We Treat Women Too Well featuring a woman in a wedding dress holding a gun and some renegades

On Friday May 16, Clara Bilbao's Spanish black comedy We Treat Women Too Well will screen, and on Saturday, it will be the turn of the French, with a screening of rom-com Diary Of A Fleeting Affair.

We Treat Women Too Well is set against the backdrop of Franco's rise to power as a group of ‘Maquis’ rebels get more than they bargain for after taking a bride-to-be hostage. The film features Spanish big-hitters including Carmen Machi, Antonio de la Torre, Luis Tosar and Julián Villagrán.

Netflix Adapting Oscar-Winning Spanish Film ‘My Dearest Señorita’; Streamer Provides First Look At Anti-Hero Drama Series ‘Superstar’
Image
Netflix has ordered another Spanish film, My Dearest Señorita, and unveiled a first look at upcoming dram series Superstar at an event in Madrid.

My Dearest Señorita, produced by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, is an adaptation of the 1972 Oscar-winning film of the same name directed by Jaime de Arimañán, who co-wrote the script with José Luis Borau starring José Luis López Vázquez.

The 1970s film was a romantic drama that explored themes of intersexuality, and was one of very few to tackle sexual orientation in General Franco’s ultra-conservative Spain. It won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 1973 Oscars.

“My Dearest Señorita is an adaptation,” said Calvo and Ambrossi in a statement. “Times have changed, and we believe it is a good time to revisit this story, a story of gender identity and wonderful, mainstream love. The creative challenge is how far we can update it without losing the essence.

"I've been on this case for six years. All I want is to find the girl." Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for the mystery-thriller series titled The Snow Girl, based on the Spanish novel of the same name. It's another crime thriller about a journalist trying to find out what happened to a missing girl. Is anyone outside of Spain familiar with this story? When a little girl goes missing during a parade in Málaga, a young newspaper journalist becomes fiercely insistent on helping Amaya's parents find her. The series stars Milena Smit as Miren, José Coronado, Aixa Villagrán, Tristán Ulloa, Loreto Mauleón, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Prieto, and Cecilia Freire. Frightfest 2014: ‘Extraterrestrial’ Review
Stars: Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas, Miguel Noguera | Written and Directed by Nacho Vigalondo

Nacho Vigalondo made quite the splash with 2007’s Timecrimes, a dark and rather uncompromising time-travel thriller which impressed many. To British eyes it would seem like all had gone quiet on the Nacho front but this was not the case. His next film Extraterrestial was playing Italy when my wife and I were on honeymoon, but we celebrated our third anniversary last week. A delayed release is something we see fairly often but in the case of Extraterrestial it is bizarre as this is a charming but admittedly small-scale film though one which would work with a wider audience than a pure genre one as is the case with the FrightFest audience.

Much of this is down to the simple fact that the film barely dabbles in the sci-fi nature of its opening.

FrightFest 2014: 'Extraterrestrial' review
★★☆☆☆Four years after making a respectable impact with his debut Timecrimes (2007), Nacho Vigalondo returns with Extraterrestrial (2011), a low-budget Spanish science fiction drama that's unlikely to have the same impact. The film centres on Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner), two people who wake up together with no memory of the night before. Before they have chance to figure out what has happened, they come to the realisation that there's an alien spacecraft hovering outside their window. Confined to Julia's apartment, the pair must not only deal with the looming outside threat, but also the arrival of Julia's ex-boyfriend, Tipo (Miguel Noguera), and her neighbour, Ángel (Carlos Areces).

LatinoBuzz: Cartagena Film Festival also known as Ficci 54
The 54th International Film Festival of Cartagena de Indias in Colombia has invited me to attend March 13 - 19, 2014.

One of Ficci's main goals is supporting the development of Colombian cinema. With that in mind, the festival will open with the world premiere of Ciudad Delirio, inviting the audience to get to know Cali, the only city in Latin America that loves all Latin American music, a center of creative development for Colombia's cinema, splendidly and authentically presented through the passion and flavor of salsa. Ficci is once again betting on the kind of cinema that speaks locally and globally, cinema that invites, seduces and embraces all kinds of audiences.

