After claiming four César awards, including best picture, and a Cannes jury prize with 2019’s “Les Misérables,” and co-producing last year’s Venice winner “Happening,” rising producers Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral have set for themselves, and for their follow-up feature, an altogether different task: Paving a new path for Quebecois talent into the French mainstream.
Co-written and directed by Nadège Loiseau (“A Bun in the Oven”), produced by Ayadi and Barral through their Srab Films banner in partnership with France 2 Cinema and Canada’s Possibles Media, and with France’s Le Pacte handling international sales, the upcoming feature “Three Times Nothing” shares much in common with traditional Gallic fare as it plucks a popular comedic star into a socially-minded story about three homeless men and a winning lottery ticket.

Paris-based Le Pacte has closed a raft of sales on Olivier Peyon’s “Tokyo Shaking” and Nadine Loiseau’s “Three Times Nothing,” both of which are screening at the Berlin Festival’s virtual European Film Market.
A hot title on Le Pacte’s slate, “Tokyo Shaking” sold to Germany and Austria (Zdf), Israel (New Cinema), Canada (Axia Films), Spain (Alfa Pictures) and the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Mediasquad).
“Tokyo Shaking” is set on March 11, 2011, when Japan was hit by the biggest tsunami it had ever experienced, leading to the Fukushima disaster. While risks are being officially downplayed, the foreign community in Tokyo is terrified by this tragic event and no one is capable of assessing its scope.
The film stars Karin Viard (pictured) as Alexandra, a French executive newly arrived from Hong-Kong to work in a bank, who has to face this nuclear crisis amid pervading terror and chaos.

Antoine Bertrand, Philippe Rebbot and Côme Levin are hobos who win the lottery in this Srab Films production, set to be sold by Le Pacte. The first clapperboard slammed today on Trois fois rien, the second feature film by Nadège Loiseau following 2016’s A Bun in the Oven. The director is, moreover, reuniting with three actors from this first opus of hers: the Canadian Antoine Bertrand, Philippe Rebbot and Côme Levin (likewise enjoyed in Step By Step).Written by Nadège Loiseau and Niels Rahou, the story revolves around three hobos: Brindille, Casquette and La Flèche. Every Tuesday, Brindille and Casquette play the lottery. They lose, but, for a brief moment, they allow themselves to dream. This Tuesday,...

The French-language release had the biggest local opening in a decade.
After a year in which Quebec films saw their share of Canadian box office dollars decline, French-language comedy Menteur (Compulsive Liar) has bucked the trend and taken more than $3.8m (Cad $5m) after five weeks in Canadian cinemas.
According to distributor Les Films Séville, the film’s five-day opening gross of $903,000 (Cad $1.2m), from around 100 screens, was the best opening for a Quebec film in Canada since the release of action comedy De père en flic (Father and Guns) in 2009.

In a year that saw François Delisle’s Le météore (Sundance and Berlin Film Festival accepted film) receive no love (zero nominations), and Denis Côté’s critically well-received Vic + Flo Saw a Bear was perhaps too askew for the voting clique (it did grab best Actress for Quebec’s “Melissa Leo” in Pierrette Robitaille), it was a bigger than life biopic by helmer Daniel Roby that flexed its muscles, beating out the comp. The high gloss Louis Cyr won in several tech categories and it’s strongman Antoine Bertrand won for Best Actor. Considered the favorite to win the top prize, Gabrielle was awarded the Best Director and Screenplay awards for Louise Archambault. Oddly, that film received no Best Actress consideration while it did net Gabrielle Marion-Rivard a Best Actress win at Canadian Screen Awards. Here are the noms and winners of the 16th edition.

The instant problem when a new remake is released is the inevitable comparisons to the original film. I had never watched Starbuck in its entirety, but knew more than enough about it when it was announced that original co-writer/director Ken Scott would be remaking the French-Canadian film in English. But that begs the question: would it really be necessary to examine the original work before watching the new one, or would it be more appropriate to watch the new film on its own first? In the case of Delivery Man, it may have been better to not watch the original first.
David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn) is a bit of a loser. He delivers meat for his family’s butcher shop, he owes $80,000 to shady characters, and his girlfriend Emma (Cobie Smulders) is pregnant. If that wasn’t bad enough, David finds out that a mix-up with sperm donations he...

