The Canceled Hellraiser Prequel That Would Have Cast A Dark Knight Actor As Pinhead
Image
The "Hellraiser" movies, which originate from Clive Barker's "The Hellbound Heart" novella, have inflicted legendary suffering on their victims for almost 40 years. In that time, the franchise has traveled everywhere from New York City to medieval France to even outer space. Regardless of the location, however, one thing remains constant: The Hell Priest, aka Pinhead, and the Cenobites have such great sights to show anyone bold (or merely careless) enough to summon them using the Lament Configuration (a puzzle box with hellish powers).

In the original 1987 "Hellraiser" film, Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) sets in motion the chain of events that befall his family at the hands of the Cenobites. However, all we learn about Frank is that he acquired the puzzle box, got punished, escaped from Hell, and rekindled an affair with his brother's wife while she delivered blood sacrifices to restore him. The time between him finding the...

6 Mental Health Monster Movies to Double Feature with ‘The Killgrin’
Image
There’s a popular theory about how nightmares may have evolved as a natural form of exposure therapy where our brains simulate encounters with our deepest fears in order to better prepare us for the horrors of the waking world. Funnily enough, psychologists claim that consuming horror media can have the same cathartic effects in real life, which is likely the reason why we see so many scary movies incorporate relatable horrors into their stories – horrors like the suffering that can arise from living with a mental illness.

And in honor of Joanna Tsanis’ The Killgrin personifying mental anguish as a literal monster that feeds off of its victims’ misery, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six Mental Health Monster Movies. After all, the horror genre has a long and celebrated history of crafting memorable antagonists inspired by the darkest recesses of the human mind.

For the purposes of this list,...

Hulu is About to Lose an Acclaimed Indie Thriller Critics Say “Refuses to comfort or console”
Image
Streaming platforms are always mixing things up. Something comes onto one of the platforms, something else makes its exit from said platform. I prefer the reliably of physical media, but that doesn’t stop me from subscribing to more streaming services than I care to admit. What can I say? I like options. If you’d like the option to watch the 2022 horror film Resurrection on Hulu, I suggest you act with extreme haste. The flick is slated to leave the platform shortly and you don’t want to miss your window of opportunity.

When does Resurrection leave Hulu?

Writer/director Andrew Semans’ scrappy indie horror Resurrection leaves the Hulu platform on April 27th.

The film features the inimitable Rebecca Hall in the lead role. If her name sounds familiar, that may be because she also toplined the endlessly atmospheric David Bruckner horror film The Night House. Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper,...

How Bad Timing Got A Hellraiser Reboot Project Cancelled
Image
The mind of a hedonistic criminal is our entry point into Clive Barker's 1986 horror novella, "The Hellbound Heart." This man, Frank Cotton, acquires a puzzle box which, once solved, supposedly morphs into a portal to an extradimensional pleasure realm. However, when Frank solves the puzzle, frightening, sadomasochistic creatures emerge and subject him to the extremes of the pleasure-pain spectrum. After being captured by these beings (who call themselves Cenobites), Frank finds a way to escape, return to Earth, and seek new excesses of depravity involving his brother's wife and his niece.

Such is the premise of Barker's "Hellraiser," which brought "The Hellbound Heart" to life in vivid, uncompromising shades. This 1987 film — which quickly spawned a popular horror franchise — explores extremity and excess, why humans crave it, and how the Cenobites deal it out. Barker imbues these beings with greater moral ambiguity in the initial "Hellraiser" films, describing them as "demons to some,...

11 Terrifying Cursed Objects in Horror Movies That Will Haunt You
Image
There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”

While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.

Here are more cursed object movies in horror movies we’ll never forget.

Jacob Tremblay & Aaron Paul Will Unleash Evil in ‘The Night House’ for ‘Insidious’ Producer
Image
Jacob Tremblay (Room) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) will star in The Night House for producer Steven Schneider.

Not to be confused with David Bruckner‘s 2020 film of the same name, The Night House is based on the 2023 novel by Jo Nesbø, whose work was previously adapted in 2007’s The Snowman.

Tremblay and Paul will play different aged versions of the protagonist, Richard, in the psychological horror film. It’s set to shoot this summer in Álava, Spain.

In the wake of his parents’ recent death, high schooler Richard has been sent to live with relatives in the remote town of Ballantyne. One day, during an innocent prank call in a phone booth, Richard shockingly witnesses his classmate violently get sucked into the phone receiver and disappear without a trace.

