Director Babak Anvari Teases New ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel: “You’re Going To Get Something Amazing”
Image
Babak Anvari is set to direct a new sequel to Cloverfield, which is reportedly a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’s original 2008 film.

In a new interview during the SXSW premiere of his latest film Hallow Road, Anvari teased the new sequel.

“So sad that I cannot because everyone on that team is very secretive, which I understand,” Anvari told Countdown City Geeks. “But whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”

Although Anvari didn’t disclose any details about the follow-up film, he did express his excitement about the project as “high.”

Deadline reported in December 2022 that Anvari was attached to direct the new Cloverfield movie with Joe Barton writing the script, J.J. Abrams producing for Bad Robot, along with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard are also attached as executive producers.

Cloverfield (2008)
Cloverfield (2008) Movie Ending Explained: Where Did Clover Monster Come From?
Cloverfield (2008)
Monster movies have long held a captivating place in the landscape of cinema, offering audiences a thrilling escape into worlds inhabited by the unknown and the extraordinary. From the classic black-and-white horrors of the early 20th century to the CGI-enhanced spectacles of modern filmmaking, these films tap into primal fears and societal anxieties, reflecting cultural attitudes and human experiences. At their core, monster movies explore themes of fear, isolation, and the struggle between humanity and the monstrous “other.” Whether depicting the terror of werewolves or killer space aliens or the tragic story of a misunderstood beast, these films serve as a canvas for filmmakers to examine what it means to be human.

Matt Reeve’s “Cloverfield” (2008) stands out as a unique entry in the monster/disaster movie genre, blending the conventions of alien horror with a distinctive narrative style. Set against the backdrop of a city under siege, the film...

This 2008 Found-Footage Film Revolutionized Viral Movie Marketing
Image
Cloverfield is a found-footage film that chronicles a group of friends as they embark on a rescue mission through New York City during a rampaging monster attack. As the group of New Yorkers enjoy a going-away party, the night quickly descends into madness as a dangerous threat wreaks havoc on the Big Apple. Suddenly, a creature the size of a skyscraper terrorizes the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Directed by Matt Reeves, now famously known for his work on The Batman, and written by Daredevil creator Drew Goddard, Cloverfield uses a point-of-view film style to immerse the audience directly into the chaos ensuing in New York City.

Released in 2008, Cloverfield was an instant box office success. Produced on a modest $25 million budget, the sci-fi thriller earned over six times its budget grossing $172 million worldwide. The film's immense box office success is largely attributed to its innovative marketing campaign.

New Cloverfield film will be a very cool sequel to the original
Image
2023 happens to be the 15th anniversary of the release of the creature feature Cloverfield (watch it Here), which was directed by Matt Reeves and spawned an anthology franchise, being followed by Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and Julius Onah’s The Cloverfield Paradox. Last year, Under the Shadow‘s Babak Anvari signed on to direct a new Cloverfield sequel from a screenplay by iBoy writer Joe Barton. The only information we’ve really learned about this new Cloverfield sequel is that, unlike the original film, it won’t be presented in the found footage style. But during an interview with CinemaBlend, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg revealed that the film is setting aside the anthology approach to be a direct sequel to the original film. He also said that it’s going to be “very cool”.

CinemaBlend was actually hoping Trachtenberg would tell them a direct follow-up to...

This Cloverfield 2 Pitch Is Better For The Franchise Than The Version Currently In Development
Image
10 Cloverfield Lane sets up a sequel more obviously than the original Cloverfield, giving viewers a dynamic and action-packed ending. The Cloverfield franchise's true strength lies in its dark and dystopian sci-fi world, making it more appealing to continue the story through 10 Cloverfield Lane. Although 10 Cloverfield Lane 2 is a possibility, the timing and success of Cloverfield 2 will likely determine whether or not it will actually happen.

