This month brings bad news for action fans, as one of the most underratedmartial arts movies of last year is leaving streaming soon. Released back in May after years of development, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In was met with critical acclaim thanks to its unashamed commitment to balls to the wall action sequences, and now boasts a score of 90% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The martial arts epic hails from Hong Kong, and is directed by Soi Cheang. Based on the novel "City of Darkness" by Yuyi and the manhua (a Chinese-language comic) of the same name by Andy Seto, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In stars several genre icons, with the cast comprised of Louis Koo, Richie Jen, Raymond Lam, Terrance Lau, Kenny Wong, Philip Ng, Tony Wu, German Cheung, and Ip Man star Sammo Hung. Tom Cruise is considered the biggest action star working right now, and for good reason. He is in his 60s, he is still running as fast as some of the most brilliant athletes out there and performing the wildest vehicular stunts imaginable. And it doesn’t seem like he is in the mood to vacate that throne yet. But that doesn’t mean actors from all over the globe aren’t trying to live up to the standards he has set, especially in terms of doing their own stunts. Raymond Lam Fung knocked it out of the park in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Dev Patel was excellent in Monkey Man. Emilio Sakraya took everyone’s breath away in Sixty Minutes. Jun Jong-seo surprised everyone in Ballerina. The work done by Alban Lenoir in the two Lost Bullet films are inspirational. Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Cecep Arif Rahman, Julie Estelle,...

Renowned Hong Kong director and producer Soi Cheang is repping his country for the first time in the International Feature Oscar category, with this year’s box office hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. The film has made over $111 million globally since it first premiered locally in early May, and then went on to screen as part of the Midnights section in Cannes.
During Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season showcase, Cheang talked about approaching the project, which is based on Andy Seto’s Chinese comic City of Darkness, and re-creating the titular enclave of British Colonial Hong Kong which was ultimately demolished in 1993.
The film is set in the 1980s and follows troubled youth Chan Lok-kwun (Raymond Lam) as he accidentally enters the Walled City, discovers the order amidst its chaos, and learns important life lessons along the way. In the Walled City, he becomes close friends with Shin,...

Hong Kong's top-grossing movie of the year is director Soi Cheang's Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Set largely in Kowloon Walled City (long since demolished), the martial arts blockbuster pits warring triads in a battle to the death over control of the tenement slum. Caught in the middle: hapless Mainlander Chan (Raymond Lam), whose search for an identity card has made him the target of expert assassins from both sides. Led by heavyweights like Louis Koo, Richie Jen, Aaron Kwok, and the legendary Sammo Hung, Twilight is also a showcase for a younger generation of performers, like Philip Ng, who plays Sammo Hung's top killer King. Philip Ng has starred in action films for almost 20 years, working with the some of the best...

Since its local release in May, Soi Cheang’s action sensation Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has become Hong Kong’s second-biggest domestic hit ever, earning $13.7 million in a city of just 7.2 million residents. But not only has the film reinvigorated Hong Kong’s fabled martial arts genre; it also has revived — if only fleetingly — one of the world’s most alluring architectural monstrosities: the Kowloon Walled City.
Once the most densely populated place on earth, the Kowloon Walled City was an effectively lawless enclave of Hong Kong that grew from the footprint of a small Chinese military fort into a labyrinthine urban microcosm. With no formal infrastructure, its towering, interconnected buildings were constructed haphazardly, creating a dark maze of narrow alleys and secret passages. Before its demolition in 1993, the Walled City had over 35,000 people living in an area of less than seven acres (which amounts to more than...

The Hong Kong action flick Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In delivers mostly what one expects… in a good way. Though set in 1980, the parts of city in which the action occurs are ominous, labyrinthine and bleak as the future dystopias found in a Blade Runner or Judge Dredd setting. The criminals are running the show while the authorities look elsewhere, having abandoned hope of protecting and serving on their turf. Or surviving any attempt to do so.
Raymond Lam stars as Lok – a nice young man just arriving in the big city, only to be immediately cheated out of his savings by one of the gang bosses – Mr. Big (Sammo Hung! No kiddin’!). He flees from them, innocently charging into the eponymous enclave, run by Mr. Big’s rival, Cyclone (Louis Koo), from which there’s no exit. Like a roach motel in which the lucky ones get to work for the gang.