Police suspect Richard to be responsible, and no one believes his story except Karen, a fellow teenage outsider. As Richard...

Rabbit Trap Review: Dev Patel Stars In A Blend Of Cosmic And Folk Horror [Sundance]
Image
What's the difference between folk horror and cosmic horror? Those two particular subgenres of horror films are a bit of a conundrum — they have arguably the oldest roots of all forms of horror, but they're relatively new when it comes to their definitions. In layman's terms, cosmic horror tends to refer to the type of fear elicited by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the idea that there are natural, ancient, and eternal forces on Earth and in the universe that are beyond human comprehension. Folk horror typically involves mythology, folklore, and religions that are specific to a certain region or culture. You can see from those loose definitions how one could easily be confused for the other, as well as how both are complimentary enough to co-exist in the same film. Several recent cosmic horror films (like Ben Wheatley's "In the Earth") have elements of folk horror, and some...

5 Best Movies Like The Watchers On Netflix
Image
In 2024, Ishana Night Shyamalan released her directorial debut, The Watchers, which is now streaming on Netflix alongside some other incredible and similar horror entries. Notably, Shyamalan is the daughter of the famed director, M. Night Shyamalan, who helmed iconic films such as The Sixth Sense and Split. Ishana Shyamalan's film, released in June 2024, seems to take inspiration from her father's work. The Watchers is a supernatural horror film centered on Mina, a young artist who finds herself trapped in a strange bunker in the forest, constantly threatened by violent creatures known as Watchers.

Although The Watchers did not earn the greatest critical reviews, receiving a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is a movie that still has plenty to offer. The Watchers has an addictively eerie quality to it which is perfect for a horror film, and is reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan's work. Furthermore, The Watchers boasts a strong cast,...

Clive Barker’s ‘Hellraiser’ Returns to Theaters in February via Fathom Events
Image
Stephen King famously once said, “I have seen the future of horror fiction, and his name is Clive Barker.” That future was realized when Barker brought his transgressive writing to the big screen in Hellraiser.

For the first time in 37 years, the 1987 horror classic is returning to theaters on February 5 and 6 via Fathom Events.

Newly remastered in 4K, the movie will be accompanied by “Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser,” a 2004 interview with the actor about his first appearance as the horror icon Pinhead.

Hellraiser sees a couple move into their new home, unaware that something evil lurks beneath the floorboards of the dilapidated house — something that wants human blood.

Based on Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart, the film stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Sean Chapman, Oliver Smith, and Bradley.

Hellraiser spawned nine sequels — the first seven of which featured Bradley reprising his role as Pinhead...

10 Horror Movies Where The Atmosphere Is Scarier Than The Movie Itself
Image
The horror genre is known for its scares and tension, but many incredible horror movies are more atmospheric than they are inherently scary. In fact, some of the best horror movies of all time are known for their terrifying environments. While these horror movies do not suffer in any way by having such engaging environments, there are several in which the fear factor of the setting stands out against the story.

This is incredibly common in horror films with the most wild premises, but it includes more horror than just the most incredulous. In fact, this extends to films in all sorts of genres, including different obscure horror genres. Regardless, the environments built up in horror films like The Ritual and Rosemary's Baby are legendary, even more frightening than the actual films themselves.

'Maxxxine's Ti West and Halsey Re-Team for Dark Comedy Series
Image
Some people can just do it all, can't they? MaXXXine actress and acclaimed singer/songwriter, Halsey, is adding screenwriter to her resume — and she's re-teaming with the director of the aforementioned film, Ti West, to turn it all into a television show. The series, currently titled "Bloodlust" is already under development at Amazon Prime Video, and is amassing quite a team of creative collaborators.

In an exclusive report from Variety, Halsey will serve as the series' creator, writer, and executive producer. The series will be showrun by executive producer Mark Friedman, who's previously worked on Severence, Wayward Pines, and Dispatches from Elsewhere, in addition to recent work on Dune: Prophecy (in a consulting producer capacity). Halsey's manager, Anthony Li, will also executive produce the show.

Though details are mostly under wraps at the moment, it feels safe to assume that the dark comedy will have some interesting, and perhaps horrific,...

5 Horror Franchises That Should Go Christmas Next
Image
There was something special about seeing Art the Clown kill people in a Santa suit, wasn’t there? The visual subversion of what is usually a holly, jolly, spirit of Christmas elicits reactions few can manage. Then there was all the glorious violence. But what impressed me most about Terrifier 3 (other than its massive box office) is the fact that it doesn’t overly rely on Christmas for its structure. The film taught us that including the holiday doesn’t mean it has to overpower the narrative. Christmas simply serves as a way to show colorful visuals, play familiar songs to establish a tone, and expectations to easily subvert. Because of that, it manages to be a Christmas movie while also entirely standing on its own as an entry in the world of Terrifier. But it got me thinking: what other horror franchises should take the holiday plunge?

