If you asked which brand reigns supreme in prestige television, most would say HBO. "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" are highs that television dramas have been chasing for the last two decades. HBO's judgment is not unassailable, though. The network has turned down several shows that went on to be huge successes elsewhere. One of the shows HBO rejected was "Breaking Bad," which is generally ranked alongside "Sopranos" and "The Wire" as the third node in the "television masterpiece" triptych.
Another was the series that became "Sons of Anarchy." Created by Kurt Sutter, the series is basically "Hamlet" retold with the Hells Angels. Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam) is a member of the Sons of Anarchy, a motorcycle club in northern California that makes its money running guns. My heart is still pounding from the shock of David Hale’s demise in Sons of Anarchy. Taylor Sheridan’s upright deputy, a paragon of probity in Charming’s gritty streets, was snuffed out in a brutal twist that left me floored.
Sincerely, I didn’t see that coming. Watching Hale get pancaked by a speeding van during Half-Sack’s funeral in Sons of Anarchy Season 3 felt like someone yanked the carpet from under my feet – no warning, just bam, goodbye moral compass.
Why would Kurt Sutter ax one of the few characters who wasn’t knee-deep in moral murk? But here I am, more than a decade later, and honestly, it finally clicks. Sheridan’s Hale wasn’t just collateral damage; his exit was the narrative ignition key. Sure, the kill came from contract frictions and some seriously ugly behind-the-scenes shade, but it also cracked open new story veins.

When it comes to crime dramas, there's certainly no shortage of titles from which to choose, and right now, the genre is on fire with recent hits like Adolescence, MobLand, and Dope Thief. They're just about on every platform, and they range in intensity from mild and comedic to gritty and violent.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to find the right title to binge, so let me help you out with that. Here are 16 of the best binge-worthy crime dramas to watch that aren't on cable, in no particular order, but they're all a favorite in my book and should be a Must See in yours. Find out why in the list below!
1. Adolescence
This little gem dropped on Netflix recently, and it didn’t just make a splash, it created a tidal wave of critical acclaim. Adolescence is a limited series about a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a female classmate.

Like every season of the hit HBO Mike White series "The White Lotus," the Thailand-set third season featured some terrific character actors giving scene-stealing turns as some of the show's most over-the-top characters yet. One of season 3's biggest standouts was Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett, a visitor to The White Lotus on a quest for vengeance, and the fact that he was a standout should come as no real surprise to fans of the charismatic actor. Over his career thus far, Goggins has made a name for himself by completely disappearing into his roles and giving them his all, no matter how big or small the part. One has to look no further than his guest spot on the NBC sitcom "Community" to understand his incredible talent for committing to the bit. Heck, he even pushed past his own severe phobia of snakes to shoot a terrifying scene in "The White Lotus,...

One of the beautiful things about a special piece of pop culture is that it continues to find new life within the social zeitgeist. Fans everywhere still look for ways to bring new meaning to some book, film or show they love and understand new things about it. This happens a lot with some of the most popular television shows that have audiences everywhere anticipating the weekly release of an episode. Society saw something more impactful than ever before when The Sopranos initially aired on television and then again when Breaking Bad was having its run. The best example recently is with Game of Thrones and how the ending of that series sent a shock-wave through the social zeitgeist with some of the most visceral reactions ever witnessed. However, one of the best shows of the "golden age" of cinematic television was Kurt Sutter's biker epic Sons of Anarchy.

Fans who have experienced Sons of Anarchy even once know how brutally heartbreaking the series turns out to be. Initially, the series was an entertaining exploration of biker culture and organized crime in California. However, as the series went on and fans became more attached to the characters and their stories, creator Kurt Sutter leaned heavily into the emotionally gripping drama the series had to offer. Some fans have revisited Sons of Anarchy over and over again, and the torment of watching their favorite characters get killed off still hits hard. Sutter knew how to cut deep, and when the violence, betrayal and chaos slowly started to take over, some of the best characters of the show ended up getting killed. It's one of those rare television experiences where fans have to worry constantly about whether someone would live. By the time the final season rolled around, it felt like no one was safe.