Starring Carolina Ramírez , Cauca Valley dancer and actress renown for her performance in soap operas such as La hija del mariachiand La Pola and Spaniard Julián Villagrán, winner of a Goya for his performance in Grupo 7, Ciudad Delirio also features Colombian actors of such caliber as Vicky Hernández Jorge Herrera , Margarita Ortega and John Alex Castillo. Thanks to a world-class team lead by Spanish dancer, choreographer and filmmaker Blanca Li, who has worked for The Berlin State Ballet, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé and Daft Punk, and by multiple time Salsa World Champion Viviana Vargas, Cartagena will get to experience the madness of one of the most sensual dances on earth.

Ciudad Delirio was produced by Diego F. Ramírez, head of 64-a Films in Colombia, which has produced such films as Perro come perro,Todos tus muertos, Dr. Alemán, En coma, and180 segundos and Spaniard Elena Manrique, founder of Film Fatal and renown for her production of movies such asEl laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth), El orfanato and Transsiberiano, to name just a few.

For seven weeks during the making of Ciudad delirio, 45 locations in Cali, Colombia and Madrid, Spain were overrun by salsa. More than 3,200 extras from Cauca Valley helped to tell this love story that revolves around the show Delirio, a long-standing cultural tradition in Sultana del Valle.

In Ciudad Delirio, Javier, a shy, reserved Spanish doctor, attends a medical conference in Cali, Colombia. There, through a chance meeting, he shares a magical night with Angie, a dancer and choreographer who dreams of being part of the world's most famous salsa show, Delirio, if only she can pass the audition. Javier and Angie begin an impossible romance full of obstacles, surrounded by salsa, and accompanied by a cast of characters that are as authentic as they are hilarious.

The festival's guest of honor will be the prolific British actor Clive Owen, who is known for his diverse roles in films like Closer Children of Men, and The International . The Latin American premier of his latest film, Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties (2013), will be a highlight of the Friday, March 14th event, taking place at 6:00 pm in the Adolfo Mejía Theater, where, after being presented with the India Catalina prize, the actor will be interviewed by Ficci's director, Monika Wagenberg.

Another special honoree will be Mexican director Alejando Gonazlez Iñárritu, who has garnered international acclaim throughout the years with films such as Amores Perros , 21 Grams , Babel, and Biutiful . Established within the film industry as one of Latin America's most important directors of the new century, Iñárritu is currently in-production for Birdman (2014), a film he wrote and directed starring Emma Stone and Edward Norton . Participants of the 54th Ficci will have the opportunity to attend the Tribute honoring this Academy Award-nominated filmmaker on Sunday, March 16th, as well as his Master class the following day during Salón Ficci – the festival's academic program.

In regards to the festival's line-up, it is interesting to note that several of the filmmakers that will take part in the Dramatic Competition are directors who have participated at Ficci with their previous films and have established themselves in the international festival circuit winning prestigious awards. Others will arrive to Cartagena for the first time with their operas primas.

"2014 promises to be a good year for Iberoamerican cinema and we are proud to feature several of the most recent films of the region in our Official Dramatic Competition, in which half of the chosen movies are Latin American Premieres (movies that come directly to Cartagena after their world premieres at Sundance and Berlin Festivals). Eight of the twelve films in the Colombian Official Competition (known before as Colombia al 100%) are World Premieres. This way, we have managed to achieve the goal we set four years ago: becoming the main national and international launching platform of local films", stated Ficci's Director Monika Wagenberg.

Wagenberg also addressed some chances in the festival's rules that will allow for more experience filmmakers to partake in the event.

"One of the big news of Ficci 54 is that this time we have not limited the Official Dramatic Competition to first, second and third time Ibero-American films. Ending this restriction will make possible for those directors from this region who are producing feature films at a fast pace not, to be excluded from the competition" Wagenberg added.

