Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Poff) has selected a further 14 features, including 11 world premieres, to complete the lineup of its Official Selection Competition.

The new titles include the world premiere of Serhii Kastornykh’s Ukrainian feature The Mousetrap. Shot during a break between Kastornykh’s military service periods, the film follows a soldier trapped alone in a bunker on the frontline of the Russian war.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There were sunny skies over the Thessaloniki Film Festival this week, with unseasonably high temperatures leading many visitors to reach for the sunscreen while dashing between movie premieres and industry events at Greece’s longest-running film fest.

Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. Horror has been receiving a lot of love on 4K over the last number of years. Not only have popular classics like Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre gotten new ghoulish editions, but hidden gems like The Slumber Party Massacre and Dead Silence have gotten their time to shine as well. Now the latest horror film to get the 4K treatment thanks to Arrow Video is the 2009 remake of The Last House on the Left. Directed by Dennis Iliadis, the film was a remake of Wes Craven’s 1972 horror story of the same name which is widely considered to be one of the most controversial films ever made.

Five years ago, Arrow Video gave a two-disc limited edition Blu-ray release to writer/director Wes Craven’s 1972 feature debut The Last House on the Left. Arrow Video announced their August 2023 releases this morning, and included in the mix is a brand new limited edition Blu-ray release of 2009’s The Last House on the Left.

The film, a modern day remake of Wes Craven’s grimy exploitation classic, was directed by Dennis Iliadis. Many, including Stephen King, consider it better than the original.

Rlje Films has acquired the North American rights to the thriller “The Owners,” starring Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Jake Curran, Ian Kenny, Andrew Ellis, Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham.

The film is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD in the fall of 2020. Julius Berg made his feature directorial debut with “The Owners” from a script he co-wrote with Matthieu Gompel with the participation of Geoff Cox.

Coming off raves for his performance in "10 Cloverfield Lane," John Goodman has been cast as former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis in CBS Films and Lionsgate's 2013 Boston Marathon bombing thriller "Patriots Day".

The Peter Berg-helmed film chronicles the events surrounding the bombing. Mark Wahlberg plays a Boston cop central to the investigation and manhunt to find the bombers. J.K. Simmons also stars in the film which opens December 21st. [Source: Variety]

Deadline reports that Hannah Kasulka has been added to The Exorcist TV series to play Casey Rance, a relatively unnoticed member of the family who is concerned about the well-being of her sister, who doesn’t like to leave her room after suffering an intense accident. Brianne Howey (Scream Queens) was recently cast as the suffering sister, Charlotte—a character who could be possessed.

As I’ve mentioned a few times already this year, horror is a genre that doesn’t get a whole lot of respect. The same goes for remakes in general, so when you discuss horror remakes, you can expect a distant lack of appreciation. A remake of Alfred Hitchcock's tale of avian terror has been rumored and talked about since way back in 2007, but it's been quite some time since we've heard anything about it. Now it looks like The Birds reboot is back on track. Read on for details!

Variety reports that Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures have tapped Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen (Taped) to direct a modern day version of The Birds, replacing previously attached directors Martin Campbell and Dennis Iliadis.

After deftly handling supporting roles in action fare like Man on a Ledge and The Last Stand, actress Genesis Rodriguez is set to make her mark as a scream queen in the upcoming Blumhouse thriller Home.

The actress will star alongside Topher Grace in the thriller, which centers on a man (Grace) who inherits a creepy old mansion from his parents and begins to believe that it is haunted. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that he’s right, and lots of horrifying supernatural events ensue. It has not been confirmed which character Rodriguez will be playing in Home, though I imagine that she’ll be taking on the role of the love interest of Grace’s protagonist.

Though the actress hasn’t showcased a particularly impressive set of dramatic chops to date, I also didn’t mind her performances in last year’s Hours or Identity Thief.

If you count "Kid," tonight's casting report features a great group of first names. Holliday Grainger is in negotiations to star opposite Christoph Waltz in the period romance Tulip Fever, directed by Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom). Kid Cudi has joined the cast of the Entourage movie, written and directed by series creator Doug Ellin. Topher Grace has been cast in a new haunted house thriller called Home, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. All we know about the story at this point is that it follows "a man who suspects the mansion he inherited from his parents is haunted." And guess what? It is! After all, what would be the point of making a horror movie if the house wasn't actually haunted? 

Dennis Iliadis (The Last House of the Left) is set to direct the movie and Patricia Clarkson is in negotiations to co-star alongside Grace. 

I really haven't seen Grace around lately. The last movie that I saw him in was Predators back in 2010. He's done some stuff since then, but I haven't seen any of them. He does have a role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar, though.

Sometimes the most-used formulas are the most-used for a reason. A prime example of that is haunted house movies. No matter how many we’ve seen over the years, there’s still always something unsettling about the thought of having a ghost for a roommate.
