2024 was a soft hum for the industry, but this year is already off to an operatic start. How could Hollywood resist pushing a bunch of sequels down our throats? If last year was an appetizer, with Inside Out 2 and the Deadpool/Wolverine tag team, 2025 is arriving with far more plump (just look at what the Minecraft film was able to do) and impossible missions.
Superheroes are obviously back, as they have continued to do so for the last decade. James Gunn’s Superman will be figuring out life again, and with Marvel’s Phase V coming to an end with Thunderbolts*, the new Fantastic Four reboot will hope to erase the sour taste of its previous attempts.
Maybe this time they’ll get it right? Our fingers remain crossed. James Cameron, meanwhile, isn’t done with blue aliens either, and Avatar 3 will likely demand another three hours of your...

Somehow, it's been 15 years since Tron Legacy burst onto the scene in a shower of neon lights and throbbing Daft Punk numbers, turning a decades-old pop culture oddity into a serious franchise tentpole seemingly overnight. But now, after a decade and a half off Grid, it's time to fire up the lightcycles once again for Joachim Rønning's Tron: Ares, a new chapter in the franchise that's set to reverse the series' polarity and, for the first time, bring the virtual world to reality — courtesy of Jared Leto's protagonist Ares, sent from the Grid to the real world on a dangerous mission. And you can check out the first trailer for the threequel, soundtracked by the inimitable Nine Inch Nails, below;
It may be only a minute and a half long, but that is some teaser right there! It's got neon red lightcycles bombing it down the freeway, bisecting...

Following the taste we had at CinemaCon, Disney has just dropped a jaw-dropping first look at their upcoming sequel, Tron Ares, which brings back Jeff Bridges to the franchise as well as introducing the Academy Award-winner Jared Leto to the world. Red neon, fast vehicles, physics-defying action and a banging soundtrack are our immediate thoughts upon watching what director Joachim Rønninghas in store for us, and we can't wait for October 10, 2025 to arrive so we can jump into the grid and find out for ourselves what Ares has up his sleeve.
Following what went down in Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares will be the first time that the Grid's programs have out of the digital world and into our own. Leto leads as Ares, a program whose mission looks to be somewhat malevolent and will undoubtedly shake the foundations of both worlds. The film will also star Greta Lee, and Evan Peters...

The wait is almost over, and Tron: Ares is set to transport audiences back to the digital frontier, and now we have our first official look at Jared Leto in the first trailer for the movie, courtesy of Collider's Britta DeVore who saw the footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Disney’s long-gestating sequel to Tron: Legacy has been in the works for over a decade, and now, with director Joachim Rønning (Young Woman and the Sea) at the helm, the franchise is finally making its return. The film will bring the Tron universe into uncharted territory as Leto’s Ares, a powerful program, is sent into the real world. Here's what we saw:
Two red motorcycles are racing down a highway before lasers shoot out from behind them and slice cop cars down the middle. A voiceover can be heard saying “I’m looking for something, something I do not understand.

Of all the directors who made the jump from music videos to feature-directing during MTV’s ’90s peak, Michel Gondry is the sole name whose work hasn’t been able to fully escape from the shadow of early pop promos. His hyper-stylized clips for artists ranging from Daft Punk to the White Stripes revealed a fondness for tactile meticulousness, shorts with an elaborate design where you could often feel the artist’s hand bringing them to life––in some cases quite literally seeing his hands shape the design. Aside from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind––a perfect narrative vehicle for his sensibility due to how its protagonist’s warped memories allowed the director to briskly jump from one visual conceit to the next––Gondry’s films have only ever recaptured this spirit in short bursts, if at all. You’d probably be forgiven for not knowing he directed the...

Back in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, every single hero introduced on the big screen would go on to make multiple appearances over short periods of time. Tony Stark, for example, flew into action in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3 in a little under three years. On the same page; Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Thor Odinson, and Scott Lang (to name just a few) would take audiences on many adventures one after another. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.
Nowadays, some MCU heroes are introduced never to be seen again in nearly three years, and there's no better example than Moon Knight himself. While Marc Spector was the star of his own Disney Plus show back in March 2022, audiences never saw him suit up again in any subsequent Marvel projects. Many wondered how long he'd be out of the picture, and while Marvel...

When thinking of conwoman Belle Gibson — who’s pretend cancer diagnosis was the basis of her business empire — there are plenty of anger-filled anthems that come to mind, and “Apple Cider Vinegar” scratches that itch.

