Star and co-director Crystal J Huang plays a ballroom-dancing geisha assassin in this preposterous LA melodrama
If the erotic thriller’s task is to seduce its audience, this preposterous film instead subjects you to a sexy ordeal that your mind will attempt to blot out later. It’s almost a match for Tommy Wiseau’s infamous The Room in the car-crash Californian melodrama stakes. But a kind of visual floridness, resulting from its penchant for the unspeakably kitsch, nudges it vaguely in the direction of competence and away, sadly, from unmitigated disaster.
Kate (played by co-director Crystal J Huang) is a modern-day geisha in Los Angeles assigned assassination jobs by a Japanese secret society. Prolonged meditation would be needed to divine what the poor souls have done to deserve it. Or how anyone could be driven to kill themselves, as is apparently the case with the first victim we see,...

Those who were driving through the intersection of Highland and Fountain in Los Angeles in the early 2000s got to know Tommy Wiseau very, very well. It was at that intersection that Wiseau chose to buy a billboard for his then-new film "The Room," and it featured a rather unflattering closeup of the man, staring directly into the camera, one of his eyes half-closed. The billboard stayed up for five straight years, costing Wiseau $5,000 a month.
It worked, though. Enough Angelenos drove past the billboard to become curious about "The Room" and seek out a screening at the Sunset 5 theater nearby. Those who saw it in those early days were utterly baffled. "The Room" is an intense infidelity drama about an all-around good guy named Johnny (Wiseau) whose fiancée Lisa (Juliette Danielle) instigates an affair with Johnny's best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). The film, however, is so weirdly scripted and...

2014’s Boyhood took 12 years to make. Some of these films make Boyhood look like an episode of South Park.
14 ‘Kill It and Leave This Town’: 14 Years
Polish animator Mariusz Wilczyński set out to make a short animated film about a person whose entire family dies, so they run off to a land of memories where time doesn’t exist and everyone is alive. At some point, Wilczyński decided it should actually become a feature length psychological horror, which took just a smidge longer to animate.
13 ‘The Evil Within’: 15 Years
Writer/director Andrew Getty self-financed this horror film, which was based on his childhood nightmares, for about $6 million. He filmed his deepest fears inside his own mansion, toiled away for years on special effects, and died before he could finish. The producer had to do the final editing to get it across the finish line.

Oh, hi, Bruce! It’s pretty rare when a bad movie influences a filmmaker in a positive way. Maybe someone like Tim Burton is intrigued by the do-it-yourself style of Ed Wood and makes a brilliant biopic but most bad movies are examples of what not to do. Then again, not all are…Take cult flick The Room, for example. Sure, there’s James Franco’s The Disaster Artist to recount the making of Tommy Wiseau’s pet project, but The Room actually partly inspired an installment in one of the biggest franchises ever. That’s right, without The Room, the visual style of The Batman may not have been what it was.
As Miguel Santana da Silva – digital artist for Industrial Light & Magic who worked on The Batman – recently revealed, the matte paintings in some of The Room’s most infamous scenes were a direct inspiration for how Gotham would look in certain scenes.

“Deadpool and Wolverine” is now playing in theaters, and although Hugh Jackman probably won’t receive any major awards nominations for his anticipated return as his comic book character, he has been nominated for an Oscar as well as other major trophies throughout his career. Let’s look back at his many awards races.
After his breakthrough performance as Wolverine in the first “X-Men” film, Jackman spent most of the 2000s appearing in summer action blockbusters like “Swordfish” and “Van Helsing” as well as “X-Men” sequels and a prequel. He was never a serious awards contender for the 2001 romantic comedy “Kate & Leopold,” but he did receive his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The other nominees were Ewan McGregor for “Moulin Rouge!,” John Cameron Mitchell for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Billy Bob Thornton for “Bandits” and Gene Hackman for “The Royal Tenenbaums,...

