Orville Peck has announced details for his new Ep Show Pony, his first release since signing with Columbia Records and the follow-up to 2019’s Sub Pop album Pony. As a preview of the six-track project, which arrives June 12th and features a duet with pop-country queen Shania Twain, Peck has released the brooding song “No Glory in the West.”
With gentle acoustic strums that echo cowboy songs of old, “No Glory in the West” dismantles various romantic ideals of travel and cowboy life as a way to examine solitary life.

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 10 years have passed since the events of the 2011 film, which ends with Caesar leading a band of genetically enhanced apes into the redwood forests near San Francisco while an infected airline pilot sets off for Paris, accelerating the simian flu plague that will ultimately threaten the human race.
In the new film, which opens July 11, Caesar’s growing tribe is forced to confront a desperate band of human survivors after a decade of pestilence, disorder, and civil war. But how exactly did that breakdown occur, leaving mankind on the precipice of extinction and vulnerable to ape supremacy?...

In Mgmt's newest music video, for a song called "Cool Song No. 2," The Wire and Boardwalk Empire star Michael K. Williams plays a plant-hunting witch doctor who dreams up a psychedelic drug that ends up giving the man a horrifying deformity. It's sad and beautiful and directed by Isaiah Seret (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Kisses Over Babylon"), with cinematography by Bradford Young (Ain't Them Bodies Saints).

Norah Jones isn’t kidding when she says she wants you out of her life in the video for “Happy Pills,” the first single off her May 1 album, “Little Broken Hearts” produced with Danger Mouse. The Isaiah Seret-directed video starts in the past--the late ‘50s or early ‘60s— and goes forward and back in time as she lives out a revenge fantasy against her cheating beau. She has it out for both the boyfriend and his girlfriend in the Hitchcockian tale, although, the video is a little hard to follow at times as various scenarios play out and time moves ahead. ...

Filmmaker Bruce Baillie was there at the first Aaff — and numerous times since. He’s back this year with a major retrospective of his entire career that spans three separate programs. Baillie, who’ll be in attendance of course, will present a brand-new restored version of his epic pseudo-Western Quick Billy, plus screenings of his classic short movies such as Castro Street, Yellow Horse, Quixote, To Parsifal and more.

Cults has released their official video for “Go Outside” off of their debut record. Directed by Isaiah Seret, the video is centered around Jim Jones and his famous mega-cult the People’s Temple. Seret has spliced together news footage from the 1978 Jonestown massacre and footage of the Peoples Temple so it appears that the cult members are actually singing the band’s song. Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion both make appearances, embedded into the footage. Check out the video and a statement from Seret about the video, courtesy of Stereogum:...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.
On Bad Lit, I tend to like to put up festival lineups that include days and times of screenings. However, since I...
