Saw V (2008) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Like the movies in this series, we will continue to release fairly regularly and find out what happened to the Saw franchise. Saw V was already planned well before Saw IV even came out as the new creators had a whole storyline that needed multiple movies to pull off. When would the revenue stop coming in for this series? How would they bring back Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw yet again after he had now been dead for a full movie and the timeline had caught up to the present? It’s time to play another game as we find out what happened to Saw V.

After the massive 140-million-dollar success of Saw IV, Saw V would be a similar experience. Why change things around too much if the formula was working so well. It had a similar budget to its predecessor, going from 10 million to 10.8 million and brought back many...

Darren Lynn Bousman Teases ‘Saw II’ 4K Restoration
Saw (2004)
Although the future of the Saw franchise remains unclear, it’s never game over for Billy the Puppet.

“Very cool stuff in the works from my friends Lionsgate,” Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, and Spiral director Darren Lynn Bousman wrote on Instagram. “Crazy to be looking back and rewatching Saw stuff decades later.”

With the series’ second installment celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and Bousman tagging post-production house FotoKem in the photo, it’s likely that a 4K restoration of Saw II is in the works.

The original Saw made its way to 4K Ultra HD back in 2021, but the sequels have yet to be upgraded. Perhaps we’ll get a box set with all 10 installments.

Written by Bousman and franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell, Saw II follows a group of ex-convicts forced to pass a series of deadly tests by the Jigsaw Killer.

Donnie Wahlberg, Franky G, Glenn Plummer,...

All 10 ‘Saw’ Movies, Ranked Worst to Best
Image
Like Jigsaw says, “I want to play a game,” we are playing a game, but this time, it’s going to be a lot less bloody (or not). Let’s rank all the Saw movies from worst to best, and no, you cannot back out. Ever since Saw burst onto the horror scene in 2004, James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s twisted creation has been messing with our heads (and stomachs).

What started as a low-budget indie horror flick became one of the most iconic (and goriest) horror franchises of all time. At the heart of it all? John Kramer, aka Jigsaw—the mastermind who doesn’t kill people but forces them to fight for survival in the most horrifying ways imaginable.

Now, nearly two decades and ten movies later, the Saw franchise has done it all, from jump scares, timeline gymnastics, and unexpected apprentices to traps that make you rethink...

Djimon Hounsou Says ‘I’m Definitely Underpaid’ and ‘Still Struggling to Make a Living’ Despite Two Oscar Noms and Many Blockbuster Roles
Image
Djimon Hounsou said in a recent interview with CNN that he continues to struggle as a working actor in Hollywood despite several roles in studio blockbusters under his belt and two Oscar nominations to his name. The actor noted that his continued struggles in Hollywood points to the “systemic racism” that prevails in the film industry.

“I am still struggling trying to make a living,” Hounsou said. “After 30 years…maybe the first 10 years was trying to acclimate myself to the industry, to establish myself. But I’ve been in this business making films now for over two decades and with two Oscar nominations and been in many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially to make a living. I’m definitely underpaid.”

“That’s a sign for you that systemic racism is not something you can deal with lightly,” he added. “It’s so deeply inserted in so...

Ten Best: Horror Movie Threequels That Nailed the Fear Factor
Image
The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

Director: Chuck Russell

This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.

2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Director: Tommy Lee Wallace

Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.

3. The Exorcist III (1990)

Director: William Peter Blatty

Returning to the chilling tone of the original, this sequel...

Saw III (2006) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Over 10 films to date and an 11th scheduled for late September of 2025, Saw is a franchise that rivals most in terms of both output and fandom. It had a run of 7 straight films over 7 years which began with the out of nowhere Saw in 2004 and culminating with Saw 3D in 2010. Its consistency may have trailed off temporarily with scattered entries following in 2017, 2021, and 2023, but the series as a whole is well known and has branched off into nearly every conceivable type of media. From comics and novels to video games and toys, Saw may just be primed to start another legendary run in the 2020s. Saw III was a runaway train that is still the highest grossing film in the series, but it was almost not even made after the original creators were done. With traps that were some of the most creative and even including Tobin Bell’s favorite...

While we wait to hear more information about that project, Hounsou is already moving on to another interesting film, one called The Monster. Deadline reports that Darren Lynn Bousman will be directing the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writers of Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane.

Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-iv, Spiral) has set up his next horror project, directing an upcoming movie titled The Monster with Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place) starring.

Deadline first reported the news this afternoon.

In the upcoming horror movie, “Two millennials make quick money by leasing incredible New York City apartments they don’t own to people who don’t know they are being scammed.

“The con works brilliantly until they run into an apartment owner with a dark secret who flips the game on them.”

Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer (Unsane) wrote the screenplay.

‘Terrifier 3’ Tops the Box Office in France With Monster Opening Day
Image
While Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 doesn’t release in theaters here in the United States until tonight – get your tickets now! – the film is already making waves after its first night of release over in France. In fact, it was already making headlines prior to its actual release, with the Classification Committee over in France quite literally banning minors from seeing Terrifier 3.

