Wrote in her journal about her experiences as a young teenager. Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Thirteen (2003), read her journal and the two then decided to turn the experiences into a film. Hardwick would sit at her computer and create a structure for the film and Reed would provide the dialogue.

Thirteen (2003), which was written by Reed and the director, is a partially autobiographical film about Reed's rebellious life as a thirteen year old.

She moved out on her own when she was 14.

Has a daughter: Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder (b. July 25, 2017) with husband, Ian Somerhalder.
