Image
Mexico’s foremost animation forum, Pixelatl, kicks off Sept. 5 in Guadalajara with an array of activities that includes screenings, conferences, panels, works-in-progress sessions, master classes and pitches amid a myriad of sections.

Now on its twelfth year, the event has grown from just 100 attendees during its early years to some 3,500 on average, attracting big guns from major networks, studios and platforms worldwide.

Execs are expected from Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Pixar, BBC, Netflix, Disney TV, Sony Pictures Television, YouTube, Fox – Bentobox and Paka Paka, among others, says Pixelatl founder-CEO Jose Iñesta, who works with a barebones team of seven people – with only three full-timers among them – to run the five-day event.

Pixelatl also organized Mexico’s extraordinarily large presence at the world’s preeminent animation festival, Annecy, where the June event paid tribute to Mexican animation. The nine Mexico in Annecy programs, comprising 88 short films, will also be presented at Pixelatl.

The film tells the story of a young orangutan Ozi, voiced by Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”), who becomes separated from her parents when her rain forest home is devastated by a company producing palm oil.

With the additional voice talents of Laura Dern, Djimon Hounsou and Donald Sutherland, the film also boasts a broad array of talent behind the camera including Keith Chapman, creator of “Paw Patrol” and Madrid-based Rodrigo Blaas, behind the “Sith” episode in “Star Wars Visions,” as part of the creative team. Leonardo DiCaprio and legendary producer and former studio head Mike Medavoy are credited as producers.

From Alberto Mielgo’s Oscar Win to an Episode of ‘Star Wars: Visions’ and Neon’s First Cannes Buy, Animation Builds in Spain
Image
In a highly anticipated animation event at this year’s Cannes Festival, Emmy-winning Spanish director Rodrigo Blaas attends on Sunday the screening of his short film “Sith,” part of Disney+’s “Star Wars: Visions” Season 2 anthology. The first big-screen exhibition of “Sith” — released worldwide May 4 on Disney+ — followed by a meet and greet with Blaas marks one highlight of the Animation Day Revelations New Animated Shorts From Spain, organized by Icex Spain’s Trade & Investment.

The Spanish animation event at Cannes will also showcase Alberto Mielgo’s celebrated 2022 Oscar-winning short film “The Windshield Wiper.”

Another leading light in the renaissance of Spanish animation, Mielgo also took an Emmy Award last year for individual achievement in animation for “Jíbaro,” part of Season 3 of Netflix’s animated series “Love, Death + Robots.” An earlier episode of the series directed by Mielgo, “The Witness,” won three Emmys in 2019.

What Cannes Country of Honor Status Means for Spain
Image
Spain’s status as Cannes’ Marché du Film’s Country of Honor is a “milestone,” says María Peña, CEO of Icex Spain Trade & Investment.

But it’s also a mark of recognition, she says, after Spain’s big wins just this year at the Berlinale and France’s Cesars.

Peña also points to April’s MipTV, where Rafael Cobos’ “The Left Handed Son,” from Movistar Plus+, won Canneseries’ Short Format Competition, and “The Caravan,” produced by Barcelona’s Caravan Films, the first MipDoc International Buyers Screenings honors.

Last year, Spain scooped up a Berlin Golden Bear (“Alcarràs”) and an Oscar (Alberto Mielgo’s “The Windshield Wiper”).

Spain is on a roll. That cuts multiple ways, however, explaining both the Country of Honor designation, and the country’s presence at large at Cannes this year. Seven takeaways about Spain:

Talent, Large Talent

Spain Celebrates its Very Best with ‘Revelations!’ Animation Showcase in Cannes
Image
Spanish animation shows off its serious side in Cannes’ “Revelations!” showcase, dedicated to new shorts both by promising beginners and acclaimed filmmakers, such as Alberto Mielgo, who scored an Academy Award for “The Windshield Wiper.”

In June, four of the presented titles will also head to Annecy: María Lorenzo’s “Fashion Victims 2.0,” “Lost at Sea,” directed by Lucija Stojevic and Andrés Bartos, Pablo Río’s “Conej Steps Out” and Carla Pereira and Juanfran Jacinto’s “All Is Lost.”

“Animators, or just artists in general, tend to reflect on their times. Some of these films were born during the pandemic and yes, there is this melancholy to them. They are tackling multiple serious subjects,” says animation curator Carolina López Caballero.

That includes elderly suicide, like in the case of Diego Porral’s tender “Leopoldo from the Bar,” where a lonely man walks through ever-changing streets of Madrid accompanied by a massive pigeon.

