Tina Fey Recalls the ‘Cringey’ ‘SNL’ Sketch She Wishes Didn’t Make It On-Air
Image
Tina Fey has the opposite problem of many “Saturday Night Live” castmembers – too many sketches that aired she wished did not.

While talking on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Fey and “Four Seasons” co-star Will Forte were asked about “SNL” sketches they wished made it into the show. Although Forte had an answer, Fey said she actually wishes some of the ones she wrote didn’t make the cut – with one in particular haunting her.

“I had a sketch with the great Jb Smoove, he was on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and is so funny, and he was a writer on the show for a while and he was always so hilarious at pitch,” Fey remembered. “He would often pitch a sketch like ‘I want to do a sketch about a woman who gets pregnant in the butt’ but he would never write it. One week I was like ‘Jb lets do it,...

Sitcom Cast Departures That Didn’t Hurt the Show One Bit
Image
When Steve Carell left The Office, the show never recovered. And when Chelsea Peretti left Brooklyn 99, a critical part of its cast’s dynamic was lost, which cost the show some of its edge. Usually, when a sitcom loses a character, no matter the reason, the show suffers. Sometimes, however, a departure is more akin to when a butcher trims the fat; the show is tightened up and, because time is no longer wasted on them, it’s an overall improved result, if anyone even notices at all.

Here are five such times where a character was removed from a sitcom, arguably for the better…

1 Mark Brendanawicz on ‘Parks and Recreation’

While actor Paul Schneider didn’t do anything wrong as the character Mark Brendanawicz on Parks and Recreation, he was meant to be a love interest for Leslie Knope, yet there was absolutely no chemistry between them. And...

Five Times Sitcoms Introduced a New Character That Everyone Ended Up Loving
Image
Usually, when an established sitcom suddenly adds a new character, it’s a sign of desperation — and one most viewers can see right through. This, in turn, provokes them to attack without mercy. Just think of poor Cousin Oliver, the cute kid brought in for Season Five of The Brady Bunch who is still blamed for the show’s cancellation. Scooby-Doo fans similarly still revile Scrappy-Doo, and even Andy from The Office has his share of haters.

On the other hand, sometimes new blood is exactly the injection of energy a show needs. Here are five examples of new additions that actually made a series much, much better…

1 Frank Reynolds on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’

Season One of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while pretty rough, had an undeniable spark. The only problem? No one watched it. That’s why the head of FX insisted the show bring in...

A Seinfeld Episode Was So Controversial That NBC Scrapped It
Image
"Seinfeld" went to some pretty dark places over its run. It sent its main characters to prison for a year. It killed off George's (Jason Alexander) fiancé Susan (Heidi Swedberg), and in a very cold manner, I might add. There was even a -- decidedly bad -- episode where Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) may or may not have been molested by his dentist. Most sitcoms in the '90s kept things safe and sweet, but Seinfeld, his co-creator Larry David, and the other "Seinfeld" writers had no interest in that sort of thing.

Considering how free "Seinfeld" seemed with pushing boundaries, it's surprising to hear about the moments where the NBC execs decided to draw the line. For instance, there was supposed to be a season 2 episode titled "The Bet" or "The Gun," but it was never filmed because NBC found it way too dark. The episode featured perhaps too much gun-related humor,...

Peter Engel Dies: ‘Saved By The Bell’ Franchise & ‘Last Comic Standing’ Exec Producer Was 88
Image
Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell, its spinoffs and 2020 reboot, Last Comic Standing and many other series, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 88. His family confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.

Engel exec-produced more than 1,000 hours of TV during a 40-year career, mostly for NBC as part of a long-term partnership. His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.

He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

Engel penned a dozen episodes of teen sitcom Saved by the Bell, which NBC aired mostly on Saturday mornings from 1989-93. The popular show helped launch the careers of such stars as Mark-Paul Gosselaar,...

Harley Quinn — “Bottle My Heart” — Season 5, Episode 6 Spoiler Review and Recap
Image
With a new job, Harley Quinn prepares for a day in the city. However, almost immediately, things go sideways. Harley Quinn now must take on the biggest newspaper in Metropolis, but lucky for her, she has a man on the inside. “Bottle My Heart” gets into the silliness of Clayface’s plan, so of course it intersects with the Brainaic threat. When things spiral out of control within the newsroom, Harley and the gang make an unusual commitment to bringing a musical to the stage.