The Official Dramatic Competition will feature the Latin American premieres The Lock Charmer (El Cerrajero) by Natalia Smirnoff (Argentina), Natural Sciences (Ciencias Naturales) by Matías Lucchesi(Argentina), The Way He Looks (Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho) by Daniel Ribeiro(Brazil), Celina Murga's Berlin Official Competition, The Three Sides of the River (La tercera orilla) (Argentina), recent Sundance and Rotterdam winner, To Kill a Man (Matar a un hombre) by Alejandro Fernández Almendras (Chile), Mateo, first film by Maria Gamboa (Colombia), and the world premiere of Dust on the Tongue (Tierra en la lengua) by Ruben Mendoza (Colombia).

This section also includes other outstanding films such as Bad Hair (Pelo malo), written and directed by Mariana Rondón (Venezuela) which comes to Ficci after its triumph at the San Sebastián Film Festival; The Mute (El Mudo), directed by brothers Daniel and Diego Vega (Perú), which had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival and are coming back to Ficci after competing winning Best Director award in 2010; premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival and awarded the Concha de Plata for Best Director in San Sebastián, comes Club Sándwich by Fernando Eimbcke(México), and the 12th film in this section is Root (Raíz) by Matías Rojas Valencia (Chile), the winner of Best Chilean Film winner at the Valdivia Film Festival.

The Official Documentary Competition will showcase the world premieres of El color que cayó del cielo by Sergio Wolf (Argentina) and Heaven or Hell (Infierno o paraíso) de German Piffano(Colombia); as well as the Latin American premiere of The Silence of the Flies (El silencio de las moscas) by Eliezer Arias (Venezuela), Marmato by Mark Grieco (Colombia, USA), and Apples, Chickens and Chimeras (Manzanas, pollos y quimeras) de Inés París (España). The rest of the program includes Argentine Street Years (Años de calle) by Alejandra Grinschpun, I Feel Much Better Now (E-agora? Lembra me) by Joaquim Pinto(Portugal), Naomi Campbel by icolas Videla and Camila José Donoso (Chile), Cesar's Grill (El Grill de Cesar) by Dario Aguirre, I Will Be Murdered (Seré asesinado) by Justin Webster (Spain), Mexican documentary, Elevator (Elevador) by Adrián Ortizl and the most recent work by talented Brazilian documentary film director Maria Ramos , Hills of Pleasures (Morro dos Prazeres).

Lastly, in the Colombian Official Competition we will present the world premieres of Banished (Desterrada) by Diego Guerra, Manos sucias by Joseph Wladyka, Memorias del calavero and Tierra en la lengua by Rubén Mendoza, Monte adentro by Nicolás Macario Alonso, Parador Húngaro by Aseneth Suarez and Patrick Alexander, Infierno o paraíso by Germán Piffano; as well as the Latin American premieres of Inés, memorias de una vida by Luisa Sossa; Gente de papel, con el alma en la selva by Andrés Felipe Vásquez, Mateo by Maria Gamboa, Marmato by Mark Grieco and the Colombian premiere of Mambo Cool by Chris Gude.

Review: Extraterrestrial
If you're in a summer movie frame of mind and looking for an FX-laden sci-fi adventure, a title like Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre), opening Friday for a week-long run in Austin, might seem like an obvious choice.

But it isn't. Despite the movie's title and summer release date, the extraterrestrial elements in this Spanish import from Fantastic Fest regular Nacho Vigalondo serve only as a backdrop for an intriguing, witty and rather minimalist comedy about the relationships between four characters. There is little action and barely a hint of digital effects; although Extraterrestrial is set during an alien invasion, it focuses on a far more interesting story about human nature.

The film opens as a young Spaniard, Julio (Julián Villagrán), awakens after a very successful night of drinking and womanizing. He finds himself in the apartment of Julia (Michelle Jenner), a woman no one would mind picking up in a bar. The...

Extraterrestrial Review
Sex, Lies, and Alien Videotape?