10 Horror Movies That Are About To Get A Remake
Image
Remakes and reboots are all the rage as studios rely on resurrecting popular movies to garner the interest of nostalgic fans and new audiences, and it's no different for the horror genre. Despite the criticisms against remakes as cash grabs, the remake resurgence remains strong. The horror movie genre is particularly filled with remakes of cult classics and iconic slashers that breathe life into beloved horror franchises and revive overlooked and underrated terrifying movies.

While it is understandable to be cautious about remakes of beloved films, revisiting classics can sometimes allow for new, equally interesting interpretations. There have been some horror movie remakes that managed to find their voice while honoring the original story, even though this doesn't always happen. The list of upcoming horror remakes includes both projects that have been in development hell for a while as well as films that are set to premier relatively soon.

10 Scariest Supernatural Horror Movies That Will Keep You Up All Night
Image
Supernatural horror movies have a way of getting under viewers' skin with curses, ghosts, demonic possessions and all the fascinatingly terrible occult-related fears. From The Ritual to Mama to The Exorcist, these movies have a reputation for being a little bit too scary. Even for nonbelievers, the extremely terrifying ones can have long aftereffects.

Many fans have reported being kept up all night after watching certain movies. Though what scares one person may not be the same for others, fear is something that everyone can relate to. In many cases, fear can be infectious.

The Ritual Dives Into Forest Fear

Without flashy jump scares and flat characters, The Ritual builds its horror on suspense, giving just enough glimpses while letting viewers' imaginations run free. Besides being probably one of the scariest movies out there, The Ritual is also highly rated. It keeps viewers up at night not only because of the horror,...

V/H/S: Viral (2014) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Has there been a more unlikely series of horror films than the V/H/S franchise? By the very nature of the sub-genre, anthology films don’t typically lend themselves to being series as even the segments within their own movies are almost always unrelated. Sure, TV has found a way to make it work in things like American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy or the criminally underrated Channel Zero that ran 4 seasons. Side note, if you have Shudder, please go check out Channel Zero. There are exceptions of course with The ABCs of Death or the Creepshow series but most of them are one and done. You also have nonrelated ones that use the same actors and directors like the wonderful things Amicus films was doing opposite Hammer in the 60s and 70s but again, these weren’t sequels at all. V/H/S has defied all odds and with a new film having just been released,...

15 Scariest Creature Features From the Last 5 Years, Ranked
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Creature features have been a popular part of the horror genre since 1913 with Universal Studios' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and has expanded since with advancements in practical effects, amazing suit-acting, more powerful CGI tools and most importantly, creative storytelling. The last five years, in particular, have offered quite the buffet of terrifying creature features, from hidden gems released on streaming platforms to theatrical hits that have completely elevated the genre.

The creature feature remains one of the scariest subgenres in horror, confronting viewers with monstrous beings of all forms and origins. While fans eagerly await the remakes of classic titles like Wolf Man (directed by Leigh Whannell) and The Blob (directed by David Bruckner), there are thankfully plenty of other worthwhile creature features released in the last five years to sate their appetites.

V/H/S – Ranking the 7 Anthology Horror Films
Image
One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.

7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

While there are moments of Viral that stand out to this day, the overall style and stories rarely live up to the premise. Outside of this franchise, some segments would feel like a great little horror entry, but when the footage does not make sense as something that might come from a VHS,...

All 7 V/H/S Movies, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.

The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. The only real rule is that it has to be found footage, but even that is malleable. Stories in the series are told from camcorders, GoPros,...

The Correct Order To Watch The V/H/S Horror Movies
Image
The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.

VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. For a whole generation, this was the best way to see classic movies for the first time, and the technology, for however...

The Ritual (2017) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Apart from trying to avoid back-to-back Stephen King, trust me, he will be coming back this year as its kind of inevitable, I also like looking at modern horror adaptations. This is two-fold as the internet has done the 80s and 90s to death but also because there are some genuinely original and fantastic IPs that have yet to get the spotlight they deserve. The most recent example of this is The Ruins which is a horror one hit wonder from Scott Smith, yeah, he did other things but that was his only horror novel, and that’s a cool and original piece. The Ritual wasn’t one of those immediate releases where the book was churned into a movie before the book had time to cook and it is the only adaptation from a very U.K author’s works. While the movie did extremely well on Netflix and...

