Chicago – When “Torchwood: Miracle Day” premiered on Starz, I was completely up for the ride. My 4/5 review displayed a little bit of concern given that the show was often 5/5 in its original BBC America airings (and in the brilliant “Children of Earth”) but I held out hope that the show would iron out its wrinkles and deliver on the potential of its clever set-up. In fact, the opposite happened. Stretched to meet a running time that the writers couldn’t deliver on and ultimately cheesy where the original “Torchwood” had been edgy, “Miracle Day” is a disappointment. The Blu-ray release is still strong and there are some things to like here, but only diehard fans should apply (see every episode and “Children” before this…twice) and they’ll likely be the most disappointed.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
What works about “Miracle Day”? The premise — that everyone stopped dying one day and how...

Patrick Warburton joined the ranks of men who've offended the sensibilities of their wives and other women on "Top Gear" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on Hist), when he revealed that he named his muscle car after Angelina Jolie even though it annoys Mrs. Warburton.
So just why is Warburton's prized 1969 Dodge Charger called Angelina? Because it's "dark, sexy, mean [and] sultry," just like Ms. Jolie herself, he joked.
Warburton then revealed that his motor home is also named after a famous actress and sex symbol. "The motor home is named Pammy, after Pam Anderson. Just big, bodacious ... and, also it just kind of irritates the wife so it's funny."
When host Rutledge Wood suggested that maybe he might want to consider naming something after the Mrs. for a change, Warburton demurred, saying it wouldn't be as much fun.

Torchwood: Miracle Day continues, as we find the governments of the world re-categorizing life. Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) returns home to Wales to investigate the segregation of the ill and the injured into Overflow Camps, while the rest of Torchwood is joined by Doctor Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur) to investigate the American camps, under the guidance of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).
During TARDISblend 32, we review the events of The Categories Of Life, in which we drill down into many criticisms we have of the episode in addition to the series as a whole. We comment on Gwen's return to and mission in Wales, and discuss the pivotal moments for the character of Vera Juarez during the episode.
Performances seemed a little off this time around, and even Bill Pullman wasn't up to his usual best. We also look at some past Torchwood episodes, and make some new recommendations for...

Warning: This post contains Major spoilers for Torchwood: Miracle Day episode 5, “Categories of Life,” which aired Friday night in America, and will air Friday, August 12th in the UK.
Jk Rowling once said if you are writing children’s books, you need to be a ruthless killer. But the truth of her quip extends far beyond the world of Harry Potter, reaching into science fiction and fantasy universes across the space-time continuum. It’s a great irony, really: If you are writing stories in a genre many people consider nothing more than escapism, sometimes you’ve got to brutally murder your characters to take the story where you want it to go.
Nobody knows that better than Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies.
Torchwood was, of course, conceived as a spin-off of Britain’s longest-running, most-beloved fantasy series. A Doctor Who for grown-ups. And while Torchwood’s characters were sexed up...

Warning: A very significant event happens in this episode. Please do not make mention of it in the comments section until after the story airs in the UK!
Here we are, half way through Miracle Day. We still haven’t gotten any real answers to what’s going on, but at least we’re seeing some glimmering hope of answers on the distant horizon.
This episode focused on the Torchwood gang running around inside overflow (concentration), camps on two different continents. Gwen (Eve Myles), with Rhys (Kai Owen), in tow, is running around in Cowbridge, UK, looking for her father who has been admitted to one of the camps while Rex (Mekhi Phifer), Dr Juarez (Arlene Tur), and Esther (Alexa Havins), all infiltrate a camp in California.
Inside these camps, we learn that people around the world are being classified under three categories. Category three means you’re fine.

Esther Drummond (Alexis Havins), is obviously a nice woman, but not, it must be said, the brightest star in the Eastern sky. Last week when we saw Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), try to rendezvous with his former CIA instructor, he was at least smart enough to do it at a distance and wait in the shadows to see what happens.
Esther displays no such smarts when, early in this episode, she goes to visit her sister. She finds out that her sister has gone around the bend and is living in a boarded-up house, absorbing rumors about diseases running rampant through major cities. She has two small children in the house, and Esther is understandably worried about them, so she calls Child Protective Services to investigate, then drives off, unaware that she’s picked up a tail (C Thomas Howell).
Meantime, the Torchwood team packs up and relocates to Los Angeles.

Torchwood: Miracle Day, Episode 3: “Dead of Night”
Written by Jane Espenson
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Airs Fridays at 10pm (Et) on Starz
Torchwood, a series about British agents tasked with defending the Earth from alien attack, has had an uneven run, to say the least. It started as an over-sexed, under character-developed Doctor Who spinoff and grew over two seasons to be a solid, if underwhelming, sci-fi actioner. Then the third season, dubbed Children of Earth, came out and was a revelation. It’s a gripping, intense miniseries (5 episodes), that sits alongside Battlestar Galactica and Firefly as some of the best sci-fi of the past 10 years. Now, in season four, we have Miracle Day. The premise of the season is that one day, everyone on Earth stops dying. People are still aging and being injured, but no one dies. At the same time, the Torchwood team is forced out...