About 40 minutes into Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, Raymond Lam cracks a smile. Hardly a momentous development out of context, but for Lam’s protagonist, Chan Lok-Kwan—a refugee in Hong Kong’s notorious Kowloon Walled City who’s spent every preceding moment of the film desperately clawing for survival—it marks a point of no return.
Sharing a game of mahjong with three newfound allies, Chan forges the kind of emotional bond that represents both a lifeline and a liability in the unforgiving world of Walled In. It’s one of the many small moments of humanity that dot Soi Cheang’s action epic, and evidence of the director’s capacity for personal expression even at the largest of filmmaking scales.
Though it’s been in the making for over a decade now, there’s still something hard to believe about Soi’s ascent to the top of the Hong Kong film industry.

The apartment complexes making up what used to be Kowloon Walled City effectively sealed it off from the rest of Hong Kong. Soi Cheang’s Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In imagines Kowloon as a kind of steampunk ghetto controlled by an aging gangster known as Cyclone (Louis Koo).
Cyclone’s domain is a marvel of production design (by Ip Man‘s Kwok-Keung Mak) and art direction (by Sai-Hung Chow). Cables snake through alleyways and up walls. Clouds of steam billow over clogged drains and trash cans burst with refuse. The homeless perch on corrugated roofing overlooking perpetually gloomy courtyards. They sleep in dingy doorways and stairways, gather around communal TVs, pushing past each other on endless delivery runs.
Part of a wave of Mainland China refugees, Chan Lok Kwun (Raymond Lam) needs an ID card to avoid deportation. He wins a bare-knuckle brawl in a nightclub, only to be...

Many years after the bloody turf war that ushered in an uneasy era of peace in Hong Kong’s underworld, the notorious Kowloon Walled City serves as a fortified, lawless haven for gangs and refugees alike.
But when a skilled underground fighter runs afoul of the most feared Triad boss in Hong Kong, a bounty is placed on his head despite his connections to the leader of the infamous enclave.

Unfolding in the cramped corridors of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City (it was one of the most dangerously dense urban areas on Earth before being demolished in 1993), Soi Cheang’s ’80s-set “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” delivers on its blockbuster action promise. However, its martial arts spectacle is scattered across a sprawling refugees-and-triads saga that, while adequately laying foundation for the aforementioned fisticuffs, is seldom coherent or engaging on its own.
Based on the Chinese comic “City of Darkness” by Andy Seto, the film follows Chan Lok-kwun (Raymond Lam), a mainland refugee trying to pay his way to a fake ID by winning bare-knuckle brawls. When he ends up double crossed by remorseless triad leader Mr. Big (legendary actor-director Sammo Hung), the desperate outsider steals a satchel of the head honcho’s cocaine and makes a run for the Walled City, which Cheang and cinematographer Cheng Siu-keung capture as a darkened citadel,...

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, Soi Cheang's “Twilight of the Warrior: Walled In” is a true powerhouse, featuring all those elements that made Hk action one of the most popular genres internationally. And even more so, an all star cast including Sammo Hung, Louis Koo, Raymond Lam, Philip Ng in the protagonists' seat, Kenji Kawai in the soundtrack, and John Chong and Wilson Yip as producers. The story is based on the novel by Yu Yi and the manhua by Andy Seto.

The choreography is impressive as people are hurled through walls, thrown off rooftops and otherwise beaten to a pulp, but the editing is frenetic and the characters cartoonish
Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City – once the most densely populated place on Earth – is the perfect movie setting: a Piranesian labyrinth of squalid high rises and dark, cramped alleys, teeming with crooks, lowlifes, addicts and impoverished families running small businesses, legit and otherwise. This 1980s-set action epic lovingly, meticulously recreates the notorious neighbourhood (which was demolished in 1994), but sadly, the backdrop is more interesting than the story.
At heart it’s a tale of a Chinese immigrant caught between rival gangs. Street fighter Chan Lok-kwan (Raymond Lam) is initially scammed by local triad boss Mr Big (a cigar-smoking caricature from veteran Jackie Chan sidekick Sammo Hung). Chan retaliates by stealing a package and, after a great bus-top chase scene,...

Since it was first announced back in 2013, the nostalgia-fuelled martial arts epic set within the labyrinthine back alleys of Kowloon Walled City has nurtured a mythical status to rival the notorious neighbourhood itself. Development of the project dates back to the early 2000s, with such prestigious names as John Woo, Johnnie To, Chow Yun-fat and Donnie Yen rumoured to be attached at one point or other. Kowloon Walled City — one of Hong Kong’s most famous landmarks, or infamous trouble spots, depending on your point of view — fell prey to the developers’ bulldozer 30 years ago. But it remains an icon of the territory’s gritty spirit and is being painstakingly re-created for action thriller feature “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.”

