Despite Its Ambitions, Psychological Thriller ‘Lavender’ With Abbie Cornish Fails To Deliver [Review]
“If you did bad things but don’t remember, are they still part of who you are?” That’s the central question troubling Jane (Abbie Cornish), a woman who, after years of repressed memories, begins to wonder what role she played in the massacre that resulted in the death of three of her family members.

Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly (“The Last Exorcism Part II“) opens “Lavender” with an ambitiously shot scene.

'Lavender': Film Review
Abbie Cornish at an event for Seven Psychopaths (2012)
Characters in horror films would be well advised to heed a couple of simple rules: Repressed memories should by all means stay repressed. And whatever you do, avoid walking through mazes.

Unfortunately, such advice would be lost on Jane (Abbie Cornish), the heroine of Lavender, the latest effort by director Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder, The Last Exorcism: Part II). A photographer who specializes in shooting rundown, abandoned farmhouses (not hard to see where this is going), Jane finds her life upended after a serious auto accident that leaves her with memory loss.

Prodded by an eager hospital psychiatrist...

Q&A with Lavender Director Ed Gass-Donnelly
Out today in theaters, VOD, and Digital HD from Samuel Goldwyn Films and Ambi Media Group is the supernatural thriller Lavender, and we caught up with co-writer / director Ed Gass-Donnelly for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the making of his new horror film.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Ed. How did you initially get involved with Lavender, and what attracted you to telling this story that you also co-wrote?

Ed Gass-Donnelly: My co-writer, Colin, brought me a draft years ago that I optioned and we developed together. It was one of those projects that had to spend a lot of time in a drawer before we could figure out exactly what it needed to become. I’ve always been attracted to the idea of ghosts being memories frozen in time, that a psychological haunting can be just as terrifying as a supernatural one.

Lavender Director on Storytelling, Creative Control & What Happened on The Last Exorcism Sequel [Interview]
Ed Gass-Donnelly left a huge impression on me a few years ago with the release of Small Town Murder Songs (review), a little Canadian thriller with Peter Stormare in a rare leading role.

The movie garnered Gass-Donnelly a lot of attention including being named one of Variety's "10 Directors to Watch" in 2011 which lead Gass-Donnelly to head to Hollywood to direct The Last Exorcism Part II. That movie turned out to be a disaster but Gass-Donnelly has persisted, taking it as a learning experience and continuing to make movies on his own terms.

His latest, a thriller called Lavender, stars Abbie Cornish as a photographer who, after a car acc [Continued ...]...

Abbie Cornish Fights Memory Loss in Canadian Thriller Lavender [Trailer]
Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly arrived on the scene in 2010 with the outstanding Small Town Murder Songs (review). It wasn't his first film but by that point, it was clear that he was ready for the next big step.

That seemed to come with The Last Exorcism Part II except that movie failed to deliver anything of interest so Gass-Donnelly packed it up and headed back North and in the last few years, has co-directed a short film and released another movie, one that looks to be more in line with the talent on display in Small Town Murder Songs.

Lavender stars Abbie Cornish as Jane, a woman who loses her memory after an accident. [Continued ...]...

Creepy Trailer For The Horror Film Lavender, Starring Abbie Cornish
"Tag, you're it." "Let's play."

I've got a teaser trailer here for you to check out for an upcoming horror film called Lavender starring Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, Limitless).

Cornish plays a woman named Jane who loses her memory after a car accident. Her doctor recommends she return to her childhood home to help kickstart her memory, and it's there that she begins to have unpleasant childhood memories and she starts to see unexplained things.

It's a really short trailer and doesn't give us much, but I like what I see. Hopefully it turns out to be a decent horror flick. The movie was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly, who previously made This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Song, and The Last Exorcism Part II.

First Teaser Trailer for Horror Film 'Lavender' Starring Abbie Cornish
"Tag, you're it." "Let's play." The first short teaser trailer has debuted for a horror film called Lavender, the latest from Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly (of Small Town Murder Song and The Last Exorcism Part II previously). The film stars Abbie Cornish as a woman who begins to see unexplained supernatural things around her home after losing her memory. Not the most original concept for a horror, but as always we hope there's something unique about these kind of indie films. The cast includes Diego Klattenhoff, Justin Long and Dermot Mulroney. If you're interested in any way, take a look - it's a very short teaser. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Ed Gass-Donnelly's Lavender, on YouTube (via Quiet Earth): The past won't forget... First Look at Ed Gass-Donnelly's Latest Horror Lavender [Trailer]
I fell hard for director Ed Gass-Donnelly after seeing his sophomore feature Small Town Murder Songs (review). Gass-Donnelly didn't quite manage to meet the high bar set for himself with the pedestrian and completely forgettable The Last Exorcism Part II but it looks like he's back on track with his latest.

