“I think a lot of people don’t know what we do because a lot is done behind closed doors. And I think what’s great about what we do is that we really are affecting how a movie’s going to turn out, and that’s very exciting,” reveals casting director Victoria Thomas. She earned an Emmy nomination casting the hit drama “The Last of Us” for HBO. It’s a project she says needed the right mix of known and unknown talent to capture the essence of the post-apocalyptic world that viewers couldn’t get enough of. “From the beginning we wanted to have the ability to introduce new actors into it, but also to sort of honor the game and honor the actors who have been a part of it, and also honor the fans,” she explains. When editor Timothy Good shared with then-assistant Emily Mendez the possibility of tackling Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s HBO/Max series The Last of Us, based on the PlayStation game of the same name, Mendez — who was promoted to editor during the season — immediately responded, “That is my favorite video game I’ve ever played, and we have to do it!”

Craig Mazin, co-creator, executive producer, writer and director of HBO smash The Last of Us, says there remains “quite a bit of story to tell” in the video game adaptation. “Our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he said. “We should be around for a while.”
An hour-long panel about the apocalyptic drama on Sunday at Nab in Las Vegas didn’t offer many teasers about Season 2, other than the status report that it’s still in script stage and the fact it will be shot in British Columbia. Instead, Mazin and four key members of the production team drilled down on the craft elements in the first season, specifically visual effects, cinematography, editing and sound.
