Aftab is a bright, feisty, British-Indian teen living under her parents’ watchful eye amid the hedonism and decay of Thatcher’s London. When her strict and traditional parents decide to marry her off to the first available Indian suitor, Aftab rebels, taking a job at a sex shop and setting off to write her own destiny.
“Alex in Wonderland” is a darkly comedic coming-of-age drama about freedom and rebellion. The six-part TV series created and written by Mandi Riggi, and produced by Kevin Comer of Psychonaut Films, will take part in the drama series pitching competition this week at the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo (Mia) in Rome.
Riggi was raised in the U.K. after her parents left Iran in the wake of the 1979 revolution, and for “Wonderland,” she partly drew on her own experiences as an immigrant child in ‘80s London. “If you were an immigrant, it was automatically assumed that you were uneducated,...

When the matriarch of a British-Iranian family goes missing in London, her loved ones find themselves on an offbeat spiritual journey to track her down, setting their old world traditions on a collision course with their new world surroundings.
Inspired by her own Iranian roots, “Mercy” is the feature debut of British-Iranian director Mandi Riggi. Andrew Eaton (“The Crown”) will executive produce, with a cast that includes F. Murray Abraham, Hiam Abbass, Emun Elliott, Sarah Snook and Yasmin Paige. The film was selected for Mia’s co-production market and pitching forum.
“Mercy” draws on Riggi’s upbringing in the U.K., where she lived until the age of 14, after her parents left Iran in the wake of the 1979 revolution. Though they arrived “with hope in their eyes” and plans for a better life, the director said the bittersweet decision weighed on them long afterward.

Scott Chambers gives a detailed and affecting performance as a young man with learning difficulties
This very affecting feature debut from director Joe Stephenson, adapted from Freddie Machin’s play by Chris New, centres on a teenager with learning difficulties (Scott Chambers, superb) who communicates more easily with animals – both dead and alive – than with people. Living in a caravan with his volatile and violent brother Polly (a convincingly wired Morgan Watkins), 15-year-old Richard befriends Yasmin Paige’s Annabel, whose family owns the land they live on. With its clash of natural beauty and societal disorder, Chicken nods towards the template of Ken Loach’s Kes, with Richard doting on pet hen Fiona, a symbol of his own flightless yet nurturing plight. Like the young Leonardo DiCaprio in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Chambers’s performance has tuning-fork precision, his slightly skewed physical movements and scattershot speech creating a childlike...

Against a backdrop of rural poverty, Joe Stephenson’s heart-wrenching drama heads for a climax sticky with violence and horrible secrets
Somewhere in what would seem to be East Anglia, judging by the road names, two brothers live together in a fetid caravan. Older brother Polly (Morgan Watkins), a bad-tempered thug, does the bare minimum to look after the younger Richard (Scott Chambers) who has learning difficulties but a gentle soul. Richard’s only friend is his pet chicken Fiona, a docile bantam he takes everywhere, until he makes friends with new neighbour Annabel (Yasmin Paige, from Submarine).

Channel 4 drama Glue captivated audiences in 2014, and now the series's official soundtrack has been released.
Ivor Novello-nominated composed Walter Mair produced the score for the show, which followed events surrounding a murder in rural England.
Mair said: "Glue was a fantastic experience that required me to leave the picturesque countryside of England behind and dive into a gloomy and sinister England.
"The music focuses on the relationship between the main characters and their playful and emotive nature, which ultimately heads into much darker territory."
Glue director Daniel Nettheim added: "Walter is a wonderful collaborator and true craftsman of music for the screen.
"His entrancing score elevates the emotion and drama of the series to another cinematic level."
The official Glue soundtrack is released by eOne Music.

It turns out it's pretty bleak growing up in the countryside. If you're not driving yourself into oblivion on drugs or struggling with money problems, you're probably going to end up dead. Well, that's what we've taken away from 8 episodes of E4 drama Glue, anyway.
The murder mystery, touted as Skins meets Broadchurch, failed to tweak viewers' imaginations over the past two months (only 187k tuned in for last night's finale), and responses online seemed much frostier than the critical hype that came before the show aired.
Maybe it was all just too dark and the characters were too unloveable - at least at the very beginning - for it to build up any sort of following. From the cocksure Rob (Rizzle Kicks's Jordan) to the insular Tina Fallon (Charlotte Spencer), the show was perhaps missing an emotional core, someone you could root for.