10 Cloverfield Lane 2 remains a possibility, and one that makes a stronger case for a Cloverfield continuation than the upcoming Cloverfield 2. The original Cloverfield first hit theaters in 2008, utilizing an ingenious viral marketing campaign that successfully built an aura of mystery around the secretive project. The franchise has stuck by its secretive roots ever since, playing its cards close to the chest with every Cloverfield sequel by using fake production names, surprise releases, and non-traditional sequels to build the franchise’s off-kilter brand.

It is a surprise,...

Cloverfield's Lizzy Caplan Had No Idea What She Was Getting Herself Into
Image
During the Second World War, the Nazis found the body of a British Royal Marine floating in the sea off the coast of Spain. To their surprise, they discovered that the case attached to the dead man's wrist contained top-secret documents related to the Allies' imminent invasion of Sardinia and Greece. Hitler jumped right on it and diverted troops and tank divisions to the region to ward off the attack.

The siege never came, however, because the Allies invaded Sicily instead. It was all a big fake out -- British intelligence had dressed the corpse of a deceased homeless person as the mysterious messenger and deposited it near the Spanish coast by submarine in the hope that the Nazis would find it and take the bait. The elaborate ruse was named Operation Mincemeat.

In 2007, a similarly covert viral marketing campaign teased the latest project from producer J.J. Abrams. Making its debut before "Transformers,...

Matt Reeves Questioned Why He Was Picked To Direct Cloverfield
Image
In Matt Reeves' "Cloverfield," the severed head of the Statue of Liberty crashes near bystanders exiting a going-away office party, while a monster rampages New York City. The events of the film are relayed via found footage, and the monster in question emerges as an unconventional, terrifying entity, whose origins remained mysterious before "Cloverfield" ballooned into a film franchise. This, paired with cryptic Lovecraftian puzzles surfacing on the web as a part of the film's viral marketing campaign painted "Cloverfield" as a puzzle itself — audiences were intrigued by the idea of a creature feature that teased ample meta-theories and launched mini-ARGs to help create hype around Reeves' found-footage horror. Moreover, when the first trailer for the film was released, it was deliberately untitled, leaving audiences baffled about the nature of the film, and what exactly it had to offer.

Turns out, Reeves himself was baffled when he was chosen as...

Why Cloverfield 4 Must Fix Its Broken Continuity
Image
Cloverfield 4 needs to fix the franchise's confused continuity. Released in 2008, Cloverfield has just seen its 15th anniversary, causing a resurgence in discussions about the revolutionary monster movie, which detailed the tragic events of one night in New York City, during which a mysterious monster, designed by concept designer Neville Page, rampaged through the city. J. J. Abrams continued his franchise with the releases of 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, spiritual sequels to the found-footage film that expanded Cloverfield's mythos, while also seriously confusing the continuity of the franchise.

A dedicated sequel to Cloverfield was announced in 2018, following the release of The Cloverfield Paradox, with The Lazarus Project's Joe Barton attached to pen a script for the fourth installment. Through all the previous films, the origins of Cloverfield's strange monster, named Clover, were kept hidden, though promotional material connected to the original 2008 film seemed to confirm that the creature was of terrestrial origin,...

Cloverfield Director Reveals His Original Sequel Idea
Image
Despite its kaiju trappings, Cloverfield always seemed like an unlikely movie to earn a sequel, let alone a franchise. One of the best entries of the 2000s found footage craze, Cloverfield was less a killer monster movie and more character driven, focusing largely on Rob (Michael Stahl-David) making his way across a devastated New York City to reunite with his ex-girlfriend Beth (Odette Yustman). When their story ended, so did sequel chances.

But that wasn’t always the plan. Talking about the movie’s 15th anniversary, director Matt Reeves recalled the sequel hook he included in the original film. “I did something in the movie when Hud [the videographer played by Tj Miller] is on the bridge before the tail comes and smashes the Brooklyn Bridge in half,” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a moment where you actually see someone filming him and you realize, “Oh, there’s another perspective on this evening.

