- Is a former member of the improvisational comedy group Boom Chicago, based in Amsterdam
- Moved to St. Paul as a young child, where he lived in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood with his mother, Kari. She introduced him to the stage. His first play was at the Steppingstone Theater, where he played a clown in 'Aesop's Fables: A Musical Circus'.
- Went to St. Paul's Murray Junior High and Central High, where he graduated in 1995. At Central, he was a member of the Central Touring Theatre and quit the Central basketball team so he could join an improv comedy group.
- During his time at St. Paul's Central High, he became friends with classmates Nick Swardson and Charlie Sanders.
