'They tied the elephant to the tree till it died and then sawed its face off – walk half a mile and there'll be another one. It's bad'
When Kristin Davis became involved with wildlife conservation, the combination of celebrity and cause probably seemed less incongruous. On holiday in a Kenyan safari park, the actor, who made her name as prim heiress Charlotte York in hit TV show Sex and the City, joined the hunt for a lost baby elephant when a Maasai elder waved down the truck in which she was travelling and raised the alarm.
She followed the trail for two days, and filmed what happened when the team found the animal, later named Chaimu after the lava rocks where she was found.
"She kept trying to charge us, she was so traumatised and angry. We had to cover her eyes and tie her feet, you feel so horrible...

Jakarta, Indonesia — One of the orangutans starring in the IMAX film "Born to Be Wild" has been treated to a special jungle screening in Indonesia – and was captivated until the trumpet of elephants scared her off.
The documentary follows two women who have devoted their lives to caring for orphaned animals – Birute Galdikas in Indonesia and Daphne Sheldrick in Kenya.
Initially, Wednesday's screening on Borneo island was going to be held outside, but rain forced everyone into a hut.
Producer Drew Fellman said Thursday that Siswi – the daughter of one of the first orangutans Galdikas cared for – sat in the doorway and was engaged for the first 15 minutes.
But Fellman said that once the elephants arrived and started getting boisterous, Siswi got uncomfortable and ran off and climbed into a tree.

As if Nicole Kidman hadn't done enough for the mystique of elephants! Ten years ago in Moulin Rouge! (see previous posts) she famously lived, loved, and playfully sang on top of a giant bejewelled 'phant. Now she'll be interacting with the real thing on the silver screen. In early 2012 she'll be heading to Africa to film My Wild Life, a drama about the work of elephants advocate and conservationist Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Phillip Noyce (Salt, The Quiet American) will direct. Sheldrick's autobiography will be published in the spring and by this time next year (or thereabouts), if all goes according to plan, we'll see Nicole Kidman reenacting her adventures just in time for next year's Oscar race.
We assume that the bulk of the film will take place between 1955 and 1976 when Sheldrick (who was in her 20s and 30s at the time) and her husband were the co-wardens of Kenya's Tsavo National Park.

[1] As Salt director Phillip Noyce weighs the options for his next move, one long-gestating project has begun to pick up steam. Late last year, Noyce took over the helm of My Wild Life (formerly titled Our Wild Life), a drama based the real-life story of Kenyan elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick, and Nicole Kidman began circling [2] the lead role this past spring. As Noyce and Kidman got busy with other things, however, My Wild Life seemed to fall by the wayside. But Kidman is now officially attached to star, and with Mandalay Pictures working on getting the rights from New Line, the biopic could be hitting theaters during next year's holiday season. More details after the jump. My Wild Life has been in the works since last year, with Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) originally slated to direct. However, he jumped ship and eventually sued New Line for not letting him direct...

Despite having lost the ability to express emotion via the muscles of her face sometime around 2002, Nicole Kidman remains a relevant actress cast in (mostly) age-appropriate films like Rabbit Hole, for which she was nominated for an Oscar. Now she's eyeing the lead in an upcoming biopic called Our Wild Life, depicting the life and work of nature conservist Dame Daphne Sheldrick as she tended elephants in Kenya.

The last time we reported on a planned biopic of elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick, it was the project's former writer and director Nick Cassavetes suing New Line over what he called broken promises for him to write and direct the film. Cassavetes is most definitely still not involved, but the movie, now retitled My Wild Life, is finally ready to get made. THR reports that Nicole Kidman is attached to star as Sheldrick, with Philip Noyce, most recently of the Angelina Jolie action vehicle Salt, set to direct. The script is written by Jeff Stockwell, most recently behind Bridge to Terabithia and also an oddly similar sounding project Wilder Days. Ok, that movie is actually similar at all-- it stars Peter Falk, Tim Daly and a very young Josh Hutcherson, if you can believe it-- but there will probably be IMDb confusion about it anyway. As for My WIld Life,...

