, Twilight fans and her busy career. Read more below:

How has the dynamic on set changed between ‘New Moon’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’? Was everyone more relaxed and comfortable with each other?

We see each other at ‘Twilight’ conventions and stuff like that, so we’ve gotten to interact a lot more than you would on another movie where it finishes and you don’t see each other. So that strengthened our bond as a wolf pack unit. You could definitely tell that the movie had changed, as in the budget and the level of movie. When we were filming ‘New Moon’ the hype was really just starting to pick up and I think that ‘Twilight’ had just been released internationally, so it wasn’t the crazy hoopla that it is right now. Obviously that was intensified by ‘Eclipse,’ and then ‘Breaking Dawn’ was another level.

That’s really interesting. Are there any tangible examples you can think of? For example, were you having caviar at the craft services table or anything crazy like that?

[Laughs] Nothing crazy like that, because obviously they want to spend the funds on making the best movie possible. There’s more people. The security was really intense, because we’ve had incidents. Like on ‘Eclipse’ these fans somehow made it onto set. It was actually kind of funny because they obviously had the plan to make it on to set, but then they didn’t know what to do when they got on set. So they were standing there and the crew and all of us are staring at them staring at us and everyone’s like so … what now? [Laughs] So security was definitely bumped up.

Read the full interview at Moviefone here.

'Twilight''s Beautifully Scarred Tinsel Korey on Filming 'Breaking Dawn'
Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, The Twilight Saga, Moviefone Canada

You know her as Emily, Sam's beautifully scarred fiancee in the 'Twilight' movies, but you probably wouldn't recognize Tinsel Korey walking down the street. While her 'Twilight' co-stars are constantly fawned over by diehard fans, Korey says that she can walk around incognito, since her character is somewhat disguised by the bangs and the scar.

Beyond 'Twilight,' Korey is best known as an indie movie queen. She garnered accolades for her role as Blue Girl in Carl Bessai's 'Unnatural & Accidental.' She's poised to wow audiences again in 'Stained,' which is being released on DVD on Aug. 30. This time around, she channels her inner dark side to play a schizophrenic serial killer.

Despite all of her serious roles, Korey is actually quite a goofball. She'll have a chance to showcase her silly side in the upcoming flick 'Fishing Naked,...

Tinsel Korey Describes Playing Emily in ‘Breaking Dawn’
Tinsel Korey
Australia’s Girl.com recently had the chance to ask Tinsel Korey a few questions about both Breaking Dawn and her other upcoming work including Fishing Naked and Stained. Here Tinsel describes what it was like to resume the character of Emily Young for Breaking Dawn and how the makeup experience differed from that of New Moon and Eclipse. Read more below:

You were cast as Emily Young, the fiancée of Sam Uley over 800 other actresses. How did you react when you were told you had been cast?

Tinsel Korey: I was really excited. Especially since I thought I hadn’t done well on the audition. But I’m also my toughest critic.

The character, Emily is scarred from a previous incident with Sam Uley; can you talk about the time you spent in make up preparing for your role in the Twilight Saga movies.

Tinsel Korey: We had different make up teams for the different movies. For New Moon the make up took three – four hours on the day; because we had two test days. For Eclipse they had to do the make up on set and try to match the first teams job, so it ending up taking eight hours, then five hours, then they got it down to three hours. Then in Breaking Dawn they had a new type of scar material, and it only took two hours. It is quite a process for sure.

Were you sad to say goodbye to filming the Twilight Saga when you finished part 1 of Breaking Dawn?

Tinsel Korey: Of course, it’s a chapter in your life ending. I remember being at dinner with everyone, and was like “Are we all still going to be friends after this ends?”

How has your life changed since being cast in the Twilight Saga?

Tinsel Korey: I guess the amount of attention I get has changed. But how I perceive my reality hasn’t, I always remember to stay humble. As fast as something is given to you, it can be taken away just as fast!

In the movie you are a motherly figure to Sam Uley’s werewolf pack, how are you similar to the character of Emily Young?

Tinsel Korey: I take care of the boys the same way. Always acting like the big sister, and making sure they’re okay.