Harley Quinn – Season 5 Episode 6 – The Recap

Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Lois (Natalie Morales) discuss their dreams about the skulls (including sex dreams) as they walk through Metropolis. As Lois connects the dots, she mentions Woodrow, whom Harley accidentally admits to killing. Harley Quinn — “Back to School” — Season 5 Episode 3 Spoiler Review and Recap
Image
The fallout of Ivy’s actions continues in “Back to School.” While she tried to kill off her former professor, lover and attempted murderer, Ivy might have made him into a far more powerful monster. The news of Jason Woodrue’s death spreads fast, forcing Harley to reckon with her partner’s dishonesty. Harley Quinn works best when it frames conflicts through the Harley/Ivy relationship, and “Back to School” is a perfect example of its value. Plus, we get the overly theatrical Clayface back, a huge win for comedy in general.

Harley Quinn – “Back to School” – The Recap

Like other members of Harley’s former crew, Clayface (Alan Tudyk) has made his way over to Metropolis. He performs his one-man-show in the Metropolis Theater in front of a surprisingly thin crowd (given the success of his Vegas show). In his show, Clayface plays an Italian man who died 20 years before Pearl Harbor.

Jb Smoove’s First ‘SNL’ Sketch Mysteriously Vanished
Image
Jb Smoove is probably best known for playing Larry David’s sidekick/soulmate Leon Black on Curb Your Enthusiasm. But years earlier, the comedian was a writer for Saturday Night Live, where he came up with some gloriously bizarre pitches. For starters, there was the “Urine Detective” sketch, in which host Johnny Knoxville would play a gumshoe who solves crimes by tasting the pee of suspects. It never made it to the air.

Another rejected idea was about a couple that met as military helicopter pilots, but even after settling down and starting a family, they keep constantly screaming because they “can’t get the helicopter out of their systems.” He also pitched a sketch featuring host Tom Brady as “Nick Buttkowski,” the first football player to ever smack his teammate on the ass.

But the first sketch of Smoove’s that actually made it onto the show was...

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Star Ted Danson Thought It "Sucked" When He Saw It
Image
Earlier this year, fans said farewell to HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm after 12 epic seasons that never failed to make us laugh. Beginning in 1999, the series starred the outrageous Larry David as a fictionalized version of himself (or was it?) who got into all sorts of trouble thanks to his lack of filter and social manners. Along the way, we were treated to wonderful performances from the likes of J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, and, of course, Ted Danson, who – in all honesty – thought the show "sucked" when he first saw it.

Speaking with Smoove on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name (seen below), Danson revealed that when he first watched the pilot episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, he didn’t get it. "I thought it sucked," he said. "I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David." As such, the Cheers star...

Ted Danson Thought ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ “Absolutely Sucked” Before Guest Role
Image
More than 25 years later, Ted Danson is sharing his honest initial reaction to Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The 3x Golden Globe winner explained how the show “changed my life,” despite originally thinking the Larry David-created HBO sitcom “absolutely sucked” before he began appearing as himself on Season 1.

“Curb really did change my life because it reinvigorated my desire to be funny,” he told co-star J.B. Smoove on his Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. “But we watched the pilot, Mary and I. Mary thought it was great. I thought it sucked.

“I thought it absolutely sucked, and I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David. So, in trying to be an encouraging kind of thing, I said, ‘If you ever need us to play ourselves, we’d be happy to.’ And in that sort of idiocy, I ended up being part of something that changed my life,” added Danson.

Ted Danson Thought the ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Pilot ‘Sucked’
Image
Curb Your Enthusiasm changed Ted Danson’s life. At least, that’s what he told Curb costar Jb Smoove this week on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. Acting with Smoove and Larry David “reinvigorated my desire to be funny.” The irony? When Danson watched the show’s pilot episode, “I thought it sucked. I thought it absolutely sucked.”

Danson’s wife, Mary Steenburgen, liked the original episode but Danson only felt pity. “I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David,” he explained. “So in trying to be encouraging, I said, ‘You know, if you ever need us to play ourselves, we'd be happy to. And in that sort of idiocy, I ended up being part of something that changed my life.”

It’s not the first time Danson has told someone how much he believed Curb sucked. Then again, he wasn’t trusting his own comedy instincts at the time.

Ted Danson Thought ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ ‘Sucked’ and Offered to Play Himself Because He ‘Felt Sorry’ for Larry David — Then It ‘Changed My Life’
Image
Ted Danson appeared in almost all 12 seasons of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as one of Larry David’s nemeses. Playing a pretentious and smug version of himself, the “Cheers” star became a fan-favorite on the show, most recently appearing in the series finale.

But Danson was initially quite skeptical of the unscripted HBO sitcom — and only offered to play himself out of pity for David.

“‘Curb’ really did change my life, because it reinvigorated my desire to be funny,” Danson said on his podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” while talking to “Curb” star J.B. Smoove. But when he first watched the pilot with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, Danson “thought it sucked.”
