10 Sexiest Movies You’ve Never Heard Of
Focus Features

Sex and the cinema have always gone hand in hand, predominantly because they are both subjects that heavily rely on the idea of fantasy. Inevitably, filmmakers have thus exploited sex – and all that is associated with the act – to varied results across the span of the century.

There are the “classic” films built around themes of sex, of course: Last Tango in Paris, Belle de Jour, In the Realm of the Senses, Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. Then there also those films that have been branded as outright “sexy” – films such as Wild Things, Cruel Intentions, Y Tu Mamá También, The Dreamers and Secretary – which exist purposely to ignite something in the loins. And it’s those sorts of films that this list is interested in.

Everyone is familiar with Basic Instinct and Eyes Wide Shut as far as sexy cinematic ventures go, but what about the...

Q&A with Aftershock Director Nicolás López
Aftershock was released to Blu-ray and DVD this week, and we were given the opportunity to submit questions to director Nicolás López. In our latest Q&A feature, Nicolás López talks about working with Eli Roth, practical effects, and his thoughts on The Green Inferno:

Now that Aftershock has seen a theatrical and VOD release in the Us, are you happy with how the movie has been received by horror fans?

Nicolás López: It’s very exciting to know that people from all around the world are watching the movie on VOD, DVD or…pirated, and being able to have a direct dialogue with the fans (and haters) on twitter and instagram (@nicolaslopez) is awesome. I love every reaction. Love or hate. I just want the people to watch the movie.

Instead of a typical disaster, Aftershock is infused with horror elements. Was this something you always planned...

New on DVD and Blu-ray: 'Oblivion' and More
This week: Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman make an "effective team" in director Joseph Kosinski's eye-popping sci-fi think piece "Oblivion," which also stars Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Also new this week is Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in the intense crime drama "The Place Beyond the Pines," the infuriating documentary "West of Memphis" and the earth-shatteringly stupid horror flick "Aftershock" starring Eli Roth.

'Oblivion'

Box Office: $89 million

Rotten Tomatoes: 54% Rotten

Storyline: "Tron: Legacy" helmer Joseph Kosinski directs this sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, the lone security repairman stationed on a ruined Earth. Jack believes that after a long battle with alien invaders, the surviving humans were forced to abandon the planet and he will join them shortly. But when Jack rescues a beautiful stranger (Olga Kurylenko) who crash-lands in her spacecraft, her arrival triggers a series of events that causes Jack...

Aftershock | Review
shockingly disastrous events that occur in the latter part of the film. Gringo (Eli Roth) has traveled from California to Chile to visit his friend, Ariel (Ariel Levy). Ariel's best friend Pollo (Nicolás Martínez) is one of the most connected people in the Chilean party scene, so Gringo finds himself bouncing from one hot party to the next. The three men have one mission: to hook up with the finest of Chilean ladies. On one fateful night, the three guys finally hit their stride with three beautiful women: Irina (Natasha Yarovenko), Kylie (Lorenza Izzo) and Monica (Andrea Osvárt). Everything is going fantastic, until the earthquake. This is when López's film rapidly transforms itself into the natural disaster film that you are probably expecting; but López actively avoids aping the genre, intent to comment upon its tropes and integrate as many horror elements as possible. López blurs the concept of the hero,...

‘Aftershock’ Review
Stars: Nicolás Martínez, Eli Roth, Ariel Levy, Lorenza Izzo, Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvárt | Written by Nicolás López, Guillermo Amoedo | Directed by Nicolás López

Horror fanboy turned writer/director Eli Roth (Hostel) returns to the screen both behind and in-front of the camera, as co-writer and star of Aftershock. Billed as a horror movie, the film borrows heavily from the 70s disaster movie genre, in particular the Irwin Allen school of filmmaking and his famous flicks The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure.

Whilst the film borrows from the likes of Irwin Allen and 70s disaster flicks, it also suffers from the same problems in that the set-up just takes too damn long. Aftershock spends a good third of the movie following around its leads – Gringo (Roth), Pollo (Martinez) and Ariel (Levy) – as they party it up in Chile, trying to meet girls and all the while getting more and more intoxicated…...