A remote location. A group of unsuspecting, idiosyncratic hopefuls. A murderous plan that would eliminate them one by one. The formula is nearly a fool-proof one to pull off an entertaining horror-thriller, but writer-director Mark Anthony Green’s paper-thin feature debut “Opus” squanders the opportunity with shockingly low stakes and only the most basic observations on celebrity culture and fan entitlement.
A former GQ editor, Green at least understands how tough it is to fight for relevance in print media these days. Young, hungry writers struggle to launch careers with prominent bylines, while influencer-types grab all the unearned perks. Played perceptively by Ayo Edebiri, Ariel Ecton is one such up-and-coming journalist working for a Rolling Stone-adjacent publication, fighting for interesting assignments that automatically go to her seniors, even when she’s the one who comes up with the pitch. When putting together the song, “Piece by Piece,” for the documentary about his life of the same name, Pharrell Williams saw it as a chance explore everything in his life that has led him to where he is right now. “It’s thinking about how everything collectively is your story. If you think about all of the crazy times that you have experienced in your life and all the fun times and all the sad times and all of the momentous time and all the times you were caught off guard by things that just blindsided you,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He even traces it to the medium in which his story is told in the film. “They’re all piece by piece and it’s very interesting that it’s sort of synonymous with how the Lego world works.”

Pharrell Williams' animated Lego biopic tells his full life story, but with a fun and creative twist brought to the storytelling, the chance of a Piece by Piece post-credits scene to add to the fun is now known. The recognizable and popular musician is the latest to have an autobiographical movie made about him. Still, instead of taking a traditional approach to sharing his life story, Pharrell took an unconventional route by making the film a Lego animated movie. That also makes Piece by Piece a very different entry among the Lego movie franchise.
The previous animated Lego movies were tied to a single franchise that began with 2014's The Lego Movie, but Pharrell's Piece by Piece exists by itself. Pharrell Williams was always happy. He wasn’t always humble.
Since earning his first music credit on Wreckx-n-Effect’s 1992 ass-shaking anthem “Rump Shaker,” the producer/songwriter/rapper/singer/composer/fashion designer/movie producer/father has spent the past three decades on top of the world. You could easily write a thesis on how his inventive, colorful beats and creative lyricism — some as one-half of The Neptunes — have contributed to the pop culture landscape. He helped Britney Spears transition from teeny bopper to racy pop star; gave swag to Nsync and later Justin Timberlake, aiding in his successful solo sprint; had everyone getting undressed at the club with Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” and the boys — and girls and everyone else — running to the yard with Kelis’ still tasty “Milkshake.” Along the way, he gave Snoop Dogg his first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in “Drop It Like It’s Hot,...

Jeff Bridges reveals he is all set to return to the Tron series that he helped to establish all the way back in 1982, for Tron: Ares.
After many years of waiting, Tron: Ares, a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, is finally in production. Tron: Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski hasn’t returned and neither have any of the film’s stars – well, apart from one (you can probably guess who it is from the headline). It doesn’t even look like Daft Punk will be returning to give us another memorable score for the third film in the Tron franchise.
It’s not quite all-new though, with reports stating that Jeff Bridges is all set to make an appearance in the film. Bridges himself revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast, stating that he was excited to be working with Jared Leto, the star of Tron: Ares.

The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

Daft Punk is a duo that hardly needs an introduction. From Grammy-winning hit songs like "Get Lucky" to their work on soundtracks to blockbuster movies like "Tron: Legacy," the electronic musicians have conquered the world. But long before Hollywood came calling, the French beat-makers got a boost from the folks at Cartoon Network. Specifically, when the band's anime-inspired music videos aired on Toonami.
Complex did a deep-dive into the history of the anime-focused gamble that was Toonami back in 2017. While the programming block certainly helped give anime a profile boost in the U.S., it also helped out several popular musical acts, Daft Punk among them. As Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco explained at the time, the duo reached out to them when they were in the midst of premiering an ambitious music video project titled "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" tied to their second studio album,...

The 2010 science fiction action film directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy, was a box office hit. Starring Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, and Olivia Wilde, the film is a direct sequel to Tron (1982), and is directed by Steven Lisberger. Made 28 years after the first movie, Tron: Legacy made up in visuals and sound what it lacked in story. The movie was also nominated for an Oscar that year in the Best Sound Editing category, but lost to Richard King for Inception.

Tron 3 has begun filming, but it's unknown who will compose the movie's music after Daft Punk's split in 2021. Fans of Tron: Legacy loved Daft Punk's score and doubt Tron 3 can live up to it without their involvement. Potential replacements for Daft Punk in composing the Tron 3 soundtrack include Joseph Trapanese, Junkie Xl, and Kavinsky.
The filming of Tron: Ares is officially underway, yet it's still a mystery who will be behind the musical composition for the film, which was a critical part of Tron: Legacy's popularity. Tron 3 began filming recently after spending years facing development setbacks and delays. Not many details have been released yet about the plot of the third film in the Tron franchise. Beginning with Tron (1982) and followed by Tron: Legacy (2010), the films center around a virtual reality known as "the Grid" and detail the battle between humans and antagonists within the program for power.

