Henry Cavill is, by all accounts, a big star with an enviable career. But there's always been a certain tinge of unfulfilled potential to his journey. The British actor was almost James Bond before Daniel Craig won the role for 2006's "Casino Royale." Then, when he did land the role of the Man of Steel in the now-defunct Dceu, Cavill proved to be a great Superman that never really got a great Superman movie. Then, after making a high-profile exit from Netflix's "The Witcher" in 2022, Cavill announced he was back as Superman, before it was confirmed that he was, in fact, not back as Superman.
Despite these missteps and misfortunes, it's not as if the actor has struggled for roles. Following his unfortunate Superman return that never was, Cavill announced that he's starring in and executive producing a "Warhammer 40,000" series for Amazon and is currently gearing up to...

Perhaps it’s because of his stunning bulky physique or his unparalleled acting and fighting chops, but Henry Cavill absolutely eats it up in the action genre. Over the years since his career started, he has depicted his combat excellence across multiple genres, be it adventure-comedy, mystery, superhero, or even fantasy. That said, he prefers to do most of his stunt scenes by himself as well.
Henry Cavill. | Credits: The Cold Light of Day/Lionsgate.
The same was the case when he was working on his 2012 action-thriller The Cold Light of Day, which saw Cavill pulling off some really praise-worthy moves but still ended in the ditch as both critics and general audiences failed it. But that didn’t stop the actor from having a ball with the action sequences working with the stuntman while the director worried for his wellbeing.

France’s Cnc Sets Carbon Footprint Stipulations In Return For Support
France’s National Cinema Centre (Cnc) is set to become one of the first state film and TV bodies to attach green stipulations to its funding. As of March 31, 2023, producers applying for funds across all genres and formats will have to include provisional and final carbon audits for the works when they make the application, the body announced on Wednesday.
The measure, which was approved by the Cnc board this week, is a major pole of its Plan Action! aimed at encouraging France’s audiovisual sector to make the transition towards ecologically sustainable practices and forms of energy. The body said data from the audits would be used for in-house studies assessing the environmental impact of film and TV productions, as well as to devise ways to support the sector as its takes on the challenge of embracing more sustainable practices.

Paraguayan filmmaker Paz Encina’s “Eami” – being sold by MPM Premium – has won the top Tiger Award and a €40,000 cash prize at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), the festival announced Wednesday. The 51st edition of the Dutch event, forced online due to the Omicron wave, will wrap on Sunday.
The jury, made up of Zsuzsi Bankuti, Gust Van den Berghe, Tatiana Leite, Thekla Reuten and Farid Tabarki, was impressed with her complex, magical realist take on the suffering of the indigenous tribes, calling it a “powerful film.” “It gave us the opportunity to dream and, at the same time, a chance to wake up,” they stated.
Inspired by the stories of the Ayoreo-Totobiegosode people, as well as their mythology, Encina created a tale about a young girl who embarks on a journey after her village is destroyed.

The jury said the Paraguayan drama placed a spotlight “on the global massacres of indigenous tribes”. The film depicts the violence committed against the Ayoreo-Totobiegosode people, who lived in the Northern Paraguayan Chaco but were displaced by rampant deforestation.
It marks the second narrative feature of Paraguayan auteur Encina, whose 2006 debut Paraguayan Hammock won the Fipresci prize when it premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard.

A scene from the French crime thriller TV series “Nox,” streaming on Topic. Courtesy of Topic.
“Nox” is a six-episode subtitled miniseries from French TV that is far more complicated than most, but worth investing the requisite degree of concentration. It’s perfect for binging, since that makes it easier to stay with all the characters and subplots unfolding before you. It starts as cops vs. bank robbers, from the vantage of detective partners Julie and Raphael as they figure out which bank will targeted next. They nail it, but most of the thieves manage to escape into Paris’ elaborate underground systems of tunnels. Julie dashes into the dark ahead of her partner and inexplicably vanishes.
The hunt for her is on, but subterranean Paris is three levels of spider webs under the entire city, with the lowest dating back to the Roman Empire’s occupation. No one has explored all of them.

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2008 - another great year for lesser-seen gems...
For some, 2008 will be memorable as the year of The Dark Knight, with its astonishingly unhinged turn from the late Heath Ledger. Alternatively, it could be remembered as the year a legion Indiana Jones fans left cinemas glum-faced, having sat through Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
Elsewhere, Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sang and danced on a Greek island in Mamma Mia!, while Will Smith played an alcoholic superhero in Hancock. But as usual, 2008 offered plenty of watchable movies outside the top 10, which is where we swoop in - like Hancock after a bottle of gin.
So as usual, here's our selection of 25 underappreciated films from the year 2008 - starting with a British horror film starring Michael Fassbender...

