Chicago Pd's current Voight arc has put an end to this fan favorite ship
Image
Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) has always been a lone wolf. It's been hardwired into his character from day one, decades before we met him on Chicago Fire. Arguably the most fascinating element of the current Chicago Pd season, however, is the way that Voight is trying to undo his lone wolf tendencies.

The veteran Iu boss has seen his fair share of tragedy and betrayal, but his dynamic with Ada Nina Chapman (Sara Bues) has allowed him to let his guard down, and give his trust over to someone else. They have teamed up to take down Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), the big bad of season 12, all the while fueling the legitimate romantic option Voight has had since a certain Law & Order superstar.

An 18-Year-Old Western Remake With 1 of the Best Endings of All Time Hits Hulu in March
Image
James Mangold directed films across genres including rom-coms, dramas, and biopics. He also helmed 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, one of cinema's best Western remakes.

James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma joins Hulu's streaming library on Mar. 1. This 2007 Western is an impressive remake of the 1957 film, one of cinema's genre-defining classics. With an impressive ensemble led by Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, and Ben Foster, 3:10 to Yuma is a darker, grittier version of the original, which had a hopeful, triumphant ending. In contrast, James Mangold's remake is character-driven with its complex villain and tragic protagonist. The film was a modest success upon release, and it has since earned a cult following; Western fans consider it a worthy remake, acclaimed by critics and the general audiences.

Quick LinksLiam Neeson's Pulse-Pounding Survival Thriller Hit'The Grey' Left a Powerful Impression on Famed Critic Roger Ebert

Liam Neeson once again proved he's one of the entertainment industry's most compelling leading men when he starred in the 2012 anxiety-inducing survival thriller The Grey, which sees the Taken actor as a highly-skilled sharpshooter who is tasked with protecting a crew of oil men at an Alaskan oil facility from the ever-present risk of a wolf attack. The Original Version of the Greatest Western Remake Streams for Free in December
Image
The 1957 classic Western 3:10 to Yuma starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin is headed to Tubi on Dec. 1 for audiences to stream for free. Heflin stars as a poor rancher named Dan Evans who is hired by a stagecoach line to put the outlaw Ben Wade on the 3:10 train to Yuma while Wades gang tries desperately to free him.

The original film, directed by Delmer Daves, which inspired a 2007 remake starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, focuses on a working-class protagonist in the late 1800s, as opposed to the typical outlaw or lawman in traditional Western movies of the day. The 2007 film has been regarded by some as the greatest remake of a Western movie.

5 Key Takeaways from Netflix’s ‘The Menendez Brothers’ Documentary
Image
With Netflix still experiencing a staggering response to “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the streamer dropped another title on the same subject: “The Menendez Brothers,” a documentary directed by Alejandro Hartmann and featuring exclusive interviews with Lyle and Erik from prison.

Viewers familiar with the life and trials of Lyle and Erik Menendez will hear familiar recollections of old headlines; about the night they murdered their parents in 1989, the spending spree they went on before getting arrested, the dual trial and hung juries, and the allegations of abuse in their home. Hartmann and his team collected over 20 hours of interviews with the Menendez brothers while they serve life sentences in federal prison, as well as new interviews with family members, reporters, jury members, and lead prosecutor on the first trials, Pam Bozanich.

And though the documentary feature doesn’t contain jaw-dropping revelations, it adds dimension to the brothers...

Ryan Murphy Reveals Monster Season 3 Title, Explains Charlie Hunnam's Casting as Ed Gein
Image
A third season of Netflix's Monster series is in the works with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam playing notorious murderer Ed Gein. The season will follow previous seasons that explored the stories of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers.

In an interview with Collider, series co-creator Ryan Murphy explained why Gein was chosen as the real-life killer who serves as the focus of the third season of Monster. He shared that the idea came from discussions with co-creator Ian Brennan, as the two realized that Gein was essentially the first American serial killer to be turned into a "crazy celebrity" of sorts. Murphy pointed out how Gein's crimes influenced several celebrated genre films and he was intrigued by telling the story of how the "Butcher of Plainfield" came to be.