If we’d have to guess which two questions Daft Punk have probably been asked the most, we’d go with: “Why did you break up?” followed by “Why the robot helmets?” The French house duo, who called it called it quits in February 2021, are famously rarely interviewed, but Thomas Bangalter offered a little insight to the inner workings of Daft Punk — and being “relieved” that the era is over — on a recent episode of BBC’s The First Time with Matt Everett podcast.
Bangalter previously gave a kind of vague explanation for why Daft Punk broke up, saying that “the last thing I would want to be, in the world we live in, in 2023, is a robot.” Speaking with host Everett, he dug deeper into his and bandmate Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo’s relationship with their art.

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.
I’ve always heard that the script Kaufman originally turned in was twice as complicated, and...

Leiji Matsumoto, the popular Japanese manga and anime artist known for his work with Daft Punk, has died at the age of 85.
Among his many works, Matsumoto created the popular manga series Space Pirate Captain Harlock. In an interview, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo cited the manga as one of their biggest early influences. “At around the age of 5 years old, we would watch Captain Harlock,” they explained. “The music we have been making must have been influenced at some point by the shows we were watching when we were little kids.”

Having gone to artists running the gamut from The Beatles to Billie Eilish, the Grammy for Album of the Year is one that every artist wishes to win. It’s one thing to be recognized for a particular song, but being honored for the best body of work of the year can often mean much more, especially to artists who truly focus on the art of creating a complete cohesive album. This year the biggest story is the rematch between Adele and Beyoncé, but there may be some possible upsets brewing.
Adele’s “30” is definitely one of the front-runners here. Her Grammy track record is perhaps the most impressive of any artist ever; she has only lost three awards out of 18 previous nominations, and she went undefeated for both “21” and “25.” This year could be a little different, though, considering that “30” wasn’t necessarily the cultural phenomenon that those previous two albums were.

The franchise’s last outing in 2010 was a dud, and the actor has Oscar pedigree when not preoccupied with his band. It’s all rather mysterious
Some Hollywood news reports just don’t add up. “Tom Cruise to star in Top Gun 3” – well yes, obviously. “James Cameron to keep making weirder and weirder Avatar sequels until he’s in his 90s” – yep, inevitably. “Tron 3 moving forward with Jared Leto” – ahem, really? The article in the Hollywood Reporter this week poses far more questions than it answers.
Why is Disney going ahead with Tron 3 when 2010’s feeble Tron: Legacy was hardly a box office or critical smash, despite rehiring Jeff Bridges, spending millions on CGI and getting Daft Punk to do the soundtrack? Is it really a good idea to expand the world of the geeky cult classic 1982 original into a macro-universe of shiny digital pixels? Well, that one...

It's been over a decade since the last Tron movie, and the Tron 3 that's coming isn't shaping up to be a satisfying continuation of the franchise. Even though it was full of stunning visuals, and a strong cast that included Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner from the original Tron, its sequel Tron: Legacy wasn't a huge financial success for Disney in 2010, causing the House of Mouse to struggle with adapting a final film for the Tron trilogy over the past decade. Now that Tron 3, under the working title Tron: Ares might actually be happening, expectations and scrutiny surrounding the film's creative choices are higher than ever before.

The awkwardly titled gay rugby romance “In from the Side” is so padded out at 134 minutes with both rugby games and sex scenes that the final effect is numbing, and writer-director Matt Carter doesn’t bother much with either plot or character to fill out his narrative.
Mark (Alexander Lincoln) is a member of the South London Stags, which is thought of as the B-team of a gay London Rugby Club. Before you can hum “Some Enchanted Evening,” he locks eyes from across a crowded room with Warren (Alexander King), a cocky guy who plays on what is considered the A-team.
While out at a nightclub with fellow team members, Mark makes eye contact with Warren again, and Warren buys them some tequila shots. Confident in his approach, Warren licks Mark’s hand in a suggestive manner, and they banter on the dance floor and share a kiss before Mark...

“Dancing with the Stars” may have a new home on Disney+, but one thing hasn’t change: disproportionately distributed dance syles.
Disney+ has unveiled the 16 routines and songs for Monday’s Season 31 premiere, with the dance styles being jive, tango, quickstep, cha-cha, foxtrot, salsa and Viennese waltz. Seven couples will perform a cha-cha, while two each will do a jive, tango and salsa. The Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep will each be represented by one couple. Totally even here.
See the full list below.
Joseph Baena and Daniella Karagach: jive (“Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas)
Selma Blair and Sasha Farber: Viennese waltz (“The Time of My Life” by David Cook)

Update, writethru: With an estimated 58.2 of the vote, Emmanuel Macron has been reelected as President of France, defeating extreme right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who amassed 41.8. Macron now becomes the eighth French incumbent to win a second term.
Coming into today’s final round of the election, independent centrist Macron was leading in the polls, but throughout her campaign, Le Pen had gained momentum compared to the first time the two faced off in 2017. Today marked the second runoff between candidates from parties other than the traditional left and right.
Voter abstention today was estimated at 28.7, according to media reports. This is higher than in 2017, and is also more than the first round of voting two weeks ago. However, it is not a record breaker.