Jean Claude Van Damme is gleefully deranged in Peter Hyams' no-frills Friday night beat-em up, in which a park ranger and vengeful ex-con form an uneasy alliance against a gang of marauding mercenaries on the Canadian border. The last decade has been a barren period for director Peter Hyams, who was responsible for the likes of Outland, 2010 and Schwarzenengger's End Of Days, as well as the superior Van Damme vehicles Time Cop and Sudden Death. Recent years have seen Hyams' son John take up the baton and score impressive hits in the Dtv action market, most notably helming Van Damme in the two most recent Universal Soldier sequels. Here John serves as editor for his father, while Van Damme delivers his best performance since Mabrouk El Mechri's...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Henry Cavill Superman: Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past [See previous post: "Man of Steel Trailing Original Iron Man in Ticket Sales."] As mentioned in our previous posts, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel grossed an estimated $113.08 million this past weekend, including $9 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Directed by Zack Snyder, the 2013 Superman reboot stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman. (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel.) Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer’s $270 million-budgeted Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman, debuted with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the box-office-boosting advantage of 3D surcharges, Man of Steel is obviously a much bigger hit than its immediate predecessor. Superman Returns eventually reached $200.08 million in North America, plus a slightly more modest $191 million internationally. Man of Steel will not only easily surpass Superman Returns at the domestic box office, but it’ll also earn at the very least twice as much as Superman Returns internationally.

The Cold Light Of Day
Stars: Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, Verónica Echegui, Sigourney Weaver, Joseph Mawle, Caroline Goodall| Written by Scott Wiper, John Petro | Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri
With action films it seems that sometimes the story writers feel they don’t have to really try. They seem to think that if they can get some recognisable stars that can put in a charismatic performance then it’s a safe bet that they will have a hit. Sometimes this can pay off, if the action scenes are big enough and the viewers are mesmerised into enjoying the big explosions and gun battles taking place in front of them, they won’t notice that they’ve seen the story many times before. This is the problem with The Cold Light of Day.
Will is on holiday with his family in Spain, but his thoughts are back home where he is being threatened with bankruptcy.

Coming in under the radar at the box office this weekend is The Cold Light Of Day starring the new Superman Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. In this clip, Willis and Cavill star as father and son on the run from the bad guys. Willis reveals to Cavill he is secretly a government agent.
With big names such as Cavill, Willis (Red, Die Hard franchise, and Weaver (Avatar, Alien series), it's surprising The Cold Light Of Day is getting a small release by Summit Entertainment. One thing comes to mind the film is probably not that good. The action thriller directed by first-time action film director Mabrouk El Mechri is being compared to a lesser version of Taken (Liam Neeson). The release date for The Cold Light Of Day was

Title: The Cold Light of Day Director: Mabrouk El Mechri Starring: Henry Cavill (‘Man of Steel’), Bruce Willis, Signourney Weaver and Veronica Echegui (’6 Points About Emma’) A desperate man frantically searching for his kidnapped family, who are taken by terrorists in a European country while on vacation, proved to be a surprising hit in 2009, with the Pierre Morel-directed action thriller ‘Taken.’ Making a film several years later, with a similar premise with such proven genre talents as Bruce Willis and Signourney Weaver, seemed destined to become an instant classic. Sneaking into theaters with little to no fanfare at the tail end of summer, "The Cold Light of Day," a dramatically inert and visually muddy thriller from Mabrouk El Mechri ("Jcvd"), is so bad that its mere presence in theaters feels like the behind-the-scenes machinations of some kind of contractual obligation instead of actual enthusiasm on anyone's part. It's telling that the movie was released in the United Kingdom back in April (it was rightly savaged) and is only finally coming out here. And if we were some high ranking executive at Warner Bros., we would be genuinely concerned about the on-screen presence of Henry Cavill, who leads "The Cold Light of Day" and has been cast by the studio as the lead in next summer's Superman extravaganza "Man of Steel." The dude doesn't just lack charisma, he seems to vacuum it from other actors too. Even recounting the plot...

Shot in 2010 and delayed until 2012, with a trailer finally surfacing earlier this year (and very little fanfare since), Mabrouk El Mechri’s action thriller “The Cold Light of Day” is finally getting a limited theatrical release this Friday. You can see why it took so long for the film to, ahem, see the light of day despite an A-list cast that includes Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, and Sigourney Weaver. Fact is, while it’s not a terrible movie, it’s just not a very good one, either. There’s a lot of action, gunplay, a hell of a lot of chases, and exotic Spanish locales. Still, you can never fully shake the feeling that “The Cold Light of Day” is a direct-to-dvd B-action movie masquerading as a slick Hollywood production. Things kick off with Cavill, playing young entrepreneur Will Shaw, arriving in Spain for a week of relaxation with the family.

