These days, legacy can be a burden for television. Whether it’s the legacy of a beloved property poised to be bastardized via reboot, the legacy of a network or star, the legacy of a brilliant debut now hinging upon equal or better subsequent installment, there are legacies intertwined in too many new shows, hanging in the balance as studios and streamers churn out new stories.
But legacy doesn’t matter so much to Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) the lead of Marion Dayre’s “Echo,” now streaming in full on Disney+. Whether it’s her family, her employer, or the stories passed down to her as a child, Maya is more interested in forging her own path than appeasing various players around her. Like “Echo” itself, she stands alone and stands tall — distinct and imposing compared to any imitation.
On her path to becoming the eponymous Echo, Maya is a...

Ben Whishaw has stealthily become one of Britain’s most prominent actors, offering kind aphorisms as the voice of Paddington Bear and issuing intelligent retorts as the latest incarnation of Q in the James Bond series. But a deeper look at his filmography over more than two decades reveals a much more varied body of work. From the meek gentility of Women Talking to the brutal physicality of Surge, from playing with the iconography of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’s I’m Not There to committing to the absurdist antics of Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster, Whishaw knows how to surprise in any register.
The actor gets one of his most compelling showcases to date in Ira Sachs’s Passages. As the graphic artist Martin, he’s one corner of an emerging love triangle between his husband, the film director Tomas (an electric Franz Rogowski), and the Parisian schoolteacher Agathe...

Ben Whishaw has won the coveted Leading Actor gong at the BAFTA TV Awards.
Whishaw beat off competition from Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, Slow Horses’ Gary Oldman, The Responder’s Martin Freeman and Chaske Spencer, who led BBC/Amazon Prime Video’s The English.
Whishaw played Adam in This is Going to Hurt, Adam Kay’s British medical comedy-drama television miniseries for the BBC. The show focused on the lives of a group of junior doctors working in the NHS, exploring the emotional effects of working in a stressful work environment.
Last year’s winner was Sean Bean for his role in Jimmy McGovern’s BBC prison drama Time.
Whishaw thanked co-star Ambika Mod and said, “You’re my best actor” to the newcomer, who played Shruti in the show. Mod was controversially snubbed from the Best Actress list and the comment appeared to be a barbed reference to this.

Someone get Queen Elizabeth II a posthumous honorary Oscar or BAFTA. Months before her death, the monarch made a surprise appearance in a Paddington Bear video. The occasion? Her Platinum Jubilee celebrating 70 years on the throne. But it wasn’t all marmalade sandwiches. According to the co-writer of the Paddington Bear video, it took some serious acting chops from Queen Elizabeth.