The Americanization of Fertility: Scott’s Sterile Remake a Stale Venture
With Delivery Man, which is a remake of his 2011 French Canadian hit, Starbuck, director Ken Scott joins an elite group of filmmakers, such as Michael Haneke and George Sluizer, who have taken on the responsibility of directing English language remakes of their own prolific titles. Though these carbon copies, while even from the same authorial voices, are often subpar when compared to the first film, it often seems a protective and intriguing gesture. But even for those unfamiliar with Scott’s first film, which was just as ridiculous but managed to muster a reasonable amount of hangdog charm to coast by, there’s an unmistakable taste of canned inspiration at the center here, a tired formula that lazily regurgitates itself into the ill-fitting dress of the Hollywood star system.

Les 4 soldats
Written by Robert Morin and Hubert Mingarelli
Directed by Robert Morin
Canada, 2013
There are war films and then there are war films. The former are of the traditional variety that follow an individual or group of soldiers that form a platoon and train, learn to grow as a team and then suffer the inevitable consequences of battle. The latter follow a different battle plan, pardon the pun. Their interests lie in the more esoteric, psychological aspects of warfare, studying the toil combat takes on everyone affected by it, either directly or otherwise. Robert Morin’s latest endeavor, Les 4 soldats, initially appears to adopt the first of those two identities only to slowly calm its pace down and become a studious character piece.
As explained in the opening narrative, civil war has ravaged the country. When the disproportion of poor people to wealthy people reached an unsustainable extreme,...

When a story gets out about a Canadian man who has fathered 533 children through sperm donations, the news travels fast, even to Japan, as we can see in our exclusive deleted scene from Starbuck, currently available on DVD. Patrick Huard stars as David Wozniak, who used the code name Starbuck when he made numerous sperm donations in his youth. Those deposits come back to haunt him, though, when it is learned that 142 of the 533 children he anonymously sired through those donations want to meet him. Take a look at our exclusive scene, before picking up director Ken Scott's comedy on DVD
David Wozniak (Patrick Huard) may not be the ideal father figure, but his journey to becoming a (re)productive member of society has won over critics and audiences in the heartwarming comedy Starbuck, the original movie that inspired DreamWorks' upcoming Delivery Man, arriving in theaters this November starring Vince Vaughn and Chris Pratt.

With the Fantasia Festival only a day away from starting with a bang (a new Takashi Miike film, in this case Shield of Straw, will always have film buffs drooling), the anticipation amongst genre film fanatics in La Belle Province’s metropole is palpable, unbearable one might say. Not quite as insufferable as the 40 degrees Celsius courtesy of the humidity blanketing the city over the past week or so, but pretty darn close. Thankfully, as of Thursday July 18th, movie goers will be able to cool off inside theatre rooms and watch some quality genre fair.
Speaking of anticipation and quality films, it feels like the right time to count down some movies of particular interest playing at this year’s edition just as the clock continues to count down until Thursday evening. Reading the following list, it is very easy to ask questions along the lines of ‘Where is The World’s End?...

Louis Cyr: L’homme le plus fort du monde (English title: Louis Cyr)
Written by Sylvain Guy
Directed by Daniel Roby
Canada, 2013
People become legends in the annals of history for all sorts of reasons. They might have been great inventors, intellectuals, soldiers, artists, political leaders, activists or, arguably the sort of people who earn the admiration of the masses the most easily, athletes. Their impressive feats of physicality produce admiration, inspiration and courage, but do do their journeys, the stories of where they came from, especially when they hail from small, lesser known communities. Such was the case of champion weight lifter Louis Cyr from Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Québec, who was promoted as the strongest man in the world in the first decade of the 20th century. Director Daniel Roby and screenwriter Sylvain Guy have now translated the famous strongman’s story to the silver screen.

Patrick Huard stars as David Wozniak, a 42-year old lovable but perpetual screw up who finally decides to take control of his life. A habitual sperm donor in his youth, he discovers that he’s the biological father of 533 children, 142 of whom are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of the prolific donor code-named Starbuck.
Produced by André Rouleau, the film also stars Julie Le Breton, as David’s long suffering girlfriend who suddenly finds herself pregnant and understandably reluctant to share parenthood with the unreliable David, and Antoine Bertrand, David’s longtime friend, Paul, an attorney who takes on his case while trying to disabuse him of the joys of parenthood.
The new French comedy Starbuck opens in St. Louis on April 19th at Plaza Frontenac.