It’s a “Hot Glen Summer” at the movies.
Just like the immortal words of Megan Thee Stallion, who’s billed every summer since 2019 the perfect time to do “hot girl shit,” Glen Powell is heating up movie screens. Summer 2024 firmly establishes him as a power player with Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the Prime Video documentary “The Blue Angels” and Universal “Twisters” dropping in rapid succession.
In the words of Retta — who first met Powell on the 2014 indie rom-com “Sex Ed” before they reunited for “Hit Man” — “Homie is a straight up movie star.”
“This is the summer of Glen,” director Richard Linklater concurs. “They’re all ‘Johnny come lately’ to the Glen Powell thing. Anybody who’s known Glen for the last 10-plus years knows that he’s a star. He’s smart. He’s funny. He’s hard working.”

Nobody does April Fools’ Day better than Adult Swim. For the past 20 years, the network has made it an annual mission to keep the prankish spirit of the jester-based day alive by throwing its viewers a curveball. Be it absurd gags, silly gimmicks, and sometimes grade-a shocking game-changers, April Fools’ Day is a colossal event for Adult Swim that every adult animation fan can’t miss.
Here are a few of the channel’s best April Fools’ Day moments from the past two decades.
2004 – Mustaches
Let’s go back to the prank that started it all—mustaches! It was just a night of regular adult animated programming, but with mustaches drawn onto all the characters in every scene in every show. It is such a simplistic gag, yet it birthed the tradition.

In an entirely objective and deeply serious critique, filmmaker Joel Coen has reviewed his brother’s new movie Drive-Away Dolls without being mean and petty even once.
If you want a masterclass in writing a professional film review, look no further than filmmaker Joel Coen’s measured, thoughtful critique of Drive-Away Dolls, the new thriller which just happens to be directed by Joel’s brother, Ethan.
“Mr Coen’s apparent goal – aside from making Tommy Wiseau look like Ingmar Bergman – was to replicate a 90s B comedy,” Joel Coen writes on Substack. “That he failed to clear even that subterranean bar is the only interesting thing about the film. It is truly stunning to watch a man set out to make the spiritual descendant of Mannequin 2 and then fail…”
The review then descends into a maelstrom of name-calling, childhood bitterness and score-settling that we won’t repeat here. In fact,...

Zehan (Urdu for Mind) is a psychological thriller directed by Dhiren Dimri that stars Aarya Babbar and Surbhi Mahendru. Saying anything about this movie is proving to be quite difficult for me because I can’t type while rolling on the floor laughing about it. It’s one of those movies that is so bad that it is hilarious. It gives a strong competition to the 2003 masterpiece (of the so-bad-it’s-hilarious genre) The Room, but to be fair, Zehan, is a little bit better than the Tommy Wiseau film and hence will lose that competition. The film does have a couple of old-school bangers that I liked.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Film?
Zehan begins by showing us a couple deeply, madly, and passionately in love, but they have had a fight. Hence, they go on a trip. The couple also carries their kid around on this trip,...

One year ago, Canadian sweetheart Ryan Reynolds showed everyone how easy it is to protect themselves from hackers with the 1Password security setup. Well, for accuracy’s sake, Reynolds’s assistant protected the actor’s varying accounts. The Deadpool and Green Lantern actor just sat around, waiting for some “bad actor” to steal his private information. What matters is that his accounts are secure, and he can email love letters to Hugh Jackman at his leisure.

Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi’s Nyad is aggressively bad. The kind of bad where you have to wonder how it passed through the eyes of two otherwise-competent filmmakers (known for their documentary work), not to mention an entire production team and studio. With a Netflix logo, the bar is already lowered beneath what would be suitable for a theatrical release, but this biopic suggests something whipped together with minimal thought––from the words on the page given to the actors to basic blocking to how we move from scene to scene. Whatever skills they used to create the dizzying spectacle of Meru and Free Solo, Chin and Vaserhelyi feel like they got completely lost in the translation to narrative cinema.
The staging of both Annette Benning and Jodie Foster, two of Hollywood’s most lauded and storied actresses giving absolute career-worst performances, is akin to a Disney Channel afterschool special.

