Exclusive: OneGate Media has picked up worldwide distribution rights for German crime series Asbestos from Pantaleon Films.
The five-part series launched on German public network Ard’s streamer Mediathek in January and achieved 3 million views in three days. This makes it the strongest series start on the platform.
It’s the latest acquisition for OneGate, which last year rebranded from Studio Hamburg Enterprises. Already in the catalog are Prime Video series German Crime Story: Deadlock and Lost in Fuseta, a crime drama based on the novel by Grimme Award Winner Holger Karsten Schmidt.
Asbestos comes from director Kida Khodr Ramadan and follows a promising 19-year-old Momo footballer whose dreams are left in tatters when he is sent to prison after being framed by his uncle for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s then faced by the choice of sticking to his principles and staying...

Monday’s Up Next: Germany session at this year’s European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin put the spotlight on a slew of upcoming series, spanning Hamburg’s Red Light district, Germany’s first female undercover cop and the Munich Olympic massacre.
Invited to the Berlinale studio, with some participants taking part online, several of Germany’s top creatives made the play date to talk with Julia Fidel, head of the Berlinale Series. Hanno Hackfort (“4 Blocks”), Jella Haase (“Lollipop Minster”), Lisa Kreimeyer (Netflix), Viviane Andereggen (“Tatort”), Christian Beetz (“Make Love”), Georg Tschurtschenthaler (“Viral Dreams”), and actor Detlev Buck were amongst those that took part.
The idea of the panel was to present new material straight from the editing room with many of the series still six months away from being seen. The session provided a first look at a number of projects nearing completion, including the comedy “Greenlight – German Genius,...

Luxembourgish-Egyptian director’s last film Sawah was acquired by Netflix.
Luxembourgish-Egyptian director Adolf El Assal has signed Lebanese-German actor Kida Khodr Ramadan and pioneering Egypt-born, Germany-raised actress Tua El Fawwal for his new feature Hooped.
It is El Assal’s third feature after 2019 comedy drama Sawah, starring Egyptian actor Karim Kassem as a Cairo-based DJ who loses his papers while on tour in Europe, which was acquired by Netflix for 46 territories in 2020.
Like that film, Hooped will combine a European and Middle East storyline, revolving around an aspiring entrepreneur and basketball whiz whose dreams take him from Luxembourg to Egypt via Canada.

WarnerMedia Germany has confirmed that Ricky Gervais is among the cast of its comedy series Greenlight – German Genius, which is now shooting in Berlin.
The eight-part TV satire stars Kida Khodr Ramadan (4 Blocks) as himself. It recounts a dramatized version of events after Ramadan’s real-life Twitter exchange with Gervais in 2018, in which the British comedian praised Ramadan’s performance in 4 Blocks.
In Greenlight, Ramadan convinces Gervais to give him the rights for a German adaptation of Extras. However, as he attempts to progress the show to production, he comes up against the fact that the Germans aren’t particularly known for their humor, and that there are not many international stars in the country.
Also in the cast are a host of known German actors, musicians, and comedians, including: Detlev Buck, Frederick Lau, Tom Schilling, Veysel Gelin, Olli Schulz, Heike Makatsch, Maria Furtwängler, Sascha Geršak, Katrin Bauerfeind, Britta Hammelstein,...

Following the cancellation of the Munich Film Festival in April, the event was declared dead for this year. Yet a re-think has seen the creation of a Film Fest Munich pop-up festival, which will take place at a drive-in cinema and an open-air venue.
Starting on July 15 and running through to the end of August, the festival will show seven German films as world premieres. These include Maggie Peren’s “Hello Again,” which will be distributed by Warner Bros., veteran director Klaus Lemke’s “A Call Girl For Ghosts” and the opener, actor Kida Khodr Ramadan’s directorial debut “In Berlin Wächst Kein Orangenbaum.”
Variety can also exclusively reveal that the festival will end on Aug. 26 with the German premiere of Ulrich Thomsen’s “Gutterbee,” with the Danish actor and director in attendance.

America isn’t the only country with a portion of its population rejecting refugee clemency. It’s also not the only one blinded to its hate when confronting the matter. Because that’s what it is to look down on someone worse off than you: hate. Blaming immigrants for “stealing” jobs and “ruining” neighborhoods exemplifies resentment. Just because your community backs this thought process doesn’t make it any less a product of bigotry, racism, and baseless entitlement. Suddenly citizens sympathetic to these outsiders struggling to survive on a basic human level are labeled traitors and made into enemies themselves. Soon enough life becomes “us versus them” until even the righteous must fall prey to desperation.
It’s this unfortunate reality that lies at the back of Ali Vatansever’s Turkey-set Saf. He introduces us to Istanbul’s Fikirtepe district, an area in the midst of an extreme gentrification-fueled overhaul...