The feel-good movie is somewhat of an enigma when it comes to the end result. Collectively, so many share the same exact elements: ample schmaltz, the odd contrivance and an ending born straight out of a Disney cartoon. Yet while some work remarkably well, others simply come off as manipulative, pandering tripe. Thankfully in the case of Starbuck, its earnest nature, winning performances and wry humour assemble in a hugely palatable way, which helps it to become one of the more charming films I’ve seen in recent memory.
The title Starbuck comes from a pseudonym used by 40-something slacker David Wozniak (Patrick Huard). However, it just so happens that this particular alias was constructed for purposes of the professional self-pleasuring variety. Chicago – “You’ll believe a man can have 533 children” might be a better tagline than, “You’ll believe a man can fly.” The extremely funny new Canadian film “Starbuck” will not only make you a true believer, but also loudly professes a romantic and gooey refrain that is sometimes necessary in a cold, cynical world.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Right off the bat, “Starbuck” is a really funny film, even in a movie universe burnt out by the definition of funny. It takes the absurdist premise that youthful donations to a fertility clinic results in several hundred children, and riffs on it until virtually any commentary in the film regarding it produces a good laugh. It is also eventually and unabashedly sentimental about the whole scenario, and that might be a bit cloying, but the film earns the right by setting up the laughs beforehand. For hilarity and heart, this is the movie...

Light Roast: Scott’s Sophomore Success a Breezy Crowd Pleaser
Canadian filmmaker Ken Scott managed to make a funny and heartfelt crowd pleaser with his 2011 sophomore effort Starbuck, so it’s not much of a surprise that he’s helming the Vince Vaughn starring American remake of his Quebecois hit. Who knows what, if any, excessive changes will be made to the English language version, which will be known as The Delivery Man, but while this is an amicable film, the original is also conspicuously scatterbrained and without the gumption to make any real observations about its superficially daring premise.
Well known French Canadian actor and comedian Patrick Huard stars as David Wozniak, a 40-something ne’er-do-well that enjoys sports and lives off the family butcher business as a deliveryman. While his relationship with Valerie (Julie LeBreton) is tempered by his rampant inattentiveness, just as she announces she’s pregnant with his child,...

One man's choice to donate sperm hundreds of times has bizarre consequences in the first clip from the upcoming comedy Starbuck. David Wozniak (Patrick Huard) made a whopping 693 sperm deposits over the years, although he comes to learn that his "work" resulted in 533 children being born. 142 of those children want to meet their dear old dad, even though that shouldn't be possible because of the confidentiality agreements he signed each time. This scene shows David Wozniak meeting with his attorney Avocat (Antoine Bertrand), who doesn't seem to be taking the situation very seriously.

Starbuck comes to theaters March 22nd, 2013 and stars Patrick Huard, Julie LeBreton, Antoine Bertrand, Dominic Philie, Marc Bélanger, Igor Ovadis, David Michael, Patrick Martin. The film is directed by Ken Scott.

Did you ever think there could be funny times embedded in sperm donation? I guess, when you think about it, there could be the makings of a great comedy, seeing how a sperm donor could become the unknowing father to many, many children. The realization of that alone would make a great logline. Director Ken Scott realized that, and now his movie, “Starbuck” is coming to theaters via eOne Films March 29. The film stars Patrick Huard, Julie Le Breton and Antoine Bertrand in this crazy comedy about the perils of sperm donating: “Starbuck stars Patrick Huard as David Wosniak, a 42-year old lovable but perpetual screw up who finally [ Read More ]

End of Watch | Silver Linings Playbook | The House I Live In | Gambit | Cinema Komunisto | Starbuck | Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger! | First | Lawrence Of Arabia | Ninja Scroll
End of Watch (15)
(David Ayer, 2012, Us) Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick. 109 mins.
If there was anything left to do with buddy cop movies then this does it, adding a raw authenticity and almost Tarantino-esque banter to the proceedings. We're on patrol with an Lapd duo whose partnership verges on the homoerotic, and whose sense of duty knows no bounds – a big mistake when they come up against a Mexican cartel. It's exciting, fluent and heavy on the shaky-cam, but ultimately paints a simplistic world of heroic lawmen and caricatured bad guys.
Silver Linings Playbook (15)
(David O Russell, 2012, Us) Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro. 122 mins.
Against-type casting and unbalanced characters do much to disguise the conventional bones of this satisfying romantic drama.