‘Cloverfield’ at 15: Director Matt Reeves Talks His Doctor Visit on Set and the Tough-to-Crack Sequel
Image
Cloverfield wasn’t Matt Reeves’ feature directorial debut, but it’s the film that put him on the trajectory towards two Planet of the Apes movies and 2022’s The Batman. Now, one would think that a found-footage monster film would be a walk in the park for a filmmaker who’s been making blockbusters look easy for the last decade, but having joined the enterprise late in the game alongside producer J.J. Abrams and screenwriter Drew Goddard, Reeves had his work cut out for him with production beginning just three months later.

With the film mostly taking place at night, Reeves himself shot a lot of the film handheld in order to achieve the cinéma vérité style, but the late nights and rushed schedule quickly took their toll.

“This doctor came and he was like, ‘I see you keep getting sick. I can give you … a drug called Provigil. This...

Cloverfield Monster Origin Finally Confirmed
Image
Cloverfield director Matt Reeves now definitively confirms the origin of the movie's giant monster. Released in 2008, Cloverfield serves as the breakout hit for Reeves, who would go on to direct two installments in the successful Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and last year's The Batman. The movie tells the story of a group of New Yorkers who attempt to stay alive after the arrival of a giant, destructive monster plunges the city into chaos. Cloverfield's success spawned two anthology sequels, including the generally well-received 10 Cloverfield Lane and the less well-received The Cloverfield Paradox, neither of which Reeves directed.

Although hinted at across the films, Reeves confirms the origin of the Cloverfield monster in a recent interview with Syfy. The director shares that they had a very clear understanding from the jump of not only where the monster comes from but why he behaves the way he does. It turns out,...

Matt Reeves Says He Had 'Some Debates' About Cloverfield's Ending [Exclusive]
Image
Remember the days when the term "mystery box" wasn't solely meant as a pejorative? Movie fans weren't always so jaded about J.J. Abrams' famous catchphrase and mission statement. Although, in fairness, it certainly helped that filmmakers at the time hadn't overused the concept to an egregious level just yet. Back in those more innocent times, mass audiences actually craved the exhilarating feeling of not having any idea what was going on -- a far cry from modern fandom, where Easter eggs and references are broken down into a fine powder only moments after a movie or television show first airs.

Perhaps the most famous example of this phenomenon came as a result of "Cloverfield," the 2008 found-footage monster movie by a relatively unknown filmmaker by the name of Matt Reeves. After dropping a surprise teaser attached to prints of the first "Transformers" movie, the mysterious footage detailing some sort of...

We’re happy to report that this Goddard – Abrams – Reeves monster thriller holds up, when most everything else from the years of shaky-cam nausea and ‘found footage’ boredom disappoints. The ‘found’ video recording of the end of NYC is more than a gimmick, and it brings the panic for a you-are-there night of mayhem, chaos and destruction. The show was engineered to look like low-grade amateur video footage . . . so . . . why a 4K presentation? Curious format-philes will want to know.

Tales From The Box Office: 15 Years Ago, Cloverfield Became A Monster-Sized Found Footage Hit
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

Found footage was, it's easy to forget, a pretty major revolution in popular cinema. With roots dating back to "Cannibal Holocaust" in 1980, the form went mainstream with "The Blair Witch Project" in 1999. The film became an unexpectedly huge hit with its low-tech approach and ultra-tiny budget, and the subgenre absolutely exploded in the 2000s. This was, in part, because the movies could be made very cheaply and, secondly, because audiences were eating this stuff up. "Paranormal Activity" still ranks as the most profitable film of all time. The found footage boom was a huge, huge deal.

But, nearly a decade into the craze, the time for reinvention was upon us. Using the low-budget, supernatural horror approach can only take one so far.