‘Star Wars: Visions’: Volume 2 Expands Beyond Anime
Image
Disney+’s acclaimed “Star Wars: Visions” anthology series from Lucasfilm moves beyond anime with “Volume 2.” The nine shorts in this second season tout a broader range of styles and techniques while showcasing the Star Wars franchise’s cultural impact throughout the world.

“We believed in this potential from the start when we expanded out more globally,” executive producer James Waugh told IndieWire. “We really thought we could show the world just incredible animation that’s being done out there and incredible cultural voices out there from different countries. Each one of these creators had something they wanted to say. They are such masters of their craft. And then we got to see the fun of watching all their different animation techniques and styles brought to life in ‘Star Wars’ in ways we never quite experienced before.”

The studios tapped by executive producers Waugh, Jacqui Lopez, and Josh Rimes include Aardman from Bristol,...

Is Star Wars: Visions Canon?
Image
Lucasfilm's animated Star Wars: Visions Disney+ TV show has an unusual relationship with the franchise's canon. Star Wars has always been a transmedia franchise - the first tie-in novel, Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye, released before The Empire Strikes Back. That naturally means questions of canonicity are particularly important to Star Wars, especially after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Disney promised a new approach to canon, where everything was equal regardless of the medium.

Star Wars: Visions, however, is Disney's first large-scale Disney+ TV show deliberately designed not to fit into the canon. Each season of Star Wars: Visions features episodes by different art houses around the world; season 1 focused on Manga, while season 2 went global. This allows season 1 to creatively reinterpret the Skywalker saga, with creative teams reinterpreting George Lucas' beloved story. Star Wars: Visions season 2 has taken a different approach, however, raising the possibility...

Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Pulls Off What The Movies Never Could
Image
This article contains spoilers for the first episode of "Star Wars: Visions" season 2.

For those who regard "Star Wars: Visions" as one of the most exciting additions to the entire franchise, it's no surprise that the very first installment of season 2 feels unique and distinct right from the first minute. Rather than starting with an opening crawl or a slow pan across stars, as the main saga movies do, we open on an almost impressionistic landscape completely devoid of color and form. Produced by Spanish animation studio El Guiri and directed by Rodrigo Blaas, the episode (which is plainly yet evocatively titled "Sith") proves to be a fascinating choice to kick off this next batch of shorts -- not only for its aesthetic risks, as impressive as they are, but for boldly and unapologetically evolving some of the most core tenets of the "Star Wars" universe, too.

As we soon learn,...

One Of The Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Shorts Was Partly Inspired By Picasso
Image
Unlike the Japan-centric first, the second season of "Star Wars: Visions" features animation studios from all over the world. One of these studios is El Guiri, co-founded in Madrid by creative director Rodrigo Blaas. Blaas has an impressive resume -- his contributions to "Ice Age," the first feature film produced by Blue Sky Studios, were impressive enough that he was scooped up by Pixar.

In the following years, he toiled behind the scenes of "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles." But then Blaas stepped away from Pixar to make "Alma," a 2009 horror short that earned "special mention" at Fantastic Fest that year. "Alma" caught the eye of Guillermo del Toro, who asked that Blaas come and direct a movie with him. That film became the Netflix TV series "Trollhunters" and its extended "Tales of Arcadia" universe. Now Blaas has returned to the short format with "Sith," produced by El Guiri co-founder...

The Disney+ animated short anthology "Star Wars: Visions" will be back with its second season in early May. The filmmakers, including Rodrigo Blaas of Spain's El Guiri animation studio, were on hand to discuss their shorts and some of the things they wanted to get across.

Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Trailer: Nine New Shorts Arrive On May 4
Image
Here's a little secret that many "Star Wars" fans have clued into by now: This franchise is oftentimes at its best in animated form. "Rebels" and "The Clone Wars" have received the bulk of the attention in recent years (and for good reason), but a whole new contender has entered the ring. The first season of "Star Wars: Visions" definitively brought the fantasy space opera back to its roots, having been produced by seven Japanese animation studios that were allowed the freedom to reinterpret George Lucas' classic stories as they saw fit. The final results, needless to say, were as creative, breathtaking, and just plain entertaining as "Star Wars" has been in years.

Now, over a year and a half since its debut, we've finally received our first look at the next season. Dubbed "Volume 2," the next batch of episodes in this anthology series looks even more exciting than the last.

Star Wars: Visions (2021)
‘Star Wars: Visions’ Returns With New Shorts From the Makers of ‘Wallace and Gromit,’ ‘Trollhunters’ and ‘Wolfwalkers’
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
When “Star Wars: Visions” debuted back in 2021, it was just what the doctor ordered. A collection of gorgeously animated shorts by some of Japan’s leading animation studios, the shorts offered up new sensibilities and visual styles that existed outside the comparatively stodgy realms of the live-action “Star Wars” franchise.