I have to admit, after watching Nacho Vigalondo‘s sci-fi hit Timecrimes, a different tone was expected from Extraterrestrial. Something darker and more sinister. Something with an apocalyptic bite or evil alien conquerors. Yet, here I was watching a sci-fi script that played with hints of Seinfeld situational awkward comedy that completely agreed with director Jason Reitman, who compared Vigalondo to Woody Allen.

Could this tonal surprise be viewed as a bad thing? Possibly, depending on your expectations, but I’ll delve deeper into that issue a tad bit later. Instead, enjoy the delightfully light-hearted sci-fi/romance mash-up Vigalondo created and don’t dwell on what could have been. Be thankful for the art and you’ll be able to appreciate Nacho’s hybrid genre crossing film..

So how does this Woody Allen comparison come about? Much like Annie Hall, or most films from Allen’s arsenal for that matter,...

From the Press Release

In the year of our pending apocalypse, Entertainment One and Focus World are excited to bring to home audiences Extraterrestrial, a sexy, darkly hilarious and apocalyptic new sci-fi comedy from Nacho Vigalondo, the acclaimed Spanish director of Timecrimes (now being remade into a major motion picture by Dreamworks).

When groggy and hung-over Julio (Julián Villagrán) wakes up in a strange apartment after a night of partying, he’s pleasantly surprised to discover it belongs to a beautiful one-night stand he can’t remember – Julia (Michelle Jenner). What’s already an awkward situation is made even more so when they discover giant flying saucers hovering above the now-deserted city.

Review: ‘Extraterrestrial’ Finds Love and Laughs During a Possible Apocalypse (Spain)
The romantic comedy is a genre represented most frequently by stale, generic films that follow a paint-by-numbers formula devoid of personality and charm. To be sure, even the best examples follow a well established structure, but they also manage to make their characters endearing and likeable in situations both entertaining and recognizable. That recognition factor is important, so it’s rare to find a rom-com willing to take chances with its setup and subvert expectations along the way. Julio (Julián Villagrán) awakens in an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar apartment with a vaguely familiar woman. He sees Julia (Michelle Jenner) walking about clad only in a t-shirt, but whatever magic worked the night before to earn him an invite back to her place is apparently in short supply the morning after. She hurries him along, hustling him on his way, but they’re interrupted by Julia’s nosy neighbor, Angel (Carlos Areces). Angel has a crush on...

[Interview] ‘Extraterrestrial’ Writer/Director Nacho Vigalondo on Humanity, Hitchcock & More
After finding great international success with his debut feature film Timecrimes in 2007, writer/director Nacho Vigalondo performed a bit of a 180 for his sophomore effort.

Coming to the Toronto International Film Festival last year with a romantic comedy set to the backdrop of an alien invasion, his Extraterrestrial showed he would not be pigeonholed to dark thrillers with twists a la M. Night Shyamalan. It’s a move that showed his versatility and creative story-telling approach—two things that must have appealed to Hollywood with him now attached to direct an adaptation of Mark Millar‘s Supercrooks.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the auteur recently about his new film and his love of time as both motif and plot construction. A good-humored, self-deprecating soul, Nacho Vigalondo’s name deserves to be remembered from this point forward if it hasn’t already. His cinematic future is looking very bright.

[Review] Extraterrestrial
You wake in a strange place without memory of arriving. You see light’s curved shadows on the wall through clouded eyes while a chorus of clanging is heard in the next room. Disoriented, mildly frightened, and without a clue to what is going on, you’re lost trying to recall the erased minutes of an alcohol-infused evening eerily similar to a crackpot’s account of alien abduction. But rather than a greyed creature with probe in hand, the figure moving in the kitchen is an attractive young woman wearing only a t-shirt. As startled as you by the circumstances of your cohabitation, the realization of what more than likely transpired in your drunken haze only escalates a palpable awkwardness further. A one-night stand that forgot to end, your embarrassed goodbyes are interrupted after discovering the spaceship hovering outside the window.