Adapted by filmmakers into numerous movies and television series throughout the years, “The Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre” is a very popular wuxia (martial arts and chivalry) novel written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha). Back in 1993, Wong Jing directed “Kung Fu Cult Master” starring Jet Li, Sharla Cheung and Chingmy Yau; it was a much darker take than the novel and a box office failure. A planned sequel was never made even though it ended with a cliffhanger, but due to repeated exposure on television, it gradually became a fan favorite.
Almost thirty years later, together with a new cast and cinematographer Keung Kwok Man, Wong is back with “New Kung Fu Cult Master 1 and 2” in which the first part is a modern update of the original, while part 2 is the current sequel. Replacing Li is Raymond Lam who plays protagonist Zhang Wu Ji, a young kung fu expert...

Hong Kong is rocked by a series of brutal murders. The victims are suspects of cold cases who have eluded arrest for many years. The gang of killers, who call themselves “The Chosen Sleuths”, are vigilantes who are taking justice in their own hands and openly challenging the Hong Kong police. In response, the police form a task force of their own “chosen sleuths”, headed by a husband and wife team, to stop the criminals.
Lee Jun (Sean Lau Ching-wan) was a legend in the police force as an ace detective before the onset of his mental illness. Once nicknamed “The Chosen Sleuth”, Jun now lives as a hobo on the streets after he was disgracefully dismissed from the force. To prove that he is not a lunatic, but the real “Chosen Sleuth”, Jun joins the fight against the gang to stop their elaborately laid plans. Racing against time, Jun...

To that end, it unveiled on Tuesday a new logo for Huace Pictures, and announced the goal of producing 30 films over the next three years that can collectively bring in $1.5 billion (RMB10 billion) or more at the box office. Now that Golden Week is over and China's colossal work force is back to the proverbial grindstone, now would be the perfect time to see what kept the movie-going public entertained during the national holidays. This time last year the two notable releases were Tsui Hark's Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame and Su Chao Bin's Reign Of Assassins. This year it was again a couple of fantastical flights of fancy that topped the charts. After the first weekend the clear frontrunner was Ching Siu Tung's The Sorcerer And The White Snake - reworking the same source material as Tsui Hark's beloved Green Snake from 1993. Jet Li stars as Fa Hai, alongside Raymond Lam, with Charlene Choi and Eva Huang playing the...

It's been a while since we last saw Tony Ching - or Ching Siu-tung, if you prefer - directing a movie. And being someone with such an impressive filmography, both as director and martial arts choreographer, it's easy to understand the expectations for his latest film, The Sorcerer And The White Snake. If you add the presence of Jet Li as the titular sorcerer you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect of the movie. The story starts with the young herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) as he's making a trip to the mountains to gather some herbs. When he suddenly falls into a lake, the demon White Snake - taking the form of the beautiful woman - jumps in to rescue...

Holy crap! I’ve been lunchin’ on the Jet Li front. While I wasn’t looking, it would appear that boatload of new promotional material has manifested itself on various genre-friendly websites. Below you’ll find an abundance of character posters for “The Sorcerer and the White Snake”, as well as a spiffy new trailer and a music video. What more could you ask for? Not really sure how the “It’s Love” thing fits in, so, for now, I’ll pretend it’s not there. Yes, I’m pathetic. In case you’ve forgotten what the film is about, here’s a synopsis: White Snake (Eva Huang), in the incarnation of a beautiful lady, falls in love with a young herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam). With the help of Green Snake (Charlene Choi), she ventured into the human world and got married to Xu Xian. In a twist of event,...

Today marks the first day of the 68thVenice Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia 2011). The festival continues through September 10th and will include films from all over the world making their debut before curious eyes. This year’s line-up includes a wide range of films from talented directors that have worked in genre films before or are taking the first step into the world of horror, sci-fi, cult, or bizarre cinema. Some of these directors include David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome), William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Bug), Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven), Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion), and Abel Ferrara (The Driller Killer, Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant). If you like your martial arts movies peppered with mythical creatures and a wide assortment of dodgy special effects, then the upcoming Jet Li epic “The Sorcerer and the White Snake” might be right up your cinematic alley. And while I happen to adore motion pictures of this nature, I strongly suspect that the large amount of CGI tomfoolery contained within Li’s latest endeavor may rub some fans the wrong way. It might be a little rough around the edges, but I think the flick looks immensely enjoyable, even if the special effects aren’t the sharpest I’ve ever seen. Besides, I’m willing to overlook such transgressions if the fights are top notch. Here’s what the story is all about: White Snake (Eva Huang), in the incarnation of a beautiful lady, falls in love with a young herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam). With the help of...
