Barcelona-based filmmaker Abigail Schaaff is at the helm of the upcoming The Monster of Many Noses, and Variety brings us a first look at the unique genre title today.
Filmax has come on board the movie, Variety reports this afternoon, which is said to blend together the “fantasy genre and local lore to large social point.”
“Connecting 1960s Spain to its 1930s, the decade of Spain’s Civil War whose atrocities were silenced as the price of transition to democracy in 1970s Spain, The Monster of Many Noses (“L’home dels lassos”) is set in 1968 in a small village in the mountains.
“Three children try to escape the so-called Man of Many Noses, a figure in Catalan lore who hunts down children who have told too many lies on the last day of the year. But the children aren’t the only ones who fear him. Lies from the past can also be smelled.

One of the Spanish-speaking world’s biggest sales forces, Film Factory Entertainment has swooped on sales rights to thriller “Two” (“Duo”), directed by Mar Targarona and the latest production from top Spanish genre auteur producer Rodar y Rodar.
Producer of two milestone titles of Spain’s genre auteur scene – J.A Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillem Morales’ “Julia’s Eyes,” Targarona has built her own directorial career on suspense thrillers that prove unexpected and unpredictable in tone and resolution, such as 2016’s “Boy Missing” and “The Photographer of Mauthausen” – part true-events inspired record, part edge-of-set entertainment – in particular drawing strong notices. “Two” looks no exception. Its singular premise sees two strangers, a man and a woman in their 30s, wake up in an unknown place, naked and glued to each other by their stomachs. They struggle to understand how and why they got there – becoming increasingly terrified as they discover clues and the truth emerges.

That’s probably the case in the U.S. today, where poetry attracts only small numbers of people, but in the 1940s, before TV and the Internet, verses enjoyed greater popularity. Hopefully it will get some kind of Us release since Larrain has another interesting film coming out next year titled Jackie, starring Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard. One of the most overlooked features thus far in 2016, The Club, finally arrived earlier this year in the United States, and Pablo Larraín is already back with his next film. Premiering at Cannes in the Directors’ Fortnight section, Neruda is a biopic of the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet, here played by Luis Gnecco. His No star Gael García Bernal (who just got the lead in Jonás Cuarón‘s Zorro reboot Z) plays Inspector Oscar Peluchoneau, who led the police manhunt for the title character.
Ahead of a premiere shortly, the first international trailer has now landed, which unfortunately doesn’t have subtitles yet. Nonetheless, one can get a sense of a perhaps unexpected playful vibe when compared to the logline, along with Larraín’s striking, crisp visuals. Check it out below with a hat tip to Keyframe for the highly-anticipated film also starring Alfredo Castro, Mercedes Moran, Michael Silva, and Pablo Derqui,...

In a mundane hospital hallway, fine arts photographer Nicolas, epileptic since childhood, falls for the aloof Isabel, unaware she is visiting her suicidal mother. The narrative begins through Nicolas's lens then cuts back to follow Isabel prior to their meeting. Their stories merge as they're suddenly engaged in a highly charged relationship. When the intense getting acquainted period wanes, it seems worth attempting to transcend respective flaws and demons, yet commitment is not something that comes easy to either of these resolutely independent people. Nico and Isabel find the future increasingly less foreseeable and the vivid present ever more deeply affecting.

Mexico
Director: Katina Medina Mora
Production: Gerardo Gatica, Alberto Müffelmann, Rodrigo Trujillo, Jacobo Nazar, Moises Cosio
Section: Works in Progress Competition
Synopsis
“Museum" (Museo)
Mexico
Director: Alonso Ruiz Palacios
Production: Gerardo Gatica, Manuel Alcalá, Alberto Müffelman n
Section: Co-Production Forum Competition (Mexico-u.S.A.-Canada)
Synopsis
On December 25, 1985, adding to the chaos of September's earthquake, Mexico awakened with news of the theft of 140+ pieces from the capitol city's National Museum of Anthropology. The heist was perfectly executed, bypassing the guards who were busy celebrating Christmas Eve. No one imagined that the perpetrators of the robbery slept peacefully, nightly, in the suburb of Ciudad Satélite - veterinary students and lifelong friends, Carlos Perches and Ramon Sardina. The magnitude of the theft wildly exceeded the expectations of the thieves. Carlos and Ramon depart their comfortable life for an underworld adventure that drags them into the abyss.