When rocker Edwyn Collins suffered a huge stroke in 2005, he was left able to say only three things: “yes”, “no”, “Grace Maxwell” (the name of his wife) and “the possibilities are endless”. Filmmakers Edward Lovelace and James Hall have plumped for the latter as title for their docudrama-memoir about the one-time Orange Juice frontman – and not just because No was taken – which we’re happy to share a new clip from below. The Possibilities Are Endless combines the documentary form with dramatised remembrances. This one conjures up the sparks that flew when Collins (played by his son, William) met the love of his life Grace (Submarine’s Yasmin Paige) for the first time in a chippie. It’s set to his 1994 hit ‘A Girl Like You’ and you can watch it in full by clicking below. brightcove.createExperiences();If you’re not an Orange Juice or Nu-Sonics fan and don...

From the pen of BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne of Skins and This is England fame, and featuring a young cast of rising stars, E4's murder mystery Glue has long been one of our most anticipated new television series for 2014.
The tale of a small village rocked by the murder of a teenage boy, this eight-parter looks set to rewrite the whodunnit handbook.
On a trip to the set in Hungerford, Berkshire, Digital Spy's excitement levels reached fever pitch, as the cast prepared us for what's in store...

Why E4’s crime mystery Glue, starting on the 15th of September, is more than just ‘Skins on tractors’…
Despite the obvious connections - it features a group of hedonistic, shagging, pilled-up youths and was created by former Skins writer Jack Thorne - E4’s Glue is a different beast to the channel’s flagship teen show. It’s an eight-part whodunit that repurposes the rural setting of TV’s cosy vet dramas and twee countryside tales into something poetic, dangerous, and sometimes quite beautiful.
Filmed around the village of Hungerford, Berkshire, Glue tells its story against a backdrop of barley fields, grain silos and paddocks. Don’t think that its depiction of rural life is bucolic though. In Glue’s working agricultural world, calves are slaughtered, machinery is treacherous, and stables house million pound investments, not race horses. Glue’s young protagonists aren’t part of a pastoral idyll...

Written by The Fades and This Is England's Jack Thorne is new crime mystery, Glue, coming to E4 in September...
The first two series of Skins, This Is England '86 and '88, and The Fades are all the recommendation anyone should need to watch a new Jack Thorne-written drama, never mind that Glue, Thorne's new eight-part series coming to E4 this September, is looking pretty special in its own right.
Inspired by Thorne's childhood fascination with countryside life around Newbury stables, Glue depicts a rural world little seen on television, one far from cosy period caricatures and full of "ambition, hope, darkness and anarchy".
A teen murder mystery set in a tiny village in the English countryside, Glue tells a story of adolescence, sex, violence and secrets, starring a promising cast including Submarine's Yasmin Paige, Starred Up's Tommy McDonnell, Harry Potter's Jessica Cave, Line Of Duty's Charlotte Spencer,...

After a successful festival run, Richard Ayoade's film "The Double" is making its way to screens this weekend. This "Gilliamesque" take on Fyodor Dostoyevksy's 1846 novella sees a man come to terms with his doppelgänger, where a far more confident and aggressive version of himself makes his life quite a chore.
What the hell does "Gilliamesque" mean?
Terry Gilliam established with a number of movies (including the much-lauded "Time Bandits," "Brazil," and "12 Monkeys") a particular style of film, one that mixes time periods with quirky retro props and a darkly comedic ethos. At their best, films of this type create an incredibly rich world, one that feels lived-in and inviting while at the same time appearing oblique.
So who's this Ayoade fellow, then?
Ayoade, like Gilliam, got his big break in U.K. television, appearing on shows like "The It crowd" and "The Mighty Boosh." "The Double" follows Ayoade's 2010 fim "Submarine,...

This is the Pure Movies review of The Double, directed by Richard Ayoade, and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O'Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Gemma Chan, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige. Fans of British TV comedy will already be familiar with Richard Ayoade, having starred in The It Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and, more recently, Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn comedy The Watch. With The Double he continues his departure from TV land and builds on his success as a director following on from his superb 2011 debut Submarine. The story follows Simon (Jesse Eisenberg), a clerical worker who lives a life unnoticed until the new guy at work James (also Jesse Eisenberg) challenges him to pursue what he wants out of life - in this case, love interest Hannah (played by Mia Wasikowska).

James Hall and Edward Lovelace's documentary about musician Edwyn Collins's recovery from a stroke eschews conventional form to pitch us into the disorientating reality of his life
There's a brief blast of A Girl Like You before UK directors James Hall and Edward Lovelace's documentary, about the post-stroke recovery of Edwyn Collins, jumps off the deep end.
Collins suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in 2005. He was hospitalised for six months. He lost his memory; his speech was destroyed. He was cast off from his previous persona – as the singer/songwriter who fronted the Scottish alt-rock band Orange Juice. He was left out in open water.
Hall and Lovelace interviewed Collins and his wife, Grace Maxwell, six years after the stroke. Collins was still working on recovering his ability to speak. Where some might have struggled with the lack of clarity, the directors instead use this as a hook...

