Annie Edson Taylor
Annie Edson Taylor was an American schoolteacher and daredevil who became the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She was 63 years old when she made the attempt on October 24, 1901.
Taylor was born in Auburn, New York, in 1838. She taught school for many years, but she lost her job in the 1890s during the economic depression. She decided to attempt to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel in order to raise money.
Taylor built her own barrel, which was made of oak and iron. It was 3 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet high. She had a small peephole in the side of the barrel so she could see where she was going.
On October 24, 1901, Taylor climbed into her barrel and was tied to a rope. A boat towed her out into the Niagara River and she was released. The barrel tumbled over the falls and into the rapids below. Taylor was tossed around inside the barrel, but she survived the trip.
Taylor emerged from the barrel soaking wet, but she was unharmed. She was greeted by a crowd of cheering people. She became an instant celebrity and toured the country giving lectures about her experience. She died in 1921 at the age of 82.
Taylor's feat was a remarkable achievement. She was the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She was also an inspiration to many people. She showed that it is possible to achieve great things, even if you are old or have faced adversity.