This is in response to the news that a court hearing has officially been set for Lyle and Erik Menendez concerning the double homicide they carried out against their parents. Reportedly, new evidence has been submitted which may bolster the siblings' claims that they had been sexually assaulted by their father. Image
[This story contains mild spoilers to episode five, “The Hurt Man,” in Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story.]

While Netflix true-crime drama Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story arrived to mixed reviews and courted controversy over its portrayal of the of real-life convicted murderers, the limited series about the Menendez brothers has received universal acclaim for its centerpiece bottle episode, which was approached with divergent methods by the two stars who appear in the riveting two-hander.

Monsters’ fifth episode stars Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez and Ari Graynor as defense attorney Leslie Abramson, after the wealthy son of a top L.A. executive was arrested along with his brother for the 1989 murder of their parents. “The Hurt Man” — the episode, written by co-creator Ian Brennan, and named for Erik’s self-appointed nickname — is a single shot, 33-minute slow zoom into Koch’s face as he details the 12 years of sexual, physical and mental abuse he claims drove him to patricide.

Those who watched Ryan Murphys latest anthology series installment, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, have been divided. Whatever the take, however, one thing is tough to debate: Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, who play Lyle and Erik, respectively, have delivered mesmerizing performances as the brothers at the center of the trial. ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ Cast vs. Real Life | Photos
Image
Following the incredible success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have teamed up to tackle the second installment of their “Monster” anthology series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

The limited series seeks to discover who the real monsters in the high-profile murder trial were. The Menendez brothers captivated America, as their televised Court TV trial is one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, at only 18 and 21 years old. Their counsel called it self defense, while the prosecution called them greedy. Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after two trials.

Murphy assembled established actors like Javier Bardem, Nathan Lane, and Chloë Sevigny to embody the real-life adult characters but brought on some newcomers to portray the Menendez brothers themselves.

Ryan Murphy Breaks Silence On Incest Backlash In Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story
Image
Ryan Murphy has responded to the recent complaints about his latest Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, in relation to its suggestion of an incestuous relationship between its two subjects. Even when a project is based on a true story, creative liberties are bound to be taken. Sometimes, facts are altered because the lines of truth are blurred and unconfirmed, while other times facts are adjusted simply for entertainment value. It's nearly impossible to get the full truth because the real-life participants have different views of what the truth actually is.

In the case of Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, it appears creative liberties have been taken a step too far, according to some people. Across its nine episodes, it's heavily suggested that the brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez had a relationship that bordered on an incestuous one, which has rubbed viewers the wrong...

What Happened To Dr. Jerome Oziel From Netflix's Monsters?
Image
Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's "Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" enjoyed record-breaking success on Netflix in 2022, which led to two additional installments of the "Monster" anthology being greenlit. The second installment, "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," is garnering a ton of attention at the moment, continuing the tradition of real-life horrors being re-enacted by a stacked ensemble cast. The unsavory aspects of such a trend are pretty hard to ignore, but it has been proven time and again that audiences gravitate toward these kinds of stories, even when they are actualized at the cost of those who suffered. "The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" happens to offer an appropriate amount of suspense and tension, as there are no questions about the validity of the accusations, but rather the how and why behind the crimes that were committed.

For brief context, the Menendez siblings brutally killed...

Netflix Users Are Warning Each Other Over One Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story Scene
Image
There's a new Ryan Murphy true crime series on Netflix, and in a "water is wet"-style situation, it's generating controversy. "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," which is climbing the Netflix charts, is the latest installment in Murphy's "Monster" anthology, which started with the extremely awkwardly titled "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." That series, which depicted the crimes of cannibal serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, garnered some side-eye reactions and plenty of controversy, primarily from the families of Dahmer's victims, who felt the series was exploiting their tragedy.

"The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" seems to be having a similar effect. In true Ryan Murphy fashion, the show frequently goes over-the-top to depict its true story, and some folks are taking issue, including members of the Menendez family. If you grew up in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as I did, you're likely somewhat familiar with the story,...

Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story Review - Ryan Murphy's True Crime Saga Is An Exploitative Slog
Image
This article contains discussions of murder and sexual abuse surrounding the real life and crimes of Erik and Lyle Menendez.

Ryan Murphy is back in the true crime sphere with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and yet, he hasn't learned any lessons from the missteps of the past. The show is the second installment in Murphy and Ian Brennan's new anthology franchise following 2022's Dahmer. However, unlike the former's American Crime Story, which has seen anywhere from generally positive reviews to critical acclaim, Monster started off on rocky ground with a polarized response to Dahmer, and The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is even more problematic.