This is our introduction to Julio (Julián Villagrán) and...

Diff 2012 Reviews: ‘Extraterrestrial,’ ‘Bindlestiffs,’ ‘Quick,’ ‘Robocop’
“Extraterrestrial”

Director: Nacho Vigalondo

Writer: Nacho Vigalondo

Starring: Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán

“Extraterrestrial” is a movie I’ve been excited about for a while, in part because of how it was marketed – the small, almost invisible glimpses of the alien ships in the posters, and the creative viral marketing aspect to it all. Later on, when it was revealed to be something of a comedy, with a smirking Spaniard looking out and holding a glowing tennis ball, everyone cocked their eyebrows, and wondered just what this thing was going to turn out to be.

It’s a slighter film than one would initially expect, being more dependent on the inter-dynamics of the three people and their ever-revolving love triangle at the heart of it than on any kind of spectacle that you would expect from an alien invasion movie, but that’s not particularly a bad thing. There...

Trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial
If you have not seen Nacho Vigalondo's Timecrimes, then literally stop reading this and seek it out. Today we have the full trailer for his next film Extraterrestrial, thanks to BleedingCool. The film looks to be another great genre film, and reminds me a bit of Signs mixed with Shaun of the Dead.

Here is the descripton from Tiff:

Nacho Vigalondo has already captivated audiences by blending genres in his relentlessly inventive debut feature, Timecrimes. For his follow-up Extraterrestrial, an ingenious take on the alien-invasion film, Vigalondo skilfully merges science fiction and romantic comedy — along with a wicked streak of gallows humour — to shed light on some of the less convivial elements of human behaviour.

Strangers Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner) wake up beside one another in Julia’s apartment, groggy, hungover and unsure how they met. Julia is about to send Julio on...

Watch: Full Trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's New Comedy 'Extraterrestre'
"Love... is from another world." A brand new full-length trailer for Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo's new sci-fi/drama/comedy Extraterrestre, which just means Extraterrestrial in Spanish, has debuted over on Vimeo (via Bleeding Cool). Don't let that name trick you, this is barely sci-fi at all and there's not many extraterrestrials in it (no spoiler), but there is a beautiful lead actress by the name of Michelle Jenner. And you will watch this (over and over) for her alone. Julián Villagrán also stars as Julio, with Raúl Cimas and Carlos Areces. This trailer gives you an idea of the characters and how amusing is, give it a shot below. Watch the full subtitled official trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestre, embedded via Vimeo: "There’s only one sane response when you wake up to a sky full of alien invaders – run like hell. Trailer For ‘Extraterrestrial,’ a Sci-Fi Comedy From ‘Timecrimes’ Director Nacho Vigalondo
After his excellent time-travel film Timecrimes, Nacho Vigalondo has changed things up for his next project, Extraterrestrial. I had the chance to check it out at Tiff (review here), where I had fun with the comedic elements, as this film is much more about relationships than science-fiction. The ending is muddled and unsatisfying, but the journey is a fun one.

We have a new trailer today (via Bleeding Cool) which provides our first subtitled look at the film for English-language audiences. It does a good job at conveying the best elements, the back-and-forth relationship with our male lead and the female, whose house he wakes up in. Check it out below for the film starring Julian Villagran, Michelle Jenner, Raul Cimas, Carlos Areces and Miguel Noguera.

Plot:

Strangers Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner) wake up beside one another in Julia’s apartment, groggy, hungover and unsure how they met.

Spanish Cinema in New York
Spanish Cinema Now opened on Friday with Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial (it screens again on Thursday) and runs through December 22. Blogging for the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Jeffrey Bloomer notes that this year's festival features a 10-film retrospective of films by the late Luis García Berlanga, "who helped fuel a resurgence in Spanish cinema in the desolate years following the Spanish Civil War…. Two of Berlanga's most acclaimed films screen back-to-back on December 11 and 15. His beloved debut, Welcome Mr Marshall! (1953) [clip above], follows a village's misbegotten attempts to finagle post-war American aid from visiting officials, while Plácido (1961) is a winking Oscar-nominated Christmas story about a town where affluent families each take in a poor person for the holiday. Both are considered to be among Berlanga's masterpieces."