Aftershock is Still Rumbling Late into the Picture: A Movie Review
*there are some spoilers here. Director: Nicolás López. Writers: Guillermo Amoedo, Nicolás López and Eli Roth. Cast: Lorenza Izzo, Nicolás Martínez, Eli Roth, Natasha Yarovenko, Ariel Levy and Andrea Osvárt. Aftershock is the latest horror title from Hostel creator Eli Roth. Roth even headlines this piece and Roth is one of three writers for the film. The story borrows from the many disaster films of the '70s. In films like The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and The Towering Inferno (1974): characters are introduced, a chaotic event takes place and the conclusion ends peacefully. This formula is mostly followed in Aftershock. Yet, the conclusion here is a lot more tragic. As well, the principal characters are lost by the beginning of Act 3, which is a strange choice. Aftershock still manages to remain entertaining despite a slow start. The story begins with three friends: Pollo (Nicolás Martínez), Gringo (Eli Roth) and Ariel (Ariel Levy...

Review: Aftershock
Like most disaster flicks, Aftershock starts with an attractive group of people having the time of their lives before their world literally falls apart. This story follows Gringo (Eli Roth) and his Chilean friends Ariel (Ariel Levy) and Pollo (Nicolás Martínez).

They are hosting their friend down in Chile for a relaxing vacation that includes consuming copious amounts of alcohol and drugs at all-night ragers, wine-tasting during the day and an ongoing hunt for hot chicks who are ready to have some fun.

Lucky for the trio, they meet Monica (Andrea Osvart), Kylie (Lorenza Izzo), and Irina (Natasha Yarovenko) who are up for adventuring around Chile with the guys and much more later that night. That’s when everyone’s luck runs out as a devastating earthquake rocks the country and the group of partiers are immediately thrust into a string of life or death situations where their chance for...

Lorenza Izzo Talks Aftershock, Her Unique Casting Story, Working with Eli Roth and Nicolas Lopez, The Green Inferno, and More
Opening this weekend is Aftershock, a fictionalized disaster film loosely based on the 2010 Chilean earthquake, staring Eli Roth as Gringo, an American divorcée touring through Chile with his friends Ariel (Ariel Levy) and Pollo (Nicolas Martinez). After meeting a trio of beautiful women (Andrea Osvart, Lorenza Izzo, and Natasha Yarovenko) the group heads out for a night of drunken debauchery, but when a devastating earthquake hits they must do whatever it takes to survive a night of recurring aftershocks, escaped convicts, and panicking civilians. Directed by Nicolas Lopez, Aftershock takes a decidedly “genre” approach to the subject matter setting up death after bloody death and delivering on gruesome effects. Aftershock is available in select theaters and on VOD May 10th. At a recent press day for the film I sat down for a one on one interview with Lorenza Izzo. We talked about her unique casting story, working with Eli and Lopez,...

Exclusive: Eli Roth Talks Aftershock
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
Eli Roth Talks earthquakes, Hemlock Grove, and Aftershock, which is in theaters starting today!

Multi-talented director Eli Roth is showing off his acting skills once again in the thriller Aftershock, which is in theaters this Friday. Playing a character lovingly referred to as Gringo, Roth co-wrote and produced this tale of an earthquake that hits Chile while he and his new found friends are partying at a club. They must survive the aftermath in what turns out to be quite a gruesome ride.

We recently caught up with Eli, who was participating in a junket for the film at Los Angeles' exclusive home to magicians ,The Magic Castle. From a room adorned with owls, the director of Hostel and Cabin Fever revealed that Aftershock is based on real events that happened to director Nicol&#225s L&#243pez. He also spoke a tiny bit about his own next directoriual effort The Green Inferno,...

Wamg Talks To Eli Roth
What happens to a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub in Chile when a massive earthquake hits? Hint: Nothing good!

Well, except that it gave me the opportunity to sit down with Eli Roth to talk about his new movie Aftershock, in which he stars, co-wrote, and produced. I would say that’s a pretty darn good outcome! Check it out below.

In the middle of a night of wild partying, a hapless American tourist (Roth) and his friends are suddenly plunged into a living hell when a powerful earthquake rips through the coastal town of Valparaíso, Chile.

What do you think it is about travel that sets a good tone for a film?

Eli Roth: Well, travel – Everyone has fantasies of traveling. We all want to escape our lives and go somewhere fun. A lot of times we want to go as far away from...