It's official — Westerns are in. After a couple of decades when cowboys have seen diminishing returns on the big screen, the classic film genre has been returning in a big way. That is all thanks in part to Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe, but also to some great Western remakes, Kevin Costner's epic Horizon saga, and Oscar-winning films like The Power of the Dog. 2024 was a great year for Westerns, but 2025 is shaping up to be a good one, too, and the upcoming film Day of Reckoning is joining the ranks. The new film stars Billy Zane, Zach Roerig, Cara Jade Myers, Scott Adkins, and Trace Adkins. Directed by Shaun Silva, written by Travis J. Opgenorth, produced by Ali Afshar, Christina Moore, Daniel Aspromonte, and Don Lepore. Esx is bringing the film to theaters on March 28, 2025. Check out the synopsis below:

One of the more controversial television endings of all time remains the final moments of Sons of Anarchy. Jax Teller captured the hearts of audiences everywhere when he first rode down a California street on his slick motorcycle. The charming biker from Charming was introduced as a new father with strong commitments to his family and his club who would do anything to protect both. As the series went on, tragedy continued to strike the Teller family until eventually, a climactic final season brought the series to an end. Creator Kurt Sutter knew exactly how to ingrain his series with a ton of thematic relevance that he touched on in various ways throughout the series.

There is perhaps no greater show from the "Golden Age" of cinematic television that weaves thematic parallels and compelling character arcs together like Sons of Anarchydoes. Immediately, Sons of Anarchy portrays a specific kind of family drama revolving around friendships and legacy that always gives the criminal aspect a unique kind of glorification. Experienced through protagonist Jax Teller's perspective, audiences become invested in the story of Samcro and their purpose as a California Biker Club. Biker clubs have always existed with admirable qualities such as honor, loyalty and commitment that aren't always present in other kinds of social groups. Of course, as biker clubs evolved into biker gangs, the organized crime element that began to overshadow the groups, made it harder for them to exist passively in the country. However, through cinematic storytelling, bikers get a specific kind of depiction that makes audiences understand them better.

Sons of Anarchy aired from 2008 to 2014, and the story of a ruthless motorcycle club, Sons of Anarchy aka Samcro, felt like a Shakespearean tragedy, especially at the very end. With seven difficult and devastating seasons, creator Kurt Sutter wrote a gripping story of a motorcycle club's ups and downs, making its members morally gray characters people enjoy cheering for. The show stars Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, and other exceptionally talented actors who helped shape the show into the brilliant work of art it is.

Taylor Sheridan has made a name for himself in the TV industry as the creator and writer of a plethora of hit shows like Yellowstone, its prequels 1883 and 1923, Special Ops: Lioness, Tulsa King, and the recent drama Landman starring Billy Bob Thornton as a Texas oil man (which even Stephen King is a fan of). His scripts also made it to the big screen with the 2015 movie Sicario and his project Hell or High Water (2016), which was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Kurt Sutter’s latest project, The Abandons, has already got fans buzzing with excitement and speculation. Since the success of Sons of Anarchy, Sutter has built a reputation for creating gritty worlds full of outcasts and violence, and his new Netflix Western appears no different. Set in 1850s Oregon, The Abandons might seem like a shift from his outlaw biker tales. However, there are several hints that the show could be more connected to Sutter’s previous work than initially thought. It could be a hidden prequel to Sons of Anarchy.
The Abandons follows a group of outcast families fighting against corrupt enemies in a lawless landscape. Sound familiar? For a long, long time, Hollywood had relegated Zack Snyder to a somewhat diminished status as a director for his previously difficult experiences with Warner Bros. Both his attempts at adapting comic books to live-action films had been deemed a severe failure of creative and artistic sensibilities. Yet, the films in question – Watchmen and Dceu – raised an army of fans who have been unwavering in their fealty to Snyder.
Watchmen [Credit: Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures]
Guillermo del Toro has had a somewhat similar experience in the industry as well. The director, famously known for his love for the bizarre, has nearly 20 fully-developed scripts in his possession that were never made into a movie. Despite his Oscar-winning credentials and unique artistic vision, Hollywood has hardly done right by del Toro.
However, even beyond their underappreciated vision as auteurs, there is a singular quality that unifies both Snyder and del Toro under one creative umbrella.

Ben Affleck’s crime thriller Animals is coming back together, this time with a new star very familiar to the filmmaker. Himself.