Cliff Twemlow is an obscure figure even by British B-movie standards, a handsome, no-nonsense former Manchester nightclub doorman who attempted to create a Hollywood of the north in the early ’80s and ’90s. Born in 1937, a fact he tried to cloud for many years, he was something of a renaissance man: He acted in soaps, he composed lucrative library music, he wrote a novel about a killer pike, and, after a wounding experience with a botched adaptation of his autobiographical novel Tuxedo Warrior, he decided to become a filmmaker himself.
His first production, G.B.H. (1982), was shot on video — the grainy, ugly, analog kind — and it rode on the coattails of the recent hit The Long Good Friday. Twemlow starred as a handsome, no-nonsense Manchester nightclub doorman, hired to protect a local nightclub from a protection racket after returning from a stretch in prison.

Judy Greer’s iconic career has spanned from “13 Going on 30” to the revamped “Halloween” franchise, proving the actress can delicately balance comedy, horror, and even a certain flavor of signature detachment onscreen. Yet, somehow, the time travel logic of 2004’s comedy “13 Going on 30” makes more sense than the kind at hand in “Aporia,” the latest Greer vehicle that attempts to marry scraps from Greer’s recent haunting performance as a grieving mother in recent festival premiere “Eric Larue” and repurposes her masterful tears into a bland sci-fi drama that asks too many unanswered questions about morality, mortality, and the price of happiness.
Greer stars in the film as Sophie, a widowed single mother who lost her scientist husband Malcolm (Edi Gathegi) in a drunk driving accident. She is left to care for their 11-year-old daughter Riley (“This Is Us” alum Faithe Herman), with the pre-teen acting...

Plot: Swiss mountain girl Heidi is abducted by brutal government troops and must defend herself and fight a war against a cheese-fueled machinery of hate.
Review: I wasn’t familiar with the Heidi character before Mad Heidi but I know she’s quite ingrained in the childhood of many Europeans. So I can only imagine the reaction of someone who grew up with this character, only to see her kick so much ass. Because this is a revenge story more akin to Kill Bill than something you’d be reading to your children at night. From a crazy dictator who thinks the biggest crime in the world is being lactose intolerant to an officer with a very specific kink, this is exploitation in every way. And that’s why I had such a blast with it.

Tommy Wiseau has a lot to answer for. While he did not create the “bad movie” with 2003’s The Room, his misguided attempt to deliver “the passion of Tennessee Williams” resulted in a cult film which has regular theatre showings across the world. Many films followed to try and create a similar success story, but such a thing cannot be manufactured, and that is sadly evident in this work by co-directors Austin Frosch and Paul Dale.

Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).

In what is possibly one of the most elaborate anti-jokes in recent memory, a remake of Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" starring Bob Odenkirk will take the entire thing dead seriously. The volunteer organization Acting for a Cause has produced and staged the charity project for amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, with company creator Brando Crawford acting as director. Those who worked on the project have promised to not treat Wiseau's shining beacon of unintentional hilarity for laughs, including longtime comedian Bob Odenkirk, who tweeted out how excited he was about participating in this momentous occasion.
Created during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, Acting for a Cause usually stages script readings of plays and films over laptop video conference meetings. However, "The Room" will be more elaborate than the average table read, incorporating green screens to replicate scenes in the original film. Marvel better not call Bob Odenkirk.
The “Better Call Saul” star revealed that he is not interested in joining the MCU and prefers more “relatable” stories onscreen.
“I always like to keep things grounded, relatable, and smaller. I don’t think I’m built for that world,” Odenkirk told The Independent. “I’m built for characters that make you feel like that guy could live next door.”
Odenkirk’s upcoming sequel to action film “Nobody” is the furthest level of heightened anti-heroism he is interested in. “I care about this more than you could imagine,” Odenkirk said. “You’d think it’s the personal story of my life, and not an action-genre movie.”
The “Lucky Hank” actor previously shared that “Nobody” was a natural extension of “Better Call Saul.”