Back, though, for a moment to Extraterrestrial, "sci-fi comedy of cuckolding — a cynical and screwball study of love and suspicion," as Henry Stewart calls it in the L.

Nacho Vigalondo on "Extraterrestrial" and personal philosophies of filmmaking and karaoke
Of course I interviewed director Nacho Vigalondo in a karaoke room. If you want to find Vigalondo at Fantastic Fest, a karaoke room at The Highball (a.k.a. the Alamo Drafthouse's bar-slash-bowling-alley-slash-karaoke-palace) is always the best place to look. The man takes karaoke seriously, as evidenced by this photo he posted on Twitter just last night. During our interview about his new movie "Extraterrestrial," Vigalondo repeatedly picked up and flipped through one of the Highball's binders of karaoke songs, like a junkie absent-mindedly fiddling with a needle while waiting for his dealer to bring his next fix.

As a bit of a karaoke nut myself, I had to start our conversation there. And, as it turned out, Vigalondo's personal philosophy about karaoke informs his personal philosophy about filmmaking which, in turn, guided the making of "Extraterrestrial." Vigalondo likes to perform songs he's never tried before; in turn, his new...

‘Extraterrestrial’ Review: Layered Lies, Laughs and an Alien Invasion by Nacho Vigalondo [Fantastic Fest 2011]
Nacho Vigalondo
Buying a ticket to see a film called Extraterrestrial brings with it a lofty set of expectations. You expect sci-fi, you expect action and most of all you expect to see aliens. Nacho Vigalondo's second feature film says screw that. His Extraterrestrial has an alien invasion in it [1] but it's there only to put a new spin on the romantic comedy, a spin only the man behind Timecrimes could create. Incredibly, Extraterrestrial feels almost as layered as that film, but instead of multiple levels of time-travel, this features multiple levels of lies, laughs and love. It's a wonderful, almost screwball, comedy that does pretty much everything right. Extraterrestrial begins with Julio (Julián Villagrán) waking up with little memory of what we can only assume was a wild night of drinking and fornicating. He's in the apartment of the lovely Julia (Michelle Jenner) and neither have much idea of what...

Fantastic Review: ‘Extraterrestrial’ is Human-Focused Sci-Fi
A beam of light threatens the poor, hungover eyeballs of Julio (Julián Villagrán) who wakes up in a bed he’s never been in before. That bed belongs to Julia (Michelle Jenner) who slinks around her apartment cleaning up from a night of drinking and random sex with a stranger. Up in the sky, a UFO has appeared floating above the city. In fact, they’re all over the place. Overnight, while two people were blacked out drunk, at least thirty have appeared over Spain. Who knows how many more all over the world. However, writer/director Nacho Vigalondo is less concerned about the ship and more concerned about the play-like humor and drama to be mined from a tangled relationship because, as it turns out, Julia is in high demand (especially by her boyfriend). Julio has unwittingly stumbled into a fling with a beautiful young woman whose awkward neighbor Ángel (played with sheer, socially...

Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre) | Review - Fantastic Fest 2011
Director: Nacho Vigalondo Writer: Nacho Vigalondo Starring: Michelle Jenner, Julián Villagrán, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas Nacho Vigalondo's Timecrimes was my favorite film of Fantastic Fest 2007, so I entered the Fantastic Fest 2011 screening of Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial with astronomically high expectations. Shockingly, the two films are night and day: Timecrimes is complex and heady, yet maybe a wee bit overly ambitious; Extraterrestrial is incredibly simple and restrained. Extraterrestrial is nothing like I expected it to be, but that is not necessarily a bad thing... Julio (Julián Villagrán) wakes up in an unfamiliar apartment after one hell of a bender. Enter an incredibly attractive young woman whose name is eerily similar to his own, Julia (Michelle Jenner). Julia and Julio surmise that they must have drank themselves into a blacked-out state of oblivion on Saturday night, and they have slept most of Sunday away. They fumble through an incredibly awkward conversation. It...