'Aftershock' (2013) Movie Review
When compiling a list of the worst films of 2012 I will be sure to make special note of Nicolas Lopez's Aftershock, a film I truly wish I could erase from my memory. If this film was supposed to be funny I missed the punchline. If it was supposed to be scary I must not be easily scared. One thing I did catch, however, was a woman being raped multiple times only to later be shot in the back after being rescued. Yes, I did manage to catch that bit of depravity. Question though, was that supposed to make me laugh? Was I supposed to be scared? Am I supposed to find entertainment in such a scene? I'm so confused. The title is in reference to an earthquake that takes place while an American affectionately referred to as Gringo (Eli Roth) by his two Chilean friends -- Pollo (Nicolas Martinez...

Spend 9 Minutes Behind The Scenes of Aftershock
With Aftershock making noise in theatres this weekend, we have scored a nine-minute behind-the-scenes look at Nicolas Lopez's brutal disaster/horror hybrid. Check it out, and read our Aftershock reviews here.

Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez, and Guillermo Amoedo, revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.

It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Roth most recently produced The Last Exorcism, a microbudget film that grossed $70 million worldwide.

Roth and Lopez wrote the story together, inspired by the latter’s experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds, Roth plays the lead. Among...

Cabin Fever (2002)
Review: 'Aftershock,' Starring a Nebbish Eli Roth, Plays with Religious Cliches While the Blood Spurts
Cabin Fever (2002)
When he hasn’t been writing directing or producing some of the more notorious entries in the horror/torture porn catalogue (like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel,” and the two “Last Exorcisms”) Eli Roth has worked on his parallel career as screen star -- perhaps most notably as the Bear Jew, the baseball bat-wielding, Nazi-dispatching, one-man-Jewish-revenge-fantasy of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” So imagine our surprise to find Roth playing the shirt-tucked-into-mom-jeans-wearing Jewish stereotype of “Aftershock,” which opens Friday (May 10). Produced by Roth, Brian Oliver (“Arthur Newman”) and Miguel Asensio, and directed by Chile’s Nicolas Lopez, the shocker is set in Santiago, where three guys on the make run into what are essentially three supermodels (Lorenza Izzo, Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart), and then there’s an earthquake. But it’s a bit odd, this very deliberate effort to emphasize the male characters' Jewishness -- something Roth’s...

Review: ‘Aftershock’ Shakes Up the Earth Alongside Our Expectations
Sometimes, despite your best intentions, you’ll walk into a movie with negative preconceptions instead of an open mind. It happens to the best of us, and while I can honestly say it’s an extreme rarity for me personally I’m still more than a little ashamed on the occasions where it happens. The most recent example, and probably the first since the Robin Williams/John Travolta travesty Old Dogs, is a new disaster thriller co-written/produced by and starring Eli Roth. His films have never done much for me, his acting even in small roles seemed on par with Quentin Tarantino’s and to make matters worse I’d heard few positive things about the movie. In fact, the most common term used to describe it was “rapey.” So yeah, my expectations were fairly low. But then something wonderful happened. I was happily proven wrong. Roth plays an American nicknamed Gringo who’s visiting Chile...

After shock, after shock: Lopez Directs Roth in Another Tourist Nightmare

Recalling the glut of disaster movies that invaded the multiplexes in the 60s and 70s, everything from The Poseidon Adventure and, of course, Earthquake, Eli Roth teams as producer and star for Chilean director Nicolas Lopez’s Aftershock, a film that examines the horrors of unchecked human (rather than mother) nature. Wisely attempting to build characterization with an overly long set up, once the expected chaos sets in one must give credit to the remarkably tense and engaging pacing, even if it hits all the major checkpoints in the path of predictability.

On the last leg of his Chilean vacation, an American tourist known by his cohorts only as the Gringo (Eli Roth), cavorts in the vibrant local club scene for some last minute connections with some recently made friends, the shy Ariel (Ariel Levy), and Pollo (Nicolas Martinez...

'Aftershock' A Throwback To '70s And '80s Horror Fare
Aftershock (2012)
Los Angeles — Splat pack ringleader Eli Roth takes his gory roadshow south in "Aftershock," a lively but formulaic Chile-set chiller where a group of tourists finds themselves bloodied, bludgeoned and buried beneath a horrific earthquake. With Roth playing one of the leads and handing off directorial duties to Nicolas Lopez (Santos), the film tends to feel shoddier than the first two "Hostel" movies, even if the team draws laughs from the sight of spoiled hipsters getting their comeuppance in the Third World.