The “Lucky Hank” actor previously shared that “Nobody” was a natural extension of “Better Call Saul.”
“I was very surprised by ‘Nobody.’ I had initiated that project because I had a feeling that the character I was...

The movies have always been at odds with new mediums, especially television. With the invention of the television and its ability to bring entertainment to the masses at home, movies began to revolutionize their format in order to re-attract audiences back to theaters. Films became bigger and wider with 70mm formats. The first trend of 3D movies attempted to capture the audience’s wonder. However, streaming is a whole different monster where it has been seen by many as the definitive movie theater killer. The Academy took a while to come around to considering streaming films to be nominated for awards. Last year saw Netflix films like All Quiet on the Western Front beat out theatrical releases in a couple of categories.
Puck is now reporting on the Academy’s newest strategy to help raise interest in theater-going. Rather than outright snubbing films that stream, there is a new proposal...

After twenty years of silence, Tommy Wiseau is back with an all-new feature film, his first since the immortal 2003 cult classic “The Room.” Is this cause for celebration or riots? It all depends on what one thinks of Wiseau: a lovable hack, a shameless charlatan, or some seemingly impossible hybrid of both things at once.

In any case, Wiseau’s next film is “Big Shark,” about three best friend firefighters who must save the city of New Orleans from, that’s right, a really big shark.

After 20 long years, The Room auteur Tommy Wiseau is back with a new narrative feature film Big Shark — and you better believe it’s got an extremely big shark in it.
For those anxious to see if the man behind one of the strangest cult classics in film history still has what it takes to delight and confuse audiences in equal measure, the new Big Shark trailer should offer plenty of hope. The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. Tommy Wiseau has directed his first feature film since The Room, and the trailer for the project — dubbed Big Shark — is out now.
Per Variety, Big Shark follows New Orleans firefighters Georgie, Patrick, and Tim as they attempt to save their city from the titular fishy menace. In addition to writing and directing the film, Wiseau stars alongside Isaiah Laborde and Mark Valeriano. Wonderfully, the trailer for the picture looks like it was made in iMovie, with ridiculous red text assaulting the screen over dramatic action music before its stars are seen running through the streets of Nola, where the shark inexplicably manages to chase them.
Wiseau has big plans for Big Shark. The film will debut at a Portland screening on April 2nd before hitting other markets hosted by Prytania Theatres, with the filmmaker slated to appear at each event.

Shark movies are a dime a dozen, especially with schlock like Jersey Shore: Shark Attack, Sand Sharks, Ghost Shark, and so much more. But what happens when Tommy Wiseau, the visionary director of The Room, takes aim at the ocean’s most fearsome predator? Tommy Wiseau has released a new trailer for Big Shark, which is somehow the first movie he’s directed since the release of The Room twenty years ago.
The Big Shark trailer cuts back and forth between shots of New Orleans with two boxers fighting in a gym, all while the text reads, “You can Run. You can Hide. But that won’t save you. The world’s most vicious hunter has come to the bayou and only wants one thing… blood.” The film stars Tommy Wiseau as Patrick, Isaiah Laborde as Tim, and Greg Sestero as Georgie, three firefighters who must save New Orleans from a killer shark.

"You can run... You can hide... But that won't save you." Tommy Wiseau, famed director of The Room, is back!! I guess...? Maybe? A new trailer has debuted for his next feature film titled Big Shark. The second trailer for a shark movie out this week after The Black Demon, too. It's also Wiseau's only feature since The Room in 2003. The trailer launched on Variety along with a poster and info about a roadshow tour Wiseau is going on, playing the film in different cinemas around the country throughout 2023. So it will indeed be the return of Mr. Wiseau. The only simple synopsis available is: Three firefighters must save New Orleans from a shark attack. Because of course they do. It's no surprise to say that this looks like a parody film. Also a warning - the trailer ends halfway and suddenly turns into an ad for Wiesau's underwear brand - yes,...