Lavender stars Abbie Cornish as Jane, a woman who loses her memory after a car accident. Her doctor recommends she return to her childhood home in an effort to jog her memory but the trip brings back childhood memories she'd rather forget.

Admittedly it's not a new concept but Cornish is a great actress and Gass-Donnell [Continued ...]...

2016 Tribeca Film Festival Interview: Abbie Cornish and Ed Gass-Donnelly Talk Lavender (Exclusive)
Lavender (2016)
Uncovering the true horrors of a person’s mind, particularly after they determinedly bury their most daunting memories in order to heal, can be a truly traumatizing experience for anyone. The sudden and unexpected remembrance of a terrifying and deeply unsettling past can at times become even more agonizing as the situation itself. Co-writer-director Ed Gass-Donnelly’s new tense psychological thriller, ‘Lavender,’ alluringly shows how even with the power of the subconscious to forget past pain, that previous stress can still haunt people in the present. ‘Lavender’ follows Jane (Abbie Cornish), a photographer who has captured the images of old and abandoned farmhouses for as long as she can remember. Jane’s former [ Read More ]

[Tribeca Review] Lavender
I have no doubt that one day gifted visual storyteller Ed Gass-Donnelly will make a brilliant work. With four features under his belt, including This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs, The Last Exorcism Part II and now Lavender, he’s shown tremendous promise capturing haunting images that externalize the internal conflicts, horrors and phobias of their subjects. His latest is a meditative horror film that, despite masterful visual direction and captivating performances, falls back on familiar horror/thriller tropes, courtesy of the screenplay by Gass-Donnelly and Colin Frizzell. Students of the genre will be far ahead, although they may admire the muted, understated style even if you how the blocks will fit together.

Abbie Cornish stars as Jane, a young mother suffering from memory loss following a car accident. She’s haunted by the specter of her past. With an apt and horrifying sequence, young Jane clenches a knife...

Lavender (2016)
In the thriller Lavender, Abbie Cornish stars as Jane, a photographer left with a seriously impaired memory following a car accident — which might not be such a bad thing if those pesky hallucinations she’s been having are any indication of what really went down. “A drama in the realm of a ghost movie,” is how Cornish described the film when she, along with Lavender director Ed Gass-Donnelly, stopped by Deadline’s Tribeca Studio at the Tribeca Film Festival. Abbie Cornish Joins Dermot Mulroney In Lavender
Abbie Cornish at an event for Seven Psychopaths (2012)
Memory loss can be a tricky thing to deal with in thrillers on screen – you have to get the tone right or it all just becomes silly. Abbie Cornish and Dermot Mulroney think that the script for Lavender has what it takes, signing on to co-star in the psychologically flavoured film.Ed Gass-Donnelly, who most recently brought us The Last Exorcism Part II, is behind this one, which he co-wrote with Colin Frizzell. The film finds Cornish as a photographer who must grapple with severe memory issues. Clues start to pop up in her work that suggests she might just be responsible for the death of family members she never knew existed. We smell the scent of conspiracy, which probably doesn’t have much of a whiff of lavender about it. ‘Whiplash’ Director Damien Chazelle’s Incredible Journey
By Anjelica Oswald

Managing Editor

Ever since Whiplash, a film about an aspiring jazz drummer and his vicious instructor, made its debut as the opening film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, writer-director Damien Chazelle has been surrounded by Oscar chatter for his second feature.

Indiewire’s James Rocchi said the film was “full of bravado and swagger, uncompromising where it needs to be, informed by great performances.” And The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg said the film has been surrounded in “intense and passionate discussion and debate…and that can only be a good thing for a little movie like this one.”

It won both the grand jury and audience awards for dramatic film at Sundance and has since received Independent Spirit Award, Satellite, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations. Though Whiplash has established Chazelle as a “notable talent,” his film had an unlikely journey to the big screen.

