Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

As the new year dawns, a fresh cinematic universe is on the horizon for DC Comics-based projects. With James Gunn at the helm, he doesn’t shy away from dispelling rumors surrounding ‘Superman: Legacy’ and potential additions to the revamped Dcu.
Recent rumors circulating about planned and unplanned Dcu properties have centered on the speculated ‘Waller’ TV Show. Initially intended as a 13-episode series, scripts were mostly complete, and casting had commenced. Phil Abraham was set to direct the initial two episodes, with Freddie Stroma reprising his role as Vigilante and Sean Gunn taking on Maxwell Lord. Supporting roles were to be filled by John Douglas Thompson and Ivanna Sakhno. The season was slated to be split into two parts, with the first half premiering in the spring of 2025 and the second half in the fall.

With the new year comes a new cinematic universe for the projects based on DC comics, and now that Gunn is officially in charge, he really does not hold back on debunking various rumors related to ‘Superman: Legacy’ and other possible projects that might be developed as a part of newly overhauled Dcu.
Recently, some rumors resurfaced regarding planned and (unplanned)Dcu properties, mostly related to the alleged ‘Waller’ TV Show. ‘Waller’ was supposed to be a TV series consisting of 13 episodes. The majority of scripts were complete, and casting has begun. Phil Abraham was supposed to direct the first two episodes. Freddie Stroma would return as Vigilante, and Sean Gunn would portray Maxwell Lord. John Douglas Thompson and Ivanna Sakhno joining in supporting roles. The season was supposed to be divided into two parts, with the first half set to premiere in the spring of 2025, followed by the second half in the fall.

When it comes to TV, how comforting is too comforting? At what point do the vibes outweigh the plot? These are the brave questions perhaps not asked but definitely raised by Julian Fellowes’ “The Gilded Age,” which finished its second season on Sunday, December 17. In a review of the full season, IndieWire’s Ben Travers compared the show to “a light drizzle,” saying that “The absence of actual conflict — problems that require more than a polite request to sort out — is so pronounced it threatens to undermine the serene parade of beautiful gowns by boring the pants off of those wearing them.”
And while Mr. Travers has new problems to deal with, “The Gilded Age” did gain a modicum of momentum in its back half and especially its finale, even if the actual plot developments were predictable (and not just from historical accuracy). There is potential here, whether it’s...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 1.] One of the biggest questions from The Gilded Age Season 1 finale was answered in The Gilded Age Season 2 premiere, which aired on Sunday, October 29 on HBO after a year-and-a-half hiatus. Last year’s finale revealed that Peggy Scott’s (Denée Benton) son was not stillborn like her father, Arthur (John Douglas Thompson), had made her believe. Rather, he had been living in Philadelphia with his adoptive family all this time. The baby’s father was a stockboy at Arthur’s pharmacy that Peggy had fallen in love with. The baby was born after their elopement, but Arthur convinced her he was stillborn. Peggy was forced to annul her marriage, leading to her moving to Pennsylvania to attend the Philadelphia Institute for Colored Youth, meanwhile Arthur secretly had the baby adopted by a Black family in Philadelphia. She began working for Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski...

“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.
Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Danielle Deadwyler’s nuanced performance as the mother of Emmett Till, the black teenager murdered by southern racists, is the pivot of Chinonye Chukwu’s stirring real-life drama
An awards-worthy performance from Danielle Deadwyler (who stole the show in 2021’s The Harder They Fall) lends a passionate heart to this solidly engrossing and still contemporary historical drama set in 1955 and dedicated “to the life and legacy of Mamie Till-Mobley”. Revisiting the true story of the mother turned activist whose battle for justice proved a cornerstone of the emerging American civil rights movement, director and co-writer Chinonye Chukwu treads a fine line between display and discretion, laying bare brutal truths without alienating a wide audience. The fact that the Emmett Till Antilynching Act was passed into US law last year makes the subject matter all the more timely.

In 1955, Moses Wright stood by helplessly as white men abducted his nephew, Emmett Till, threatening to kill Wright and his family if they interfered. When those men were brought to trial, Wright testified against them with quiet dignity, despite knowing that white men were unlikely to be convicted in Mississippi and that he and his family would have to leave their home or again face possible death.
To convey the gravitas and emotional depths of Wright in “Till,” director Chinonye Chukwu needed an actor who could play tragedy. She turned to John Douglas Thompson, who was a computer salesman until his mid-30s when he took up acting; in the past two decades, he has become perhaps one of America’s greatest classical actors.
Thompson has earned acclaim and awards for his star turns in “Othello,” “Richard III,” “Macbeth,” “Merchant of Venice,” “Antony and Cleopatra” and “Tamburlaine,” while also excelling...