As we told you earlier this week, this is the first time a horror movie has been prohibited to minors under 18 since the release of director Darren Lynn Bousman’s Saw 3 back in 2006!

The film’s French distributors told us, “We can only deplore this unexpected final decision, which will seriously hamper the release of the film, awaited by tens of thousands of French viewers and scheduled for October 9 (and of course maintained). Terrifier 3 is a film d’auteur in the purest tradition of the slasher genre,...

‘Terrifier 3’ Is the First Horror Movie France Has Banned Minors from Seeing Since ‘Saw 3’ in 2006!
Image
In the wake of Damien Leone’s slasher sequel Terrifier 3 making waves over in the United Kingdom after multiple people walked out of the premiere, the Classification Committee over in France is drawing a line and quite literally banning minors from seeing Terrifier 3.

A first for the horror genre since the release of director Darren Lynn Bousman’s Saw 3 back in 2006, the Classification Committee in France has recommended a ban on the film for minors under 18, distributors Esc Éditions, Shadowz Films and Factoris Films have let us know.

In other words, anyone under 18 is not admitted into theaters to see Terrifier 3.

This particular rating is very rarely used, and it’s the equivalent of the MPA’s Nc-17 rating here in the United States. In the States, Terrifier 3 will be released in theaters fully Unrated.

The film’s French distributors tell Bloody Disgusting, “We can...

Bone Lake Cinematographer Nick Matthews Reveals Challenges & Inspirations
Andra Nechita in Bone Lake (2024)
Bone Lake is dark, sexy, and captivating. It follows two couples that are accidentally double-booked at a vacation rental home and decide to spend the weekend together. It doesn't take long before manipulation, betrayal, and violence break out. With an incredible lead cast, this movie is one to keep an eye out for.

Nick Matthews is the cinematographer for Bone Lake, but this is not his first time working on a horror film. Not only did he collaborate with Bone Lake director, Mercedes Bryce Morgan, on Spoonful of Sugar, most notably, he was the director of photography for Saw X. Bone Lake premiered at Fantastic Fest 2024 and is actively seeking distribution.

Chris Rock Workshopped a Lot of His Divorce Jokes in a ‘Saw’ Sequel
Image
Stand-up comedians don’t typically get cast in iconic horror franchises, hence why Rodney Dangerfield never faced off against Freddy Krueger, and Joan Rivers never ridiculed Michael Myers’ uninspired coverall ensemble.

But in 2019, the world was blindsided by the news that Chris Rock would be executive producing and starring in a new Saw movie, presumably in which a Jigsaw-like psycho tortures people using only a DVD copy of Grown Ups 2.

In 2021, we got Spiral: From the Book of Saw, which indeed found Rock playing a Chris Rock-like detective named Zeke Banks, who’s hot on the trail of a brutal serial killer.

While society has seemingly memory-holed Spiral, a lot of people brought it up in response to a recent social media post asking for examples of modern movies in which stand-up comedians perform their acts in character, à la Rodney Dangerfield. A lot of people pointed to Spiral...

Consumed's Courtney Halverson On Avoiding Damsel In Distress Tropes & Working With Devon Sawa For Horror Movie
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Courtney Halverson stars in Consumed as Beth, a woman who survived a brush with cancer, but now faces a mysterious entity while backpacking through the woods with her husband. Halverson wanted to portray Beth as strong, not a damsel in distress, and enjoyed working with Devon Sawa to push their characters and physical scenes beyond the script. Halverson also reflects on the legacy of Unfriended after a decade, feeling it is both a "time capsule" and timeless "brilliant idea".

Courtney Halverson is a woman facing more than just her own tragic past in Consumed. Halverson has been part of the acting industry since she was a teenager, garnering acclaim for her roles in the short films A Distant Shore and Sleepwalk before going on to make appearances in everything from Nickelodeon's Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide to HBO's Big Love. Five Nunsploitation Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Nunsploitation appears to be alive and well in 2024 with this week’s arrival of Immaculate, a convent-set horror movie that borrows heavily from ’70s Italian horror, the peak era of the exploitation film. Nunsploitation, a subgenre of exploitation films that hit its prime in the late ’70s and early ’80s, often features nuns behaving badly. More importantly, nunsploitation films explore themes of sexual or religious repression, frequently unleashing scathing critiques of the Church through blasphemous imagery and nuns behaving badly.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to nunsploitation horror. These taboo-shattering horror movies have more on their mind than their low-budget exploitation origins suggest.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Alucarda – Cultpix

Directed and co-written by Juan López Moctezuma, this English-language Mexican horror film stars Tina Romero as Alucarda, who was raised by nuns at a repressive Catholic convent.

Let’s Unbox the Brand New ‘Saw’ Franchise 10-Film Blu-ray Collection from Lionsgate!
Image
20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.

In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.

Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...
