At Les Arcs European Film Festival in December, Franco-German co-productions were in the spotlight in a panel moderated by Screen International.
The talk focused on the current state of co-production between France and Germany through the prism of two case studies: Mia Hansen-Love’s Things To Come, starring Isabelle Huppert, and Stéphane Robelin’s Mr Stein Goes Online, starring Pierre Richard.

Paris-based Memento Films International (Mfi) will launch sales on French filmmaker Xavier Giannoli’s upcoming drama The Apparition at the forthcoming edition of Unifrance’s Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris (Jan 12-16).
Vincent Lindon will star as a journalist sent on a mission by the Vatican to investigate reports of a saintly apparition in a small French village. What he discovers shakes his personal beliefs to the core.
The $8.1m (€7.7m) drama is due to shoot early 2017 for a spring 2018 delivery. Olivier Delbosc’s Paris-based Curiosa Films is producing.
In the meantime, Lindon, who won the Cannes Palme d’Or for best actor for his performance in social drama The Measure Of A Man in 2015, will hit the big screen this year in the role of Auguste Rodin in Jacques Doillon’s bio-pic Rodin capturing the life of the legendary French sculptor.

The 24 producers from Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will participate in the sixth edition of the networking platform, which will run Sept 9-12 during the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 10-20).
Plt is targeted at producers who have had previous experience in working on international co-productions and now have projects in the pipeline that could be interesting for the international market.

The Venice Film Market will showcase 15 projects seeking completion financing.
Now in its second year, the Venice Film Market’s European Gap-Financing Market, which runs September 4-5 in 2015, will highlight 15 film in search of completion funding.
To qualify, each film must already have secured 70% of its financing. They will have the opportunity to close their international funding by having one-on-one meetings with potential financiers, distributors, sales agents, post-production companies and film funds.
Last year, the Vfm welcomed 261 distributors and 66 sales agents to the market. A total of 1,500 film professionals from 57 countries attended.

German distributors Neue Visionen and Salzgeber & Co. Medien each acquired a raft of new titles at this year’s European Film Market (Efm).
Berlin-based Neue Visionen continued the run of French titles in its line-up by securing the rights to Eric Besnard’s comedy The Sense Of Wonder and Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar’s tragicomedy Once In A Lifetime, currently riding high in the French box office, from TF1 International.
Last year saw Neue Visionen post over 3.5 million admissions at the German box office with the Christian Clavier comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings, and it will release its next French comedy, Jean-Paul Rouve’s Les Souvenirs with Serial star Chantal Lauby, in German cinemas on March 23.
In addition, Neue Visionen picked up Japanese film-maker Naomi Kawase’s CineMart 2014 project An-Sweet Red Bean Paste from German co-producer Twenty Twenty Vision Filmproduktion and Assad Fouladkar’s German-Lebanese comedy Halal Sex from producer Razor Film Produktion.

The event’s two-day programme (Oct 1-2) during this year’s Filmfest Hamburg will include seminars, pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings and a Hamburg location tour.
The ten European producers coming to Hamburg are drawn from the pool of Efp’s former Producers on the Move, including the UK’s Isabelle Stead (Human Films), Luxembourg’s Donata Rotunno (Tarantula), Norway’s Silje Hopland Eik (Cinenord Kidstory) and Spain’s Antonio Saura (Zampa Audiovisual).

The Plus Minus One line-up of eight projects includes the third feature from Slovakian filmmaker Mira Fornay. Cook, F—k, Kill (Frogs With No-Tongues) is an absurdist drama about domestic violence.

Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily, Camino head of distribution, acquisitions and sales Kamran Sardar Khan revealed that sci-fi drama Der Polder and the comedy Metal Train will be co-produced via Camino’s parent company Niama Film.
The Stuttgart-based distributor will be a minority partner on Samuel Schwarz’s Der Polder will be produced by Switzerland’s Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion, Kam(m)acher GmbH, and Niama Film with backing from broadcasters Swr and Srf and Bundesamt für Kultur (Bak) and Zürcher Filmstiftung.
Campaigns with an augmented reality game and a MP3 audiowalk based on the film’s storyline have already been running in various Swiss towns to generate interest in the project.
Principal photography is set to begin in Zurich this March, with theatrical release planned for spring 2015 by Camino Filmverleih in Germany and Stammfilm in Switzerland...

If you love Downton Abbey but loathe the hiatus, IFC might have you covered. According to Variety, the independent distributor have snatched up Donald Rice‘s Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, a film about rich people acting British and romantic in a period setting.
It’s good, though. I saw the film at Tribeca this past April, finding it to be a well-tuned mixture of comedy and aching longing that you don’t get quite enough of in theaters nowadays. (Our review reflects my own thoughts pretty well.) The cast is pretty impressive one, by the way, with Felicity Jones and Luke Treadaway (Attack the Block) proving capable as two former lovers who, perhaps, against all reason, want to get back together. (The likes of Elizabeth McGovern and Mackenzie Crook add to the background.) It’s very mannered and detailed, the sort of thing you’d expect from this kind of story.

The 2011 edition of Mumbai Film Festival can boast of a strong French connection. Not only does it include a strong line-up of French films in a special section, but it will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cannes Critics Week by presenting a retrospective of 25 films.
The special section called ‘Rendez-vous with French Cinema’ will be co-organized with the French Embassy in India and Unifrance. For those who remember, this is the fourth edition of the event in Mumbai which has been merged with the Mumbai Film Festival this year. The past three editions were held separately as film festivals. This section will bring to Mumbai some of the critically acclaimed contemporary French films which include The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius, The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Robert Guédiguian and Declaration of War by ValérieDonzelli.