Plot: The true story of Mamie Till (Danielle Deadwyler), who became a tireless advocate for justice after the racially-motivated, brutal murder of her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till (Jalyn Hall), in Mississippi.
Review: The saga of Emmett Till was likely not an easy one to translate to the big screen. After all, it’s the story of the brutal, racially motivated murder of a child by two men who never had to pay for their actions. It could have been a spectacularly tragic tale, but by shifting the focus to Till’s mother, Mamie, it becomes a powerful account of one mother’s fight for justice. Director/co-writer Chinonye Chukwu directs the film with great restraint, never shying away from the brutality of the crime, but stopping short of depicting the act itself. Rather than show Emmett’s mutilation at the hands of Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam, you hear one brutal,...

Chinonye Chukwu’s Till finds the Clemency writer-director facing the story of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old boy lynched in 1955. More specifically the story of Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till, who became an ardent activist in the decades following her son’s murder. The film comes less than a year after the implementation of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, a piece of legislation nearly 70 years in the making, and the first federal anti-lynching bill.
With Till, Chukwu focuses on Mamie’s journey before and after Emmett’s death, bathing the screen in vibrant colors and light even through moments of anger, evil, sadness, and pain. The director, who co-wrote with Michael Reilly and Keith Beauchamp, opts for warmth and brightness, especially as she shoots the Chicago lives of Emmett and Mamie. Portraying Emmett and Mamie are Jalyn Hall and Danielle Deadwyler, respectively, attempting to fill these lives with an extreme level of humanity.

Realm hopes to scare up listeners for an election-timed, star-studded audio thriller from Trudie Styler.
Spark Hunter will debut November 8 and will feature Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), who will also executive produce with Styler. The eight-episode, futuristic series also marks Styler’s first foray into audio.
The Fighter Steel Productions title is centered around a set of top secret covert recordings from the archives of the President of the United States illegally released by the world’s greatest expert in robotics. It’s his warning to humanity. Co-written and created by podcast producer K.B. Miller and executive producer Teressa Tunney, the project was inspired both by Miller’s experience as principal investigator on an AI project for the U.S. Department of Defense and by the ethical dilemmas Tunney encountered in documenting the story of Korea’s comfort women.

The latest trailer for Till, Clemency director Chinonye Chukwu’s movie about the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, shows his mother Mamie Till-Mobley choosing an open casket funeral, a decision that galvanized the U.S. civil rights movement.
“The whole world has to see what happened to my son,” Mamie, played by The Harder They Fall’s Danielle Deadwyler, declares in the trailer as she looked to open American eyes to the barbaric act committed against her son by his murderers in Mississippi.

Saturday night saw the world premiere of “Till” at the 60th New York Film Festival, with the audience filling up Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall to watch the harrowing new film from writer-director Chinonye Chukwu about Mamie Till-Mobley’s journey from grief to action in wake of her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, being lynched while on vacation in Mississippi in 1955.
The movie is Chukwu’s first film since the Sundance-winning drama “Clemency,” which also made a dent at Lincoln Center by opening its New Directors/New Films festival in 2019. Chukwu’s first studio effort further elevates her profile as a director of grim-but-stirring dramas with modern-day resonance.
One of two major studio awards titles premiering at NYFF (the other is “She Said”), “Till” landed at the festival with the promise of an emotionally resonant look at racism and resilience built around its central performance. Buzz has been strong for Best Actress contender Danielle Deadwyler,...

The simple, single-syllable word “boy” has multiple shades of meaning in Chinonye Chukwu’s emotionally wrenching Till. It conveys pure scorn in the form of address used by white supremacists in the Jim Crow South to intimidate and demean Black males of any age. It shudders with vulnerability in a newspaper headline announcing that an abducted 14-year-old’s corpse has been found in the Tallahatchie River. It burns with anguish as a mother tells the world of her son’s mutilated body: “That was my boy.” It carries bitter irony in the cheerful sign welcoming visitors to the Mississippi town where Emmett Till’s murderers were acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury: “Sumner: A Good Place to Raise a Boy.”
Any film dramatizing the killing in 1955 of Emmett Louis Till, one of the most indelible 20th century horrors of violent American racial hatred,...