Netflix's Monsters Cast & Characters Compared to the Real People
Image
Ryan Murphy has sparked conversation once again with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second installment in his Monster biographical crime drama anthology series that started with Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. The series dramatizes the events that led up to the brutal murders of Jos (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chlo Sevigny) at the hands of their sons Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). It examines the story from before the events to the discovery of their guilt, arrests, and the lengthy trial that shocked the nation.

The series was beautifully cast with actors, both known and relative unknowns, playing people pivotal to the case. This includes the Menendez family members themselves as well as friends, family members, law enforcement, lawyers, and others. After powering through all nine episodes, or even while in the middle of watching, fans are curious about the real-life people these individuals are playing.

Review: ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ Lacks the Clarity of a Riveting Tale
Image
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second part of the Monster anthology by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, is available to stream on Netflix. The series revolves around the double murder committed by the titular siblings in a gruesome way. In an act of brutality, they shot their parents in their home in Beverly Hills. Their fate is dictated by a first trial that ends in a mistrial, followed by a second trial three years later that ends with a conviction. The 10 episodes describe the psyche of the brothers and explore the motives behind the crime in a non-chronological manner that presents an alternative perspective emphasizing case complexity. When such a series goes into the cause of the crime, we involuntarily tend to ponder if we have to sympathize with the criminals and let go of the crimes they committed at least for a while. Here too, the...

‘Monsters’ on Netflix: Who Are Dr. Jerome Oziel and Judalon Smyth?
Image
When it comes to the Menendez case, it’s difficult to tell exactly where the truth lies. That doubly so when it comes to Dr. Jerome Oziel and Judalon Smyth, two secondary figures who became central to the case, largely due to their complicated romantic relationship.

That’s also the case when it comes to Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Hernandez Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s drama about the trial. Played by Dallas Roberts and Leslie Grossman in the series, here’s the truth behind the couple that was ultimately responsible for the arrest of the Menendez brothers.

How are Dr. Jerome Oziel and Judalon Smyth connected to the Menendez case?

Though police suspected the brothers were responsible for the murders of José and Kitty Menendez, Smyth was the one who told the police she overheard their confession. That’s what ultimately allowed them to make an arrest.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story TV Review
Image
Plot: Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story chronicles the case of the real-life brothers convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez. While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse

Review: The ever-expanding anthology series credited to super-producer Ryan Murphy continues to expand. Earlier this week, we shared our review for the newest American Story series, American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez. While that series did not have Murphy directly involved as a writer or director, he does boast direct credits alongside longtime collaborator Ian Brennan on the second entry of Monster; this time focused on the tantalizing crimes of Lyle and Erik Menendez. One of several...

Netflix’s Menendez Brothers Series ‘Monsters’ Has Powerful Performances That Can’t Stop the Story From Falling Off a Cliff: TV Review
Image
“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is an ominous retelling of the infamous crime. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the second in their “Monster” anthology for Netflix follows brothers Lyle (an incredible Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (an outstanding Cooper Koch). Having endured emotional, physical and sexual abuse — the series argues — at the hands of their father, José (Javier Bardem) and mother, Mary Louise, aka “Kitty” (Chloë Sevigny), the pair murder their parents in cold blood. Chronicling the brothers’ upbringing, the murders and everything thereafter, the series is overlong and exhausting. The show attempts to unpack the circumstances that led to the crime while highlighting Erik and Lyle’s trauma. But in the end, the narrative feels futile and bizarre.

“Menendez” opens in October 1989, two months after Kitty and José’s deaths. Riding in a limo as Kenny G’s “Songbird” plays on the radio, Lyle and...

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story episode 1 recap and review: "Blame it on the Rain"
Image
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the sophomore season of Ryan Murphy's Monster series for Netflix, has just debuted its 10 episodes, introducing us to the real-life brothers who killed their parents. Though the first season, following infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, was much more black and white in depicting an evil person, this one is nuanced, unfolding the layers of Lyle and Erik's relationship with their parents and why they did what they did.

