Cameron Diaz's Comeback Movie Lands On Netflix's Elite Most-Viewed Charts 3 Months After Its Release

The new Cameron Diaz movie has become a global streaming sensation. The American actor became an A-list star off the back of prominent romantic comedies from the late 1990s, including My Best Friend's Wedding (in which she played Julia Roberts' romantic rival) and There's Something About Mary (in which she played the title role opposite Ben Stiller). She has also taken on major projects in other genres, including starring in 2000's Charlie's Angels and its 2003 sequel Full Throttle, as well as voicing Princess Fiona in DreamWorks' animated Shrek franchise.
However, for a full decade between 2014 and 2024, she starred in no movies at all. Cameron Diaz retired from acting, with her final project until 2025 being the 2014 remake of Annie starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx. She spent that decade focusing on her family, working to "reclaim" her life, and working in the wellness space, including launching an organic wine brand and publishing The Longevity Book.

After 11 years away from our screens, Cameron Diaz has returned to dominate Netflix alongside Jamie Foxx with their espionage action-comedy, "Back in Action." The film sees the duo playing loving parents and former CIA agents who are forced back into the field when their old enemies resurface and disrupt their happy home life. For Diaz, of course, engaging in some well-choreographed fight scenes isn't new. After all, she starred in a pair of "Charlie's Angels" films in 2000 and 2003 and even joined Tom Cruise on a whirlwind adventure in the 2010 action-comedy "Knight and Day."
Now that she's returned to making movies after disappearing from Hollywood for a decade, will we be seeing more of Diaz on our screens in the future? More specifically, could her future include the types of meet-cutes -- ones that frequently end with her being swept off her feet -- commonly found in the rom-coms she used to star in?...

Emily partners with her husband, Jamie Foxx's Matt, who is desperate to retain a normal life and hide away from the rest of the world. However, as intriguing as it is to see the duo "back in action," the more interesting spy is played by a veteran actor, Glenn Close, who steals the show as Emily's mother, Ginny.

Back in Action is headlined by Cameron Diaz’s comeback after 11 years away from acting, but Netflix’s most viewed weekend premiere in nearly three years is also Seth Gordon’s return to feature filmmaking.
Gordon — who’s most known as the director behind hit comedies such as Four Christmases (2008), Horrible Bosses (2011) and Identity Thief (2013) — hasn’t made a feature film since 2017’s Baywatch, and while his four films have averaged a box office gross of nearly $183 million each, his absence coincides with the comedy genre’s steady decline at the box office and widespread disappearance from major studio development slates. Gordon doesn’t have the definitive answer for why comedy is no longer the dominant force it once was at multiplexes, but he speculates that it could be a result of the hectic political climate that’s been in effect since 2017.
“[2017] was the time when comedy started to die down.

It’s been a decade since we’ve seen Cameron Diaz on screen. Now, she’s back with Netflix’s Back in Action. The film had high anticipations, but sadly, it’s more of a defeat than a triumph. You’d think teaming up with Jamie Foxx for a spy comedy would be a victor, but nope—both fanatics and critics aren’t buying it.
Directed by Seth Gordon, Back in Action follows two former spies-turned-suburban parents. Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) used to save the world, but now they’re coaching soccer and selling puzzles on Etsy.

It appears as if paying a huge amount of money to Cameron Diaz to lure her out of retirement has worked, as the Netflix hit Back in Action just scored the largest weekend debut for an English language movie since 2022. Diaz stars in the action comedy alongside Jamie Foxx, and was reportedly paid $45 million dollars by the streaming service to appear in two movies, making her Back in Action paycheck $22.5 million.
Per The Wrap, director Seth Gordon's first feature film since 2017's Baywatch brought in a whopping 46.8 million views during its premiere weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie since the 2022 Ryan Reynolds sci-fi action flick The Adam Project. Second place wasn't even close, as The Secret Life of Pets 2 scored 8.9 million views, with the original film coming in third at 5.2 million views.