The Correct Order To Watch The Hellraiser Movies
Image
Clive Barker's 1987 film "Hellraiser" has always existed a little off to the side of the usual rogue's gallery of 1980s horror slashers. Its central demon, originally credited as Lead Cenobite (Doug Bradley), is usually mentioned alongside other notorious cinematic serial killers like Michael Myers from the "Halloween" movies, Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" movies, and Freddy Krueger from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies ... but he is not quite the same. The Lead Cenobite, better known as Pinhead, isn't a vicious killer who murders teenagers, but a sex deity, culled from a parallel dimension where physical pain has become indivisible with sexual pleasure. Pinhead will definitely kill you, but he will do so with extreme kink. The nails in his face were placed there as part of an extreme S&m game.

"Hellraiser" began its life as "The Hellbound Heart," Barker's 1986 novella. His film adaptation isn't quite as sexed-up,...

The 5 Best Summer Horror Movies You Need To Watch
Image
The summer horror movie subgenre spoils us all with an embarrassment of riches, but this also means that whenever people come up with a list of recommendations, the same players make an appearance again and again. At this point, you shouldn't need an online list to tell you that "Jaws" is the ultimate July 4th viewing experience. And considering that "Midsommar," "Summer of '84," and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" have the season in the title of the movie, these are also no-brainer suggestions for summer horror movies. Summer is also the season for summer camp movies, so "Sleepaway Camp," the entire "Friday the 13th" franchise, parodies like "The Final Girls," homages like "Fear Street: 1978," and the entire roster of Cabin in the Woods horror movies are all easy picks.

Then there are the countless folk horror films in the vein of "The Wicker Man" that all scream "summer,...

Toni Collette certainly fell into that category with Ari Aster's Hereditary in 2018, but the Academy failed to acknowledge her talent. A couple of years later came another horror performance that was just as excellent. Rebecca Hall starred in David Bruckner's The Night House, but despite her acting prowess, she didn't get any recognition either. Both superb films take a deep and terrifying look into grief, but the latter has a wallop of a twist. It was initially conceived as a Hellraiser reboot, but rather than be sucked down by a franchise which had long ago crumbled, it was allowed to be its own monster, a paralyzing fright fest with an ending you won't see coming.

A24 isn't slowing down when it comes to pumping out films. We have A24 horror movies such as MaXXXine, Heretic and The Front Room slated to be released in theaters this year, and now we've just learned that the cinematic powerhouse will be producing and financing a new horror thriller titled Mice. Not much is known about the movie at the moment, but we shared everything we know so far below.

American film director David Bruckner is signed on to direct the film from a screenplay co-written by Todd Spence and Zak White. This marks Spence and White's first major sale at a major studio. They're longtime collaborators who have previously worked together on many short films. One of their most recent collaborations was co-writing the scripts for two episodes of the horror anthology series Creepshow.

Bruckner is best known for working on the cult anthology horror series V/H/S. The...

Mice: Hellraiser’s David Bruckner to direct A24 horror thriller
Image
David Bruckner, who has directed The Ritual, The Night House, and the Hellraiser reboot, as well as segments of The Signal, V/H/S, Southbound, V/H/S/85, and episodes of the Shudder Creepshow series, is gearing up to direct a new remake of The Blob – and Deadline reports that he has already lined up another genre project. Bruckner will be directing the mysterious horror thriller Mice for A24.

Details on the plot of Mice are being kept under wraps. Whatever the story it is, it has come from the minds of writing duo Todd Spence and Zak White. Spence and White also have Creepshow experience, as they wrote the stories Doodles, George Romero in 3D, and Something Burrowed, Something Blue for the fourth season of the series. They have also written and co-directed several short films. A24 picking up the Mice package marks the first time Spence and White...

‘Mice’ – David Bruckner Directing Mysterious Horror Movie for A24
Image
David Bruckner (V/H/S, Southbound, The Ritual, The Night House, Hellraiser) has set up his next horror movie, with Deadline reporting today that Bruckner will direct a horror movie project titled Mice that’s being financed and produced by the horror masters at A24.

Deadline notes in their exclusive report, “Todd Spence and Zak White penned the script and the spec marks their first sale to a major studio, quite the sale for first time scribes.”

It’s a horror movie, we know that much, but plot details for Mice are being kept under wraps for now. If it brought A24 on board, we expect it’s a damn good horror script. Stay tuned.

