- Was a stuka pilot for the Luftwaffe during WW2. He claimed that after his plane was shot down over the Crimea in the dead of winter, he was rescued by nomadic Tartars who saved him from frostbite by covering him in animal fat and a felt blanket. Both materials would later appear promenantly in his artwork.
- A strident enviromentalist and political activist, he was one of the founders of "Die Grunen", the Green Party of (West) Germany, in 1979.
- Modern artist who created drawings, sculpture and video art, but is best known for his performance works and installations (notably "How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare" [1965] and "Coyote; 'I Like America and America Likes Me'" [1974]). He is considered one of the most influential European artists of the late 20th century.