This is the Pure Movies review of Julia's Eyes, directed by Guillem Morales and starring Belén Rueda, Lluís Homar, Pablo Derqui, Francesc Orella, Joan Dalmau and Boris Ruiz. When Salvador Dali and director Luis Buñuel teamed up to create short film Un Chien Andalo they included the now-infamous eyeball-slitting scene, a wince-inducing moment. Since that surrealist moment in 1929, the threat eyeball of torture has been used on-screen make us cringe and squirm in varying ways. Films like Day of the Triffids and Blindness remind us how vulnerable the human body is, and present the horrific implications of a world without sight. The latest production from Guillem del Toro adds itself to this disparate canon of ‘films about sight’. In Julia’s Eyes, the eyes really do have it. If the thought of eyeballs coming into contact with any dangerous substance, blade or needle fills you with abject horror, then this...

Once in a while, a truly sensational piece of world cinema is released that audiences should seek out. Julia’s Eyes is a prime example of such a film, but having Guillermo Del Toro for a producer doesn’t make this surprising. Released today on Blu-ray and DVD, take a look at our review below.
When Sara (Belen Rueda), a young woman with a degenerative sight condition finally goes blind, her inability to accept her fate seems to lead her to commit suicide in the basement of her house. When her twin sister Julia (also Rueda) discovers her sister’s actions, she cannot believe that suicide was the case instead convinced that she was murdered. Determined to prove that the case is not a simple open and shut verdict of suicide, Julia begins to investigate. With the assistance of her seemingly devoted husband, Isaac (Lluís Homar), she begins to track...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (12A)
(Rob Marshall, 2011, Us) Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Claflin. 137 mins
Ahoy! Aha! Ahem. The excitement of another rip-roaring high seas adventure dissipates almost before they set sail in this lightweight epic of action set-pieces and people trying to get stuff they want. Depp is business as usual and the presentation is classy, but the new blood brings little to this non-party, which feels less like a story than a succession of twists and swoops along well-established tracks – like a theme-park ride, in fact. Oh, hang on …
Win Win (15)
(Tom McCarthy, 2011, Us) Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale. 106 mins
Giamatti's hard-up lawyer inherits a whole heap of surrogate family issues, and a teen high-school wrestling ace, in a wry drama that doesn't really stray out of its suburban comfort zone.

Julia’S Eyes ***
Stars: Belén Rueda, Lluís Homar, Pablo Derqui, Francesc Orella | Written by Guillem Morales, Oriol Paulo | Directed by Guillem Morales
Spanish language horror has been taken up a notch in recent years with the excellent [Rec] and suitably creepy The Orphanage dragging the average up considerably. Julia’s Eyes is the latest offering to arrive on the scenes and while comparisons with The Orphanage are inevitable (it also features Belén Rueda in the lead role as well as Guillermo Del Toro as producer), it’s not quite up to the same standard.
Rueda plays a woman suffering from a degenerative eye disease. After discovering that her blind twin sister (who has succumbed much earlier to the same disease) has hanged herself in the basement of her apartment supposedly motivated by the failure of a recent eye operation, Julia suspects foul play. Refusing to believe the official ruling of suicide,...

If you'd like to read about the now official Oscar submissions for Best Foreign Language Film, click away. But because you -- make that we -- can't see most of the films, due to the hideous state of international distribution, let us use this Academy press release as an excuse to take a different view, a sexytime view... a Beauty Break if you will. Let's gawk at the actors and actresses who are in the submitted films. We'll pretend it's like a Miss Universe pageant (how do you say "shallow" in Finnish?). Randomly selected hotties follow (it's not easy to find info/photos.) whether you're into the men, the women or other. Don't judge!

Young Sierva is already possessed by some sort of magic before she is bitten by a rabid dog in the town market. With her three feet of copper curls and winding necklaces and strange speaking patois and her innocence that runs to the side of stupidity, Sierva is a mark for evil long before the dog latches onto her ankle. As the local bishop strongly believes that disease is the devil made visible, and that her subsequent illness is a mark of possession (not of physical frailty), the marquis’ beautiful daughter is sent to the local convent to be watched, observed, and (if need be) exorcised. But is Sierva really sick? And if she’s not physically ill, is she really possessed by the devil?...