Summit Entertainment has released five clips for The Cold Light of Day, starring Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver, and Bruce Willis.
Cavill is a young American who’s holidaying with his family in Spain. It’s clear they’re well off since they have their own private yacht, from which his folks go missing while he’s out to fetch some food.
As he sets out to find them, he learns that his own dad (Bruce Willis) is actually a CIA agent, caught in negotiations with a woman (Sigourney Weaver) who’s using the family as leverage.
The film is directed by Mabrouk El Mechri. Weaver, Joseph Mawle, Caroline Goodall, Jim Piddock, Rafi Gavron, and Óscar Jaenada round out the cast.
The Cold Light of Day will hit theaters in the U.S. on September 7th, 2012.

Being John Malkovich was an amazing success story upon its 1999 release. Not only was it a critical darling that got nominated for a bunch of awards, but it also successfully launched the big screen careers of a music video director named Spike Jonze and a lowly TV writer named Charlie Kaufman. In case you didn’t know, those guys have gone on to be big names, and Being John Malkovich earns quite the pedigree by being the start of their careers. On a personal level, I walked out of the movie in ’99 shocked at how unique and inventive it was, and loving how it melded progressive filmmaking with a comic sensibility. Revisiting it all these years later though, I realize it hasn’t aged as well as I’d hoped, and I find myself wondering if it still deserves the level of reverence that it gets. Mabrouk El Mechri’s 2008 film Jcvd didn’t get near as...

It’s time for a round-up of a trio of international filmmakers and their upcoming projects. Exciting, no?
Acclaimed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami most recently grabbed our attention with his fascinating 2010 critical hit “Certified Copy,” and he’ll be hoping that his next project (after “Like Someone in Love,” which screened at Cannes earlier this week) will be met with a similar reception when it eventually makes its way to theaters. “Horizontal Process” will be shot in the Apulia region of Italy, about which Kiarostami told an audience at the Bari Film Festival earlier this year that he loves “the complex architecture of the various cities, which conveys the complexity of the people who live there.” There are no plot details available as of yet, and it sounds like this is inspired far more by the region than by any particular story or script. We’ve already made it clear that, for Mabrouk El Mechri The Cold Light of Day won’t be a worthy follow-up to 2008′s acclaimed Jcvd. A bit of a shame, but something has just entered his field of vision — something that could wash the (potentially) bad taste of that actioner away. Variety informs us he’s currently developing Dalida, a biopic of the (soon-t0-be) titular Egypt-born, Italy-rooted, France-raised singer and actress, which Quad Films — the group behind recent French hits The Intouchables and Heartbreaker — will be producing.
Nadia Farés has been commissioned to play Dalida — born Iolanda Giglotti, though her first name was later changed to Yolanda — who reached her peak fame during the ’60s, performing songs such as “Parole parole” (with the legendary Alain Delon) and “Salma ya Salama,” while also making onscreen appearances in foreign art films. Unfortunately, the performer committed suicide in 1987 at the age of 54; as a result,...

The 80s was the golden era of the comically pumped-up action hero. But this summer they are back on the screen, alongside a new generation of beefcakes. Why?

Since the first trailer hit, The Cold Light of Day has looked like the kind of thriller one wants to sit back with and have some easy fun for 90 minutes or so, without being challenged. Unfortunately, Mabrouk El Mechri’s follow-up to the acclaimed Jcvd is much too predictable and generic for it to work as a successful piece of popcorn entertainment and even the lean running time feels overextended for this story.

Headhunters (15)
(Morten Tyldum, 2011, Nor/Ger) Aksel Hennie, Synnøve Macody Lund, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Eivind Sander. 100 mins
It's a Scandinavian crime thriller, but for once, this isn't like The Killing or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's closer to the Coen brothers, with enough unpredictable plot turns, eccentric touches and morbid laughs to banish the Nordic darkness. There's something of Steve Buscemi about its hero, too: Hennie plays a slimy corporate headhunter/secret art thief who meets his match, loses his grip and literally ends up in the toilet as a result.
Le Havre (PG)
(Aki Kaurismäki, 2011, Fin/Fra/Ger) André Wilms, Kati Outinen, Jean-Pierre Darroussin. 93 mins
Applying his gentle, silent-comical approach to the tale of an illegal immigrant and his French protectors reaps rewards for Kaurismäki in a movie that's whimsical on the surface but built on firm foundations.