Fortunately, “Star Wars: Visions” is coming back on May 4 with a second volume of all-new studios from around the world.

Instead of exclusively Japanese studios, the second volume of “Visions” canvasses our world, with shorts from El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (the United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea), Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan) and Triggerfish (South Africa). This is truly an international affair!

Guillermo del Toro Has Always Been a Champion of Animation
Image
During Guillermo del Toro’s time as an animation producer at DreamWorks, he earned a certain reputation around the studio. “Jeffrey Katzenberg called me ‘The Harbinger of Death’ because a lot of my solutions to a character conflict was to kill them.” del Toro recalled, with a laugh, during a recent interview with IndieWire. It was the early 2010s, when DreamWorks movies were starting to become darker and more daring, and del Toro wanted to push directors to try riskier, wilder things. “When I consulted on ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ they were debating what to do with the father character,” del Toro explained. “I said, ‘Kill him. That will give the entire movie a lot more gravitas.’” Likewise, “Puss in Boots” offed its villain, one of the heroes died halfway through “Rise of the Guardians”, and “Kung Fu Panda” included a panda massacre as a plot line.

“The first...

Guillermo del Toro & Diego Luna Preview 3Below: Tales of Arcadia
Aaron Sagers Oct 22, 2018

The next chapter in the Tales of Arcadia story premieres in December, and we are so ready...

Guillermo del Toro and Diego Luna are living their best lives. At this month's New York Comic Con, they are chummy—hugging and exuding such smiles that you’d think they’re two bros gathered to catch up rather than an executive producer and voice actor doing press for Dreamworks Tales of Arcadia: 3Below, their upcoming animated series on Netflix.

And, while Del Toro is now an Academy Award-winning director, he’s still the same affable nerd behind the cross-genre Tales of Arcadia story that began with the three-season, Emmy-winning Trollhunters, and continues with the aliens-on-earth chapter 3Below.

Produced by del Toro, Marc Guggenheim, and Rodrigo Blaas, 3Below stars the vocal talents of Luna, Tatiana Maslany, Glenn Close, and Nick Offerman. It follows a teenage prince and princess, who escape their homeward followed an invasion,...

3Below: Tales of Arcadia Producer Marc Guggenheim discusses the show's crossover potential with Trollhunters.

From trolls to aliens, and with wizards on the way, the town of Arcadia, first seen in the Netflix series Trollhunters, is shaping up to be very weird. But what else can one expect when Guillermo del Toro is the architect?

It turns out, fans of del Toro’s Trollhunters can still expect a lot more as that fantasy story was just the first chapter in a cross-genre franchise, called Tales of Arcadia, and all set in the titular town. Following the three-season Emmy-winning success of Trollhunters, the second chapter is titled 3Below, and introduces an intergalactic element.

After an evil force invades their home planet, a teenage prince and princess, their bodyguard, and maternalistic "mother" ship land on Earth, and pose as overlooked citizens — a Latino boy, a girl, and elderly man...

She-ra is Making an Animated Comeback on Netflix!
Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced that they have a new slate of animated series projects in development that are set to launch next year. One of the most exciting projects that came with the announcement includes a revival of the classic 80s series She-Ra: Princess of Power!

I hope that the series turns out to be good. I think it's something that my girls are going to love. I'm sure most of you are familiar with She-Ra, but if not, she is also known as Princess Adora and is the twin sister of Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man. She was kidnapped as a baby by the Horde's leader Hordak. She is eventually given the Sword of Protection, which parallels He-Man's Sword of Power, gaining the power to transform into She-Ra.

The series is being developed by showrunner Noelle Stevenson, who is the Eisner-winning co-creator of Lumberjanes. Here’s...

First Trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Animated Adventure 'Trollhunters'
"I knew you had potential!" Netflix has premiered the first trailer for a new series called Trollhunters, developed at DreamWorks Animaiton by horror/monster mastermind Guillermo del Toro. I'm breaking our rules to feature a trailer for a television series, which we never do, only because this was originally a movie. We posted a first look shot earlier in the year and it was being developed as a feature at the time (as far as we know). In the meantime, Netflix has picked it up and is turning it into an "original series" available streaming on December 23rd. Ron Perlman and Kelsey Grammer provide two of the voices, but the rest of the cast is unrevealed so far. This looks fun, but derivative, with a cheesy story and all the typical tropes. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Rodrigo Blaas' Trollhunters, direct from YouTube: From the limitless imagination...