Fantastic Fest: 2011 Fantastic Fest Awards Results
Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70+ films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!

Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! So be sure to keep an eye out for...

“You’re Next,” “Bullhead” win big at Fantastic Fest
By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: “You’re Next,” Adam Wingard’s horror thriller about a family terrorized my masked intruders, on the Best Picture award at this year’s Fantastic Fest, which hosted thousands of genre-film fans in Austin, Texas.

The year’s fest opened with a screening of Tom Six’s “Human Centipede” sequel, and featured a regional premiere of Morgan Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope.”

Both “Next” and “Hope” played the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month before stopping in Austin. “Next” practically swept the Horror category at the festival, grabbing Director for Wingard, Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett, and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson. Sean Harris, meanwhile, earned Best Actor for “A Lonely Place To Die.”

A full list of winners is below:

Lane Hughes in You're Next (2011)
"You're Next" wins big at the Fantastic Fest Awards
Lane Hughes in You're Next (2011)
Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.

The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.

Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.

Fantastic Fest ’11 Review: Extraterrestrial
Nacho Vigalondo returns to Fantastic Fest with his followup to his 2007 film Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial. While Timecrimes catered towards the genre crowd, more specifically science fiction audiences. It was not really out of the ordinary to see that he was going to have a film dealing with some sort of alien invasion. However, you can scrap all of that because that is not the case as the film is more of a romantic comedy than a genre picture.

Julio (Julián Villagrán) wakes up after a heavy night of drinking and partying to a house and bed different from his own. He comes to find Julia (Michelle Jenner) inside the house. Unfortunately, Julia regrets the night and wants to get Julio out of the house as quickly, but as politely, as possible. That is until they both realize that something is going on outside. Their phones and the television in the living...

[Tiff Video Review] Extraterrestrial and Friends with Kids
Following up one of my personal favorite time-travel movies, Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo has unspooled his sci-fi/romance/comedy/drama Extraterrestrial (trailer here) in Toronto. Don’t be fooled by the title and the elements it suggests, as the latter three genres mentioned are more represented. Julio (Julián Villagrán) wakes up in a hungover slumber, soon realizing he is in unfamiliar territory at the apartment of a woman (Julia, played by Michelle Jenner) with whom he came home with the previous night.

Vigalondo takes his precious time as we stay in Julio’s perspective, discovering as he does the phones and cable are out and the streets are empty. A portion of a hovering spaceship is spotted outside and they keep watch via a camcorder and Av cable hooked to their HDTV. And that is where the sci-fi element ends. Although it mostly takes place in one apartment, this is...

Extraterrestrial Teaser Trailer From Nacho Vigalondo
There is sense of intensity in Nacho Vigalondo’s Extraterrestrial, the follow up film to his Time Crimes. That’s because the entire trailer for Vigalondo’s Extraterrestrial is in Spanish and while I may not understand what they are saying that language barrier plus the mystery of what happened to the population seems to generate some interest. In Extraterrestrial, two people have just woken up after a night of heavy drinking. Clearly hungover they come to discover that an alien invasion has just taken place. According to Vigalondo the film will combine science fiction, romance and black comedy with a look into the human psyche.

Here’s the Tiff description of the film:

Nacho Vigalondo has already captivated audiences by blending genres in his relentlessly inventive debut feature, Timecrimes. For his follow-up Extraterrestrial, an ingenious take on the alien-invasion film, Vigalondo skilfully merges science fiction and romantic...

Nacho Vigalondo’s ‘Extraterrestrial’ Trailer
After making one of the most entertaining time travel films ever with Timecrimes, Nacho Vigalondo is back with Extraterrestrial. As you probably picked up from the helmer and title, this is both his return to sci-fi and attempt at a new genre conceit. Some images and posters have been cropping up over the past year or so, and an appearance at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival has led to us receiving our first trailer.