As Monsters opens up with its premiere episode, "Blame it on the Rain," brothers Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) seem like your everyday young men — albeit very wealthy and perhaps a little out of touch. But what we can't see on the surface is the pain they face and the complicated relationship they had with their parents, José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty (Chloë Sevigny). Episode 1 of the Netflix Original shows us...

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated new series of Fall 2024. The second installment in Ryan Murphys Monster biographical true crime anthology series for Netflix, the first of which was Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, this nine-episode season follows a different story altogether. Also based on a true story, it centers around the murder of Jos and Kitty Menendez at the hands of their two sons, Lyle and Erik.

The case caught national attention as the trial proceeded. The young men did not deny brutally murdering their parents, and the public was disgusted by their remorseless behavior afterward. That included spending large sums of money to live lavishly with their parents funds. But during the trial,...

Gladiator and 3:10 to Yuma Share a Very Specific Scene Preluding the Action
Image
Both classics in their own right, 3:10 to Yuma and Gladiator stand as great successes that have been met with critical and fan praise. James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma was praised for its performance by Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, with action balanced with a deep character study that made it an enthralling high-stakes Western. Comparatively, Ridley Scott's Gladiator was a stunning visual feast backed by an engaging tale of revenge and redemption with a phenomenal performance from Russell Crowe.

Both films are great, but beyond sharing the same actor, Russell Crowe, you would be hard-pressed to draw any connections between them except the greatness they aspired to and executed to acclaim. However, there is one key scene that ties the two movies together, which fans may have overlooked.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan waited thirty years to make Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story for Netflix. Yet they still might not have captured the complete story of the ongoing Erik and Lyle Menendez saga. The two L.A. brothers became international celebrities, murdering their parents, Jos and Kitty (Mary Louise), in their posh mansion in 1989. Erik and Lyle were eventually found guilty of the murder of both parents after two separate trials as individuals, the state trying them together in one joint trial in the wake of those mistrials. The scope of the court battle dragged on as...

Russell Crowes Underrated Western 3:10 to Yuma Is Now on Netflix
Image
Following an extremely productive 2024, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe has seven upcoming movie and TV projects. As fans wait to see how Crowe fares as Nikolai Kravinoff in Marvel's Kraven the Hunter in December, it's worth seeking out one of the Australian actor's most underrated movies and best villainous performances. In 2007, Crowe co-starred with Christian Bale in the deeply absorbing remake of the 1957 western 3:10 to Yuma, directed to critical acclaim by James Mangold.

Despite grossing over $70 million at the international box office and earning two Oscar nominations, 3:10 to Yuma remains one of the most overlooked movies in Crowe's decorated filmography. Fortunately, the movie has recently been added to Netflix and has been outgunning the competition en route to the top of the most-watched movie charts in the U.S. For those looking for an unheralded Russell Crowe movie that showcases his acting range ahead of his next Marvel movie, catching...

This All-Time Great Western Remake That's Now On Netflix Is Even Better Than The Original Movie
Image
Russell Crowe and Christian Bales 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma is now streaming on Netflix and its even greater than the classic original movie from 1957. 3:10 to Yuma was director James Mangolds follow-up to his Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. It was Mangolds most action-packed movie up to that point, and the action filmmaking chops he developed on 3:10 to Yuma would serve him well when he took on big-budget blockbusters like Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in the years that followed. 3:10 to Yuma remains one of his finest movies.

Released 50 years after Delmer Daves original 3:10 to Yuma, Mangolds remake didnt make a huge splash at the box office, but it was well-received by critics, and its since been re-evaluated as a cult hit. Its rare that a remake of a classic movie is anywhere near as great as the original, and...

Image
The first trailer for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has arrived. Netflix released this glimpse at its upcoming original roughly two weeks ahead of the Season 2 premiere of “Monsters” on Sept. 19.

The trailer starts with the night of the murders. As Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) get out of their car with shotguns in hand, Dr. Jerome Oziel (Dallas Roberts) says, “I’m going to need you to walk me through what happened.” As he talks, Lyle and Erik enter their house. Only flashes of gunfire are seen next.

“Part of this process is the two of you reconnecting, growing closer as brothers,” Dr. Oziel continues.

“Erik and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close,” Lyle counters while sitting on the therapist’s couch with his brother.