There are few appreciators of ill-advised cinema that haven't seen "The Room," director Tommy Wiseau's so-bad-it's-legendary 2003 film that has become a true cult classic almost despite itself. It even inspired a much-acclaimed biopic in the form of A24's "The Disaster Artist," a film we called "a hilarious and sincere tribute to one of the worst films ever made." Now, a full two decades later, Wiseau is back in the director's chair for another presumably schlocky adventure. And this time, he's taking on the creature feature with a big, cheesy CGI shark flick appropriately titled "Big Shark." In even better news, we've got a trailer!
A teaser for the film first appeared online back in 2019, but now a new trailer has surfaced as the film readies for a select theatrical rollout beginning next month. According to Variety, these "Pre Premier" screenings will feature Wiseau in person and will be...

Tommy Wiseau can’t jump the shark: He is the shark.
The “Room” writer-director-star (auteur?) is officially back with his first feature film in 20 years. “Big Shark,” following the craze of the B-movie “Sharknado” franchise and spinoffs, follows three firefighters as they work to save New Orleans from one massive shark.
The tagline reads: “Can New Orleans survive?”
The trailer has been playing for audiences at theatrical screenings of “The Room” for the last few months, but the official trailer is now online. “Big Shark” will begin a nationwide rollout April 2 with a debut screening at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon, followed by New Orleans (April 28 and 29), San Francisco (May 5 and 6), Los Angeles (June 2 and 3), and at the Village East by Angelika in New York City.
Wiseau is set to appear in person for branded “Pre Premier” screenings, with the “Official Final Cut Version” of “Big Shark” being released only after an eight-month theatrical rollout window.

Oh hi, shark. Originally announced back in 2019, cult filmmaker Tommy Wiseau‘s second feature is a shark attack horror film titled Big Shark, and the trailer has now arrived.
Wiseau himself stars alongside Mark Valeriano and Isaiah Laborde in the film, which centers on a shark terrorizing New Orleans. The only thing standing in its way? Three firefighters.
The official plot synopsis previews, “Three firefighters – George, Patrick & Tim – must save New Orleans from a gigantic shark. Can New Orleans survive?”
Variety informs us, “Big Shark will kick off its rollout on April 2 with a debut screening at Cinema 21 in Portland, Ore. Screenings will follow over the coming months, with a tentative schedule of engagements hosted by Prytania Theatres at Canal Place in New Orleans (April 28 & 29), the Balboa Theatre in San Francisco, Calif. (May 5 & 6), the Landmark Westwood in Los Angeles (June 2 & 3) and the Village East by Angelika in New York City.

Tommy Wiseau is back behind the camera again. The director and star of “The Room” has debuted the trailer for “Big Shark,” his first follow-up feature to his trademark 2003 cult melodrama.
“Big Shark” follows three firefighters, Georgie, Patrick and Tim, as they work to save New Orleans from an attack by — you guessed it — a very big shark.
While this first look at “Big Shark” is only now being debuted online, the trailer has already been playing for audiences at theatrical screenings of “The Room” over recent months.

Bob Odenkirk is not making fun of Tommy Wiseau. Yes, he’s doing a reading of the enigmatic filmmaker’s 2003 bad-movie staple The Room, in which he plays main character Johnny, through which Wiseau vented all of his frustrations with the world. But he has no intention of mocking the movie or its writer/director/star/hype-man Wiseau. “We didn’t make fun of it,” he promised Den of Geek while promoting his new series Lucky Hank at SXSW. “Because that’s already been done.”
More than a reluctance to cover well-trod ground, Odenkirk’s refusal to mock The Room comes from a place of love and respect. “I love that movie. I love everything about it. I love the phenomenon of it,” he enthused. So when asked to do a reading of the movie to support AIDS research foundation amfAR, Odenkirk didn’t have to think twice. “I said...

