Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

There were sunny skies over the Thessaloniki Film Festival this week, with unseasonably high temperatures leading many visitors to reach for the sunscreen while dashing between movie premieres and industry events at Greece’s longest-running film fest.
The local industry, too, is enjoying a moment in the sun, as the Mediterranean nation has seen production surge post-pandemic, buoyed by foreign titles like Rian Johnson’s Netflix blockbuster “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” action thriller “Tin Soldier,” starring Jamie Foxx and Robert De Niro, and the Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone starring “Expend4bles,” the latest installment of the action franchise, which filmed in Thessaloniki.
Last year, production in Greece reached record heights, with 132 projects supported by the country’s cashback scheme, which covers up to 40% of qualifying expenditures and can be combined with a separate 30% tax relief scheme. This year, Pablo Larrain’s Maria Callas biopic “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie,...

Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. The 1972 film remained blacklisted in the UK, where it was banned for nearly 30 years (finally seeing an uncut release in 2008). In 2006 Rogue Pictures made the shock announcement that Craven had agreed to produce a remake of his film. At the time, many people, myself included, were worried that any remake would have to be watered down for modern audiences – especially when the majority of horror remakes at the time were being released as PG-13. If you wanted to gauge how far the growing Greek TV industry has come in just a few short years, you’d have to look no further than last month in Lille, France, where Series Mania offered a splashy showcase for the Mediterranean nation’s sudden rise.
The prestigious French fest opened with Amazon Prime Video’s “Greek Salad,” director Cédric Klapisch’s follow-up to his beloved “Spanish Apartment” trilogy that chose Athens as the setting for its portrait of contemporary Europe at a crossroads. Meanwhile, a Greek series bowed in the festival’s international competition for the first time: Vasilis Kekatos’ “Milky Way.”
Directed by the short film Palme d’Or winner and inviting comparisons to “Euphoria” from festivalgoers, the envelope-pushing teen drama (pictured) is part of a bold new wave of Greek storytelling that reflects an industry striving to reach new heights. “We have amazing talents in Greece.

For a country of 11 million that’s spent much of the past decade lurching from one economic crisis to the next, you’d be hard-pressed to suggest the Greek film industry isn’t punching above its weight. In the span of just a few weeks earlier this year, Rian Johnson’s Netflix blockbuster “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” became one of the streaming service’s most-watched films of all time, while Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” was nominated for three Academy Awards: two splashy productions that were both shot in the Mediterranean nation.

If any author to have existed within our lifetime can lay claim to having a fair amount of their work adapted to cinema, it’s most definitely Stephen King. Granted, his books are amazing in their own right, but there’s something doubly cool about seeing them brought to life.
Of course, Mr. King is just like the rest of us when you get down to it, as he does enjoy taking in a good movie when he has the free time to spare. And when it comes to a mind such as his, it’s expected that folks be curious to learn which flicks he digs most.
Believe it or not, no less than 22 recommendations have been given by the legendary scribe in recent interviews. So without further ado, here they are:
The Autopsy of Jane Doe – André Øvredal, 2016
The Blair Witch Project – Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, 1999

*there are some mild spoilers here. Director: Dennis Iliadis. Writer: Adam Alleca. Cast: Topher Grace, Genesis Rodriguez, Patricia Clarkson. Carl Jung was a depth psychologist from Kesswill, Switzerland. Mentored by Sigmund Freud, Jung would develop his own psychological concepts such as the collective unconscious, individuation, shadow work and many others. In Dennis Iliadis and Adam Alleca's Delirium, there are a number of psychological elements that emerge from the very troubled protagonist, Thomas (Topher Grace). Without his medications, all sorts of characters begin to appear on-screen, from his unconscious, like: his Shadow (as Alex), his Anima (as Lynn) and still further characters, late in the film. Delirium is an interesting picture for including so many examples of Jung's research and work. According to Jung, the integration of the shadow is "apprentice-work" and facing the Anima is "master-work" (Scott). However, the character Thomas begins in the middle (Anima) and...

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Yvonne Strahovski, star of NBC’s Chuck, has entered talks to join the cast of The Predator, Shane Black’s R-rated reboot that officially fired up production in Vancouver earlier in the week.
Negotiations are ongoing, according to THR, but assuming a deal sticks, Strahovski would join the likes of Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Moonlight‘s Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen, Olivia Munn and definitely not Arnold Schwarzenegger – shoehorning his Dutch into the plot would only take audiences out of the experience, according to Holbrook.
In more positive news, the Logan star has hinted that Shane Black is rustling up something “totally different” with The Predator, as the illustrious writer-director looks to relocate the iconic alien onto the streets of suburbia. It’ll feature multiple extraterrestrials, too, leading Holbrook’s Special Forces commando Quinn McKenna to rally...

As I’ve mentioned a few times already this year, horror is a genre that doesn’t get a whole lot of respect. The same goes for remakes in general, so when you discuss horror remakes, you can expect a distant lack of appreciation. Still, there are some gems to be found, and with the release this weekend of a Poltergeist remake, I wanted to count down the best that this sub-genre has to offer. You might think that there’s a complete dearth of quality, but I was able to find a solid handful of titles that make for a more than respectable lineup. Here now are the ten best horror remakes of all time: 10. Halloween – Not an incredibly popular choice, I know, but my heart has a soft spot within it for this one. I’m honestly not sure why, but I jived with what musician turned writer...

After deftly handling supporting roles in action fare like Man on a Ledge and The Last Stand, actress Genesis Rodriguez is set to make her mark as a scream queen in the upcoming Blumhouse thriller Home.
The actress will star alongside Topher Grace in the thriller, which centers on a man (Grace) who inherits a creepy old mansion from his parents and begins to believe that it is haunted. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that he’s right, and lots of horrifying supernatural events ensue. It has not been confirmed which character Rodriguez will be playing in Home, though I imagine that she’ll be taking on the role of the love interest of Grace’s protagonist.
Though the actress hasn’t showcased a particularly impressive set of dramatic chops to date, I also didn’t mind her performances in last year’s Hours or Identity Thief.

Topher Grace has been cast in a new haunted house thriller called Home, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. All we know about the story at this point is that it follows "a man who suspects the mansion he inherited from his parents is haunted." And guess what? It is! After all, what would be the point of making a horror movie if the house wasn't actually haunted?
Dennis Iliadis (The Last House of the Left) is set to direct the movie and Patricia Clarkson is in negotiations to co-star alongside Grace.
I really haven't seen Grace around lately. The last movie that I saw him in was Predators back in 2010. He's done some stuff since then, but I haven't seen any of them. He does have a role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar, though.

Sometimes the most-used formulas are the most-used for a reason. A prime example of that is haunted house movies. No matter how many we’ve seen over the years, there’s still always something unsettling about the thought of having a ghost for a roommate. In recent years, few have used that formula better than Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, and they’re going to try to do it at least one more time with Home, which now has Topher Grace attached to star.
Adam Alleca’s script focuses on a man who inherits a mansion from his deceased parents after being released from a mental institution. After a series of disturbing events, he begins to think the giant house is haunted. The film will be directed by Dennis Iliadis, who’s best known for the remake of The Last House On The Left in 2009, and will co-star Patricia Clarkson.