A devious doppelganger or a imaginative office drone? That’s the question I pose after watching this great new trailer for writer/director Richard Ayoade’s (The It Crowd, Submarine) new film The Double.
Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite – confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
This trailer is quick, dark, and funny, I hope the whole movie feels the same way. It looks wholly original, Ayoade has another winner here. The film received many a positive response...

"What is so unique about him?" Magnolia has debuted a full theatrical trailer for Richard Ayoade's latest, the sci-fi Dostoyevsky mind-bender The Double, starring Jesse Eisenberg - twice! Eisenberg plays both James and Simon, the latter of which goes crazy when his exact copy/doppelganger suddenly shows up. We've seen plenty of trailers for this indie already, but another one won't hurt, especially when it's a trailer as magical as this one. The cast includes Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor and appearances by Craig Roberts & Yasmin Paige of Ayoade's Submarine. This was one of my favorites out of Tiff last year and can't recommend it enough. "So, that's it?" "That's it." Magnolia Pictures has released a wonderful new trailer for writer/director Richard Ayoade’s (Submarine) new film The Double. The story centers on meek office-drone Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) who is overlooked by everyone he knows including his crush, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska). Simon’s meager life is then upended when he meets James Simon (Jesse Eisenberg), a man who’s identical in appearance and the complete opposite in personality. This trailer is, quite simply, fantastic, as it highlights Ayoade’s delightfully inventive script, Eisenberg’s stellar dual performances, and the film’s darkly humorous tone. The film received a wildly positive response at the Toronto International Film Festival (read Matt’s review here), and I can’t wait to check it out for myself in a couple of months. Richard Ayoade’s Submarine is easily one of the most memorable directorial debuts in recent years, and his sophomore effort, The Double, sees him returning behind the camera with another brilliant comedy.
This time around, things are darker in tone, adapting Dostoyevsky’s classic novella for the big screen.
In recent months, we’ve been treated to a handful of teaser trailers, showcasing the eerie nature of the doppelgänger story wonderfully. And with less than two months before it arrives on our shores, StudioCanal have launched the first full-length trailer over on Yahoo Movies.

It has been just a few days since we last got a look at Richard Ayoade’s second directorial effort, The Double. But while that was a teaser, this is the new full trailer for the film, which finds Jesse Eisenberg having some double trouble. Take a look via Yahoo. Eisenberg handles the dual role of Simon James and James Simon. The former is a nerdy, unimpressive drone whose unsatisfying life is thrown into chaos by the sudden arrival of the latter, his doppelganger. This copy is actually funnier, sexier and much more confident than poor Simon, and soon the new version is creeping (or rather, marching confidently) into all areas of Simon’s life, including his job and the affections of his dream girl, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska).Drawing from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella, Ayoade wrote the script with Avi Korine and scored a cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Wallace Shawn,...

With definite hints of Terry Gilliam and the early absurdity of Charlie Kaufman, everything we’ve seen of Darkplace/I.T. One of my favorite films from Tiff 2013 was Richard Ayoade's The Double, and I'm going to keep raving about it until you go see it. The film centers on meek office-drone Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) who is overlooked by everyone he knows including his crush, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska). Simon's meager little life is then upended when he meets James Simon (Jesse Eisenberg), a man who's identical in appearance and the complete opposite in personality. The film is a bit of comic thriller, but this new trailer goes more for the creepy side of the story, which is fine. It also highlights Erik Wilson's stark, haunting cinematography. I cannot wait to see this movie again. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Wallace Shawn, Yasmin Paige, Noah Taylor, James Fox, Cathy Moriarty, Chris O’Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Craig Roberts, and Paddy Considine. The Double opens in the U.

Arriving in our cinemas in the spring, the latest trailer for Richard Ayoade’s The Double has arrived, setting the tone very nicely for one of the most unique films of the year.
Loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic novella, the comedy/dramatic-thriller stars Jesse Eisenberg in the dual leading roles opposite Mia Wasikowska.
The film bowed out in Toronto last year – you can read our review here – before crossing the Atlantic for an appearance at the BFI London Film Festival, which is where I saw the film. It’s another instant hit from Ayoade, who made a brilliant directorial debut with Submarine, and is very much still on form with this sophomore feature.
Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things.