A24 has been one of the leading forces within the genre for the last several years, with projects on the horizon including MaXXXine, The Front Room, Heretic, and “Crystal Lake.”

It’s a good time to be a horror fan.

‘Bit’ Is a Little Vampire Film With Plenty of Bite [Horror Queers Podcast]
Lisa Brühlmann
Trans-formative

After ending last month with Lisa Brühlmann’s female coming-of-age tale Blue My Mind (listen), we’ve spent June discussing Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (listen) and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s 1997 sequel Leprechaun 4: In Space (listen).

Now we’re back in YA territory with Brad Michael Elmore‘s trans vampire tale Bit, but the 2019 film is quite a bit more fun than most coming-of-age texts.

Laurel (Nicole Maines) is a recent high school graduate that moves to L.A. to crash on her older brother Mark (James Paxton)’s couch and immediately falls in with a squad of female-identifying vampires. But fang life is complicated by Laurel’s refusal to feed or kill, which leads to friction with the coven’s leader Duke (Diana Hopper), who warns that Laurel’s bloodlust will put them all in danger.

Lunar luck.

After concluding May with a discussion of Lisa Brühlmann’s female coming-of-age tale Blue My Mind (listen) and kicking off June reevaluating the unfairly maligned third act of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (listen), we’re…..staying in outer space to marvel at the wacky antics of Lubdan the Leprechaun (Warwick Davis) in Brian Trenchard-Smith‘s 1997 sequel Leprechaun 4: In Space!

In the film, the Leprechaun abducts Princess Zarina (Rebekah Carlton), a member of an alien planet’s royalty, in an attempt to wed her and become her home planet’s new ruler. Unfortunately for him, a platoon of well-armed soldiers, led by Master Sergeant “Metal Head” Hooker (Tim Colceri), arrive to foil his plans. Not easily defeated, however, the feisty Leprechaun bursts out of one of the solider’s penises and continues to battle the soldiers while also contending with the warped scientist Dr. Mittenhand (Guy Siner).

Defending the Controversial Last Act of Danny Boyle’s ‘Sunshine’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Gregg Araki at an event for Mysterious Skin (2004)
Payload.

After heavy discussions of Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin (listen) and Lisa Brühlmann’s Blue My Mind (listen) – with a stop-over to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s Alien (listen) – we’re headed to space with Danny Boyle‘s 2007 collaboration with Alex Garland: Sunshine.

The film features an all-star international cast, including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, Cliff Curtis and Rose Byrne as scientists/astronauts on a mission to restart a dying sun before the Earth freezes.

Sunshine features all of the usual space movie tropes, including dangerous external repair job, a mysterious Sos beacon, and a disastrous previous mission, but the film’s legacy is an unconventional third act that turns the film into a slasher courtesy of mysterious character Pinbacker (Mark Strong).

Will the crew of Icarus II survive to save the world or will they be picked off one by one?...

Hulu's Hellraiser Reboot Star Addresses Possible Sequel
Image
Hellraiser 2's odds have just improved. Odessa A'zion, who portrayed recovering addict Riley in the 2022 Hellraiser reboot, recently shared that there have been talks of a follow-up project.

During an interview with Screen Rant to promote her upcoming drama film Fresh Kills, A'zion was asked if she had been approached to return for a potential Hellraiser sequel. "Oh god, I'm gonna get in so much trouble if I talk about anything," she said with a laugh before confirming, "I've heard things here and there, nothing ever official, and I don't think it's ever gonna be official. But, also, you never know. You never know."

Hellraiser 2 Return Gets Intriguing Response From Star Of Hulu's Hit Horror Reboot
Image
Odessa A'zion cautiously hints at a potential return for the Hellraiser reboot sequel, acknowledging there are ongoing conversations for a follow-up. Producer Keith Levine recently offered a promising update on the development of the follow-up, teasing it will be "even crazier and even more awesome." A'zion's return as Riley in the sequel could redeem past mistakes of the franchise, offering a chance to explore the Cenobites' history in depth and not put the returning final girl on a darker path, as was the case with Ashley Laurence's Kirsty.

With nearly two years passed since the franchise's reboot became a hit for Hulu, Odessa A'zion has an interesting response to her potential Hellraiser 2 return. A'zion led the cast of the 2022 Hellraiser movie as Riley, a recovering addict whose attempts to bounce back while living with her brother, his boyfriend and their roommate are upended when she discovers the Lament...