Little more than a week will go by without you hearing pundits bemoaning a film that wasn’t screened for critics. Studio PRs might tell you it amounts to little more than embittered reviewers venting about having to pay out of their own pocket to see a new release, but more often than not, it indicates a film that the studio is not happy with, and one which they know will be sunk by negative reviews prior to release. The Cold Light of Day, a shockingly inept thriller from Mabrouk El Mechri – whose last film, Jcvd, was one of 2008’s big surprises – is little more than a showcase for our new Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, and a pretty terrible one at that.

★☆☆☆☆ There were no press screenings for Mabrouk El Mechri's action-thriller The Cold Light of Day (2012), which stars Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis. This usually means that the film is not especially good, and that the studio is dropping it onto unsuspecting audiences in the hopes of recouping as much money as possible before the word of mouth spreads. Predictably, The Cold Light of Day is an exceptionally bad film.

Verónica Echegui has yet to be discovered by American audiences, but she is already a well-known actress in her native Spain, having won several awards for her work in such movies as My Name is Juani (2006) and Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo (2011). However, the 29-year-old actress should start to pop up on the radars of Stateside moviegoers once Mabrouk El Mechri's (Jcvd) new action thriller, The Cold Light of Day, opens this week.
It's unclear how extensive Echegui's role in the movie is, but she is featured alongside Henry Cavill in the two new preview clips from the movie that have been released online. The plot revolves around a young man's (Cavill) quest to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his parents while on a family vacation in Spain and the secret life his father (Bruce Willis) has been leading. Well, even though it won't hit theaters stateside until the fall, "The Cold Light Of Day" actually rolls into theaters in the U.K. next weekend, and as such, a bunch of new stuff has hit the web to get the word out across the pond.
Starring Bruce Willis, Henry Cavill and Sigourney Weaver, the latest effort from "Jcvd" director Mabrouk El Mechri follows a young American (Cavill) whose family is kidnapped on vacation in Spain. He’s got hours to find them, and unravels a government conspiracy in the process and also learns his Dad (Willis), actually works for the CIA. Together they've gotta square off against the villain, played by Weaver. Three clips have landed and they're unfortunately fairly flat. A scene with Willis fighting two cops is fairly sloppy and not helped by being set in a dark forest and poorly cut together. Meanwhile, Cavill's scenes with...

After getting eight new images and a new clip from action-thriller The Cold Light of Day yesterday, Entertainment One UK have sent over two fast-paced action-fuelled clips for us to share with you showcasing Henry Cavill’s brute strength and resourcefulness in the lead.

It seems almost too obvious to mention, but the bad guys in The Cold Light Of Day seem to have overlooked the fact that the Shaw family, their victims of choice, includes Superman and John McClane. This new clip from the film shows why that might have been a bad idea. Seriously, who else do they need to see sitting around the Shaw dinner table to think they might be better off picking on someone else? The Kraken? brightcove.createExperiences(); Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis - for 'tis they - are separated by a sinister gang of nasties when old man Shaw is kidnapped. The baddies represent even more sinister interests, including Sigourney Weaver's shadowy figure, who have dark designs on Willis's ex-spook. Well, at least they've got Ellen Ripley on their side. The man presiding over the carnage is French director Mabrouk el Mechri, director of meta-mindbender Jcvd.

Could Keira Knightley be angling for her second Oscar nomination this fall? You can bet Focus Features and Joe Wright hope so (and we're predicting she will) as "Anna Karenina" now has a solid release date lined up, with "The Cold Light Of Day" getting a new date and "Lola Versus" now appearing on the calendar.

When an action film starring the new Superman (Henry Cavill), Bruce Willis, and Sigourney Weaver exists to almost everyone’s obliviousness — less than four weeks before it hits — there’s a problem. Summit figured their method wasn’t so sound, as Exhibitor Relations tells us that Mabrouk El Mechri‘s The Cold Light of Day has been moved from April 6th to September 7th, four weeks before Willis‘ other actioner, Looper. Not to be unfair to a film which looks utterly inoffensive, but Rian Johnson made the one I’m really looking forward to.
Now, let’s make the smooth transition from studio action films to period dramas. Exhibitor Relations also report that Joe Wright‘s intriguing Anna Karenina has (shock!) a fall release of November 9th. Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Olivia Williams, Kelly Macdonald, and Emily Watson star in the adaptation that gives a little twist to Tolstoy.
