The modern video game industry primarily consists of two groups: Aaa developers and indie studios. The Aaa group has access to millions of dollars worth of funding and large development teams, while indie companies generally have smaller budgets and crews. While some indie organizations can receive an injection of cash from publishers, these days many studios turn to Kickstarter.
Kickstarter is arguably the most popular site that lets potential patrons vote with their wallets. If someone sees something they like, they can give it some money and bring it to life. The site has resulted in more than its fair share of noteworthy projects, including the Gloomhaven board game series and the amazing show The Legend of Vox Machina. However, Kickstarter is also home to just as many duds, such as the Skarp Laser Razor and the Ouya. Video games are no exception, as the site has played host to...

After briefly flirting with the idea of a 3D Castlevania with the Nintendo 64, Konami decided to go back to the 2D well with the Game Boy Advance. And seeing as the “Metroidvania” style was still hot, it made sense for Konami to try and continue it. Disappointingly for some, neither of the first two Gba entries were quite able to approach the de facto Metroidvania in Symphony of the Night. With the third and final Gba entry, 2003’s Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Konami appeared to finally get as close to Symphony as they could, despite the hardware limitations. That fact still remains true, two decades later.
Switching away from the traditional Castlevania story, Aria of Sorrow takes place in 2035 in Japan. Soma Cruz is an exchange student living near the Hakuba shrine. During a solar eclipse, Soma visits the Hakuba shrine with his childhood friend, Mina Hakuba. Suddenly, Soma and...

July promises to be an amazing month for new game releases and here are some that you’ll definitely want to be on the lookout for over the next few weeks.
Iron Man Vr (July 3rd)
In just a matter of days, you too can live out the power fantasy of piloting Tony Stark’s iconic Iron Man suit, though beware – there’s a relatively steep upfront cost associated with experiencing what it’s like to be an Avenger. If you already own a PlayStation Vr headset and two Move controllers, however, you’re all set. And if you’d like a taste of what awaits you, head over here to watch Camouflaj’s eagerly-awaited launch trailer for Iron Man Vr.

During a recent livestream, director Koji Igarashi has confirmed that Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 is in development.
The original Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon was released as a kind of fundraising bonus for the successful Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter campaign. While Ritual of the Night was focused on attempting to capture the gameplay style of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (and its many spiritual spin-offs), Curse of the Moon was designed to resemble the classic 8-bit Castlevania games (most notable Castelvania 3).
Despite its status as a spin-off, Curse of the Moon received nearly universal critical acclaim from those who fell in love with its brand of retro gameplay that hasn’t necessarily been revisited as often as the Symphony of the Night school of game design (which helped refine the Metroidvania genre).

As a long-time fan of the Castlevania franchise, you better believe I’ve had my eye on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Produced by the legendary Koji Igarashi, the side-scroller was originally funded through a massively successful Kickstarter. The campaign kicked off shortly after Igarashi departed Konami in 2014 — free from the binds of his long-time home, fans were excited to see what the eccentric producer had up his sleeves. Now, after four long years, we can finally see what he’s been working on.
In Bloodstained you play as Miriam, a young girl imbued with demonic powers. Having been spared from sacrifice due to an untimely nap, our heroine wakes up a decade later to a drastically different world. One of the last Shardbinders — a group of people who were unwillingly bonded with deadly, but powerful, Shards — she’s all that stands in the way of unfathomable destruction. A fellow Shardbinder,...

Release Date: June 18, 2019
Platform: PS4 (reviewed), Xbo, Switch, PC
Developer: ArtPlay
Publisher: 505 Games
Genre: Metroidvania Platformer
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is such a beloved game that it, along with strange bedfellow Super Metroid, inspired a whole subgenre of platformers focused on exploration and backtracking. Today, Metroidvania games are as relevant and popular as ever, but one of the OGs of the genre, former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, takes it back to its roots with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a spiritual successor to SotN that he conceived when he left Konami five years ago, launching an extremely successful, $5.5 million Kickstarter campaign.
Bloodstained is Castlevania through and through, as you battle through hordes of monsters in a sprawling, Gothic castle replete with creepy portraits, delightfully destructible chandeliers, and inexplicably deadly floor plans.

“Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night,” the latest game from “Castlevania” series producer Koji Igarashi, will now launch sometime in 2019 — but not on the PlayStation Vita.
The Vita version is cancelled, Igarashi told Kickstarter backers on Monday. Sony is reportedly ending production of physical Vita game cartridges by the end of fiscal 2018. It’s also discontinuing the handheld console itself, Igarashi said, and halting certain online store support features.
“It is extremely unfortunate, but as a result, we won’t be releasing the game on Vita,” Igarashi said. “For the backers who have ordered the Ps Vita version of the game, you will be able to choose another platform or request a refund.”
“Being a huge PlayStation and Sony fan myself, I also know cancelling the Vita version of the game may be disappointing to some of you, but with Sony’s plans to discontinue the console and physical production of games,...