The Godzilla And Kong Movies Need A New Director – Here Are Our Picks
Image
The MonsterVerse has, somewhat quietly, become one of the most reliable franchises going in Hollywood at the moment. For a full decade dating back to 2014's "Godzilla" right up through this year's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," these films have built up a loyal audience with no signs of fatigue on the part of the viewers. While Warner Bros. and Legendary are quickly looking to get a new installment going, they will need a new director, as we recently learned that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the helm. So, who should take his place?

Wingard is the only filmmaker to direct two MonsterVerse installments, having helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" as well as "The New Empire," which now ranks as the highest-grossing "Godzilla" movie ever. So sure, the studio would probably have liked him to return, but he's busy with other projects. Besides, that just opens the...

The Netflix Movie That Combined Survival Horror With Cult Folklore

Based on Adam Nevill's 2011 novel, The Ritual has all the makings of a great horror film. A group of friends set out for a hiking trip in Sweden after the recent loss of a friend to a tragedy it already sounds like a disaster in waiting. While the setup may make The Ritual seem like another low-budget survival horror film, the film presents more than it offers with its chilling atmosphere, sound effects, and ability to hold tension. Directed by David Bruckner and written by Joe Barton, The Ritual places its different elements artistically to provide a fascinating and terrifying, underrated horror movie. It also has something to offer all kinds of horror film fans as it successfully plays with the ropes of both survival films and cult horror.

Rebecca Hall To Direct & Star In Mother-Daughter Drama ‘Four Days Like Sunday’ For See-Saw Films
Image
Exclusive: On the heels of her acclaimed directorial debut Passing, Rebecca Hall has found her next filmmaking vehicle in Four Days Like Sunday, a mother-daughter drama inspired by her own history, which she’s written to direct and will star in for See-Saw Films.

Set in the mid 1990s, the film follows 12-year-old Jane as she begins to rebel against her role as proxy-carer for her mother Sylvia (Hall), a recently divorced and ever so slightly fading Broadway diva. During a long weekend break between concert dates, Sylvia hosts Benton, Chris and Rahim, three male dancers from her current tour, at her anachronistically grand country house. She is also expecting the arrival of Dale, her handsome younger boyfriend. As Jane does her best to protect her mother from everything that threatens to disturb her delicate equilibrium, she moves quietly from childhood into something else-wiser, freer, and more alone.

David Bruckner’s The Blob remake will honor the practical effects of earlier versions
Image
Back in 1958, director Irvin Yeaworth brought the world a really fun creature feature called The Blob, which was followed by Larry Hagman’s late-to-the-party sequel Beware! The Blob (a.k.a. Son of Blob) in 1972 and an awesome remake directed by Chuck Russell – which ranks as one of the best remakes ever made – in 1988. We’ve been hearing rumblings of another Blob remake for over a decade now. Rob Zombie was attached to write and direct a new version of The Blob for a brief period of time, and commissioned some concept art before leaving the project. The Conjuring writers Chad and Carey Hayes wrote a draft of the script that reimagined the titular being as the B.L.O.B., which stood for Biological Lethal Organic Bomb. Their script was scrapped. Later, Con Air director Simon West was going to be helming the film, with Samuel L. Jackson signed...

The Blob Remake Gets Exciting Update From Hellraiser Reboot Producer
Image
Keith Levine, the Hellraiser reboot producer, disclosed updates regarding the anticipated remake of The Blob. Recent reports revealed Warner Bros. Discovery's involvement in developing a new rendition of The Blob earlier this month.

In an exclusive reveal to Comic Book, film producer Levine has unveiled some tantalizing details about the forthcoming remake of the cult classic The Blob. Expressing his enthusiasm, Levine stated, "Well, I personally am very excited about – because another one of these 'my parents are out movies' that I'm watching at a young age is The Blob - which we're doing at Warner Bros., also with [Hellraiser director] David Bruckner ... The Chuck Russell movie just, as a kid, it f**ked me up big time."

Related Why 1988's The Blob Remake Is an Underrated Gem of Horror Though an obscure film in today's eyes, 1988's The Blob is a smart and fun horror remake that deserves love and admiration.

Hellraiser reboot may be getting a sequel
Image
A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.

Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

Levine tells ComicBook.com in a brand new chat, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but [David] Bruckner is involved in those conversations.”

“We spent a lot of time and energy relaunching that world,” Levine continues. “A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design, figuring out how we’re going to pull them off, and we learned so much.

Hulu's 'Hellraiser' Could Get a Sequel, Says Keith Levine