‘Good Sam’ Sneak Peek: Sam Takes Charge During a Crisis (Video)
Image
Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) faces a challenge in the March 30 episode of Good Sam as a devastating storm hits and the hospital staff must improvise in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek. “Governor just declared a state of emergency,” Dr. Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David) reports. “They’re closing the roads.” So how will the on-call doctors get to the hospital? He suggests sending the ambulances, but as Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) points out, they’re “going to be a little busy right now.” The doctors realize the only people who will be coming in are more patients. Ramona Diaconescu/CBS And there’s another problem: With so many trauma cases, they will run short on blood. “Can we call the Red Cross?” Sam suggests, but her father points out they, too, will be facing shortages. Dr. Joey Costa (Davi Santos) sums their situation up best: “So we’re almost at capacity,...

‘Chicago Fire’ Dominates Wednesday Demo & Audience; ‘The Amazing Race’ Viewers Rise With Premiere
Image
NBC’s Chicago Trio is back after the holiday break, heating up the new year as Chicago Fire wins both viewers and demo rating on Wednesday.

At the top of primetime Chicago Med won the 8 p.m. hour earning a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo and 6.75 million viewers. Stable from the latest episode back in early December, Chicago Med tied with the two-hour Season 33 premiere of The Amazing Race on CBS, but beat the competition series in viewers.

The Amazing Race, which returned to CBS after Covid delays, was steady from its Season 32 premiere in October 2020 and rose approximately 19% in viewers. The latest premiere, however was down from the Season 32 finale in December 2020.

Both Chicago Med and The Amazing Race bested the latest episode of The Goldbergs and The Wonder Years on ABC, and the Season 2 premiere of Fox’s I Can See Your Voice. Returning...

‘Good Sam’: What Do You Think of Sophia Bush & Jason Isaacs’ New Medical Drama? (Poll)
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Good Sam series premiere.] If you’ve been looking for something to fill the House-sized hole in your heart, CBS’ new medical drama Good Sam should do the trick. When we meet Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush), she’s convincing a patient that he’s in good hands with Dr. Rob. “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs), “the best” cardiothoracic surgeon, in her opinion. “I know that you are scared. I was, too,” she says. She had heart surgery a long time ago. When the team gathers in the scrub room, Sam’s sure to tell everyone they all have strengths, only for Griff to walk in and disagree. He sees a lot of weaknesses: “pathologically arrogant” (Michael Stahl-David’s Dr. Caleb Tucker), “profoundly insecure” (Omar Maskati’s Dr. Isan M. Shah), “emotionally unpredictable” (Skye P. Marshall’s Dr. Lex Trulie), and “exceptionally vain” (Davi Santos’ Dr. Joey Costa). And as the cardiac fellow,...

‘Good Sam’ Pits Sophia Bush and Jason Isaacs Against Each Other in Battle of Surgeon Egos: TV Review
Image
At the very least, Katie Wech’s “Good Sam” knows what you might be thinking when you hear it’s a show featuring a chronically cocky doctor with no respect for authority outside his own. Even after spending six months in a coma, Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffiths (Jason Isaacs) takes over a crucial diagnostic brainstorm session to suggest that their mystery patient is suffering from … lupus. For anyone even glancingly familiar with the long-running Fox drama “House,” which starred Hugh Laurie as a chronically cocky doctor whose favorite past time was rejecting lupus diagnoses, it does feel like a wink to the TV doctor who most clearly paved the way for Isaac’s Griff. The “Good Sam” twist on the classic doctor procedural recipe, though, is that Griff’s surgeon daughter (Sophia Bush) took over his post of chief while he was unconscious, and now that he’s back, the...

Good Sam Trailer: Sophia Bush and Jason Isaacs Play a Father and Daughter at War for the Or
Sophia Bush
CBS has finally dropped the official trailer for Good Sam, its latest medical drama.

The show finds Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) taking on the role of Chief of Surgery when her father, Dr. Rob Griffith (Jason Isaacs), falls into a coma.

The drama picks up when Rob wakes up months later intending to resume his career where he left off.

“Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent,” reads the official logline for the project.

Sam's father "defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.”

It is a compelling hook, but the success will all come down to whether the show manages to portray the fraught relationship between the father and daughter well.