The 1989 Australian thriller, Dead Calm, won eight AFI awards and simultaneously launched the careers of director Phillip Noyce and Nicole Kidman internationally. Dozens of Hollywood Blockbusters and more than two decades later, they look set to return to their highly successful partnership with My Wild Life. The film is a biopic of Kenyan elephant conservationist, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick and retells Daphne's meeting of the fearless David Sheldrick, their falling in love and how she followed him to Tsavo, Kenya to continue his life's work protecting elephants. When confronted by poaching and the imminent threat of culling, Daphne took on the authorities to save the elephants she had fallen in love with.

Charming short about animals rescued and preparing for reintroduction to the wild. By Peter Bradshaw
A pleasant featurette on 3D Imax, about conservationists who rescue vulnerable animals, and prepare them for re-introduction into the wild. Daphne Sheldrick rescues baby elephants in Kenya and Dr Biruté Mary Galdikas nurtures little orangutans in Borneo. A nice family outing, this, but those after an in-depth discussion had better look elsewhere.

[1] Late last year, Salt director Phillip Noyce became the latest director to sign on for Our Wild Life, based on the story of Kenyan elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick. (Whose work was recently documented in the IMAX film Born To Be Wild.) The project had already racked up a pretty troubled history by this point -- Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) was originally attached to direct, but left on bad terms. He eventually sued New Line for not letting him direct from his own rewrite of Jeff Stockwell's original script. Since then, The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles has picked up and dropped the project, and Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, and Drew Barrymore have each been reported or rumored to star at some point. Now, a new story suggests that Nicole Kidman may be the latest actress to attempt to get the project up and running -- but her involvement is nowhere near certain.

Nicole Kidman may get close to elephants in Our Wild Life. According to The Wrap, Kidman has read and liked the script but "she is currently not attached." Nicole Kidman is reportedly eyeing the lead role in the $50 million sweeping drama "Our Wild Life" for Mandalay Pictures reports The Wrap.

A spokesperson for Kidman says "she is currently not attached", though sources closer to the project tell the paper that Kidman is expected to star but no deal is yet in place. Jeff Stockwell penned the script.

We've heard that the actress will join Colin Firth for Park Chan-wook's English-language debut Stoker, but another project may have Nicole Kidman dealing with wildlife. Though the actress is currently loosely attached to the film, she's said to be getting closer to making her involvement official. In addition, director Phillip Noyce (Salt, Patriot Games) is also attached to helm this portrait of the wildlife specialist. - Nicole Kidman loves her biopics. She's flirting with the lead in Our Wild Life, about Kenyan wildlife conservationist Dame Daphne Sheldrick (now 76, pictured), known for her work with the war-torn country's endangered elephants. As The Wrap reports, Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore. Gone are the good old days of Out of Africa (1985) and Born Free (1966), not to mention 1988's Gorillas in the Mist, the Dian Fossey biopic starring Sigourney Weaver. No official involvement from Kidman yet, but Phillip Noyce (Salt) is currently attached to direct. - Rachel Weisz--who we haven't seen much of recently--is currently in negotiations to play the villain (Evanora) in the Disney/Sam Raimi prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful (with James Franco and Mila Kunis). Our Wild Life, a fact-based story about Kenyan conservationist Daphne Sheldrick — she is particularly well-known for her efforts in preventing the extinction of elephants in Kenya — has seen a plethora of conflict in its casting process, as well as in the hiring of a suitable director. The involvement of Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) ended in a rather arduous lawsuit, which began when New Line wouldn’t let Cassavetes direct his own draft of the script. (Jeff Stockwell wrote the earlier draft.) Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), along with big-name stars such as Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, and Drew Barrymore also showed interest in the project as some point in time, only to back out soon later. [The Playlist]
Currently, it seems as if Phillip Noyce and Nicole Kidman are the most likely candidates to bring the story to the big screen, though their participation is far from a done deal.

Born to be Wild is not a feature so much as a forty-minute exercise in maximizing the inherent cuteness of animals. Nearly every shot is specifically designed in an attempt to make viewers misty-eyed. Still, the IMAX documentary is more than successful in provoking the desired emotional reaction, despite its obvious methods.
Of course, adding to the adorable factor is the sad plight of the subjects themselves. Documentary filmmakers follow elephant expert Daphne Sheldrick in Africa and orangutan authority Birute Galdikas in Asia as they help raise newborns that have been tragically orphaned and face certain death – the sad results of poaching and human development. Viewers watch as the two lead efforts to nurture the animals until they are ready to be set free into the wild once again.