The title of Netflix's new film Back in Action has a kind of meta meaning. First, it features the return of Cameron Diaz to the movies after 10 years, and she is back in action for sure. It's also the return of director Seth Gordon, who hadn't released a narrative feature film since 2017's Baywatch. The title of Back in Action, starring Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, and more, can also refer to the numerous times the film was halted and almost abandoned. Production was disrupted multiple times before everyone could get back in action, as Gordon told MovieWeb in a recent interview. He and his lead actor almost died, and the production had to shut down for other reasons as well. Gordon explains:
"The first month of shooting, I was supposed to get surgery. But I thought I was gonna lose Glenn, and Jamie Demetriou,...

Cameron Diaz is a big name in the film industry, even when her films don't receive good reviews. Her latest movie, Back in Action, her first one in 10 years, is a huge draw on Netflix.
The action comedy comes from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon and stars Jamie Foxx as the male lead. Diaz's last film was 2014's Annie but Foxx persuaded the actress to come back. This was a major win for Netflix, as the streamer revealed Back in Action topped the charts with 46.8 million views in just four days since its Jan. 17 release, considering the streamer counted the views between Jan. 13 and Jan. 20.

The new Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx-led Netflix action-comedy movie Back In Action has critics and viewers divided, evident in the film's Rotten Tomatoes score. While Back In Action, which hit Netflix on Friday, has a 23% critics score, the movie fared better with viewers, clocking a 63% rating.
Directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), Back In Action follows former CIA agents Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) as they are pulled back into international intrigue when their identities are revealed. The pair were enjoying family life — they have a teenage daughter, Alice (McKenna Roberts), and compounding the crisis is the soon-to-be husband and wife duo who are expecting another child.
The overdone premise of characters returning to a life they no longer want (insert Godfather III quote here) is likely a big reason for the unfavorable 23% “Tomatometer” score. "Mostly, the familiarity takes its toll," The New York Times' Ben Kenigsberg wrote.

Back in Action Director Says Jamie Foxx Was Cameron Diaz's 'Biggest Cheerleader and Hype Man' on Set

Back in Action marks Cameron Diaz's long-awaited return to acting and a reunion with co-star Jamie Foxx. Though Cameron and Foxx play a couple in the Netflix action comedy, director Seth Gordon insists their chemistry off-screen was "inspiring" enough to make their on-screen work believable.
Speaking with People, Gordon hailed Foxx and Diaz's close friendship and how their understanding of each other made them an ideal pairing for the recently released Back in Action. According to Gordon, the duo were equally supportive throughout filming, including following Foxx's medical emergency during production. "They took turns in a really deep way supporting each other," Gordon said. "Anyone who was on set will tell you [Jamie] was the biggest cheerleader and hype man for [Diaz], and really for everybody involved, but especially for her. So she got to return the favor in that way spiritually."

2014 wasn't a great year for Cameron Diaz. The actor who shot to stardom when she debuted in 1994's "The Mask" suddenly found herself at the center of three films that garnered reviews ranging from lukewarm to downright malicious with "The Other Woman," "Sex Tape," and "Annie." Diaz's best movie (at least according to Rotten Tomatoes) was long behind her at this point, and the actor disappeared from movie-making after "Annie" bowed in theaters. Now, she's back in a movie that will surely do little to make up for the poor reviews of 2014 but will, at least, give her global exposure, assuming the Netflix viewing figures are anything to go by.
Diaz appears alongside her "Any Given Sunday" and "Annie" co-star Jamie Foxx in "Back in Action" in which the pair play former spies who settle down and start a family in the suburbs of Atlanta. As you might have...

After a decade away from show business, Cameron Diaz returned to acting by joining Jamie Foxx in the new Netflix movie Back in Action. The critics were not impressed with the film, but audiences do not agree, seeing very different scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Currently, Back in Action is holding a rotten approval rating from critics of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score is almost three times higher, sitting at a fresh rating of 63%. This would mark another case where the critics and audiences disagree on the quality of a film to a big degree, and it perhaps gives the Back in Action team some vindication after initially stumbling with a low debut score from critics right out of the gate.