The Sons of Anarchy hard-hitting biker gang show turned out to be a hit. Its fame and popularity proved that there was a demand for a show like that. In 2012, Discovery moved forward with its own bikers show. Titled The Devils Ride, the reality show follows a real-life gang as they undergo hardship and troubles just like Samcro in Sons of Anarchy. By that time, Kurt Sutter's show had already earned a following, which prompted Discovery to use its name as a reference in the promotional material.
Sutter was unhappy about another biker show trying to use his brand to appeal to the same fan base. In a now hidden post on Twitter/X (via Entertainment Weekly), Sutter wrote: "if Devil’S Ride is gonna advertise itself as a ‘real-life Soa’ then i get to weigh in. they’re f—ing with my brand and they sure Ain’T it.

Ever since Taylor Sheridan's 2015 hit Sicario debuted, he quickly became a critically revered multi-hyphenate in Hollywood. Award-winning films like Hell or High Water and his Yellowstone television empire soon followed, establishing the Texas native in the industry as a character-focused storyteller, notably ridding himself of writer's room constraints and breaking traditional, plot-driven rules. As his work garners continued praise, fans have turned their attention to his rise to fame. Before discovering his behind-the-scenes talent, Sheridan began his film career as an actor.
Despite becoming a Western staple of modern film and TV, his first claim to fame was FX's outlaw, biker-gang drama Sons of Anarchy. Created and directed by Kurt Sutter, the show follows lead Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) as he navigates the titular club (often referred to by the acronym Samcro) after his father's death. Although Samcro protects its Californian hometown from various threats, it also runs an illegal arms business.

Years before Taylor Sheridan cast himself as Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone," he was often seen butting heads with Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) and his beloved but regularly law-breaking biker gang in "Sons of Anarchy." Kurt Sutter's series, which mixed "Hamlet" with hogs, cast Sheridan as strait-laced Deputy Chief David Hale, a regular thorn in the side of Teller and his crew. For a while, at least.
Staring down the Sons for 21 episodes, Hale was abruptly killed off in the third episode of season 3 (one of the best seasons of "Sons of Anarchy") during a drive-by at a funeral. Like so many deaths on the show, his offing was visceral, assuring audiences that he was well and truly done. According to Sheridan, the exit was his choice, and it all came down to a matter of numbers, both on call sheets and contracts.

The members of the title motorcycle club in Sons of Anarchy aren’t exactly the most morally correct people, though many of them changed for the better, as is the case of Tig (Kim Coates), but he still shares an unfortunate yet fitting record with Jax (Charlie Hunnam). In 2008, Kurt Sutter took the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, to meet the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club (also known as Samcro), led by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jax Teller. Throughout eight seasons, Samcro confronts various enemies, including some within the club.
Throughout his time as VP and President, Jax is accompanied by the club’s most loyal members, who follow him through many highs and lows. Among them is Tig Trager, Samcro’s Sergeant-at-Arms during Clay’s Presidency and thus his right hand, who at the end of Sons of Anarchy becomes the club’s VP.

Taylor Sheridan is the television mastermind behind Yellowstone and its ever-growing catalog of spinoffs. However, the critically acclaimed creator isn't like anyone else in Hollywood. Notably, he refused to work in a writers' room, breaking traditional rules for screenplay by letting his characters drive the plot. Despite becoming a staple of the TV Western landscape, Sheridan's earlier claim to fame was a decidedly non-Western show.
Kurt Sutter's Sons of Anarchy stirred Sheridan in a completely different direction and changed his life. The Yellowstone creator played a recurring role in the early seasons. Though it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience, it marked the beginning of Sheridan's career as a writer, which would eventually lead to him to his current television empire.

Kim Coates is one of those actors people rarely know the name of but always recognize their face, at least until Sons of Anarchy became a television phenomenon in 2008. Lasting for seven seasons, the action crime drama found Coates playing Tig Trager, a character who was somewhat of a sadistic loose canon yet brought a lot of heart to Samcro. Now, Coates is back on our screens in the Netflix series American Primeval, but before we get there, the Canadian-born actor took time to reflect on Sons of Anarchy in a new interview with MovieWeb.
Coates mentioned at the time Soa came along, he wasn't necessarily looking to sink his teeth into a lengthy television role. Up until then, he'd been enjoying success appearing in the likes of Open Range, Waterworld, Black Hawk Down, and The Last Boy Scout. He was – and still is – a great character actor doing what character actors do.

Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western drama Yellowstone helped to revitalize the Western genre in television, but it has its roots in another neo-Western that isn't always recognized as such: Sons of Anarchy. Starring Kevin Costner and a talented ensemble cast, Yellowstone became a runaway success thanks to its potent mix of drama, action, and an intoxicating Western setting. While the cowboys, rural setting, and gunfights certainly conjure classic Western vibes, the political maneuvering and corporate espionage ring of more modern dramatic fare, which is part of why Yellowstone's audience demographics are so varied and diverse.

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley's dystopian sci-fi film Chaos Walking will soon be streaming for free. The film will be available on Tubi beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
Chaos Walking was released in 2021 and was based on Patrick Ness's science fiction trilogy of the same name. The film adapted the series' first book, The Knife of Never Letting Go. Tom Holland starred as Todd Hewitt, a young man who lives in a world with no women where all creatures can hear each other's thoughts through a series of images, words and sounds called "noise". When Viola Eade (played by Daisy Ridley) crash lands on the all-male planet, Todd protects her from danger. Chaos Walking was an infamous box office flop for Lionsgate, making only $27.1 million despite the film's $100+ million budget.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy may not have ended on the highest note it could have, but that didn't stop the actors involved from having successful careers. In fact, despite the mixed audience reception to The Last Jedi and the critical failings of The Rise of Skywalker, actors such as Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and John Boyega would go on to star in more exciting films.
The star of the trilogy, Daisy Ridley, would also star in several films, both large and small. Starring opposite Tom Holland, Ridley faced plenty of difficulties during the production of the film, which saw numerous delays and eventually replaced Liman with Alien: Romulus Director Fede Alvarez. While many crime shows use unexpected moments to create drama and tension, very few are filled with quite as many shocking scenes as Sons of Anarchy. The series follows a group of outlaw bikers and while they are initially presented as anti-heroes who look out for their local community, it quickly becomes apparent quite how flawed Samcro really is. The club's violent actions spiraled out of control, resulting in many innocent people losing their lives, and these crimes eventually caught up with the central characters, as very few Samcro members survived Sons of Anarchy's ending.

Many fans know that Sons of Anarchy took inspiration from real-life motor clubs, but there may be some who don't realize the lengths that the show went to in trying to capture authenticity. Not only did many of the actors do their own riding, but some already had direct ties to motorcycle culture before joining the show. As it turns out, a few of these actors had ties to one club in particular, one that has garnered a controversial reputation over the years: the Hells Angels. Most of these actors only appeared in small guest appearances and recurring roles. However, there was one member-turned-actor who surprisingly played a larger role than all the rest.

The fact that so much love, care, and attention to detail went into the creation and subsequent production of Sons of Anarchy is one of the biggest reasons why the show is still being talked about today. From the very beginning, creator Kurt Sutter had wanted the show to hold a certain authenticity in its depiction of the world and culture of motorcycle clubs. He has made no secret in the past of all the sources of inspiration he lifted from to tell the story. These range from the tragedies of Shakespeare to the infamy of the Hells Angels (a few real-life members were even cast in various roles). There is one story, however, regarding the creation of a particular character that many may not have heard.

Throughout seven seasons, Sons of Anarchy had a variety of villains with different reasons to destroy Samcro, but its weirdest one returned seven years later in the spinoff series Mayans M.C., and he was even worse. Sons of Anarchy arrived in 2008 to take the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, to meet the title motorcycle club, led by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jackson Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Sons of Anarchy focused on Jaxs efforts to bring his late fathers vision for the club to life, but he ended up having to change this plan.
Jax also wanted to keep the club afloat while also dealing with a lot of family trauma, which led him to make some questionable decisions throughout Sons of Anarchy. Jax and Samcro earned many enemies over the years, going from the leaders of other gangs and clubs to Atf agents and more.

Season 7 of Sons of Anarchy wraps up the bikers' story in a tragically haunting way. For a while, it seemed that the dust had settled, but a few years later, creator Kurt Sutter, who also played Otto in the series, decided that he was not quite done with the motorcycle world just yet. A spin-off series that focused on the Mayans motorcycle club titled Mayans M.C. was born.
The Mayans motorcycle club has been a part of the Sons of Anarchy universe since day one, being the one that stole guns from Samcro's weapon storage and burned down the warehouse at the beginning of Season 1. Throughout the series, the motorcycle club has been part of the story, but their rivalry with Samcro has slowly transformed into an alliance. With the motorcycle club's deep roots in the Sons of Anarchy world, where the spin-off show takes place might come as a surprise to many.