Netflix's Castlevania series is full of easter eggs and callbacks to the original video game series. Here's what we found!
Netflix's Castlevania came out of nowhere and captured the attention of franchise fans who still can't believe that one of the few respectable video game adaptations so happens to be based on a series that hasn't gotten a lot of love recently.
While Castlevania features some notable diversions from the established mythology of the games - many of which were implemented in the name of fleshing out Castlevania III's thin story - that doesn't mean that the show doesn't pay homage to its source material. In fact, Castlevania's first four episodes are loaded with callbacks that all but the most ardent of Castlevania fans might have missed.

Strange Brigade
“Strange Brigade is a four player co-op or single player action, puzzle, and hoard game. In a way, it reminds me of a less-narrative-based Uncharted game. Definitely a blast to play.” - Eric
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Speaking of Uncharted, it looks like Naughty Dog has done it again with The Lost Legacy. They managed to make to side-characters and make them the stars in their own incredible adventure.

I felt a wave of nostalgia sweep over me upon seeing Konami announce Super Bomberman R for the Nintendo Switch. I can remember fawning over Bomberman Hero just as much as Super Mario 64 back in the era of 3D platformers, and while time has almost certainly been kinder to the latter than the former, there will always be a place in my heart for the adorable little Bomber and his friends.
Of course, as we all know, Konami’s handling of its blockbuster franchises has been a bit… dubious of late (and I’m being extremely charitable in that assessment). From shoving away top designers like Koji Igarashi and Hideki Kojima to reinventing beloved series like Silent Hill as pachinko machines, Konami’s actions have left many people’s faith in the company to do right by its big names has been at an all-time low.

Kickstarter-success Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night has finally found a company willing to take on publishing duties. 505 Games, who have published everything from Payday 2 to Mean Girls DS, will partner with Inti Creates in order to release the title worldwide.
Despite being recently delayed to 2018, famed producer Koji Igarashi wanted to waste no time in relaying the news to Bloodstained supporters. To celebrate the agreement, the usual monthly updated was posted ahead of schedule. While this new video is mostly devoted to IGA and 505 Games president Ian Howe discussing the partnership, you can catch a few new seconds of footage from the title as well.
As mentioned, IGA opens up as to why his team needed to find a publisher for Bloodstained in order for it to come out as best as possible.
Although we have started this project through Kickstarter, we wanted more people to play now that we are in full production.

Castlevania's Game Boy Advance trilogy represents one of the greatest eras in the franchise's history.
More than 20 years after its release, Symphony of the Night is still fondly remembered as the best game in the Castlevania series. To some fans, it might even be the greatest game of all time. And its tight controls, CD soundtrack, and impeccably-designed labyrinthine castle still hold up incredibly well today.
However, Symphony of the Night was only the first game in the series to adopt the RPG mechanics and Metroidvania-style level design that the series is now known for. In many ways, the three handheld titles that immediately followed Symphony of the Night arguably surpassed its greatness.
The trilogy of Castlevania games that appeared on the Game Boy Advance - Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow - represents one of the most successful eras in the franchise's 30-year history.

Kickstarter darling Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night has been delayed.
The game, one pitched as the spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, is now on course for launch in the “first half of 2018,” when the metroidvania title will touch down for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, PC, and Wii U.
Addressing the delay, creator Koji Igarashi offered a candid status report about development thus far: “Things have been progressing with development for Bloodstained. But between our current production setup and release deadline I’ve realized that at this rate the game may not end up meeting my quality standards.”
In order to bring Bloodstained closer in line with internal expectations, Igarashi-san went on to reveal that a second development team has now been brought aboard.

It’s official – Shenmue III is now the most funded video game on Kickstarter, and funding hasn’t even ended yet. As of writing, only 11 hours remain before pledges are no longer accepted, but Yu Suzuki’s long-awaited sequel has already reached its goal, and then some. Previous record holder, Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, a game that’s being headed by Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, managed to generate $5,545,991 in funding on June 11 of this year.