When Cameron Diaz retired from acting in 2014, fans thought they'd seen the last of the award-winning actress, but that all changed when it was announced in 2022 that she'd be returning for director Seth Gordon's Back in Action. Diaz stars in the Netflix hit alongside Jamie Foxx, with the duo portraying a pair of married ex-CIA operatives that are pulled back into active duty when their identities are compromised. Just how much money did it take to lure Diaz out of retirement, though? As it turns out, a lot.
An unearthed report from Bloomberg that goes deep into Netflix's production model revealed that Diaz was reportedly paid $45 million dollars to star in two movies for the streaming service, an amount that was agreed upon by the former film chairperson Scott Stuber before Dan Lin took his place in 2024. Before the Uncharted movie would finally be released in theaters in 2022, there were plenty of production troubles and several changes in directors. One such director attached to the project at one point was Seth Gordon, who just had his latest movie, Back in Action, released on Netflix this past weekend. While it was Ruben Fleischer who ultimately ended up directing the project, Gordon's role in the film's pre-production was essential to the final version.
In an exclusive interview with Collider, Gordon divulged details about how his work on the film would overlap with Fleischer's film production, before the Sony email leaks eventually led to him exiting the adaptation. Specifically, it was a member of the director's crew for his 2025 Netflix film that also ended up working on Uncharted in 2021. Cameron Diaz, the star who rose to prominence during the late 1990s, seemed to have vanished from the Hollywood spotlight for a while. The woman who was once was the queen of romantic comedies, who illuminated the screen with her signature smile, didn't disappear entirely, she has just been exercising her right to make the movies she actually wants to make. And if you think she will return to making movies in the genre that shot her to international fame, guess again. Diaz is not open to starring in romantic comedies again. Instead, she wants to make "momcoms."
How are those different? Only Diaz knows. What seems to be important, however, is that she hasn't fully retired — she's just being more careful as to what movies she's considering making next. Diaz, 52, is set to return in 2025 with the Netflix action film, Back in Action, a film whose title only seems appropriate for the actor's comeback.

Cameron Diaz has made her acting return in Back in Action, leading viewers to wonder what other fun action films they can find her own. After over a decade without an appearance in any movies or TV series, Diaz leads Back in Action's cast alongside Jamie Foxx, delivering an action-comedy film combination that's trending in the top 10 despite its poor reviews. It's undoubtedly fun to see such an iconic star return to the scene after so many years away, but she's had better and more successful work in the genre to explore after the new release.

After a decade-long absence from the silver screen, Cameron Diaz has finally returned to her roots with Seth Gordon’s Back in Action, starring Jamie Foxx. Although the movie hasn’t been able to wow critics, which boils down to its lackluster narrative at its core, one thing that the movie does excel at is the action sequences.

Director Seth Gordon’s latest action-comedy venture, Back in Action, will either bore and frustrate viewers given how unapologetically generic and derivative it appears to be, or one might consider the movie to be a sly meta commentary poking fun at genre tropes and have a good ol’ time streaming it on Netflix. There is no in-between with this one. At times it seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the makers, who decide to draw upon so many classic spy movie traits, creating an intentional late 90s, early 00s action movie vibe with two of the biggest action stars of yesteryear in the lead. But the moment you realize the humor is centered on the very typical generational gap stuff, most of which doesn’t land anyway, you might start questioning the creative choices. Still, for what it’s worth, Back in Action is somewhat entertaining, despite all its shortcomings,...

Back in Action has, as easily predicted, rocketed to the top of the Netflix streaming chart on its debut. Despite coming in for some heavy critical panning, the Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx action comedy is doing exactly what was expected of it.
As a film that suffered several delays, including a lengthy one caused by Jamie Foxx’s medical issues, Back in Action’s arrival on Netflix seemed like the end of a very long journey for the movie. Billed as Diaz’s big comeback movie, her first major appearance in a decade, there has been plenty of attention put on the film, making it almost guaranteed to be a viewership winner for the streaming platform.

That Back in Action made a lot of news for Diaz’s return is no secret. No wonder the Knight & Day star must have felt the pressure on her. But she had someone to rely on through thick and thin.