While growing up in the late Sixties to early Seventies, one of the favorite television shows in our house was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with host Marlin Perkins. We loved watching wild animals in their natural habitat along with the challenges faced by Perkins and his field correspondents Jim Fowler and Peter Gros. Similar in nature was the classic film Born Free (1966), which told the story of female lion cub Elsa raised to maturity by a Kenyan game warden. Elsa is re-educated so that she can be released back into the wild. Both Wild Kingdom and Born Free left out the violence experienced in the wild, a pattern followed by IMAX documentary Born to Be Wild.

When Morgan Freeman talks, people listen. And for the new 3D IMAX film Born to Be Wild , it may be crucial to the survival of two species that people listen to Freeman closer than ever. The Oscar-winning actor lends his authoritative tones to the film's narration as it chronicles two very different animal rescue outposts: Dame Daphne Sheldrick's preserve in Kenya that's dedicated to rescuing orphaned baby elephants, rehabilitating them and eventually reintroducing them to the wild; and Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas' operation to do the same for orangutans a continent away in Borneo. The eye-opening film makes tremendous use of the IMAX and 3D formats while also opening minds to the challenges faced by the too-endangered animals and their caregivers. Born to Be Wild 3D is standard scientific IMAX fare that trades on an indisputable fact: Ecologically friendly movies about cute animals are just about impossible to resist. That’s even more pronouncedly the case when they unfold across settings as exotically picturesque as the wilds of Kenya and Borneo, with sweeping helicopter shots of the savanna and jungles molded to close-ups of the sweet, sad faces of orphaned orangutans and elephants. Throw in the honey tones of Morgan Freeman’s soothing narrative diction and keep things to an astoundingly brisk 40 minutes and you’ve got a recipe for success, albeit of the sort that’s best seen as a companion to a larger trip (a zoo or science center visit, for example) than a destination in itself. Director David Lickley depicts the work and passions of Dr. Biruté Galdikis and Dame Daphne Sheldrick, the former a Bornean scientist and an advocate for orangutans, the...

Title: Born to Be Wild Directed by: David Lickley Starring: Daphne Sheldrick, Birute Galdikas, Morgan Freeman, Elephants, Orangutans Cute, touching and vague. That’s all one needs to know about the 40 minute “Born to Be Wild” documentary. Yep, just 40 minutes of elephants and orangutans running around, all while Morgan Freeman narrates. The only reason this is being released in theaters instead of hitting the Discovery channel, is due to the camera choice that director David Lickley went with here. 4K Digital IMAX is his weapon of choice and apparently this is the first time anyone has ever used this equipment in a feature film. Our tale begins [...]...

In July of 2005 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of going to Africa on safari and seeing all the amazing landscapes and animals in one of the last places on earth unspoiled by man.
I went to Nairobi, Kenya and on that trip I had a driver from my hotel ask me if I would like to go see baby elephants. I went without hesitation. It was then that I first experienced the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is basically an orphanage for baby elephants and rhinos that have been found, either lost, abandoned, or orphaned by poachers that kill the mother elephants and rhinos for the illegal ivory trade. That first visit was brief . tourist can see the elephants from behind a rope for one hour each day.
Close physical contact is not allowed because the orphans are being raised to return to the wild and...

There’s always been something comforting about a film with narration by Morgan Freeman.
A few years ago, we were treated to his strangely calming voice as we witnessed “The March of the Penguins.” Freeman even managed to give Stephen Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” some extra class by book-ending the film with a smooth yet authoritative monologue.
Now, Morgan is back to narrate the story of orphaned elephants and orangutans, victims of man’s infiltration of their territories, and some of the interesting folks who rescue and raise them.
Captured in IMAX 3D, “Born to be Wild 3D” will transport moviegoers into the lush rainforests of Borneo and across the Kenyan Savannah with primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas and elephant expert Dame Daphne Sheldrick as they and their team rescue these cute baby animals.
The eye-popping photography looks to give us an up-close and personal look at...