Update: Just like that, Shenmue III's broken through its $2m minimum goal on Kickstarter. At the time of writing, it's amassed a startling $2.6m, which is all the more remarkable considering the project's been live for less than a day. Naturally, there are stretch goals; currently, these amount to subtitles in various languages, but if the game reaches $4m, its map will get a significant expansion and there'll be an extra five minigames thrown into the mix.
At the rate it's going, it doesn't seem like too much of a leap to suggest that Shenmue III will sail past the $4m mark with ease. The game's currently in development for PC and PlayStation 4, but Yu Suzuki and his team haven't yet ruled out other platforms according to their Faq page...

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

When Castlevania godfather Koji Igarashi approached Konami with the idea of bringing the classic gameplay of franchise favorites like Symphony of the Night into the latest generation of PS4 and XboxOne, he was shot down curtly. Since then Igarashi has formed his own studio and launched a startlingly successful Kickstarter campaign which has made headlines and broken records all over the realm of gaming media. Castlevania successor Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night has had its release pushed back to 2018, its creator announces...
Update: Just a brief report on the progress of Koji Igarashi's much-anticipated Castlevania successor, Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night - and we're sad to say it isn't great news.
Igarashi has announced that his gothic action platformer, once pencilled in for March 2017, is to have its release pushed back until the first half of 2018. According to our expert calculations, that means we'll have to wait an additional year before Igarashi's unofficial sequel to the cult favourite Symphony Of The Night finally emerges.
"I made this decision to absolutely guarantee the game is done right the first time," Igarashi says in a new developer diary video, which you can watch below. The design veteran goes onto explain that he's adding a new development team to work alongside Bloodstained's existing producers,...

From Castlevania series director Koji Igarashi comes Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, a 2D platformer already storming Kickstarter...
Over the past few days, a project tantalisingly codenamed Igavania has gradually proliferated across the web. Everything pointed to a new game from Koji Igarashi, the director of numerous Castlevania entries since the classic Symphony Of The Night - more than likely a spiritual successor to those games.
As it turns out, this is exactly what we're getting. Yesterday evening, Igarashi formally unveiled Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, a 2.5D platformer in the mould of the gothic action games Igarashi once created for Konami. It's a partnership between Igarashi, Inti Creates - the dev team behind, among other things, Keiji Inafune's Mega Man successor, Mighty No. 9 - and indie publisher Nicalis.
Bloodstained has also launched its Kickstarter campaign, which managed to rocket past its $500,000 minimum goal within a few hours and...

Everything you need to know about Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, including latest news, release date, trailers, and more!
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is famed Castlevania director Koji Igarashi's return to the Metroidvania genre after his departure from Konami. The game was first announced through a Kickstarter campaign in 2015 that met its $500,000 goal within four hours and raised over $1 million in its first day.
“I have been gone for too long, and it’s time for a resurrection!” Igarashi said in the video introducing the Kickstarter. “Publishers of the world told me that gamers no longer care for this style of game, but I know they’re wrong!”
By the end of the campaign, Bloodstained had raised over $5.5 million, proving that fans were still hungry for this type of experience. Two years later, Bloodstained is still in development but is inching closer to a 2018 release.

Could there be a new game on the way from Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi? A new website drops some teasing clues...
Kickstarter's provided a number of veteran developers with a means of getting their latest games off the ground, whether it's David Braben's Elite: Dangerous or Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 - his spiritual successor to the classic Mega Man.
Koji Igarashi, the creator behind Konami's Castlevania series, could be the latest to head down the crowdfunding path. Earlier today, Tyrone Rodriguez - the founder of indie developer and publisher Nicalis - tweeted a link to a new website, swordorwhip.com.
Follow the link, and you're currently confronted with something like this:
The choice between a sword or a whip is a clear reference to the Castlevania series, and the chap seated at his gothic-looking throne appears to be modelled on Igarashi himself.
See those runes behind Igarashi's head?...

The imminent release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is bringing a close to the tragic trilogy that rebooted the struggle between Dracula and the Belmont clan, now is as good a time as ever to take a look back at games over the years that have featured fangs and boasted bloodsuckers. This is by no means a definitive list (nothing, nothing could make me discuss Vampire Rain at length), but a tiny taste of a subgenre of games to numerous to…Count.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
The second title set in White Wolf’s World of Darkness universe, Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines had all the potential to be a new classic. Casting players as a fledgling vampire unwillingly sired into the fold (a big no-no in World of Darkness lore), it featured a unique cast of characters populating a neon-drenched Los Angeles, rife with vampiric politics and supernatural happenings. Unfortunately,...