Given how the torture-porn genre has been waning, credited writers Roth, Lopez and Guillermo Amodeo bring down the ketchup count considerably here, and "Aftershock" is less of an all-out bloodbath than a throwback to hokey horror and disaster flicks from the `70s and `80s.

Taking many of its ingredients from the "Hostel" recipe, the film kicks off with a goofy American tourist known simply as Gringo (Roth) trying...

Eli Roth Talks Aftershock, Making a Film about Moral Choice, Shooting a Disaster Film on a Budget, New Modes of Film Distribution, Green Inferno, More
Co-writer/producer Eli Roth takes on his first starring role in Aftershock, a fictionalized disaster film loosely based on the 2010 Chilean earthquake. Roth stars as Gringo, an American divorcée touring through Chile with his friends Ariel (Ariel Levy) and Pollo (Nicolas Martinez). At a recent La press day I sat down with Roth for a one on one interview. We talked about morality in disaster films,...

Film Review: Eli Roth Stars in Convoluted, Manic ‘Aftershock’
Chicago – Eli Roth may be in front of the camera for the earthquake horror film “Aftershock,” opening in some markets this weekend, but his fingerprints are all over it as a creative voice as well. From the long “Hostel”-esque set-up about the dread that can come just from being a foreigner in a strange land to the shock value of some of the extreme places that the film goes, it’s a Roth joint. Sadly, writer/director Nicolas Lopez doesn’t have quite the same personality and tonal balance as his star/producer, resulting in a film that too often feels ridiculous instead of tense. The elements all seem to be there but they’re not compiled in a way that creates atmosphere or dread as much as they do confusion and laughter.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Gringo (Eli Roth) is travelling through Chile with friend Ariel (Ariel Levy) and his buddy...

Exclusive: Nicolas López on his Chilean Disaster Flick, Aftershock
Nicolas López's Aftershock isn't a horror movie as much as it's a disaster movie filled with the kinds of horrors that take place in a real natural disaster - in this case the horrifying 6.2 aftershock that hit Chile in the summer of 2010 that prompted Lopez and Hostel creator Eli Roth to collaborate on a movie that explores horror from a very real place.

It follows as group of individuals, two connected locals and four tourists traveling through the Santiago, Chile travel and party scene, going from cemeteries to big dance parties and seeing the beautiful city. One of the tourists, an American simply referred to as "Gringo" is played by Roth himself, a divorcee on the look to meet women and having three beautiful choices in Andrea Osvárt, Lorenza Izzo and Natasha Yarovenko. Leading the band is Nicolás Martínez's Pollo, a local player who means well but tends to...

New Aftershock One-Sheet Turns up the Tremor Terror
'Cabin Fever' and 'Hostel' helmer Eli Roth proves his triple threat status by penning, producing and performing in Chilean director Nicolas Lopez's upcoming horror thriller 'Aftershock'. Things Get Bloody in a New Red Band Trailer (and Some Images) for Aftershock
Although Eli Roth’s name is all over Nicolás López’s movie “Aftershock”, and the trailers open with him mouthing off about girls, I get the distinct impression that his character doesn’t actually last for very long in the movie. I mean, I don’t think he’s anywhere after the first minute of this new Red Band trailer. Or maybe I missed him in some of the scenes. Could be, could very well be. Anyways, you’ll be able to find out for yourself how long Roth’s character lasts when “Aftershock” opens on May 10th, 2013 (in limited release, in all likelihood), but until then, check out a new Red Band trailer for the flick. In Chile, a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare. “Aftershock” also stars Andrea Osvárt,...

Watch Bloody First Red Band Trailer For Eli Roth’s Aftershock
Genre meisters Dimension Films have amped up the gore, screams and blatant girly perving in the latest red band trailer for Nicolas Lopez’s Aftershock. Produced by and featuring in a deliciously hammy role, Eli Roth, the film shares more than a passing resemblance to his debut feature, Hostel. Co-written by Roth and Guillermo Amoedo, Aftershock takes the tried and tested “gaggle of youngsters in an unknown environment” horror premise and plonks it amidst a Chilean earthquake.

This first look at the bloodier side of the story revs up the brutal violence which an unfortunate group of Americans suffer during a massive earthquake. Beginning with three lads out to get laid while on vacation, Roth lets rip with some sweet comedic delivery until mother nature decides to unleash her wrath on Chile. Cue a plethora of beheadings, bloody stumps, a frigging tsunami and of course a boatload of half-naked girls covered in blood.