When we last saw Captain Jack (John Barrowman), and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), they’d been captured by CIA officer Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), who’d ordered them to be arrested with plans to take them to the United States. And as the second episode of the season opens, we see him doing exactly that, putting them onto what appears to be a chartered 747 and heading back to DC with them and another CIA officer named Lyn Peterfield (Dichen Lackman). Rhys (Kai Owen), and the baby are left behind.
Back in America, Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins), gets more to do as she continues her investigations and tries to help out Rex. “Miracle Day – Rendition”
The second episode of the new season of Torchwood slows down a little, but still hands the viewer a lot to digest. Rex, who at the end of episode one had announced that he was extraditing the team to America, is being railroaded by a colleague and former lover, Lyn (played with effective evilness by Dichen Lachman), who is taking over the arrest. Rhys and Anwen are sent back home as Jack and Gwen are loaded on a plane for the states. Most of their time is spent on the flight, but even on a plane, a lot can happen.
Esther is suddenly making unwanted waves as she is trying to get more involved with the Torchwood investigation. Her inquiries and interest are catching the eye of someone that doesn’t want Torchwood to come out of this alive. However, the reasons for that are still a mystery.

Chicago – We didn’t get the screener in time to give you a heads up about the series premiere of Starz’s “Torchwood: Miracle Day” but we have seen episodes two and three and have some good news to end this long week — if you liked the first episode, don’t worry. It definitely doesn’t drop in quality. And if you worried a bit after that premiere that this wasn’t the same “Torchwood” you knew and loved, fret not, the program starts to really get into gear by the end of the third chapter and there’s little reason to be concerned.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
I’ll admit, being a big “Torchwood” fan, I was a bit concerned after episode one, which aired last Friday, July 8th, 2011 on Starz. The premiere felt a bit like a remake of something you know and love — similar but not quite the same.

Ever since long-time fans of the Torchwood series learned major changes would take place within the series (most notably the show’s move to the United States from its native U.K.), expressions of worry and doubt have dominated the conversation surrounding its return. But newbie cast member Arlene Tur, who plays ER doc Vera Juarez in the “don’t call it a reboot” installment, thinks the first episode, airing tonight, will quell their fears.
“Initially, I was thinking that maybe they wouldn’t like it because they’re coming to the U.S., but I think they should be...

There is perhaps no more polarizing, yet inspiring series on television than Torchwood. It provokes heated debate about the value of human life and our efforts to preserve it at all costs. But it also reminds us that there is an amazing world within the universe, which it has created, and it invites us to play there for a while. So while Torchwood will galvanize fans with its shocking deaths, it also makes one weep with joy for having been granted the privilege of knowing those wondrous characters.
As Torchwood returns for its fourth season, it promises to provide yet another shock-and-awe story. Having closed the book on the story of season three with the ultimate sacrifice, season four introduces a brand new story of adventure. With the show transplanting from the U.K. to the U.S. in search of greener pastures (not to mention the funding necessary for...

Torchwood star Arlene Tur has revealed more details about her character's romance with Rex (Mekhi Phifer). Phifer previously revealed to Digital Spy that the two characters will get together in Torchwood: Miracle Day. Tur told The TV Addict: "I believe crisis and proximity had a lot to do with their emotions." The actress added that Phifer's CIA operative Rex "exude[s] charm" and is "mysterious". "[Vera] was lost and didn't know what was going on, so she was curious," explained Tur. "He seemed to have the information and answers, so that was also (more)...

Torchwood star Arlene Tur has revealed new details about her character in Miracle Day. The actress told Collider that Dr. Vera Juarez will leave her medical surroundings and go undercover for the CIA in the ten-part sci-fi drama. "[We] take [Vera] out of her comfort zone so much," said Tur. "That was a joy for me... because it was a challenge, as an actress. I was expecting to be mostly in the E.R. and have my work be very medical, in general. It was such a bonus for me." Tur also confirmed that her character will have a romantic relationship with Rex (Mekhi Phifer) but admitted that Vera does not participate much in the show's action sequences. "It's more intellectual action that Vera gets," she explained. "All Vera's scenes are very intense, which was wonderful." She continued: "I thought (more)...

Most of us have trepidations over this whole Starz-is-taking-control-of-Torchwood-and-bringing-it-to-America thing and with good reason. Almost any foreign show that's been brought stateside has paled in comparison. And this isn't just any old, by the book import; this is a whackadoodie semi-revamp that will include original actors and characters, intermixed with new folks. Whenever I think about it, I begin to understand people trying out new meds: up and down and all over the place. I feel like Kramer when he was freaked out by something and he'd make lots of hand motions as his voice reverted to puberty. And all this new publicity isn't helping out much. Some of the pictures of Captain Jack Harkness make my heart sing and I long to run toward him, but then I see pics of the new people and most of them look dull and uninspired. The latest trailer, set to...

Jane Espenson has an incredible resume; after working as writer or producer on what seems like every genre show *ever* (seriously, how does she find the time? Does she have a Tardis?), she's about to get even busier. Today, she announced via Twitter that she would be working on Once Upon a Time, a fantasy TV series picked up by ABC earlier this week. Once Upon a Time stars Jennifer Morrison, a series regular on House and most recently seen on How I Met Your Mother, as a bail bondsman in the town of Storybrooke, surrounded by fairy tale characters engaged in a grim (!) battle for the future. Once Upon a Time also stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle, and Pirates of the Caribbean’s Lee Arenberg. It was created by Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis, executive producers of Lost and screenwriters of Tron: Legacy.

Ok, you know Torchwood is returning July 8th. And you know Bill Pullman is now part of the cast, joining John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen, and newcomers Lauren Ambrose, Alexa Havins, Mekhi Phifer, and Arlene Tur. You know this because it’s all been reported here on ComicMix, right?