For 13 years, Konami’s Castlevania was defined by Symphony of the Night and its handheld sequels, a series of sprawling, open-world platformers produced by Koji Igarashi. From 1997 on, Castlevania produced several entries in this style, with a few diversions into 3D that were met with lukewarm reception. This changed in 2010, when developer Mercurysteam rebooted the series with the 3D brawler Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which dropped Belmont patriarch Gabriel into a God of War-esque game that finally achieved success with transplanting Castlevania to the third dimension.
Mercurysteam is now attempting another transplant: to take their 3D handling of the series and rework it as a 2D platformer like the IGA-produced games of the past, while peeling back more layers of the tragic Belmont legacy. The result is (deep breath) Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate on the Nintendo 3Ds.

Castlevania in 3D has always been a slippery slope for Konami. Despite having a fantastic pedigree in 2D space (thanks in no small part to the brilliant direction of Koji Igarashi), the third dimension has always eluded the series, resulting in either mediocrity (Castlevania: Curse of Darkness) or unspeakable awfulness (Castlevania 64). When the announcement was made that there was going to be a new 3D Castlevania, developed by Mercurysteam (Clive Barker's Jericho), I was justifiably apprehensive. Even with Metal Gear producer Hideo Kojima on board, I felt that yet another attempt to bring Castlevania's 2D gameplay to 3D space was going to fall flat on its face. However, Mercurysteam skirted the issue in...

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" represents a titanic shift for the veteran video game franchise. Attempts have been made in the past to bring the long-standing feud between the Belmont family and Universal's entire catalog of classic movie monsters into the 3-D gaming landscape. Those attempts have all failed to some degree. "Lords of Shadows" is without a doubt the most successful, an undeniably entertaining game that finds inspiration in some welcome, if unlikely, places. It is also the entry that departs most dramatically from the franchise's established conventions. So the question is, is there enough "Castlevania" left here to satisfy long-time fans of the series or is "Lords of Shadow" nodding too much to its contemporaries while abandoning its roots?
The Basics
The story in "Lords of Shadow" exists outside of the established series canon, functioning as a full-on reboot. You play as holy knight Gabriel Belmont, grief-stricken after the...

Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi says he injected fresh blood into 1997’s Symphony Of The Night by helping introduce a leveling system and recasting straightforward dungeon runs into freeform Metroidvania maps because he saw little-replayed copies of previous entries languishing in the used-games bin. The resulting game was a masterpiece, and the series has been self-cannibalizing ever since, but it’s still surprising how blatantly Castlevania: Harmony Of Despair cherry-picks from the characters, sound effects, sprites, monsters, and maps of that iconic game and the 2-D Nintendo DS titles it spawned. Despair is essentially six beefy boss rushes set ...

The last great console Castlevania, Symphony of the Night, shipped thirteen years and two hardware generations ago. Attempts to move the series into three dimensions, so far, have been — how shall I put this — Not well received. Fans have spent ages clamoring for a new 2D console installment in the series. Well, it looks like that wish may finally be granted.
According to a source close to Joystiq, Harmony Of Despair, a title recently trademarked in Europe, is in fact a new 2D Castlevania title for consoles. It has been suggested that the game, under development for Xbox Live, features six(!) player co-op, as well as a versus mode that one imagines must play out something like Super Smash Bros.
Apparently a “Metroid-vania” game along the lines of the many fantastic DS Castlevania titles, Harmony of Despair is said to feature quite small character sprites, and backgrounds that can be...

When Hideo Kojima walked on stage at Konami’s E3 press conference this afternoon, announcing that he was going to be showing off four games that Kojima Productions is working on, you could literally hear the crowd start holding their breath. They let out that breath as screams when the fourth game turned out to be ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’.
A massive open world action game, “Lords of Shadow” is being positioned as a reboot for the entire series. The trailer shows some furious 3D whip brawling and looks like it may give even “God of War III” a run for its money. The game also has a star studded voice cast including Patrick Stewart and Robert Carlyle.
“Lords of Shadow” was actually announced by Konami last year at the Leipzig Games Conference, but it wasn’t branded as a “Castlevania” game at the time, nor was it a Kojima Productions project.

You’ve got to hand it to Microsoft. In the weeks leading up to E3, the discussion surrounding the house of X was focused on precisely what they didn’t have. Where was their fall line-up? Where were the exclusives that have defined the console? Microsoft had them and then some.
Opening your show with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr instead of closing with them is the probably the most impressive show of corporate confidence in history. With the reveal of Project Natal, Microsoft’s new hands-free controller-camera, the house of green showed that this was no mere act of baseless hubris. They came to play.
The show opened with a selection of multiplatform titles. “The Beatles: Rock Band” looked more than promising by changing up “Rock Band”’s familiar play with vocal harmonies. Three singers from Harmonix’s house band performed “Day Tripper”, with three separate vocal pitches to perform.