DVD Review: The Last Exorcism Part II (2013)
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has generously released The Last Exorcism Part II on Blu-ray and DVD for those smart enough to have avoided it in theaters, but brave (or unfortunate) enough to give it a chance at home. I know it's too late for some. Hopefully, my review can still save thousands of others from making the same mistake I did.

Eli Roth's The Last Exorcism was a "found footage" movie I really wanted to like. Against my better judgment, I went to see it in the theater and weathered through the first 70 minutes fighting off motion sickness the entire time. I was pleased with it until it unraveled in the last 5 minutes into a disappointing blend of The Blair Witch Project and Rosemary's Baby.

The Last Exorcism Part II picks up with Nell Sweetzer going to live in a girl's home after the tragic events of the first movie.

"The Last Exorcism Part II" Soils the Bed in a Way That Would Horrify Even Regan MacNeil
I never saw the first The Last Exorcism by Daniel Stamm, however; the sequel opens with a recap of the first film's final moments, and the strangest thing is how the original film, a found-footage type horror flick, has a sequel in Director Ed Gass-Donnelly's The Last Exorcism Part II that is, essentially, a straight-up, somewhat by-the-numbers horror film. I'm no found-footage fanatic, though I do enjoy the better ones, with The Last Broadcast, Chronicle, the original Paranormal Activity being some of my favorites. Working in favor of this follow-up, Ashley Bell is a pretty solid actress, starring in the original flick, and now reprising her role as Nell. She starts off quite meek, however about thirty or so minutes into the film, she begins exuding a strength that the character needs to endure the craziness ahead. And there's plenty of it.

Behind the Candelabra, Made Of Stone, After Earth: this week's new films
Behind The Candelabra | The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone | After Earth | The Iceman | Thérèse Desqueyroux | Come As You Are | The Last Exorcism: Part II | 009 Re: Cyborg | Aguirre, Wrath Of God

Behind The Candelabra (15)

(Steven Soderbergh, 2013, Us) Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd. 118 mins

The fact that Hollywood wasn't interested in backing a story involving celebrity, dictator-style kitsch, cosmetic surgery, rhinestones, signet rings and poodles (oh, and gay people) proves once again that nobody there knows anything. Douglas is terrific as the flamboyant but needy Liberace, and this true-life relationship drama is both hilarious and empathetic, harking back to a pre-Aids era of innocence and excess. Rob Lowe's hair provides excellent support.

The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone (15)

(Shane Meadows, 2013, UK) 96 mins

If the Roses were the greatest band in the world to you, then this is probably the greatest doc in the world. Meadows,...

'The Last Exorcism 2' review: Diabolical dirge full of cheap shocks
Ashley Bell
Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly; Screenwriter Damien Chazelle, Ed Gass-Donnelly; Starring: Ashley Bell, Julia Garner, Spencer Treat Clark; Running time: 88 mins; Certificate: 15

Abandoning the found footage trope failed to work for horror sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, nor does it pay dividends for the similarly dire The Last Exorcism 2. In place of the shaky camera emerges a very wobbly plot that leaves nobody trembling, an awkward regurgitation of cheap and overused shock tactics that flails its contorted limbs in search of a genuine scare to grab hold of.

2010's The Last Exorcism managed to muster a reasonable degree of interest through the strength of its lead character Reverend Cotton Marcus, a captivating yet phoney exorcist who stumbles across the real thing. The teenage subject of the possession, Ashley Bell's country girl Nell, is the focus of a sequel which tracks her placement in a New Orleans foster home...

‘The Last Exorcism Part 2′ Review
Stars: Ashley Bell, Julia Garner, Spencer Treat Clark, David Jensen, Tarra Riggs, Louis Herthum, Muse Watson, Erica Michelle, Sharice A. Williams | Written by Ed Gass-Donnelly, Damien Chazelle | Directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly

The Last Exorcism Part 2 is a somewhat incongruous title and the film itself bears little resemblance to the first instalment from 2010, produced like this effort by Eli Roth, a sleeper hit which made over 10 times its initial production budget in its opening weekend in the Us alone. On the back of mixed to positive reviews and name recognition that all film studios like, The Last Exorcism gets a second parts which somewhat takes away from the title of the first film, but does tries to shake things up a bit, certainly more than most horror franchises do.

Unlike the first film which relied heavily on found footage, this time its only on show here in a recap of events...