The Irish accent is consistently voted one of the most attractive in the world, yet even some of the world’s finest actors have trouble with it. Leonardo DiCaprio tried, as did Julia Roberts (twice), and dare we even mention Brad Pitt?
Today (17 March) marks St Patrick’s Day, and if you have no pub and/or beer plans, why not experience the next best thing: reminiscing about the wonkiest Irish accents in film history.
Relatively new to this great lineage of bad accents is Wild Mountain Thyme, a romantic drama released in the UK in early 2021 and so inexplicable that even literal Irish actors seemed to speak with fake Irish accents in it.
Such is the evil power of this particular bit of fakery, though – Hollywood’s bastardised visions of Ireland so all-encompassing and destructive that few can survive it.

Michael B. Jordan‘s first foray into directing with “Creed III” has done quite well at the box office, and been generally enjoyed by critics and fans alike. Maybe it’s too early to consider its awards potential, but maybe not, because there seems to be more room for movies like “Creed III” now than when Jordan first played the title role in Ryan Coogler‘s “Creed” back in 2015.
What’s particularly interesting about that initial release is that it did get Sylvester Stallone nominated for his third Oscar, nearly 40 years after his first two Oscar noms for writing and starring in the original “Rocky” (1976). That iconic boxing drama led to a full-on franchise that was more about box office than awards, but “Creed” came at a time when people started taking Coogler more and more seriously following his acclaimed debut feature “Fruitvale Station.”

Bob Odenkirk’s dream is for cult hit “The Room” to be considered, in the immortal words of Harry Styles, a real film movie.
The “Better Call Saul” alum is set to take on the role of Johnny, as originated by writer-director Tommy Wiseau, for a remake of the 2003 film. The remake will benefit amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, with Mike Flanagan, Kate Siegel, Justin Decloux, Brando Crawford, Cameron Kasky, Arturo Castro, and Bella Heathcote rounding out the cast.
“The Room” follows San Francisco resident Johnny as he grapples with his fiancée cheating on him with his best friend. A first look at the philanthropic remake showed original cast member Greg Sestero on set.
Yet the outrageous script cemented the would-be Shakespearean tragedy “The Room” into cult B-movie status — something that Odenkirk singlehandedly wants to undo.

Bob Odenkirk is entering “The Room,” and hopefully it doesn’t tear him apart, Lisa. Deadline reports that the “Better Call Saul” actor will star in a for-charity remake of Tommy Wiseau’s notorious cult classic, which is famous for being one of — if not the — worst movie ever made.

Oh, hi Bob.
Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk will star in a video re-creation of The Room, one of cinema’s strangest films – some say the worst, others know the naysayers just don’t get it.

"The Room" has certainly earned its place in cinematic history, albeit as one of the most notoriously bad films ever made that managed to gain mainstream notoriety. Made by the elusive and strange Tommy Wiseau, the film celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. And it sounds like we will be getting a pretty bizarre treat to help commemorate that anniversary in the form of a remake starring none other than Bob Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul" and "Mr. Show" fame. Yes, you heard that right.
Buzz around this remake of "The Room" kicked up on social media, with podcaster Justin Decloux taking to Twitter to say, "I am very excited for the feature-length 'The Room' remake (Shot mostly on greenscreen) in which the Tommy Wiseau role is taken over by Bob Odenkirk -- and it's not played as a joke." As much as we love Mystery Science Theater 3000, Red Letter Media, and The Flop House, it’s time that we face the truth: there’s really no such thing as a bad movie. Sure, there are movies we may personally dislike for one reason or another, but when we use phrases like “so bad it’s good” or “guilty pleasure,” we’re twisting ourselves into knots trying to say something quite simple: this movie makes me happy, regardless of its quality or what other people think.
The film-centric social media site Letterboxd has made that fact plain with a newly-released list of movies with low ratings and over 1000 likes. In other words, these are movies that users give one or two stars (out of five), and yet still like by pressing the “heart” icon.
The list of fifty includes many titles familiar to fans of the aforementioned shows and podcasts.