Those hoping to get a true look at the movie might be a little disappointed, as this isn’t subtitled. Although much of what needs to be known is communicated visually, it’s still odd to watch footage from a movie and not know what any of the dialogue actually means. (The lengthy plot description on the Tiff website tells you what you need to know, if that counts for anything.)

The up side...

Teaser trailer for Extraterrestrial
Extraterrestrial is Timecrimes‘ director Nacho Vigalondo follow-up, and here’s the new teaser trailer. The film will play at this year’s upcoming Fantastic Fest.

Sadly, there isn’t English dubs for the trailer, Fyi:

Strangers Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner) wake up beside one another in Julia’s apartment, groggy, hungover and unsure how they met. Julia is about to send Julio on his way when both notice the uncanny silence gripping Julia’s downtown neighbourhood. Looking out the window, they see Madrid’s skyline dotted with enormous spaceships. The only other person left in the building is Julia’s fawning and somewhat creepy neighbour, Ángel (Carlos Areces), who explains that there’s been an exodus of people fleeing the city. When Julia’s boyfriend Tipo (Miguel Noguera) shows up — having now shifted into survivalist mode — the dynamics between the four reach heady extremes.

‘Extraterrestrial’ Teaser Trailer – Nacho Vigalondo’s Follow Up To ‘Timecrimes’
Nacho Vigalondo
You've just met the girl of your dreams. It seems like your life is finally looking up. Just then...aliens invade. That's the set up of Extraterrestrial, Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo's follow-up to the amazing Timecrimes, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival followed by its United States premiere at Fantastic Fest. With those screenings in the coming days, the verdict is on the way as to whether or not Vigalondo's film lives up to the promise of his first feature. For now, check out the teaser trailer for the film to see what we're in store for. Thanks to El Cultural [1] (via Bleeding Cool [2]) for the heads up to this trailer. Unfortunately for us who don't speak or read Spanish, the trailer is in its native language without subtitles. If you know the basic plot of the film, though, you can pretty much piece everything together.

Extraterrestre (2011) Teaser Trailer: Nacho Vigalondo, Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner
Extraterrestre Teaser Trailer. Nacho Vigalondo‘s Extraterrestre (2011) teaser trailer stars Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas, and Miguel Noguera. Extraterrestre‘s plot synopsis: “Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?”

This is certainly one quirky looking film: romance, black comedy, and science fiction mixed together. If its balanced it could be entertaining.

More on the plot of Extraterrestre:

“Julio wakes up – horribly hungover and with no memory of the night before – next to a mindblowingly sexy girl, in a stunning apartment. She wants him to get out now but the alien invasion that’s just begun outside is the perfect excuse for Julio to stay.”

Teaser Trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial
Here's a teaser trailer giving us our first look at some footage from the Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) film Extraterrestrial. We've been following this film for awhile, it's basically an alien invasion with an added love story element. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story plays out.

The cast of the film includes, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Cimas and Miguel Noguera.

Here's the Synopsis:

New Images From Nacho Vigalondo’s ‘Timecrimes’ Follow-Up ‘Extraterrestrial’
If you haven’t seen Nacho Vigalondo‘s Timecrimes, I suggest going to do so right now. We know a Us remake is currently in development, courtesy of Steve Zaillian (who has Moneyball and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo coming later this year), but the original is a gripping, fun exploration of time travel with stellar mise-en-scène.

It has just been announced the director will premiere his long-awaited sci-fi/romance/comedy Extraterrestrial and now we have a new batch of images. We already showed off the poster, but see the new images above and below for the film starring Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Cimas and Miguel Noguera.

Poster and stills for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial
We first shared some posters for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial in September of last year. Today we have a new poster and some stills from the film, which is an alien invasion love story. Sounds pretty cool to me. There have been plenty fo alien invasion films, but not many that have thrown some romance into the mix. Filming recently wrapped just in time for sale at Cannes this year, so let's hope that audiences will be able to see it in the near future.