Starbuck
Review by LondonFilmFan
Stars: Patrick Huard, Julie LeBreton, Antoine Bertrand, David Michael, Patrick Martin, Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse | Written by Ken Scott, Martin Petit | Directed by Ken Scott
One of the year’s best comedies is about to hit cinemas thanks to the French-Canadian duo of director Ken Scott and his co-screenwriter, comedian Martin Petit. In fact, the Montreal set Starbuck has been so well received on the festival circuit that Scott is currently helming the Hollywood re-make starring Vince Vaughn currently titled The Delivery Man. Yet, if there was ever a foreign feature in no need of an English language re-make, then Starbuck is it.
Patrick Huard is likable loser David Wozniak, who back during his Uni days in the 80s engaged in a certain kind of manual labour for extra income. Trading his splash for cash under the alias of “Starbuck”, David remains blissfully unaware of the seeds he has indirectly planted.

Released in Canada last year, the French-Canadian hit comedy, Starbuck, was received with brilliant reviews – you can read our review here – and has since prompted a Hollywood remake, starring Vince Vaughn, which is due out in Autumn 2013.
The original will be released here in the UK next Friday, and after catching the UK trailer last month, we’ve got an exclusive clip from the upcoming comedy to share.
“At 42, David lives the life of an irresponsible adolescent. Twenty years earlier, he’d provided sperm to a fertility clinic in exchange for money. As his on/off girlfriend tells him she is pregnant, he also discovers he’s the father of 533 children, 142 of whom have filed a class action lawsuit to determine the identity of their biological father, known only by the pseudonym Starbuck.”

Some people have a hard time adapting to parenthood when a child comes along.
For David Wozniak, that challenge is multiplied by 533, in the comedy drama 'Starbuck', all about sperm donorhood and the surprises it can throw up.
HuffPost UK has an exclusive clip from the French film - Watch Above - and some blurb below...
Patrick Huard gets some rather surprising news in 'Starbuck'
David Wozniak (Patrick Huard) has reached his 40s lumbering around without a single adult responsibility. He coasts through life as an unreliable delivery man and is a burden to his girlfriend Valerie.
But when she announces her surprise pregnancy, David's past suddenly catches up. Having to face the fact that he will be a father, David discovers that a series of sperm donations he made 20 years earlier mean he's already the unwitting father of 533 children - of which 142 are determined to discover his identity.

Released in Canada last year to excellent early reviews, Starbuck has spent the past year on the festival circuit, coming away with a handful of awards to its name, and earning plenty of praise – you can read our review here.
Already set for a Us remake, with Vince Vaughn attached in the lead, the original Quebec-made comedy will be released in the UK next month, and now a great new trailer has arrived.

Already slated for a DreamWorks remake, starring Vince Vaughn, Cobie Smulders, Chris Pratt and Britt Robertson, a trailer for the next year’s Us release of the original movie has finally arrived.
I’ve already told you the first Starbuck director Ken Scott would also write and direct the English-language remake with shooting scheduled to start before the year’s end.
Getting back to the original we can see the crowd-pleasing comedy which explores various meanings of fatherhood in the modern age, starring Patrick Huard, Julie Le Breton, Antoine Bertrand and Dominic Philie.
Sadly, I know that the film’s language may scare off many moviegoers, but if you get the chance, see this one before a 2013-scheduled star vehicle for Vince Vaughn.
Finally, the fourth annual Milwaukee Film Festival opened Thursday night with a French-Canadian Starbuck.
Therefore, check out the first trailer to see why it’s already being remade.

A fourth trailer of the upcoming adventure blockbuster Le poil de la bête has arrived online. The film's release is scheduled for October 1rst.
The story, which was penned by Stéphane J. Bureau and Pierre Daudelin, takes place in 1665 in New France at a time when a part of Canada was colonialized by France. Joseph Côté (Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge) escapes from a prison in order to avoid death by hanging. Moreover, while some colonial soldiers are chasing him, Joseph takes the identity of a jesuit and hides in the seigneury of Beaufort where most men are waiting for "daughhters of the king"(French women who were sent to Canada in order to find a husband).
At night, Joseph finds out that there are werewolves that terrorize the village. Besides, things get complicated when he falls in love with Marie Labotte (Viviane Audet), a "daughter of the king" that no one wants to marry.
